Better than Semenyo: Man Utd plot bid for “one of the best LWs in Europe”

Even at their lowest ebb last season, Manchester United’s pulling power was enough to entice both Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha to Old Trafford, with the Premier League-proven pair having since been two of Ruben Amorim’s shining lights in 2025/26 thus far.

With the January window looming, there had been hopes that it would be a similar story with regard to Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo, with INEOS making calls ahead of launching a potential move for the £65m man.

Unlike Mbeumo and Cunha before him, however, the Ghanaian appears to have his heart set on a different destination, should he move on from the Vitality Stadium as expected, with title challengers Manchester City believed to be his preferred pick.

A City side that already boasts the likes of Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki could well add yet another attacking weapon to their arsenal, with United now left to seek out suitable alternatives to bolster their own slim options at the top end of the pitch.

Semenyo appeared to be who Amorim and INEOS wanted in 2026, yet could that missed opportunity actually prove a blessing in disguise?

Man Utd plotting bid for a bigger talent than Semenyo

Even while improvements have been made this season, after netting just 44 league goals last time around, United’s dearth of real attacking depth and quality has been keenly felt of late.

Indeed, while Mbeumo has hit six top-flight goals following his arrival from Brentford, the likes of Cunha and Mason Mount have just three apiece, while Benjamin Sesko and Joshua Zirkzee are even further back on just two goals and one goal, respectively.

With even Amad, currently on AFCON duty, also registering just two league goals this term, there is a real need for reinforcements on the flanks, hence that long-standing interest in Semenyo.

According to reports in Spain, another option might have emerged in the form of Paris Saint-Germain sensation, Bradley Barcola, with United believed to be one of three teams vying for the Frenchman’s signature.

As per the report, while both Bayern Munich and Liverpool are in the mix, the Red Devils haven’t ruled out making a formal bid for the 22-year-old, should the chance present itself.

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The piece does add that a deal is more likely to be struck in the summer, although INEOS are keen to manoeuvre the club to the front of the queue now.

How Barcola compares to Semenyo

With Amorim having shifted to more of a conventional 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 in recent outings, it has opened up the need for more genuine options on the flanks, particularly off the left.

Semenyo, having scored nine league goals this season, would have been a worthwhile choice, although Barcola might even be the bigger talent, having been described as “one of the best left-wingers in Europe” by analyst and Como scout Ben Mattinson.

The former Lyon starlet has only scored five times in Ligue 1 in 2025/26, although he was a central part of PSG’s surge both domestically and in Europe last term, having registered 21 goals and a further 21 assists in all competitions.

For comparison, Semenyo ended last season with just 13 goals and seven assists to his name, highlighting that potential gulf in class between the two exciting widemen.

What also separates Barcola from his Bournemouth counterpart is his proven quality at Champions League level, having registered seven goals and assists in 17 appearances as the Parisian outfit romped to victory under Luis Enrique.

Across the last year in general, Barcola stacks up favourably in relation to his peers in Europe’s top five leagues, notably ranking in the top 4% for assists, as well as in the top 7% for pass completion.

In essence, as Mattinson alluded to, he is one of the very best on the continent in his field, having perhaps only been overshadowed by the exploits of Kvicha Kvaratskhelia ahead of him on Enrique’s left flank.

Should the Champions League winner need a fresh start in order to properly realise his potential, then Old Trafford might well be the ideal destination.

Semenyo, of course, is proven in English football, but Barcola’s highlight reel on the European stage ensures he would surely be an even more exciting addition.

Wright urges Abraham to seek Newcastle move

Former Arsenal forward Ian Wright has urged Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham to seek a move to Newcastle United in this summer’s transfer window.

Abraham, 20, joined Swansea City on loan last summer, and he has scored eight times in all competitions for the Welsh club during the 2017-18 campaign.

The England Under-21 international will return to Chelsea at the end of the season, but it is thought that he could again be sent out on loan next term.

Wright has claimed that he was “praying” that Abraham moved to Newcastle last summer, and has urged the Magpies to return for the forward ahead of the new season.

Wright told BBC Radio Five Live:

“I was praying that someone like Tammy Abraham went somewhere like there [Newcastle] and I keep saying it because it would be an unbelievable place to score goals at and build.

“I watched him come on the other day against Man United and I’m seeing some improvement.

“It’s the kind of place if he goes there under Rafa with someone like Kenedy that he knows from Chelsea, then all of a sudden he can start to bring in these players.”

Abraham scored 26 times during a loan spell at Bristol City last term before returning to his parent club last summer.

