Celtic: Keane unlikely to become new boss

Celtic’s search for a new manager has really gathered pace over the last few days but unfortunately for majority shareholder Dermot Desmond, he still no closer to uncovering Neil Lennon’s successor.

Roy Keane has been the favourite in the last week but fresh claims have quashed those rumours.

What’s the word?

Last week, it quickly became apparent that Keane was leading the race to become the new manager of Celtic.

Football Insider revealed that discussions and an interview had even taken place. However, in a remarkable twist, it now looks like the Irishman is unlikely to head back to Parkhead.

The Times have sources close to Keane in Ireland who have revealed that a Celtic reunion is doubtful.

Keane turned down the Hoops job in 2014 and he looks set to miss out on the hot seat once again.

Amazing news for supporters

When it emerged that Keane was in the running to become the new manager of Celtic, it was not very well received by plenty of the club’s supporters.

Well followed Bhoys podcaster Paul John Dykes admitted that news of the Manchester United legend’s potential arrival had gone down like a led balloon with fans.

You can see why, too. Keane hasn’t managed for the best part of ten years and he didn’t exactly achieve a great deal during his time with Sunderland and then Ipswich.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-celtic-manager-and-transfer-news-roy-keane-nicky-butt-jesse-marsch-scott-brown” title=”Latest Celtic manager and transfer news!”]

He got the Mackems promoted but his win percentage during the course of his managerial career speaks volumes. The 49-year-old has a pretty disastrous win rate of just 38.7%.

The television pundit has taken guidance from Martin O’Neill during his three spells as assistant manager under him. However, with that in mind, it feels like Keane is more equipped to be a number two.

News that the former midfielder is now less likely to be given the reins at Paradise should be music to the ears of supporters.

Desmond can now turn to alternatives. Chris Wilder has been linked, a manager we’ve suggested is a better option for the Bhoys.

Leeds decision ‘correct’, says ex-ref

Former Premier League referee Mark Halsey believes it was the ‘correct’ decision to only award Leeds United’s Tyler Roberts a yellow card against Chelsea.

Leeds drew 0-0 at home to Thomas Tuchel’s in-form Blues side last Saturday, in what represented a good point for Marcelo Bielsa’s men.

They went toe-to-toe with their big-spending opponents throughout at Elland Road, with the draw meaning they currently sit 12th in the table.

[freshpress-poll id=“348945″]

One of the key decisions of the game saw Roberts receive a booking after a challenge on Jorginho in the second half, a punishment befitting of the crime according to Halsey.

Halsey believes right decision was made in Leeds-Chelsea clash

Speaking to This Is Futbol, Halsey claimed Kevin Friend was right not to send the Leeds ace off, with the correct decision ultimately made:

“It wasn’t violent conduct; you knew it straight away. It’s just his follow-through and he’s gone onto the back of his calf so for me, in that instance it’s not violent conduct, I think the yellow card was correct.

“I think that had it been a serious situation, VAR would have got involved in that situation.”

Transfer Tavern take

Halsey is right in his assessment, with Roberts’ tackle no doubt a little on the reckless side, but certainly not malicious and warranting a sending off.

If players are receiving their marching orders for challenges of that ilk, the number of red cards will be off the scale before too long.

Tottenham players baffled by Jose call

According to a report by The Daily Mail, Tottenham players have been left baffled behind the scenes following Jose Mourinho’s treatment of Gareth Bale and Dele Alli – with there allegedly being several ‘disillusioned’ members of the squad.

The Portuguese boss is allegedly facing mounting pressure following his side’s stumble to ninth in the Premier League table, but he is somewhat shielded by the fact chairman Daniel Levy would face huge costs for his early dismissal (The Daily Mail).

Tottenham players baffled by Jose call

Exiting Europe and losing more ground in the top four race, however, would increase the pressure on Mourinho ten-fold – with The Daily Mail now claiming there are ‘several’ disillusioned players behind the scenes.

While some players are generally supportive of their boss, some squad members in particular have been taken aback by Mourinho’s call to shun both Alli and Bale to the fringes.

