Wessels and Hussey shine in victory

Rapid half-centuries by Riki Wessels and David Hussey helped Nottinghamshire maintain their 100% start to the Friends Life t20 campaign

ScorecardRiki Wessels continued his good form with a rapid 70•PA PhotosRapid half-centuries by Riki Wessels and David Hussey helped Nottinghamshire maintain their 100% start to the Friends Life t20 campaign with a 28-run victory over Warwickshire at Edgbaston. The Outlaws piled up 193 for 7 and made it three wins in three outings as Warwickshire sank to their second home defeat in four days. With Darren Pattinson and Luke Fletcher sharing nine wickets, they could only muster 165 despite a valiant 61 from 36 balls by Darren Maddy.Wessels set the tone for the match by pulling two sixes in Neil Carter’s first over and Hussey also cleared the ropes twice as the left-arm seamer finished with 2 for 61 runs, the most expensive return by a Warwickshire bowler in the competition. In his attempts to find a yorker length, the 36-year-old Carter bowled a number of full tosses which were dispatched over the shorter boundary. His main consolation was the wicket of Hussey with a comfortable catch by Maddy at deep point.Hussey made 56 from 31 balls and will go into the next match against Leicestershire at Grace Road on Friday needing seven runs to beat Brad Hodge’s world record total of 3,690 in Twenty20 cricket.Yet if anything Hussey was outshone by Wessels’ performance at the top of the order. Taking his cue from the early bombardment of Carter, he also hit two sixes in an over from Steffan Piolet and faced only 43 balls before he was run out for 70 by Maddy’s return from extra cover.Warwickshire stumbled at the start, crumbling to 36 for 3, but they found some momentum when Jim Troughton put on 54 in six overs with Maddy before Pattinson bowled the Bears captain for 30.Patel became a target for Maddy as the all-rounder smashed three of his five sixes off the offspinner. The other two came off Andy Carter – but the return of Pattinson killed off Warwickshire.Maddy and Keith Barker (20) put up straightforward catches from successive balls and when Pattinson accounted for Piolet and Tim Ambrose in his last over he had taken 5 for 25, the best figures in the competition for Nottinghamshire. Fletcher also picked up two more wickets for a personal-best Twenty20 return of 4 for 30.

Warriors pick up first win by beating Knights

The only result of the weekend came from the contest involving the fifth and last places teams in the SuperSport Series, with the other two fixtures ending in draws. The bottom of the table clash between the Knights and the Warriors finished in three days in Kimberley. The Warriors earned their first win of the competition, but they remain rooted to the bottom of the table. It was uncharacteristically low-scoring match on the usually flat De Beers Diamond Oval. The Knights put up a respectable 301 in their first innings. Rilee Rossouw and Dean Elgar were the rocks on which that total was built. Rossouw scored 122 and Elgar an unbeaten 70, the pair sharing a second-wicket partnership of 157. The rest of the scorecard was the property of Andrew Birch and South Africa seamer Rusty Theron. They took 4 for 68 and 4 for 55 respectively. The Warriors, who have looked inept with the bat all season, continued in that fashion, and were bowled out for 210. Johan van der Wath sliced his way through them with 6 for 66, claiming wickets all through the order. Bevan Bennett was the only batsman to show any fight, top scoring with 41.Birch and Theron were not finished and shared eight wickets between them again in the Knights second innings. Birch claiming a five-for and Theron three for 42 as the Knights were bundle out for 120, setting the Warriors a target of 212 to win. It was an exciting chase, which started with van der Wath capturing Michael Price’s wicket with the score on 11. Jon-Jon Smuts 86 held the innings together, while van der Wath’s 3 for 42 and Victor Mpitsang’s 3 for 38 almost gave the Knights victory. Birch was there at the end with Basheer Walters and the Warriors won by two wickets.Rain had a major say in the Titans clash with the Dolphins in Benoni. The Dolphins opted to bat first in bowler friendly conditions and found themselves in big trouble at 95 for six. Albie Morkel, who ended with five for 73, did the bulk of the early damage. Jon Kent’s 66 and Kyle Abbott’s 80 put them back on the right path. Glen Addicott’s unbeaten 43, batting at No.9 was vital and the Dolphins were bowled out for 301.They were expected to struggle in the field without their ace Imran Tahir, who is on national duty, but bowled the Titans out for 193. Abbott ended with a five-for as none of the Titans batsmen made it over the half-century mark. The Dolphins second innings only just managed to get underway, they had scored one run, a no-ball from Ethy Mbhalati when rain stopped play on day three. There was no play on day four and the spoils were shared. The Titans stay top of the table after the result. The Lions have moved into second place after a high scoring draw against the Cobras in Paarl. The Cobras opted to field first and spent a difficult day chasing the ball. After the Lions were under some pressure at 97 for 3, Neil McKenzie and Zander de Bruyn demoralised the Cobras bowlers with a century apiece. Their fourth wicket partnership of 258 is a new first-class record for that wicket. Claude Henderson’s five for 90 went almost unnoticed as the Lions were bowled out for 458.It was then the Cobras turn to inflict suffering on the Lions bowlers. Owais Shah played his most notable innings since becoming the Cobras overseas professional with 151 and Ryan Canning chipped in with 121. The two innings were almost identical as the Lions spinner, Dale Deeb, took five for 131 and the Cobras were bowled out for 485.The length of time taken meant that only a draw was possible and the Lions reached 113 for two in their second knock. Alviro Petersen, who is under pressure for his Test place was out for 44 and two in the either innings.Bowler of the week: Two national discards made sure they got noticed. Rusty Theron took seven wickets for the Warriors and Albie Morkel an economical five-for for the Titans. Both are bidding for limited overs places but to show their ability in the longer version of the game is never a bad thing.Batsman of the week: Neil McKenzie has been in rock solid form for the Lions all season. He continues to top the run charts with 771 runs and scored his third century this weekend. Perhaps a national recall is on the cards.

