Anwar Ali blitz not enough for Sindh Knights

Anwar Ali cracked 67 from 36 deliveries but fell in the last over as Sindh Knights went down by six runs to Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Fighters in the opening game of the Pentangular One Day Cup in Karachi

ESPNcricinfo staff01-Jan-2015Anwar Ali cracked 67 from 36 deliveries but fell in the last over as Sindh Knights went down by six runs to Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Fighters in the opening game of the Pentangular One Day Cup in Karachi.Fighters appeared to be set for victory when Knights were reduced to 228 for 9 in their chase of 267 in the 48th over. But with an improbable 39 needed from 17 balls, Anwar nearly took Knights home. He came in at No. 7 with the score on 165 and clubbed eight fours and two sixes. Anwar’s charge meant Knights seemed to have the game in the bag with seven required from the last five deliveries but he was stumped off left-arm spinner Zafar Gohar, who was Fighters’ most successful bowler with 3 for 55. Yasir Shah was the most economical with 2 for 37, while captain Junaid Khan took 2 for 58.Asad Shafiq contributed a steady 56 in the chase, while captain Fawad Alam made a quick 62. Both the batsmen were gone before the score reached 200, though, and the lower order caved in before Anwar threatened to stun Fighters. After they chose to bat, Fighters innings was built by half-centuries from Israrullah (62) and Shoaib Malik (70) after which an unbeaten 103-run stand between Adnan Raees (50 not out) and Adil Amin (52 not out) took them to 266 for 4.

Road to Women's World Cup begins

England will attempt to put behind them the shock of losing the Test against India when they begin the one-day series in Scarborough on Thursday, on a day which marks the start of the road to the 2017 Women’s World Cup with the beginning of the Women’s Championship. The Championship, the first structured bilateral tournament in the women’s game, will have officially started a few hours earlier in Brisbane with Australia facing Pakistan. The other four teams involved are South Africa, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and West Indies. The introduction of the league comes at a time when the major challenge within the women’s game is to provide a sustainable volume of cricket and also ensure that a damaging divide does not start to emerge along funding lines.England and Australia are significantly ahead of the other nations in terms of financial investment and, although India’s victory at Wormsley showed that does not automatically transfer into on-field results, the women’s game needs to look after those countries where money is more of a challenge. One option put on the table in recent months was the Women’s International Cricket League (WICL), a privately funded and run T20 event proposed to be held in Singapore. The ECB and Cricket Australia, however, quickly doused talk of any private enterprise being allowed to take hold.”From an ICC perspective I suppose the real priority has been getting to the Women’s Championship positioned and rolling that out the best we can,” Clare Connor, the ECB head of women’s cricket, said. “Bilateral cricket has to be our priority and to give it context and meaning ahead of the next World Cup. Once we see that bed in and run smoothly, I’m sure there will be scope to look at a global T20 competition.”I think what will happen is that in the next 12-24 months, England, Australia and India will somehow discuss a way forward to make something like that happen. It would be good to have a tournament like that which could inject more money into the game and bolster the profile in a different way.”The Championship sees each team play each other in one home or away series that will include three ODIs counting towards the Championship over a two-and-a-half year period. As such, each side is guaranteed at least 21 ODIs over the tournament period. At the conclusion of the seven rounds, the top four sides will gain automatic qualification for the 2017 Women’s World Cup in England, while the bottom four sides will get a final chance of qualification through the Qualifier event.

RAFINHA ESTREIA E ENLOUQUECE A TORCIDA

Favourites Australia eye elusive crown

Overview

With 5934 runs from 214 matches, Brad Hodge, at 39, is the leading run-scorer in Twenty20 cricket•Getty Images

