Thomas Tuchel, Brendan Rodgers and the 'Big Six' managers who didn't last 10 matches at the start of a season

Being a football manager at any level is a precarious occupation, and the Premier League is the most intense pressure cooker of all.

Life as a Premier League manager is tough, particularly when filling the dugout of an ambitious outfit that expects to be challenging at the business end of the division while also chasing down major honours.

Securing silverware is not enough for some, with short memories ensuring that nobody is ever more than a few games away from the Job Centre.

Some notable names have found that out to their cost down the years, with the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham giving coaches little time at the start of any given season in which to prove their worth.

Thomas Tuchel has become the latest to face the chop, with GOAL on hand to cast an eye over some of the earliest managerial changes that have been implemented by members of the so-called ‘Big Six’.

    Juande Ramos | Tottenham | 2008-09 | Eight games

It was quite impressive that Juande Ramos managed to get Tottenham into the position they were in by October 2008.

After just eight Premier League matches, Spurs were firmly rooted to the bottom of the table with only two points – earned via draws with Chelsea and Wigan Athletic. Although Spurs weren't getting blown away in games – they lost by more than one goal just once during this spell – it was clear that something had to change.

Martin Jol came in to replace Ramos and went on a five-match unbeaten run that included four wins, eventually guiding Spurs to an eighth-placed finish.

    Brendan Rodgers | Liverpool | 2015-16 | Eight games

Brendan Rodgers had a net spend of over £70m in the three transfer windows that followed Liverpool's agonising second-place finish in 2014.

And what did the Reds have to show for it after eight games of the 2015-16 campaign? 12 points, that's what. This might have been acceptable had the club been showing the green shoots of a recovery, but a 1-1 draw in the Merseyside derby proved to be the final straw.

Rodgers was sacked in October 2015 and swiftly replaced by a certain Jurgen Klopp, who has since transformed Liverpool back into an elite force on domestic and European fronts.

    Glenn Hoddle | Tottenham | 2003-04 | Six games

He may have been a club legend from his playing days, but that was not enough to keep Glenn Hoddle’s neck from the chopping block once the going got tough in north London.

The former England manager was relieved of his duties at White Hart Lane by the end of September in the 2003-04 campaign, with only four points taken from six Premier League fixtures.

Spurs came unstuck against Birmingham City, Fulham and Chelsea before seeing their manager moved on after going down 3-1 at home to Southampton.

David Pleat stepped in as caretaker coach, but only managed to lift a sleeping giant as high as 14th in the table.

    Thomas Tuchel | Chelsea | 2022-23 | Six games

On May 29, 2021, Thomas Tuchel got his hands on the Champions League trophy following Chelsea’s narrow 1-0 victory over domestic rivals Manchester City at Estadio do Dragao in Porto.

By September 7, 2022, fortune had reversed so dramatically for the German tactician that was handed a P45 at Stamford Bridge.

Eyebrows were raised when the axe fell in west London but, given the Blues’ penchant for change in the dugout, such drastic action was not all that surprising.

Former Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain boss Tuchel was moved on after picking up 10 points from six games in the Premier League and suffering a 1-0 defeat to Dinamo Zagreb in an opening European encounter of the 2022-23 campaign.

Anwar Ali blitz not enough for Sindh Knights

Anwar Ali cracked 67 from 36 deliveries but fell in the last over as Sindh Knights went down by six runs to Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Fighters in the opening game of the Pentangular One Day Cup in Karachi

ESPNcricinfo staff01-Jan-2015Anwar Ali cracked 67 from 36 deliveries but fell in the last over as Sindh Knights went down by six runs to Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Fighters in the opening game of the Pentangular One Day Cup in Karachi.Fighters appeared to be set for victory when Knights were reduced to 228 for 9 in their chase of 267 in the 48th over. But with an improbable 39 needed from 17 balls, Anwar nearly took Knights home. He came in at No. 7 with the score on 165 and clubbed eight fours and two sixes. Anwar’s charge meant Knights seemed to have the game in the bag with seven required from the last five deliveries but he was stumped off left-arm spinner Zafar Gohar, who was Fighters’ most successful bowler with 3 for 55. Yasir Shah was the most economical with 2 for 37, while captain Junaid Khan took 2 for 58.Asad Shafiq contributed a steady 56 in the chase, while captain Fawad Alam made a quick 62. Both the batsmen were gone before the score reached 200, though, and the lower order caved in before Anwar threatened to stun Fighters. After they chose to bat, Fighters innings was built by half-centuries from Israrullah (62) and Shoaib Malik (70) after which an unbeaten 103-run stand between Adnan Raees (50 not out) and Adil Amin (52 not out) took them to 266 for 4.