The highly-rated forward then signed a new five-year contract with Chelsea ahead of a season-long loan to Swansea, which has brought him 26 Premier League appearances.

Newcastle: Jamal Lewis transfer has failed

Plenty of Newcastle United supporters rejoiced in the streets outside St James’ Park when PIF’s takeover of the club became official last year.

The Saudi Arabian consortium took control of the Magpies from Mike Ashley and enjoyed a superb first transfer window in charge.

They provided Eddie Howe with a host of new signings in January, including Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood, Matt Targett, Dan Burn and Bruno Guimaraes. This raft of additions has helped to lift the team outside of the relegation zone and up to 14th in the table as it stands.

On the other hand, Ashley did not have the best of luck when it came to making signings in recent seasons on Tyneside.

Howler

One current player with whom the Sports Direct supremo had a howler was left-back Jamal Lewis. The Northern Ireland international joined from Norwich for a fee of £15m in September 2020 but it has been a disaster of a move to date.

Lewis caught the eye with the Canaries as an attack-minded, quick full-back who could bomb up and down the left flank throughout a match. He then joined a Steve Bruce side and spent his time in a low block, defending more than he was attacking, and this did not suit him at all.

The youngster started 20 Premier League matches in his debut campaign for the club and averaged a lowly SofaScore rating of 6.48. This shows that he struggled to put in consistent performances with the contrast in style between then-Norwich boss Daniel Farke and ex-Magpies gaffer Bruce.

He was recently left out of the club’s 25-man squad for the second half of the current Premier League season, with new coach Eddie Howe opting to go with other options instead. Lewis reportedly turned down the chance to go out on loan to the Championship on deadline day, choosing to remain at St James’ Park despite not being able to play in the league.

Former Premier League goalkeeper Paddy Kenny dubbed him “really strange” for rejecting the move, whilst journalist Luke Edwards claimed that the 24-year-old has been “badly damaged” by the criticism of his performances.

Perhaps the negativity around his time at Newcastle played a part in his decision to avoid a loan move, as the full-back may want to take some time to work on himself in training before going again in pre-season. He can work hard behind the scenes for the next six months and then look to seal a transfer away from the club, either on loan or permanently.

Either way, a £15m signing has ended up being surplus to requirements and wasting away at the training ground for the remainder of this season at least, and it all came from the move not suiting him from the outset. Therefore, Ashley had a howler with the Magpies dud, as the purchase was a failure during his tenure on Tyneside.

West Brom handed Daryl Dike injury boost

West Brom have struggled at times this season when it comes to finding the net, with just 37 goals scored in 35 games, which is lower than the majority of clubs in the Championship.

With the Baggies set to take on promotion-chasing Huddersfield Town tonight at The Hawthorns, Steve Bruce will undoubtedly be hoping that his side can follow up their win against Hull City last weekend with another victory this time around.

In terms of their lacklustre form in front of goal, it seems as though Albion could be set to welcome back a player who could well hold the key to finally addressing this shortcoming.

What’s the news?

According to a recent update on Twitter from Joe Masi, Bruce revealed in his latest press conference that West Brom striker Daryl Dike has finally returned to training, having picked up a hamstring injury only a few weeks after arriving at the club in January from Orlando City.

Bruce will be delighted

Having scored 28 goals in 63 appearances for his previous club and Barnsley, the 21-year-old certainly has what it takes to become a regular goal threat for the Baggies if he is able to maintain his fitness for the rest of the campaign and get into the rhythm of how the team plays.

While it will probably be too early for the American to get back into action tonight against the Terriers, Bruce will still be delighted to have him in training and getting closer to making a full return.

With only two appearances for his new club before picking up his injury, the £9m-rated striker will also be desperate to get back out on the pitch so he can show the Albion faithful what he’s made of and why the club chose to sign him in the January transfer window.

If Dike can get back to full fitness in the coming days and start getting some regular minutes on the pitch, he could be a big player for the Baggies and help them end the campaign on a high note if he is able to start scoring regularly for them, which would be a massive boost for everyone at The Hawthorns.

Given how Andy Carroll has not scored a goal in seven league appearances for the Midlands club since his arrival in January, Dike may not have too much trouble when it comes to getting back in the side.

Wolves: Is this their new Jimenez?

Wolves striker Raul Jimenez has had a difficult season in front of goal this campaign, having scored just five goals in 25 Premier League appearances so far – and at 30-years-old, if the Mexican striker doesn’t return to scoring goals regularly soon, the club may look to replace him in the future.

However, manager Bruno Lage has backed the forward to come through the drought, and for the time being, he is putting his faith in the former Atletico Madrid and Benfica striker.