The list of trophies won by Australia over the years is long and impressive, but there is one conspicuous absence. For all their success in World Cups, Champions Trophy tournaments and Test cricket, the World T20 has eluded them. Of course the history of the event is short, stretching back only as far as 2007, but the lack of a title in any of the four editions so far staged bothers the Australians. They enter the 2014 tournament with their best chance yet and, according to most reputable betting companies, as the favourites. It is a favouritism based in part on their recent form against England and South Africa but as much on their batting strength as anything. David Warner, Aaron Finch, Shane Watson, Brad Hodge, George Bailey, Cameron White, Brad Haddin, Glenn Maxwell – that’s some pretty impressive depth. The absence of Mitchell Johnson due to injury will hurt them, although Mitchell Starc has developed into one of the finest fast bowlers in T20 cricket, and James Faulkner offers an important all-round option. In the early days of the World T20, Australia’s selectors did not grant the format due respect and assumed the one-day team would do the job. Over time, and with a new selection panel in place, the Australians have realised that to win this event they will need proven T20 performers, regardless of age.Initially T20 seemed a young man’s game; now it is recognised that older types in the twilight of their careers may just have the experience and wiles required. Hence the presence of 43-year-old Brad Hogg, 39-year-old Hodge and 36-year-old Haddin in this squad.”We’ve got the most balanced side that I’ve ever been involved with and a balanced squad,” said Watson, who is the only Australian to have been part of the squads for all five World T20s, including this one. “I think the versatility of this squad (is) more than any squad that I’ve played Twenty20 cricket for Australia. Certainly in all conditions against any opposition we can match up really well, I think it gives us more of a chance to be able win it.”

Key player

With Warner and Watson to occupy two of Australia’s top three batting spots, you would think the other man in that trio might fly under the radar. Except that Aaron Finch enters the tournament as the newly-crowned No.1-ranked T20 international batsman in the world. Last year, Finch smashed the record for the highest score in a T20 international when he plundered 156 against England in Southampton and his clean striking and ability to consistently clear the fence makes him as exciting a player as there is in this Australian squad.

Surprise package

The catalogue of T20 teams Brad Hodge has played for is almost as long and impressive as Australia’s trophy list. Surely nobody can be shocked by the presence of Twenty20 cricket’s all-time leading run scorer at this tournament? Well, yes, the inclusion of Hodge was a surprise to many people, not least Hodge himself.Often overlooked by the national selectors during his heyday, Hodge had long since written off his international career when he was recalled in January at 39. But his T20 experience, including in Bangladesh with the Barisal Burners, encouraged the selectors to take a punt. His Man-of-the-Match effort in the second T20 in South Africa this month suggested it might have been a good call.

Weakness

The Australians like the ball coming on to the bat and in the group stage they will face three teams strong on spin options – Pakistan, West Indies and India. There is also the question of whether their own slow bowling will be good enough. Hogg has experience but with the raw legspinner James Muirhead and the part-timer Glenn Maxwell as his main support in spinning conditions, they do look a little thin in that department.

World T20 history

They might not have won the trophy yet but in three of the four World T20s so far, Australia have made it to at least the semi-final stage. England beat them in the decider in 2010 and last time they were bundled out by eventual champions West Indies in a semi-final. Their low point was the 2009 tournament, when they failed to make it past the group stage.

Recent form

Australia are five from five this year after beating England 3-0 and South Africa 2-0. There could hardly be a better time to hit their peak. But it was only this summer that things started turning around for Bailey’s men – from the end of the previous World T20 until the games against England, their record was LLLWLL.

Moors tie with Tamil Union on rain-hit opening day

A round-up of all the matches played in the Premier Limited Overs Tournament on December 1, 2013