The Spurs duo have started just three Premier League games combined this season (WhoScored), leaving players who were particularly close under Mauricio Pochettino’s reign surprised by this move not to play them.

Alli and Bale breakdown

Bale was signed in the summer from Real Madrid on a season-long loan, with Levy having dreamed of bringing him back to north London (Eurosport).

Alli, meanwhile, was heavily linked with a move to Paris-Saint Germain in the January transfer window but Tottenham would not let him go without finding a replacement (Fabrizio Romano).

Time will tell whether Mourinho will feature the pair in his plans as he looks to climb back up the Premier League table.

Aston Villa: Update issued about Jacob Ramsey %%sep%% %%sitename%%

The Athletic have recently issued an update about the situation of Aston Villa’s young midfielder Jacob Ramsey.

Ramsey, currently 19, is a product of Villa’s youth academy and broke into the club’s first-team only earlier this year, but there seems to be interest in the young midfielder.

Championship interest in Ramsey

The Athletic released an update on Keinan Davis, but the piece also carried some bits of information about Ramsey’s situation at Villa Park. The article revealed that Ramsey is on the target list of many Championship clubs right now but as things stand, Villa expect the youngster to stick around.

Ramsey was loaned out to Doncaster in January 2020 earlier this year but returned to Villa Park in the summer of 2020 (as per Transfermarkt).

Birmingham Mail had reported about Ramsey last month, saying that Championship clubs are indeed interested in him. The report from the Athletic though, could be a positive considering how Villa expect the 19-year-old to stay.

Gabriel Agbonlahor has previously praised Ramsey and said: “As an Aston Villa player who went through the academy and made my debut at the same age, it’s amazing to see.

“Hopefully the rest of the Under-18s and Under-23s can see him as someone to look up to and try and get into that first-team as well because Dean Smith has proved if you’re good enough, he’ll play you.”

Loan move might benefit Ramsey

In the Premier League this season, Ramsey has made five appearances and he has played only 122 minutes of football in the competition. He has played more in the League Cup and keeping that in mind, the upcoming FA Cup may allow him more game time (as per Transfermarkt).

Having said that, the 19-year-old might need more game time to develop and because of how well the first XI are playing, Villa may not give him that. So it might make more sense for the club to loan Ramsey out – especially considering how well he had done at Doncaster last season.

In other news, Villa fans have been delighted about the news about a potential exit of a player – read more about it here.

Coritiba aguarda atacante paraguaio nesta segunda-feira

Glasgow Rangers defender George Edmundson faces uncertain future at Ibrox

Glasgow Rangers have suspended Jordan Jones and George Edmundson for breaching Covid regulations, reports say…

What’s the word?

According to the club’s official website, the two Rangers players attended a private gathering at the weekend with others from outside of their household.

Rangers chief Stewart Robertson said that their behaviour was totally “unacceptable”, commenting: “The Chairman Douglas Park, Ross Wilson, Steven Gerrard and I discussed this matter as soon as it was brought to our attention.

“We are completely aligned in our action and the standards that are being set at Rangers.

“We will not tolerate behaviour that does not follow those standards and it is totally unacceptable for any of our players to be involved in anything that puts at risk the excellent protocols that have been put in place at Rangers.”

Edmundson has endured a difficult start to the season so far as the defender has made just two appearances in all competitions at the time of writing. It’s fair to say that the 23-year-old will hardly have done himself any favours at all whatsoever as he arguably already faces an uncertain future at the Ibrox outfit, although this may force Gerrard’s hand when the transfer market re-opens in January.

Nail in the coffin

As a professional footballer, or any person in the public interest for that matter, some may argue that they have a certain level of accountability and responsibility as a result to set the standards on and off the pitch for the rest of the public to follow.

On this occasion, it cuts even deeper than that. Not only has Edmundson let himself down, he has also let his teammates down with his abhorrent behaviour as well.

As Rangers legend Barry Ferguson rightly says: “Trust? They’ve just about broken every rule in the book, not just when it comes to Covid-19 protocols but also in terms of what’s expected from a proper team-mate.”