15 fun facts about Paul Pogba

Everything you need to know about French superstar Paul Pogba!

Paul Pogba is a French professional football player who currently plays as a central midfielder for Juventus and the France national team. Born on March 15, 1993, in Lagny-sur-Marne, France, Pogba is widely regarded as one of the best midfielders in the world, known for a rare mix of technical ability, range of passing, physicality, ball-winning abilities, and creativity on the pitch.

Pogba began his career at the age of six playing for local club US Roissy-en-Brie. He later joined US Torcy, from where the rough diamond was scouted by Le Havre AC. In 2009, Pogba joined Manchester United's youth academy and quickly made a name for himself as a highly-prodigious talent. He made his first-team debut in 2011 but struggled to establish himself in the squad.

In 2012, Pogba left the northern England club after his contract expired, having only made seven appearances as a substitute. He joined Juventus, who only had to pay £800,000 to secure his services.

At Juventus, he became an integral part of the team, completing a wonderful midfield alongside legends Andrea Pirlo, Arturo Vidal and Claudio Marchisio. He enjoyed a trophy-laden four-year stint with the Italian giants, helping them win four consecutive Serie A titles and the Coppa Italia twice between 2012 and 2016, as well as reaching the UCL final in 2014/15. Pogba was also named the Serie A Footballer of the Year in 2013 and 2014 and was included in the UEFA Team of the Year in 2015.

His performances were so good that Manchester United — the very same club that released him — forked out a then world-record fee of £89 million to prize him away from Turin in 2018. He was 23 and had been named young player of the tournament at the previous World Cup. He was a rising star, the type of player and leader who was expected to pull United out of their post-Alex Ferguson rut.

It all started so positively for Pogba back at Manchester United. In his first season, he played alongside Zlatan Ibrahimovic and helped them win the League Cup and the Europa League, while also moving the Red Devils to a second-place league finish and a return to Champions League action.

However, it all turned sour towards the end of his second stint at United. He has also been criticised for his performances, while some fans and pundits have accused him of not living up to his potential and being inconsistent on and off the pitch.

After another underwhelming season in 2021/22, he left Old Trafford at the end of his contract in the summer of 2022 to rejoin Juventus on a free transfer. He has played just twice for the Italian giants since moving to Turin, with his first season back in Italy largely plagued by various injury problems.

For France, he was one of the driving forces of France's 2018 World Cup win, playing a crucial role in the midfield alongside N'Golo Kante. He was once again a key player for France at Euro 2020 and has made 91 appearances for France, scoring 11 goals but he missed the 2022 World Cup through injury.

Here are 15 fun facts about Pogba you need to know!

  • Nicknamed 'Paul the Octopus' 🌐 🐙

When he played in Italy first time around, Paul got a nickname ‘Il Polpo’ which translates to 'Paul the Octopus'. This is because he has a lanky frame and long legs to control the ball and keep it in possession. His strides and legs are as powerful as an octopus' tentacles.