Heavy afternoon rains threatened to ruin the first day of the 2013/14 domestic cricket season, but results were possible in all but one of the six Premier Limited Overs matches, in Colombo.Moors Sports Club tied with Tamil Union via the Duckworth-Lewis method in their series opener, after having hit 170 for 7 in their 30 allocated overs. Moors’ No. 3 Oshada Fernando was the top run-scorer in the match, hitting 75 from 86 to assist his side’s recovery, following the early departure of both openers. The Tamil Union bowling figures perhaps suggested why Suranga Lakmal has been picked in Sri Lanka’s limited overs squad to the UAE over Shaminda Eranga. Lakmal took 2 for 31 from his 6 overs, but Eranga conceded more than ten runs an over, though he did claim a wicket. Rangana Herath was the most economical bowler, going at 2.33 runs in his six, while Ramith Rambukwella took two wickets. In his first List A match for Tamil Union, 20-year-old opener Pabasara Waduge struck 37 from 38 to set the chase off with promise, but despite his brisk 68-run partnership with Tillakaratne Dilshan, Moors’ offspinner removed both openers in the 12th over and sparked a stutter. When the rains came to wipe out play, Tamil Union were six wickets down, needing 33 to win from the last 28 deliveries.Ragama Cricket Club wiped out Colombo Cricket Club in under 26 overs, to secure a 113-run victory at the Premadasa Stadium, before the afternoon rains arrived. Ragama hit 207 for 4 in their 43 overs, thanks to a string of solid contributions from the top order – most from Lahiru Thirimanne, who top-scored with 54.Ragama’s opening seamers Lahiru Jayaratne and Nilanka Premaratne then ran through the CCC innings, sharing nine wickets for just 44 runs between them. They had CCC at 26 for 6 by the seventh over, and only one CCC batsman crossed 20, as they were bundled out for a paltry 94.Colts Cricket Club mowed down Badureliya Sports Club by seven wickets- the most emphatic victory of the opening round. Having been asked to bat at the Colts ground, Badureliya succumbed for 81 in 30.3 overs, with only two of their batsmen limping into double figures.Thisara Perera opened the bowling for Colts and took three wickets in his first four overs, to herald the collapse. He finished with figures of 3 for 15, and offspinner Dilruwan Perera also took three wickets later in the innings.Kusal Perera made his customary flying start in response hitting 41 from 38 balls, but both he and Thisara Perera had perished by the time the winning runs were scored, with almost 37 overs remaining in the innings.Centuries from 20-year-old opener Niroshan Dickwella and Kumar Sangakkara set up an 84-run Duckworth-Lewis win for Nondescripts Cricket Club over Bloomfield, a week after NCC had celebrated its 125th anniversary. Dickwella struck 13 fours and a six in his run-a-ball 133, and his 195-run second-wicket stand with Sangakkara effectively took the match away from the opposition. Sangakkara hit 102 in 92 balls, suggesting his extraordinary limited-overs form shows no signs of abating.NCC made 315 from their 50 overs, and although Dilshan Munaweera’s belligerent 62 at the top of the innings provided a brief spark, Bloomfield failed to build partnerships in the middle overs, as left-arm spinner Sohan Boralessa and offspinner Tharindu Kaushal shared 5 wickets between them. When rain stopped play, Bloomfield were 178 for 7 in 37.3 overs.Panadura Sports Club provided another batting catastrophe in their season-opener against Army Sports Club, who waltzed to an eight-wicket victory, at Army’s Panagoda ground. Panadura negotiated opening spells from the seam-bowlers, but Army’s three spinners arrived to wreak havoc early in the innings, and they collapsed for 60 in 22.4 overs.Ajantha Mendis was omitted in favour of legspinner Seekkuge Prasanna for Sri Lanka’s ODI squad against Pakistan, but Mendis had the better outing against Panadura, taking 3 for 14, while Prasanna claimed 2 for 14. Left-arm spinner Ravindra Palleguruge made the most dramatic impact on the match however, wiping out the lower order in 2.2 overs- a spell in which he claimed four wickets and conceded no runs. Army ran the total down in 14.2 overs. The only no-result of the round was played out between Sinhalese Sports Club and Ports Authority Cricket Club. Thilina Kandamby’s 49-ball, unbeaten 73 propelled SSC to 167 from their 26 overs, after a wet outfield had already slashed 24 overs from each innings.Ashan Priyanjan’s 66 from 42 led Ports Authority’s chase, and they needed 51 from 46 deliveries, and had six wickets in hand, when the rains came. Not enough overs had been bowled in the second innings for a winner to be decided.

Rogers back in the groove at Lord's

ScorecardChris Rogers was back churning out runs for Middlesex at Lord’s•Getty Images

