Tottenham Hotspur: Fans unhappy with talks over new contract for Jan Vertonghen

Tottenham Hotspur are holding talks with Jan Vertonghen over a new contract, according to The Telegraph via @RickSpur.

Ricky Sacks tweeted the news that Spurs have reopened discussions with Vertonghen’s representatives over a potential extension, amid interest from a number of leading European clubs including the likes of AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus.

The Love Sport Radio host posted: “Tottenham Hotspur have now resumed negotiations with Jan Vertonghen with view to extending his contract”. He added: “The Belgian is out of contract in June with AC Milan, Inter and Ajax expressing interest but Spurs aren’t ready to give up on the defender yet.”

After arriving at White Hart Lane from Ajax for £11.25m in July 2012, the 33-year-old established himself as one half of a formidable partnership with Toby Alderweireld, going on to make more than 300 appearances for the Lilywhites, scoring 14 goals and producing seven assists in all competitions.

He was a firm favourite under former manager Mauricio Pochettino, starring in 212 games for the Argentine, and has played in 19 matches in the Premier League this season, making 2.1 tackles per game, averaging 1.6 interceptions, and completing a staggering 5 clearances on average in the English top flight (WhoScored).

The veteran’s current contract is set to expire in June but it appears Daniel Levy plans to extend this agreement. Unsurprisingly, loads of Lilywhites ripped into the news on Twitter, with one fan slamming the talks as “pointless,” and another adding the club should “let him go.”

Man Utd sealing swoop for Erling Haaland would be an incredible coup

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to Norwegian publication Dagbladet, Manchester United are “far ahead” in the race to sign RB Salzburg sensation Erling Braut Haaland.

What’s the word?

The 19-year-old has burst onto the scene this season with a series of remarkable games for the Austrian side. In his 18 games, Haaland has scored a ridiculous 26 times, whilst he has also shown his more selfless side with six assists too.

Seven of those goals have come in the Champions League group stages, including a memorable hat-trick against Genk in the opening match-day, and a strike at Anfield in Salzburg’s 4-3 defeat to Liverpool.

Now, Dagbladet claim United are “far ahead” in the chase to secure Haaland’s signature, and that they have already begun the process of finding out the teenager’s potential next step. The report further adds Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants the Norway international to join the club, and that he has submitted a proposal to sign the forward.

Major coup

The man on everybody’s lips at the moment, Haaland’s remarkable form has well and truly caught the attention of the footballing world. The Norwegian’s exploits in the Champions League have launched him into the stratosphere, with reports in recent weeks claiming many of Europe’s biggest sides are monitoring him.

And that is exactly why if United were to pull off a sensational swoop for the 19-year-old, it should be regarded as one of their finest signings in recent memory. For a club currently plying their trade in the Europa League, and already nine points off the top four in the Premier League, beating the likes of Liverpool and Barcelona to his signature would be a major coup indeed.

Haaland himself has gone on record publicly hailing fellow Norwegian, Solskjaer, for his role in helping him develop while the pair were at Molde. He said: “He has had a huge impact on my life, both as a person and as a trainer. He won the Champions League and was an incredibly good player. He has taught me a lot.”

Solskjaer’s previous connection with Haaland could prove to be decisive, and it is imperative the United boss uses that relationship to entice him to Old Trafford. It could be the start of something great for the Red Devils.

Birmingham need to give Jake Clarke-Salter more of a chance

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Jake Clarke-Slater has taken his chance, but will it be taken away from him again in the future?

We spoke on FFC earlier this week about his performance against Fulham, how he didn’t do anything to disgrace himself when it came to his performance and that he should be given the opportunity to carry on as Harlee Dean’s replacement as he carries on his suspension.

However, once Dean’s time out is done, Clarke-Salter could find himself back to square one as it were, but should that really be the case?

He’s managed to perform well in his two league games so far this season, and has only really been let down by two horrendous mistakes by Lee Camp, otherwise he’d be undefeated with two clean sheets under his belt.

As it stands though, he’s got a 100% losing record (plus the cup game against Portsmouth, but we can cut him some slack there as the line-up suggested Pep Clotet had no intention of winning that game).

The Blues could change to a back three on a permanent basis to help accommodate someone like Clarke-Salter into the fray, however you can still bring him in without changing the formation. Although it might sound sacrilegious to say it, but there’s no reason why he shouldn’t be competing with the likes of Marc Roberts for a starting role alongside Dean.

He’s shown that he can be more than capable at this level for Birmingham, winning five duels and making a combined total of four interpretations and blocks at the weekend. However, beyond that, he just isn’t being given a fair crack at it.

Much in the same way we have talked about Moha Ramos and his lack of opportunities at St Andrew’s, the fact that he’s only here on loan should add urgency to the situation, leaning on him to be used on a regular basis. You don’t want to have essentially wasted a year of his career by allowing him to rot on the bench.

They might be in a position where they can buy the 22-year-old in the summer, but if he doesn’t feel happy about his playing time, then it could end up giving him second thoughts about coming back to St Andrew’s.

