NUFC: Magpies keen on French forward

An update has emerged on Newcastle United and their transfer pursuit of Borussia Monchengladbach’s Alassane Plea.

What’s the talk?

According to French outlet L’Equipe, the Magpies are keen on a deal to sign the attacker to bolster their squad this month.

The report claims that Newcastle have asked Allan Saint-Maximin, who was a teammate of Plea’s at Nice in Ligue 1, for information on the attacker.

Buzzing

Fans will surely be buzzing with this news as it suggests that Eddie Howe is seriously interested in a deal to sign a player who could be a terrific addition to the team.

Although he has not had the best of seasons this term, with three goals in 11 Bundesliga starts, Plea has previously shown how deadly he can be in front of goal at the top level.

He managed 11 goals and four assists domestically and in Europe combined for Gladbach last season, having produced ten strikes and 11 assists in the 2019/20 campaign. The forward also provided 12 goals and four assists in his debut year with the German side, coming off the back of 27 Ligue 1 strikes in his final two seasons for Nice.

Swiss manager Lucien Favre once claimed the gem has “enormous potential” and Plea’s teammate Christoph Kramer said that he “scores out of nothing”.

Dieter Hecking previously praised his ability to find the back of the net, saying: “It’s great that we have a forward who can score goals.

“It’s a bit surprising that he’s already scored two headers. You couldn’t see that from training. Of course it’s quality when he sees situations. I’m very happy with the way he’s progressing.”

His goalscoring prowess is highlighted by his impressive record for Nice and Gladbach over the years and shows why fans will be delighted with this news. He is a goalscorer and has proven that in France and Germany, suggesting that he could come in at St. James’ Park and be able to find the back of the net in the Premier League.

This could, therefore, increase the club’s chances of staving off relegation as his goals could win crucial points for Howe’s side and allow them to crawl out of the bottom three. Therefore, PIF must ensure that they are able to get a deal over the line for Plea to bolster the ex-Bournemouth coach’s squad.

How T20s became a serious business for Australia

Twenty20 began as a giggle for Australia, who treated it as a third-rate concept and preferred to save their focus for Tests and ODIs

Twenty20 began as a giggle for Australia, who treated it as a third-rate concept and preferred to save their focus for Tests and ODIs. It was an approach that resulted in them quickly becoming also-rans in the format, something that hurt them more than they expected. Eventually the lack of results forced a regeneration that has led to Michael Clarke’s men making the World Twenty20 final against England in Barbados on Sunday.A gimmicky new format
17 February, 2005
New Zealand and Australia turned up to a retro costume party to christen the new fad in Auckland and Ricky Ponting summed up the affair. “I think it is difficult to play seriously,” he said. Ponting was the star with 98 off 55 balls, including five sixes, but never matched the performance again, or warmed to the style of play.In modern terms he was a traditionalist, like most of his team-mates at the time, and Twenty20 was a popular gimmick. Still, Australia have beaten their initial total of 214 only once since then and Ponting wasn’t totally dismissive of the concept. “If it does become an international game then I’m sure the novelty won’t be there all the time.”Heading south at Southampton
13 June, 2005
Australia didn’t realise it then, but the start of their Ashes defeat began at Southampton during the second Twenty20 international. They scored only 79 after being 31 for 7, and misread the mood of England. Damien Martyn outlined the outlook of the coach John Buchanan, who was focussing instead on the opening Test.”Buck was saying: ‘It’s only a muck-around game, don’t worry about it’,” Martyn said. “We trained for four hours on the morning. So we went from the nets next door, busting a gut, into a T20 game where they rolled up playing it like a Test match and flogged us.”Ricky Ponting wonders where it all went wrong in the 2009 World Twenty20•Getty Images

A World Cup isn’t a big deal
September 2007
A global trophy was crafted quickly for the shortest game, but Adam Gilchrist and his team-mates were more concerned with the upcoming tour of India than the matches in South Africa. “It was no secret that our attitude to Twenty20 cricket was undeveloped,” Gilchrist wrote in his autobiography. “As a group, we didn’t think this tournament was that big a deal.”An opening loss to Zimbabwe embarrassed them and they recovered to reach the semi-final, when they were knocked out by India. “It dawned on us that maybe Twenty20 would be the big revolution that some were predicting,” Gilchrist wrote. Not winning a global tournament changed their thinking a little, but it was still more novelty than necessary.First-round losers
6-8 June, 2009
It took three days and two defeats for Australia to drop from the 2009 World Twenty20, delivering more red faces and leaving them unranked for this year’s event. Once again it was the first lapse on a trip that ended in Ashes defeat. “I’d like to be able to tell you that I knew what was going wrong,” Ponting said after losing to Sri Lanka and exiting the tournament.Australia had started to pick some specialists, but didn’t have the batting fire power or bowling nous to counter West Indies or Kumar Sangakkara’s outfit. Ponting had joked the side wouldn’t lose its final group match because it would mean having to spend two weeks in Leicester. It wasn’t so funny when it happened. At that point Australia had lost five Twenty20 internationals in a row and Ponting was soon announcing his retirement from the format.Twenty20 has provided a career highlight for Michael Hussey•Getty Images