Lage said: “A guy who comes [back] from what happened to him [fractured skull injury], if he can pass this moment, he will pass this moment without scoring goals,” said Lage.

“We were talking about this before the Tottenham game and he scored. Tell me about one team in the world where we are not talking about strikers when they go two or three games without scoring goals.”

With him turning 31 at the end of the season, his years as the number one striker at Molineux could soon come to a natural end anyway – particularly with the likes of Owen Farmer coming through in the youth academy and showing some very encouraging signs regarding his development in the last year or so.

The Englishman, described as a “prodigious talent”, was named in the Guardian’s Next Generation 2021 list – a yearly list that names one exciting young talent to keep an eye out for from each Premier League club.

Wolves academy coach Steve Davis has previously praised Farmer’s versatility as a forward – with the 17-year-old being deployed anywhere across a front-three and as a second-striker in a front-two.

Davis said: “Owen seems to be better playing off somebody rather than a lone central role. He’s better coming off the side and playing off the front with somebody, he tends to link well with his other centre-forward.”

He also hailed the forward as someone who is capable of scoring “poacher’s goals”, something that Jimenez is well accustomed to doing himself.

Farmer’s gradual progression from the U18s team – for whom he has made seven goal contributions in the U18 Premier League in nine appearances, to the U23 team, next season means he should be in line for a few potential appearances off the bench in cup games – or potentially even a start should he impress in pre-season.

As a result, given that it is unlikely that Wolves will be looking for an immediate replacement for Jimenez, the teenager could just save the club millions on replacing him.

Celtic: Insider drops Cameron Carter-Vickers claim

Transfer insider Dean Jones has made a claim on Celtic’s permanent pursuit of defender Cameron Carter-Vickers, GiveMeSport report.

The Lowdown: Option to buy

The Hoops secured the 24-year-old’s services on deadline day last summer, arriving on a season-long loan which includes an option to buy.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-23/” title=”Celtic updates!!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Reports have since claimed the finances involved for the centre-back could total £10m after an initial £6m fee with two separate add-ons.

Should that be the case, the USA international would become the club’s most expensive signing of all time, surpassing a £9.27m fee for Odsonne Edouard.

The Latest: Jones’ claim

Talking to GiveMeSport, Jones believes the centre-back is ‘very keen’ on a permanent Parkhead move and described the potential record transfer as ‘realistic’.

“I think that Carter-Vickers is very keen, because he feels like he can become part of the project there long-term, and I think it’s one that is realistic to be honest.”

This comes after Alex McLeish suggested that qualification for the Champions League could be the deciding factor.

The Verdict: CCV found a permanent home in Glasgow?

Carter-Vickers has been a regular under Ange Postecoglou in what has been an impressive season, with a domestic treble still on the cards.

He has now turned out in green and white on 36 occasions – making more appearances for the Hoops than any other of his seven clubs.

On that basis, you’d like to think he has found a full-time home in Glasgow, but it seems as if Celtic will need to write a big cheque for a player who is valued at just £2.7m by Transfermarkt – could a league title and Champions League qualification be the key factor?

AVFC plotting new Matty Cash contract offer

Aston Villa have been rather trigger-happy when it comes to spending money on bringing new players to the club over the past few years to help strengthen the squad and help the team progress.

With the upcoming summer transfer window set to open for business at the end of the season, it seems as though the Villans’ first port of call this time around will be to make sure they keep hold of one of their current players rather than immediately dive into the transfer market and sign some new ones.

What’s the news?

According to a recent report from Football Insider, the Midlands club are looking to offer right-back Matty Cash a new and improved contract to ward off interest from Atletico Madrid, who were linked with the Poland international in January and mentioned with a potential summer swoop for him.

Since arriving at Villa Park back in September 2020 from Nottingham Forest in a deal worth £16m, the full-back has cemented himself as a crucial player for the Villans by racking up 59 appearances across all competitions in which he’s managed to score three goals and provide six assists along the way.

Fans would be over the moon

To highlight just how pivotal the defender is for Steven Gerrard’s side, the former Forest star has started all 29 of Villa’s Premier League games in this campaign, playing more minutes than any other player in the squad.

His performances in those league games have earned him an overall season rating of 6.98, making him the third-highest figure in Gerrard’s ranks according to WhoScored behind Philippe Coutinho and John McGinn.

His form of late has been mightily impressive too, with the defender scoring twice and registering two assists in his last five outings.