Leeds owner Andrea Radrizzani will have no more excuses if QSI invest

Who will be the hero of a potential return to the big time at Leeds?

It’s an open question, one that would provoke many a response. Marcelo Bielsa is the brains behind the team but Victor Orta was the man to thank for bringing the likes of Ben White and Eddie Nketiah to the club.

Andrea Radrizzani, however, has changed the landscape – certainly from an investment point of view.

While the Italian has made mistakes in the past, something he’s willingly admitted to, he could be on the verge of securing a colossal deal that puts Leeds back at the top table.

For better or for worse, it might change the face of the football club. If it doesn’t however, there would be no excuses left for a businessman who has come so far, yet still missed out on promotion.

Leeds’ owner has been open in the past about possible investment at Elland Road but never has it felt so close and such a feasible option for Radrizzani.

The club is stuck at a crossroads now where investment this season would be massive, yet they also risk upsetting the upper powers who deal with profit and sustainability laws.

A few weeks ago he was his most transparent about new assets. In a lengthy interview with The Times, he claimed that Qatar Sports Investments could put them on a par with Manchester City.

Since he walked through the door at Thorp Arch, this was perhaps his biggest statement yet.

The 45-year-old has overseen a revival of sorts at Leeds. Before he appointed Bielsa, they were a team languishing in mid-table.

They now stand on the verge of the Premier League – they can nearly taste England’s top-flight again. Yet, at the same time, it has never felt so far away.

A third-placed finish and ultimate playoff failure last season has put the club under huge pressures, particularly with a wage bill now nearing £40m.

If they don’t achieve promotion in 2019/20, they will be staring at the need to cut that down significantly. Will Bielsa leave? It’s not beyond the realms of possibility given his track record.

After all, it was a surprise he even signed a new deal back in May.

But the sheer revenue QSI have earned from their relationship with European heavyweights PSG has been gigantic. It’s money that if replicated at Leeds would surely see them back among some of the elite clubs.

That is a distant dream but it’s certainly not impossible.

However big a stake Nasser al-Khelaifi does end up investing in Leeds, that’s if he even does, would leave Radrizzani and the club with huge demands.

The PSG owner is incredibly wealthy and if he does indeed plough money into Leeds this term, they’d be left with no excuses in terms of earning promotion now or further down the line.

It would lift the burden on the wage bill but it would also serve as a double-edged sword. Investment is a good thing but it might actually be the factor that sees Radrizzani leave Leeds altogether.

BBC journalist Adam Pope claimed in September that it wouldn’t be a surprise if he’d left in a year’s time. That tells you all you need to know.

Even if the Whites end up achieving promotion and backing from Qatar subsequently comes in over the summer instead, the pressure would be felt again.

The stresses of living up to what Radrizzani has documented about Man City would become a reality.

There is clearly a plan in place at Leeds. Angus Kinnear has a vision for a 50,000 capacity Elland Road if they go up and further investment would almost definitely benefit that.

It’s easy to forget just where added monetary muscle took Aston Villa. They were a club spiralling down until Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris pumped their financial prowess into the Midlands.

They eventually went up and a similar scenario could play out further north in England.

However, there would be a larger weight of anticipation. Not only would Leeds be expected to merely stay up in the Premier League, but competing among some of the best in the division seems to be on the agenda too.

If they failed to achieve promotion and eventually compete with the top ten Premier League clubs following QSI’s backing, the investment would surely be regarded as a big failure.

This deal has the potential to be game-changing for Leeds, but it might also be the tectonic shift that sees Radrizzani lose his job.

He and Leeds need to tread very carefully and come to the best possible agreement for the club’s future.

Manchester United fans blame Aaron Wan-Bissaka for Adam Lallana’s goal

Lots of Manchester United fans have taken to Twitter in the aftermath of the 1-1 draw against Liverpool, and have been quick to point the finger at one man for Adam Lallana’s 85th-minute equaliser.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

The England U21 right-back – who cost the Red Devils £50m back in the summer – had a fairly solid game from a defensive aspect as he so usually does, making three tackles – the second most out of everyone on the pitch behind Roberto Firmino.

However, his failure to close down Andy Robertson in the final moments of the match proved costly to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the United players.

The Scotland international whipped in a cross which was then tucked away by Adam Lallana, resulting in the Red Devils throwing away yet another lead.

One fan below said that the former Crystal Palace man needs to get out to players quicker, whereas another supporter said that the 1-1 draw was not Wan-Bissaka’s best game by any means while also backing up the previous fan’s thoughts about closing Robertson down.

Let’s take a look at some more of the Twitter reaction…

Liverpool roundup: Klopp provides injury update, pundit claims Liverpool will lose 100% record, Carragher goes in on Suarez

In today’s Liverpool roundup, we take a look at the news doing the rounds for the Reds. Jurgen Klopp has provided an injury update ahead of the Sunday showdown against Chelsea, Jamie Carragher blames Suarez for the 2013-14 title loss, and Charlie Nicholas believes Liverpool will lose their 100% record this weekend.