Team overhaul
16 October, 2009
Michael Clarke became the full-time captain and Cameron White, a bits-and-pieces player until now, was a surprise choice as his deputy. After years of trying to mix a couple of specialists with the Test and ODI stars, the Australian selectors show they are serious about putting together a side made for Twenty20.”We’ve got a young and enthusiastic group, but we must recognise that we’ve got a lot of work to do in Twenty20 cricket and our recent form hasn’t been good,” Clarke said. “Naturally, we’ll target the World Twenty20 in the Caribbean next year and I feel we have plenty of talent to genuinely mount a challenge in that tournament.” It sounded more like hopeful PR talk at the time.New team, old focus
May 2010
Following a warm-up loss to Zimbabwe, Australia were experiencing déjà vu. Even though the results hadn’t yet changed, the demeanour had. Clarke even said Twenty20 had “become exactly the same as one-day and Test cricket”. His men quickly displayed the same steel that has driven them in the other formats through most of the 2000s, and from the moment the tournament started they were a familiar foe to the rest of the world. In the aftermath of the unbelievable semi-final victory against Pakistan, which took their streak to six, Michael Hussey rated the winning feeling better than his 2006-07 Ashes moment in Adelaide. The comparisons may seem unreasonable to traditional cricket followers, but they prove the team is no longer treating Twenty20 like a toy.

Newcastle can replace Gayle with Morelos

The January transfer window is well underway and Newcastle United are being linked with players left, right and centre at the moment.

Eddie Howe’s squad is in desperate need of strengthening, and deals done this month could go a long way to helping them to remain in the Premier League for at least another season.

They are currently 19th in the table and have only won one league game with half of the campaign gone, highlighting the need for reinforcements.

Time to brutally axe Gayle

CBS Sports recently reported that Leicester, Newcastle and Everton are all interested in signing Morelos from Rangers this month.

By bringing the Colombian to St James’ Park, Howe could brutally axe Dwight Gayle from the club and sell him in the coming weeks. The former Crystal Palace man is reportedly one of the players the Magpies are willing to offload, and the prospective arrival of Morelos could allow them to cash in.

He is under contract until 2024 but has only played 27 minutes of Premier League football this season. This suggests that the £40k-per-week dud is not in Howe’s plans, so signing a replacement in the form of Morelos would mean that they can sell him without worrying about their attacking squad depth.

The Rangers marksman could come in and add plenty of goals to the Magpies. He has proven his quality for the Scottish champions over the years, with 107 goals in 211 games north of the border.

Speaking anonymously to The Athletic previously, an ex-Scottish Premiership defender lauded the striker’s strength, saying: “When he goes to shield the ball it’s so difficult. His body strength and ball control are very good, so he makes it very difficult for you. He is deceptive with his physical attributes, but what I’d say he’s best at is when the ball is played up to him. He lets you think that you can nip in front of him and then his timing to put his body in and spin you is excellent.”

Another player added: “He’s kind of dropping deep now and going out wide. That’s a nightmare for defenders because he’s your player that you’re meant to be man-marking but then you’re dragged out of position and you’ve got midfield runners taking his space.”

These testimonies highlight what Morelos could bring to Newcastle aside from his goalscoring. He has the physical strength and positional intelligence to cause constant problems for opposition defenders, which means that he could open up space for his teammates even when he is not scoring himself. Coupled with his scoring record, that is why he could be an excellent signing.

The Colombian could therefore be the perfect replacement for Gayle and improve the Magpies’ options at the top end of the pitch. It would then be down to the club to find a new employer for the 32-year-old, whether that comes this month or in the summer.