Edmundson was left out of the squad for the Europa League group stages last month, which cast doubt over his long-term future at the club, having made two appearances against Lincoln Red Imps and Motherwell FC respectively.

Forget about a loan, as far as we are concerned, this could be the final nail in the coffin for Edmundson’s Gers career.

The Manchester-born centre-back received praise from Gerrard for his “faultless” performance after he made his long-awaited league debut but it’s fair to say that his career has somewhat fallen by the wayside.

Connor Goldson has arguably cemented his place in the starting line-up this season, whilst Filip Helander and Leon Balogun have worked their way into contention to start in Nikola Katic’s absence. However, Katic has recently hinted he could make a quick-fire return, which would push Edmundson even further down the pecking order.

At this stage in his career, he needs to be playing regularly, which is something that Gerrard will not be able to provide. So, it’s about time the Light Blues cut their losses before it’s too late. Get him gone, Gers.

Everton: Noel Whelan says Richarlison will be missed v Newcastle United

Noel Whelan thinks that Richarlison will be a big miss for Everton versus Newcastle United in the Premier League.

Speaking to Football Insider, the former Leeds United striker believes that the Brazil international may have been a key player for the Goodison Park faithful in getting all three points at St. James’ Park and also tipped Bernard to come in as his replacement instead of Alex Iwobi:

“Richarlison for me is one that is a massive loss. Iwobi didn’t take his opportunity so Bernard might come in, I think, on that side, linking up play.

“Iwobi, for me, has done nothing since he’s come to Everton and he’s not pushed Richarlison or any of the front three, to be honest with you. If he starts the game, I’ll be very, very surprised, I think it might be an opportunity for somebody else.

“Richarlison is going to be a massive miss.”

Richarlison is a ‘standout’ player for Everton

Indeed, Richarlison has been and still is a ‘standout’ player for the Merseyside club, and thus could be greatly missed by Carlo Ancelotti’s team against the Magpies as Whelan suggests.

The 23-year old has scored no fewer than 33 goals and made a further eight assists in 86 games in all competitions for the Toffees over the last three consecutive terms (Transfermarkt).

His eye for a goal could have been vital in a tough away game in the top flight, but he will miss the match versus the Toon through suspension following his straight red card against Liverpool in the Merseyside derby.

Richarlison has been great so far this season

Indeed, Richarlison has been brilliant so far this season, winning a quite staggering 9.6 of his duels per game in England’s highest division, as well as averaging 3.2 successful dribbles and 2.2 shots per game (Sofascore).

However, he will not be able to carry on his fine form in the versus Newcastle tomorrow afternoon, and as Whelan has claimed, the striker may well turn out to be a huge loss for the Blues.

Chelsea: Manchester United enter the race for N’Golo Kante

Chelsea are looking to cash in on midfield talisman N’Golo Kante in order to balance the books in this transfer window.

Frank Lampard has seemingly identified a future without the France international in his squad and is looking for suitors to come in for his services. Inter Milan are highly interested in Kante but Chelsea’s asking price could prove to be too high for them to meet.

That’s according to Tuttosport (via Sport Witness), who have also linked Premier League rivals Manchester United with a move for the 29-year-old.

The Blues have firmly stated that a loan move will not be considered and are demanding a fee of €60m (£54.3m) in order to let Kante leave in this window.

With the recent signing of Kai Havertz and the likes of Mason Mount cementing his place in Lampard’s starting XI, the battle for minutes in Chelsea’s midfield is getting tougher.

Despite helping Chelsea to win the Premier League, FA Cup and Europa League, Kante’s time in west London appears to be coming to a close.

The Frenchman made just 22 league appearances last season due to several injuries sidelining him throughout the campaign. Four separate injuries kept him out of the squad at various intervals, with a hamstring problem seeing him miss the final five games of 2019/20 (via Transfermarkt).

Manchester United are reportedly ready to match Kante’s £54.3m price tag and can do so comfortably, according to the report. However, no official moves have been made as of yet.