Injury update

Report: As reported by the Liverpool Echo, Naby Keita is back training with the team while Alisson is making “big progress”, although it is “too early to say” as to when he will be back with the first-team, said Klopp. Elsewhere, Divock Origi has not been completely ruled out despite coming off in the 3-1 win over Newcastle United.

Verdict: It seems it is good news for Liverpool on the injury front. Indeed, Keita may not slot into the team immediately as Jordan Henderson, Georginio Wijnaldum and Fabinho are tough to replace right now. However, with the Champions League ties coming thick and fast and the Carabao Cup soon starting, Klopp will be very happy to see him back fit soon.

As for Alisson, it does seem he may be out for a few more weeks, which could see him miss games against Chelsea, Sheffield United, Red Bull Salzburg, Leicester City and perhaps even the trip to Old Trafford.

Carragher blames Suarez for title failure

Report: When speaking with Sky Sports ahead of the Chelsea fixture, Carragher looked back on the 2-2 draw in 2013 when Luis Suarez bit Branislav Ivanovic. The Reds legend said: “I wasn’t aware of any of this but got back into the dressing room and then word comes in that Luis has bit (Branislav) Ivanovic. Someone asked him and he denied it. I think on that, that it cost Liverpool the league the next season.

“Suarez was banned for five or six games. Liverpool lost the league, I think, on goal difference. Suarez was the best player by a mile in the league, he scored almost every game. In the first four games he missed, Liverpool lost 1-0 to Southampton and drew at Swansea. They dropped five points.

“If Suarez is playing, they probably win both of them,”

Charlie Nicholas backs a draw at Stamford Bridge

Report: In Charlie Nicholas’ predictions for Sky Sports this week, the pundit jotted down a 2-2 draw between the Reds and Chelsea. The ex-Arsenal man said: “I think Frank Lampard wants to attack, which opens up the counter-attack scenario for Liverpool. They both got bad results in Europe through the week, they are making mistakes that they didn’t make last season and you can get at their defence.

“Pedro and Willian behind Tammy Abraham is a trio of danger. They need to find the killer pass in this game, which I think they will. Liverpool will pin them in when they can, but it will be an open game of football, which will see Liverpool drop their 100 percent record.”

Verdict: Perhaps if there is anyone out there to beat Liverpool right now, Chelsea could be one of them. Abraham is in outrageously good form, bagging a hat-trick against Wolves and putting himself on seven goals in five Premier League games. And, in a similar vein of form, Mason Mount has three goals in five games, although he remains a doubt for the Blues. As Nicholas alluded to, both sides endured poor results in midweek, with Liverpool losing to Napoli and Chelsea losing to Valencia. However, with injuries to both sides, and the form of Abraham, the Scot may have got this one spot on.

Leeds: Noel Whelan slams Bielsa for over-relying on Phillips

Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan has slammed Marcel Bielsa for over-relying on Kalvin Phillips, as told to Football Insider.

Phillips is one of four Whites players yet to miss a minute of Championship actions this season (WhoScored), with the defensive midfielder, along with Adam Forshaw, Ben White and goalkeeper Kiko Casilla currently Bielsa’s most heavily relied on options at Elland Road.

Leeds-born Phillips has even featured throughout both of his side’s Carabao Cup ties this term, with the 23-year-old one of only three players to remain in the starting line-up from the eleven who beat Stoke 3-0 in the league last Saturday.

Whelan now fears Bielsa’s handling of Phillips could risk the midfielder being sidelined or simply burning out, after his former side suffered numerous injuries last season.

“Yes, I think so,” Whelan told Football Insider when asked if Phillips was being overplayed. “The games are coming thick and fast and it’s a long season where you need your best players fit and firing throughout.

“Bielsa needs to show common sense and carefully man-manage the key players like Kalvin. I don’t think he should have played in the cup games, they were good opportunities to rest him and give someone else a chance.

“I hoped he wouldn’t play against Stoke the other night. I wanted us to win the match, but there is enough quality in the squad for Kalvin not to play every minute of every game.

“Given the amount of injuries we got last season, you can’t deny it’s a massive issue keeping everyone on the park.”

If Phillips is starting to burn out already, he is doing a good job of hiding it, as the Leeds product is currently averaging more tackles (5.8 to 4.1) and more successful tackles (3.8 to 2.8) per ninety minutes than he did throughout his 44 second-tier appearances including the Play-Offs last season, according to data collected by WhoScored.

The defensive midfielder is also averaging the same number of interceptions (1.4) and more blocks (1.6 to 1.4), as well as playing more passes (68.8 to 62.9) and is finding teammates more frequently (only mislaying 9.6 passes compared to 11.2) so far this term.

Bielsa not resting Phillips while he had the chance to in the Carabao Cup could come back to haunt the Argentine further down the line, though, as the Whites now only have league games to play until entering the FA Cup in the Third Round come the turn of the year.