Road to Women's World Cup begins

England will attempt to put behind them the shock of losing the Test against India when they begin the one-day series in Scarborough on Thursday, on a day which marks the start of the road to the 2017 Women’s World Cup with the beginning of the Women’s Championship. The Championship, the first structured bilateral tournament in the women’s game, will have officially started a few hours earlier in Brisbane with Australia facing Pakistan. The other four teams involved are South Africa, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and West Indies. The introduction of the league comes at a time when the major challenge within the women’s game is to provide a sustainable volume of cricket and also ensure that a damaging divide does not start to emerge along funding lines.England and Australia are significantly ahead of the other nations in terms of financial investment and, although India’s victory at Wormsley showed that does not automatically transfer into on-field results, the women’s game needs to look after those countries where money is more of a challenge. One option put on the table in recent months was the Women’s International Cricket League (WICL), a privately funded and run T20 event proposed to be held in Singapore. The ECB and Cricket Australia, however, quickly doused talk of any private enterprise being allowed to take hold.”From an ICC perspective I suppose the real priority has been getting to the Women’s Championship positioned and rolling that out the best we can,” Clare Connor, the ECB head of women’s cricket, said. “Bilateral cricket has to be our priority and to give it context and meaning ahead of the next World Cup. Once we see that bed in and run smoothly, I’m sure there will be scope to look at a global T20 competition.”I think what will happen is that in the next 12-24 months, England, Australia and India will somehow discuss a way forward to make something like that happen. It would be good to have a tournament like that which could inject more money into the game and bolster the profile in a different way.”The Championship sees each team play each other in one home or away series that will include three ODIs counting towards the Championship over a two-and-a-half year period. As such, each side is guaranteed at least 21 ODIs over the tournament period. At the conclusion of the seven rounds, the top four sides will gain automatic qualification for the 2017 Women’s World Cup in England, while the bottom four sides will get a final chance of qualification through the Qualifier event.

RAFINHA ESTREIA E ENLOUQUECE A TORCIDA

Favourites Australia eye elusive crown

Overview

With 5934 runs from 214 matches, Brad Hodge, at 39, is the leading run-scorer in Twenty20 cricket•Getty Images

The list of trophies won by Australia over the years is long and impressive, but there is one conspicuous absence. For all their success in World Cups, Champions Trophy tournaments and Test cricket, the World T20 has eluded them. Of course the history of the event is short, stretching back only as far as 2007, but the lack of a title in any of the four editions so far staged bothers the Australians. They enter the 2014 tournament with their best chance yet and, according to most reputable betting companies, as the favourites. It is a favouritism based in part on their recent form against England and South Africa but as much on their batting strength as anything. David Warner, Aaron Finch, Shane Watson, Brad Hodge, George Bailey, Cameron White, Brad Haddin, Glenn Maxwell – that’s some pretty impressive depth. The absence of Mitchell Johnson due to injury will hurt them, although Mitchell Starc has developed into one of the finest fast bowlers in T20 cricket, and James Faulkner offers an important all-round option. In the early days of the World T20, Australia’s selectors did not grant the format due respect and assumed the one-day team would do the job. Over time, and with a new selection panel in place, the Australians have realised that to win this event they will need proven T20 performers, regardless of age.Initially T20 seemed a young man’s game; now it is recognised that older types in the twilight of their careers may just have the experience and wiles required. Hence the presence of 43-year-old Brad Hogg, 39-year-old Hodge and 36-year-old Haddin in this squad.”We’ve got the most balanced side that I’ve ever been involved with and a balanced squad,” said Watson, who is the only Australian to have been part of the squads for all five World T20s, including this one. “I think the versatility of this squad (is) more than any squad that I’ve played Twenty20 cricket for Australia. Certainly in all conditions against any opposition we can match up really well, I think it gives us more of a chance to be able win it.”

Key player

With Warner and Watson to occupy two of Australia’s top three batting spots, you would think the other man in that trio might fly under the radar. Except that Aaron Finch enters the tournament as the newly-crowned No.1-ranked T20 international batsman in the world. Last year, Finch smashed the record for the highest score in a T20 international when he plundered 156 against England in Southampton and his clean striking and ability to consistently clear the fence makes him as exciting a player as there is in this Australian squad.

Surprise package

The catalogue of T20 teams Brad Hodge has played for is almost as long and impressive as Australia’s trophy list. Surely nobody can be shocked by the presence of Twenty20 cricket’s all-time leading run scorer at this tournament? Well, yes, the inclusion of Hodge was a surprise to many people, not least Hodge himself.Often overlooked by the national selectors during his heyday, Hodge had long since written off his international career when he was recalled in January at 39. But his T20 experience, including in Bangladesh with the Barisal Burners, encouraged the selectors to take a punt. His Man-of-the-Match effort in the second T20 in South Africa this month suggested it might have been a good call.

Weakness

The Australians like the ball coming on to the bat and in the group stage they will face three teams strong on spin options – Pakistan, West Indies and India. There is also the question of whether their own slow bowling will be good enough. Hogg has experience but with the raw legspinner James Muirhead and the part-timer Glenn Maxwell as his main support in spinning conditions, they do look a little thin in that department.

World T20 history

They might not have won the trophy yet but in three of the four World T20s so far, Australia have made it to at least the semi-final stage. England beat them in the decider in 2010 and last time they were bundled out by eventual champions West Indies in a semi-final. Their low point was the 2009 tournament, when they failed to make it past the group stage.

Recent form

Australia are five from five this year after beating England 3-0 and South Africa 2-0. There could hardly be a better time to hit their peak. But it was only this summer that things started turning around for Bailey’s men – from the end of the previous World T20 until the games against England, their record was LLLWLL.
