Rangers handed Jed Wallace boost

An update has emerged on Rangers transfer target Jed Wallace, regarding his contract situation at Championship side Millwall.

What’s the talk?

According to Football League World, Rangers target Jed Wallace is increasingly unlikely to sign a new deal with Millwall as the Championship outfit continue to struggle to agree terms with him.

The report claims that Rangers, Celtic and West Ham are among the teams keen on the winger, who is out of contract at the end of the campaign.

Excitement

Rangers fans will surely be excited after reading this update on Wallace’s future. It appears as though the chances of him signing an extension with Millwall are slim, which means that the Gers would be able to snap him up on a pre-contract deal in January should he be interested in moving to Scotland.

Steven Gerrard could land him on a free transfer next summer and add a quality midfielder to his squad without paying a penny in transfer fees. This is why supporters will be excited, as the club could be inching closer to securing a bargain deal for a talented forward.

Millwall manager Gary Rowett once heaped praise on the ex-Portsmouth winger, saying: “It seems Jed Wallace is instrumental in everything we achieve at the moment. His recent stats are unbelievable.”

His statistics for Millwall in the Championship back up these claims from Rowett. He has three goals and three assists in eight games this term, having managed 11 goals and five assists last season.

Wallace also racked up 10 goals and 13 assists in the 2019/20 second-tier campaign, showing that he has the quality to score and assist goals on a regular basis.

Rangers fans will be buzzing to read that he looks set to leave Millwall on a free transfer, as it opens the door for the Gers to swoop in. If he does make a move up north and goes on to translate his form for the Lions up to Scotland then he could be a valuable asset in the final third for Gerrard.

American franchise for English Premier League?

A report in today’s Daily Telegraph claims the ECB has held talks with a New York-based investment company in a bid to broaden the appeal of its Twenty20 English Premier League which is set to launch in 2010.The newspaper states that Durham chairman Clive Leach met with representatives from Sports Capital Partners Worldwide (SCPW) in the USA this week. It is believed the talks centred on the possibility of a US-based team joining the competition.SCPW is a sports media and entertainment company that owns Major League Soccer and ice hockey franchises, as well as operating as Real Madrid’s North American ventures. It was one of the companies that expressed an interest in getting involved in the aborted nine-franchise EPL earlier this year. The 20-team tournament will include all 18 first-class counties as well as a Stanford XI. The ECB is looking for a high-profile team to full the 20th slot, and this week’s meeting indicate it is keen to get involvement from the USA.The USA is seen as a massive, largely untapped market, and attempts to break into it have foundered mainly because of the presence of the USA Cricket Association, an organisation in such a mess it has twice been suspended by the ICC. Despite fresh elections in March and a new constitution, it remains shambolic. That Leach, who a firm supporter of Clarke, has held talks with SCPW indicates the ECB is prepared to bypass the USACA and go straight to the people with the money and the expertise.

Sheth drops West Ham claim involving Milenkovic

Speaking live on Sky Sports News (via Football Daily), journalist Dharmesh Sheth has made a West Ham United claim involving manager David Moyes and transfer target Nikola Milenkovic.

The Lowdown: West Ham and Milenkovic saga…

The Hammers have been in talks to sign Milenkovic for nearly a fortnight following the club’s decision to prioritise the signing of a new centre-half before August 31.

Indeed, despite their alarming lack of depth going forward, West Ham and manager Moyes are keen to reinforce their central defensive options.

Both Kurt Zouma and Milenkovic have been the main targets, with claims even emerging last week that the latter man had his bags packed and a London Stadium move was imminent (Tuttosport).

However, as the talks die down, Sky journalist Sheth has shed some light on the situation.

The Latest: Sky reporter drops Milenkovic and Moyes claim…

Speaking live on air (via FD), Sheth has made a West Ham claim involving Moyes and Milenkovic as he explains why the Serbian powerhouse has not become a Hammers player.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-news-3/” title=”West Ham latest news…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

“West Ham were also in for Fiorentina’s Nikola Milenkovic, that looked very close, and we all thought that Milenkovic would be coming to the London Stadium,” he said to Sky.

“But, I’m told that David Moyes decided that he wasn’t 100 per cent convinced that he was the right man for his squad.

“Because at the end of the day, the way it works at West Ham, yes David Sullivan will do the finances but David Moyes will make the final decision on whether a player comes in or not.”

The Verdict: Frustrating update…

Moyes recently spoke of the importance to carefully hand pick players he is certain will improve West Ham’s squad (football.london), but with the August 31 deadline fast approaching, they cannot afford to dilly-dally much longer.

Ahead of a long season as they also compete in the Europa League group stages, the Scotsman will have just Craig Dawson, Issa Diop and Angelo Ogbonna to choose from as senior centre-back options in this moment.

Not to mention they are severely lacking alternative forward options to Michail Antonio, who spent a lot of 2020/2021 on the treatment table.

It really is now make or break for West Ham with new additions arguably a necessity, and they seem to have missed out on Milenkovic who has been described as ‘affordable’ by Italian football experts (Conor Clancy, speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern).