Chris Rogers may have only made 21 runs for Australia in the Lord’s Test but nothing seems to disturb his serenity batting here for Middlesex. As some welcome September sun descended on the Home of Cricket, Rogers provided a reminder – if one were needed – that his game remains in fine working order ahead of the return Ashes series.Rogers didn’t play any particularly memorable shots, but then why would he need to? He has a method that works; his brain and body perfectly in sync as he goes about accumulating. But, rather like Justin Langer, Rogers may have the feel of a prodder but often has the strike-rate of a dasher. The 67 he has so far compiled here, off only 111 balls, are another case in point. His quick judgment of length means Rogers is able to score quickly without any discernible effort. With Sam Robson playing with the caution of a man who has not passed 30 in his last eight completed innings, Middlesex’s openers combined to suggest this game will be consigned to a draw. Only when Robson attempted a harum-scarum single did Nottinghamshire look like snaring a wicket. But, as rewarding as Rogers found his day with the bat, his day captaining must have been deeply frustrating. That two quick bowlers – James Harris and Gurjit Sandhu – both went for over 4.5 an over spoke of an attack lacking a little control. For Gareth Berg the problem was more one of luck: his seamers repeatedly passed the edge, including of Patel on several occasions, and he wasn’t flattered by figures of 2 for 78. On the sort of wicket that could be designed with producing a five-day Test in mind, how Middlesex would have benefited from the venom of Steven Finn. The result was that Notts added 269 runs in 60.4 overs – double the rate at which they had scored on the first day. But, for all the big names in their middle order, it was Andre Adams who provided the day’s biggest entertainment.Promoted above Chris Read in a bid to get Nottinghamshire to 350 in time to collect their fourth batting bonus point, Adams promptly backed away to leg and hoiked his first ball over long-on for six. There is no great subtlety to Adams’ batting but his death-or-glory approach was perfectly tailored to his side’s need. Five times the Lord’s boundary was made to look inadequate, until he was snared on the long-off boundary attempting a sixth maximum. But his work had long since been done: Adams had secured the fourth bonus point in the nick of time and, in taking Notts to 430 for 7 declared, to a position of apparent impregnability. After Steven Mullaney had advanced to a technically assured 125 – his second century of the season – Samit Patel and David Hussey both contributed perky knocks. Patel was playing with his customary languid assurance – a couple of straight drives elicited purrs of approval from the members – and it was a matter of considerable surprise when he fell to an outstanding slip catch from Ollie Rayner’s outstretched hand.Hussey had fallen short of his usual exemplary standards this season but made 67 that bristled with intent. It always seems a wonder, given all the travails of the Australian middle-order, that Hussey never earned a Test cap. He did earn 108 international appearances in the two shorter formats, and enjoyed the chance to bat in one-day mode here. By the end of the day, it was another Australia who was to the fore.

Khan Research Labs come out on top in nail-biter

A late charge followed by disciplined bowling fashioned a tight win – the second in two days – for Khan Research Labs, as they beat Sui Northern Gas Pipelines by three runs

ESPNcricinfo staff22-Jul-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsZain Abbas’ took two wickets in an over to go with his 23 off 24 balls to claim the Man-of-the-Match award•PCB

A lower-order charge followed by disciplined bowling fashioned a tight win – the second in two days – for Khan Research Labs, as they beat Sui Northern Gas Pipelines by three runs. Defending 11 off the last over, with Azhar Ali on 57 still at the crease, 19-year-old Usman Khan gave away only eight and claimed a wicket off the final ball to seal the win.Having elected to bat first, KRL’s openers Mohammad Yasin and Zain Abbas took advantage of the field restrictions in the first six overs, hitting seven fours in a solid 40-run partnership. Amid steady progress, the only glitch being Abbas’ wicket in the seventh over, 21-year old medium pacer Bilawal Bhatti tore through KRL’s middle order in the space of three legitimate balls. He bowled a wide in between dismissing Saeed Anwar jr and Mohammad Yasin and then broke Ali Khan’s stumps off the next ball as well to leave KRL at 75 for 4 from 74 for 1 in the 13th over. An unbeaten sixth-wicket partnership of 33 runs in 19 balls between Naved Yasin and Zulfiqar Jan took KRL’s score to 131 in 20 overs, the exact total they made during their Super Over win against Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited.SNGPL’s chase hinged on Azhar Ali, who arrived to the crease after opener Azeem Ghumman fell in the second over. He and captain Taufeeq Umar added 51 runs together, before the latter became the first of two wickets claimed by Zain Abbas in the 11th over. Again SNGPL had to rebuild and Ali forged a 61-run stand with Ali Waqas, comprising six fours and a six. With two set batsmen at the crease and Ali having already completed his fifty, Rahat Ali struck a telling blow removing Waqas in the 19th over. An equation that read 11 off six balls became four off one when Usman Khan had Imran Khalid caught off the last ball.