Hamilton-Brown joins Surrey

After a protracted period of speculation and discussion, Rory Hamilton-Brown will join Surrey next season, where he will become captain, after signing a three-year contract with the London club.Hamilton-Brown, 22, will become the youngest captain on the country circuit, returning to the club he left only two seasons ago. Shawn of opportunities at the Oval, Hamilton-Brown moved to Sussex in 2008 and made eight first-class appearances and was an important member in the club’s recent one-day success.Leaving Sussex was a difficult decision for Hamilton-Brown but he returns to Surrey to fulfil a life-long ambition. “It has taken a considerable amount of soul-searching to reach this decision and I’d like to place on record my sincere thanks to Sussex for the fantastic support they have given me and their understanding of my final decision,” said Hamilton-Brown.”I leave the club with great memories and the club, the players and the coaches have played a major part in my development as a player. It’s no exaggeration to say that returning to Surrey as captain is the dream of a lifetime for me personally as well as a massive honour and a huge responsibility. I will make sure I fulfil the confidence that Surrey and specifically Chris Adams have shown in me and I am determined to help bring the club success in the future.”Chris Adams, who is now the director of cricket at Surrey, captained Hamilton-Brown at Sussex in 2008 and has said he wanted a captain to unite the players following former-skipper Mark Butcher’s retirement last season. He believes Hamilton-Brown, despite his inexperience, is the man for the job.”To me, captains have to have certain attributes such as charisma, a galvanising spirit, intelligent and tactical brains and the ability to inspire people to follow them – Rory Hamilton-Brown has these in abundance,” said Adams.”I’m sure that the addition of Rory to our squad will give us stability, unity and strong leadership for many years to come and enable us – for the first time in two years – to provide consistent leadership on the field of the play. I am confident that the return of Rory Hamilton-Brown to Surrey at the start of a new decade will come to be seen as a defining moment in the turnaround of this club.”Hamilton-Brown has been with England Performance Programme in South Africa recently, on the back of the promise he displayed last season, and Sussex were reluctant to lose such a bright prospect. However coach Mark Robinson said that once the player decided he wanted to leave, it would have been detrimental to the team to force him to stay.”Our aim since we signed Rory was to work on his undoubted potential to create an England cricketer and we believe that we have made good progress along that path. Our view remains that he would have been best served remaining with Sussex as a key part of our first-team squad, in all forms of the game for 2010, to achieve that ambition,” said Robinson.”However, Rory is adamant he would like to take this opportunity to captain Surrey and given the importance of our strong united team spirit in the dressing room, myself and the captain believe it is best for Sussex to allow him to move. Rory has been a pleasure to work with during his two seasons at Sussex and the whole coaching staff wish him all the best in his new role.”Jim May, the Sussex chairman, echoed the feelings of disappointment but confirmed that Sussex have been compensated for the lost. “We are disappointed that Rory has made this choice. It was only the exceptional circumstances – Rory’s opportunity to become captain – that led us to reluctantly grant consent to his departure. We are able to confirm a significant compensation payment has been made by Surrey to secure Rory’s release.”

Sunderland: Neil stole the show

Sunderland were held to a 1-1 draw in a frustrating clash away at Shrewsbury Town in League One on Tuesday night.

The Black Cats sit sixth in the table and five points off league-leaders Rotherham, albeit they have one game in hand on the Millers.

Lee Johnson’s side went into half-time against Shrewsbury with a 1-0 lead and the hosts down to 10 men, following Luke O’Nien’s opener and David Davis’ dismissal. However, a second-half equaliser from Daniel Udoh ensured that the points were shared.

Forget Pritchard

Alex Pritchard caught the eye in the number 10 role as he provided the assist for O’Nien’s opener. It was his second assist in 14 league matches this season and he created three chances in total throughout the match. However, another player stole the show for Sunderland in the midfield – Dan Neil.

The 19-year-old from South Shields put in a sublime performance in the middle of the park and ran the game for the Black Cats. Whilst Pritchard managed an assist and showed off his creativity in the hole behind the striker, Neil managed to outshine him with his display.

On the ball, he was excellent. Per SofaScore, the wiz had a whopping 91 touches of the ball and completed 96% of his passes as he created four chances for his teammates – one more than Pritchard. He also completed an impressive 11 of his 13 attempted long passes, showing off his passing range along with his ability to set up his teammates.

His control of the match was highlighted in his possession statistics. He completed a high percentage of his attempted passes and enjoyed a huge number of touches, with his chance creation and long pass attempts also showing that he was not playing simple, easy, passes to boost his numbers.

Defensively, he was also solid. Per SofaScore, he won six of his 11 individual duels and made three tackles during the game, whilst only being dribbled past once. He also made one clearance and committed one foul in the 90 minutes, proving that he can perform well at both ends of the pitch – defending his own goal and driving forward to make an impact in the final third.

Therefore, his complete performance ensured that he ran the game for Johnson and is why he was the real star of the show over Pritchard. Hopefully, the youngster will continue to produce displays of this standard throughout the rest of the season and will be able to lift the club further up the table.

– A situação é horrível.

-Não recebi nenhum contato, ninguém me procurou.