Intikhab Alam was only offered the job as Pakistan coach after Javed Miandad turned down an offer of a fourth stint in the position. Ijaz Butt, the PCB chairman, said Miandad had been Pakistan’s first choice to replace Geoff Lawson, who was sacked as the coach on Friday.”Intikhab was our second choice after we first went for Javd Miandad,” Butt told . “But it was very good of Javed to tell us that he was not interested in the position and that he would rather help us in other ways in an advisory capacity.”Intikhab will first take charge of the team in Abu Dhabi but I hope that he will remain in the post for two years but this needs to be cleared by the board first. I know that Intikhab has an excellent rapport with the players and I am keen for him to take Pakistan cricket back to where it belongs, and to give us the success we should be having.”Miandad most recently held the coaching role from 2003 to 2004, when he was eventually replaced by Bob Woolmer. He had also been coach in 1998-99 and 2000-01. Intikhab has also had a previous spell as the team’s coach, from 1999 to 2000.

Rangers: Alex Rae slams John Lundstram

Former Glasgow Rangers player Alex Rae hammered John Lundstram following his performance in the Gers’ 1-0 defeat to Dundee United on Saturday.

The Lowdown: Gers suffer loss

Last term, the Gers went the entire Premiership campaign unbeaten (thefishy.co.uk). However, it took them just two matches this time around to lose their first game (Sky Sports).

The £6.3m-valued Lundstram (Transfermarkt) was selected in the starting line-up by Steven Gerrard, just as he was against Malmo in the first leg of the Gers’ third round Champions League qualifying tie – the Light Blues were on the losing side on both occasions.

The Latest: Rae slams Lundstram

Speaking on Clyde1 Superscoreboard (via Ibrox News), BT Sport pundit Rae was far from happy with the 27-year-old’s display on Saturday. He said:

“You look at Lundstram in the middle of the park, I am struggling to see what he is actually bringing at the moment.

“I have to take on board that like most players that come to a new club he is trying to get up to speed, but I don’t know what he is bringing to the park.

“Rangers need someone to go from middle to front so that they can get runners going in behind, because when you are playing against a team that have a low block, two banks that you have to break, you need to get runners going in behind and get them stretched to find those gaps.”

The Verdict: Dilemma for Gerrard

It has not been the best start to Lundstram’s career north of the border. Having signed on a free transfer from Sheffield United (rangers.co.uk), many believed that the midfielder’s arrival would provide a big boost to the 55-time Scottish champions. So far, though, he has looked off the pace and has struggled to deal with what is being asked of him, already finding himself shipping criticism not just from Rae, but from numerous Gers fans.

The second leg of that Malmo clash is on Tuesday – after losing the first leg 2-1, the Gers must win to give themselves a chance of progressing to the play-off round. After this latest showing against the Tangerines, Gerrard now has a dilemma as to whether to include Lundstram in the starting line-up for the match against the Swedish champions.

Aston Villa: Roma make Anwar El-Ghazi bid

AS Roma have made a bid for Aston Villa winger Anwar El-Ghazi, according to Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Villa wanted to keep El Ghazi

The 26-year-old ended the previous campaign in fine form, scoring four of his 10 Premier League goals in the final seven games of the season.

Reports back in May suggested that Villa had made a transfer U-turn and would look to keep El Ghazi beyond the summer following Trezeguet’s injury.

However, it appears as if Villa many now made a second transfer U-turn on the £38,000-a-week Dutchman.

The Latest: Source shares update

According to Football Insider, who were informed by a Villa source, Dean Smith is now ready to listen to offers for El Ghazi, with the report suggesting that Villa are closing in on multiple wide additions.

Todd Cantwell and Leon Bailey have been two wide men that have been linked with a move to the Midlands.

It is believed that a fee in excess of £10m will be required to sign El Ghazi, with Jose Mourinho thought to be a major admirer of the Villa man.

The Verdict: Incomings key

As long as Villa can get their multiple wide additions over the line, with the latest report believing the club are closing in on their targets, then selling El Ghazi may not be too big of a blow.

Smith would have Jack Grealish, Emiliano Buendia, Bertrand Traore and possibly two more who could play out wide against Watford on August 14th, with Trezeguet set tobe sidelined for a prolonged period of time.

However, if Villa move on El Ghazi and fail to bring in any more wide additions, it could turn out to be a costly call.

Liverpool fans react to Taiwo Awoniyi news

A number of Liverpool supporters are happy with the news that Taiwo Awoniyi will complete a summer move to Bundesliga side Union Berlin.

Jurgen Klopp could have a busy summer on his hands, as he looks to perfect his Reds squad ahead of next season.

There is plenty of focus on which players could come in and make difference, but there are also individuals who will head the other way to clear up funds and make room on the wage bill.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359326”]

Awoniyi is one of them, with the Nigerian spending last season on loan in Berlin and Klopp seemingly not seeing a future for him at Liverpool.

Ironically, the 23-year-old has just been handed a UK work permit, but his permanent exit from Anfield is now almost complete.

According to Goal‘s Neil Jones on Twitter, Awoniyi will seal a £6.5million move to Berlin permanently, with a medical taking place on Tuesday.