This shows not only why a team like Atletico would want to add Cash to their side but also why the Villans would be keen to tie him down to a new contract to make sure he remains at the club for as long as possible given how important and impressive he’s been for them.

Even though his current deal at the Midlands club isn’t set to expire until 2025, it would surely leave plenty of supporters and indeed Gerrard jumping for joy if Johan Lange can secure a new contract for the full-back before the summer. If he does, they can surely rest easy over his immediate future.

Rangers trio tipped for Old Firm start

Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst has one of his biggest tests ahead of him this weekend as the latest Old Firm Derby is set to take place on Sunday afternoon at Ibrox. The Gers head into the showdown three points behind their rivals, meaning that a win for the home side would see them draw level at the top of the SPFL table.Heading into this big clash after the latest international break finally comes to an end, it seems as though a clue has emerged over what Van Bronckhorst’s starting XI could look like to take on the Hoops.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s match on the Go Football Radio Show (via Football.Scotland), Barry Ferguson had this to say on which midfield players he thinks Van Bronckhorst will select to start.

He said: “I think he’ll go with [Ryan] Jack, [John] Lundstram and Glen Kamara. The simple fact is that’s the area with Celtic, where you can’t let Callum McGregor dictate the play.”

While Kamara and Lundstram have started 40 league games between them in this campaign, the fact that Jack has only started three games this season and only earned himself an overall performance rating of 6.56 from WhoScored may not please too many Rangers fans to see him start.

As Ferguson mentioned, if Van Bronckhorst’s main aim is to be defensive and control the midfield to stop Celtic from attacking, then starting Jack could be the right move.

However, with the Gers needing to secure three points more than anything, the fans would presumably like to see their side attack their opponents and do all they can to win the game, meaning that if they were to see their manager take an overly-defensive stance when it comes to making his starting XI, it could anger the Ibrox faithful, especially if they don’t end up winning.

Therefore, even though regular game time hasn’t been easy for him to come by since his arrival, it could be worth giving Aaron Ramsey the chance to shine in what would be his first Old Firm Derby. In just six appearances he’s managed to score a goal and provide an assist, which is something that Jack hasn’t been able to do all season.

Also, with just three league games under his belt, the Welshman has managed to rack up an average of two shots per game, showing just how much of an attacking asset he can be, which could well end up being the difference between a win and any other result for Rangers this weekend.

He'd revive Gordon & Elanga: Newcastle could replace Howe with "world-class" coach

On December 14, 2024, Newcastle United thrashed Leicester City 4-0 in the Premier League. The relevance of this result? It sparked an incredible run of form that drove Eddie Howe and his side toward a Champions League-qualifying finish and to gold medals in the Carabao Cup.

Preceding that win over Leicester was a 4-2 defeat at Brentford. United were at a low ebb, 12th in the standings and without a win in four.

Howe will look at that sharp upswing in form as motivation, seeking to get out of a rut once again this season. However, Newcastle feel a bit more hollow at the moment, offering very little on the road and lacking the connectivity that has typically been showcased over the past four years.

Technical director Ross Wilson has struck a positive working relationship with Howe since his appointment in October, but the English coach has yet to get a consistent tune out of his players this season, and it might be worth revisiting some candidates for the hot seat, should Wilson be called into a difficult decision in the weeks or months to come.

Howe's future at Newcastle

Howe has been at Newcastle for over four years now, and just look at all the Magpies have achieved in that time. Now a force to be reckoned with in the Champions League, they won the Carabao Cup last season too.

But the 48-year-old won’t be in the dugout forever, and his side’s startling drop-off this season has drawn a share of detractors who feel that change might be for the best.

While PIF remain firmly behind Howe at the moment, that could change if improvements are not quickly seen.

And if push comes to shove, Wilson may canvass a proposal to former Barcelona boss Xavi, who has been out of work since 2024 but led La Blaugrana to the 2022/23 La Liga title.

It was reported in November that the Catalan legend had been shortlisted by PIF amid poor Newcastle form that has not yet abated.

Bournemouth and Crystal Palace bosses Andoni Iraola and Oliver Glasner were also scouted, but both would be available only after a compensation package handed to the Premier League rivals.

The 45-year-old has said before that he “would love to work in the Premier League”, and Newcastle could offer him the bustling project he craves.

What Xavi would bring to Newcastle

Xavi is one of football’s most legendary midfielders, and he translated his wealth of knowledge to Barcelona’s coaching table after cutting his teeth as a manager in the Gulf region.

Typically implementing a 4-3-3 style of football that references the Barcelona brand of slick, tiki-taka passing, Xavi has been hailed as a “world-class” manager by journalist Maynard Manyowa.