    Idolises Andrea Pirlo

Paul Pogba has spoken extensively about how much he looks up to and has learned from Andrea Pirlo, an Italy and Juventus legend. Pirlo and Pogba played together during his first stint at Juventus, where Pirlo was an experienced midfielder and Pogba was a rising star. Pogba has often mentioned Pirlo as one of his idols, praising him for his exceptional passing ability, vision, and composure on the ball.

The 30-year-old has even tried to adopt some of the principles of Pirlo's playing style, including his long-range passing and ability to control the tempo of the game. Pogba has also credited Pirlo for helping him become a better player and develop his skills as a midfielder.

In an interview, Pogba said, "I learned a lot from Pirlo. He was an example for me, not just as a player but as a person too. I watched him all the time in training and in matches, trying to learn from him."

  • Raised by a single 'super mum'

Often referred to as 'super mum', Yeo Moriba is recognised for making a number of sacrifices for her children as she raised her three sons single-handedly after she divorced from her husband Fassou Antoine Pogba, in 1996. Yeo brought her three boys alone on France's little council house, and was the driving force behind her three sons' footballing careers.

Pogba has in the past admitted that his mother is his greatest source of inspiration. During an interview with Esquire in 2017, the Frenchman said his mother is his first girlfriend.

Yeo holds a passion for the sport as well, and now serves as an ambassador with the Guinea FA. She even founded a football club in Guinea and used to be the captain of the Guinea women's national team.

Bebe | Vitoria to Manchester United | £7.4m

"On this occasion I didn’t watch him," Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson admitted after signing Bebe. "It is the first time I have done it. Normally I see plenty of video footage but our scouting department is very good and sometimes you have to go on instinct."

In this case, the instinct was definitely wrong as United decided to sign Bebe from Portuguese club Vitoria in 2010 with rumours that Real Madrid and other European clubs were interested.

The attacker had grown up in a homeless shelter after being abandoned by his parents and it was a nice story to see him end up at the Theatre of Dreams.

Bebe made seven appearances in his first season at Old Trafford, scoring in the League Cup and Champions League, but it was clear he still needed plenty of development.

He had loan spells at Besiktas, Rio Ave and Pacos de Ferreira over the next three seasons, but the Red Devils decided to cut their losses and sold the forward to Benfica in 2014, with the player becoming something of a punchline since his departure.

The now-29-year-old is currently plying his trade in the Spanish Segunda Division for Rayo Vallecano but has also played in La Liga for the Madrid club and Eibar.

Danny Drinkwater | Leicester City to Chelsea | £35m

After forming an incredible midfield partnership with N'Golo Kante to help drive Leicester City to the 2015-16 Premier League title, Drinkwater decided it was time to move to a bigger club and joined Chelsea on a five-year deal under Antonio Conte.

But the England international struggled to settle at Stamford Bridge and only made 12 appearances in his first season as he quickly found himself low down in the midfield pecking order behind Kante, Cesc Fabregas and Tiemoue Bakayoko.

The appointment of Maurizio Sarri in 2018-19 failed to change Drinkwater's fortunes at the Blues and his substitute appearance in the Community Shield was his only game time of the season.

The 29-year-old is currently on loan at Burnley but has only made one league start as he battles to establish himself as a starting midfielder again.

Roberto Soldado | Valencia to Tottenham | £26m

Tottenham thought they had secured a coup when they signed Spanish forward Roberto Soldado from Valencia in a club record deal, surpassing the €19.9m paid for Paulinho earlier in the window.

The centre-forward had been a prolific scorer in La Liga, scoring an incredible 24 league goals for Los Che the season before he moved to England.

Soldado had also broken back into the Spain team and scored against Uruguay in the 2013 Confederations Cup just prior to committing his future to Tottenham.

But the striker never found his feet in the Premier League and only managed seven top-flight goals across two seasons in north London before he was allowed to return to La Liga with Villarreal in an €11.7m deal.

Wilfried Bony | Swansea City to Manchester City | £28m

When Manchester City signed Bony from Swansea City in January 2015, he was the Premier League's top scorer in the previous calendar year with 20 goals.

The €29.3m fee paid was, at the time, the most amount of money ever paid for an African footballer and he joined up with City's squad in February after winning the African Nations Cup with Ivory Coast.

Bony became the understudy to the prolific Sergio Aguero and struggled to get into any rhythm while not consistently starting matches.

After scoring six league goals in 36 appearances for City across two campaigns, the striker was loaned to Stoke City. A return to Swansea followed and he dropped into the Championship with his the Welsh side once they were relegated.