At Newcastle, he would be able to start afresh, taking the reins of a club whose attacking qualities have been clear to see over the past several Howe-led years. The Spanish icon is skilled at weaving in a culture and promoting youth, getting the best out of the players at his disposal.

In this regard, he could be the perfect boss for struggling wingers Anthony Gordon and Anthony Elanga, the latter joining from Nottingham Forest for £55m during the summer.

There is a trend there, and one that is none too pleasing for a Newcastle side simply unable to consistently fashion creative success for themselves this season.

Gordon, for example, has really struggled to perform in the Premier League, and perhaps a new vision, leaning further toward possession-based play, could prove a difference-maker.

But he’s still a top talent, and with Xavi’s ball-playing system brought over to St. James’ Park, the rise in possession might actually give him a greater license to roam up the channel and find pockets to influence from.

Elanga was considered among the most exciting up-and-coming talents in the Premier League last season, and Gordon has shown at his best that he is one of the best wingers in Europe.

But perhaps they need a fresh take, and Xavi could give them that. They have already been picked out as perfect complementary forwards either side of Nick Woltemade, whose passing and link-up play differentiate him from the lion’s share of European forwards.

Just imagine Xavi and his maestro-like vision instilled on Tyneside. Howe has done fine work at the club, but if PIF do decide it is time for a change, this would be the perfect progressive appointment.

Tottenham officials sent to club as Spurs eye Hazard-like ‘magician’ after Semenyo snub

Tottenham and their search for a winger goes on after being told by Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo that he won’t be arriving in north London.

Semenyo rejects Spurs as Frank scours for new attackers

As first revealed by the reliable David Ornstein, despite holding talks over personal terms, Semenyo has decided to reject Spurs’ advances with Man City, Man United and Liverpool remaining in contention.

For the Lilywhites and Thomas Frank, it is back to the transfer drawing board as the club search for a new wide attacker who can provide that extra cutting edge in the final third.

Pressure is mounting on Frank after a poor run of five defeats in their last eight games, winning just two in that time, with the Dane under fire from large sections of the fanbase who feel he is not fit for the job.

Tottenham set ridiculous Micky van de Ven price as Real Madrid plot January move

It wouldn’t be enough to buy his left foot.

1 ByEmilio Galantini

Frank may also be about to lose co-sporting director Fabio Paratici, who’s reportedly on the verge of a surprise move to Fiorentina just over two months after his return to N17 was announced.

If Paratici does return to Italy, it is down to Johan Lange and the rest of the recruitment team to ensure Frank is fully backed next month.

After being rejected by Semenyo, reports suggest that Tottenham are keen on Real Madrid winger Rodrygo, but Los Blancos are reluctant to sanction a mid-season exit after his recent return to prominence.

RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande has also held advanced discussions over a move to Spurs via his representatives, as per Sky Switzerland reporter Sacha Tavolieri, and he’s still on their radar.

That is according to journalist Graeme Bailey, who’s also lifted the lid on a new target with bags of potential.

Tottenham eyeing Ajax sensation Mika Godts after Antoine Semenyo blow

Bailey, writing for TEAMtalk, says Tottenham have identified Ajax winger Mika Godts as an alternative target after losing hope of signing Semenyo.

The 20-year-old, who has drawn comparisons to Eden Hazard, has emerged on the radar of Frank’s side as they seek attacking reinforcements to arrest their disappointing campaign.

Spurs dispatched officials to assess Godts during Ajax’s recent matches against Feyenoord and NEC, with the youngster providing an assist in a 2-0 win before scoring in a 2-2 draw.

The young left-winger has produced seven goals and six assists from 13 starts this season, establishing himself as one of the Dutch giants’ key performers despite their own difficulties under interim manager Fred Grim.

Godts arrived from Genk two years ago as a teenager and has frequently been likened to Hazard due to his dribbling ability and playing style.

Frank had considered other options including Real Madrid’s Rodrygo, though the Brazilian’s recent form makes a January departure from the Bernabeu highly unlikely.

Leipzig would also demand an excessive fee for Diomande midway through the campaign, while City’s Savinho signed a lengthy new deal recently which could elevate his price tag.

Several other Premier League clubs have sent representatives to watch Godts in recent weeks too, meaning Tottenham face competition for the Belgian’s services.

Ajax want to keep their young talent, but their poor season could undermine their bargaining position if clubs test their resolve with significant bids next month.

Godts is very highly-rated among talent spotters as well, with renowned scouting channel Rising Stars calling him a ‘magician’ amid his scintillating run of form.