Bony is currently without a team after a stint in Qatar last season.

Potter, Arsenal, Klopp and those most impacted by the Premier League's break from football

All football across the UK has been postponed this weekend following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, and many within the game have been impacted

All football matches in the UK were postponed this weekend as a mark of respect following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Sporting authorities were given the option to make a decision whether to play on, and the Football Association, the Premier League and English Football League confirmed on Friday that all matches will be off.

While many questioned the wisdom of the decision, there is no doubt that it will have a knock-on effect for many clubs players and coaches.

Irrespective of the circumstances, there will be some who could gain an advantage from a weekend break, but for others it will be an unfortunate interruption.

GOAL takes a look at those that will have been most affected by the shutdown and why…

(C)Getty imagesGraham Potter

Officially confirmed as the new Chelsea boss on Thursday, Potter was surely eager to get up and running in his new job with a London derby against Fulham.

An extra few days on the training pitch, however, will likely help him settle into his new role, get to know his new squad and introduce some fresh ideas into a side that has lost three of their last five games.

Potter will now start his reign against Red Bull Salzburg in the Champions League, in a game that Chelsea need to win after surprisingly losing their opener to Dinamo Zagreb.

Depending on whether next weekend’s fixtures go ahead, his first Premier League match could also now be at Stamford Bridge and a huge clash with Liverpool, so extra preparations for a key double-header will be beneficial.

AdvertisementGettyArsenal

While a pause could help reset Chelsea’s stuttering form, the opposite is the case for Arsenal, who have made a brilliant start to the season.

Last weekend’s defeat to Manchester United was a setback, but there were still plenty of positives in the way that Mikel Arteta’s side played at Old Trafford, and the early-season leaders will have been desperate to get back to Premier League action to put it right.

It would have been a good time to play Sunday's scheduled visitors Everton, too, with the Toffees not having won all season and were likely to have several key players missing, including goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

And with closest rivals Manchester City and Tottenham facing-off at the Etihad Stadium, it would have been a good opportunity to extend their lead over one or both.

GettyJurgen Klopp

With an injury crisis and defensive issues, a weekend off might help Liverpool after a crazy start to the season.

Liverpool's injury list is one of the longest in the Premier League, but Klopp at least welcomed Thiago Alcantara and Diogo Jota back to his matchday squad in recent days and can give them extra time to be fully fit to start matches soon.

More pressing is a backline that shipped four goals against Napoli, with the reliable Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andy Robertson and Joe Gomez in worrying form.

Klopp questioned his players’ “attitudes” on the opening day of the season and may use this unexpected time off to help spark a revival.

Getty ImagesBrighton

With Potter's departure coming late in the week, it might come as a relief that Brighton have extra time to find a replacement.

An interim management team that included experienced midfielder Adam Lallana were set to take charge for the trip to Bournemouth, but after a remarkable start that has seen them move up to fourth in the Premier League, it would be a frustration to be undercooked for a game that they would hope to take three points from.

Next weekend's game against Crystal Palace has already been postponed because of a rail strike, meaning that the Seagulls have until after the international break to make an appointment before their next game.

Manchester United's greatest-ever transfers in Premier League history

The Red Devils have broken the transfer record a number of times in the last three decades, but which players have been their best signings?

Getty Images1Eric Cantona – 1992 – £1.2 million from Leeds UnitedManchester United started the Premier League era with a couple of marquee signings, bringing in Dion Dublin from Cambridge United and Eric Cantona from Leeds United. Dublin was Alex Ferguson's second-choice in the transfer market, bringing him to Old Trafford after Alan Shearer moved from Southampton to Blackburn Rovers. He scored just two league goals for the Red Devils before leaving for Coventry City in 1994. On the other hand, Cantona was a revelation for the club, reaching double figures in the Premier League in four of his five seasons, picking up four league titles and two FA Cups along the way.AdvertisementGetty2Roy Keane – 1993 – £3.75m from Nottingham ForestRoy Keane became the most expensive player in English football when he joined United as a 21-year-old and was the face and heart of the team for the next 13 seasons. He played 480 times for the Red Devils winning seven league titles as well as the Champions League in 1999. The Republic of Ireland midfielder was the team's captain for their European success, but missed the final due to suspension after picking up a yellow card during a career-best performance against Juventus in the semi-final.Getty Images3Andy Cole – 1995 – £7m from NewcastleAndy Cole was an immediate success at Manchester United after signing in January 1995.
