The Chalkboard: Conor Coady must be given time to recharge

[ad_pod ]

Conor Coady has been one of Wolves’ key players this season. He’s had an extremely impressive first season in the Premier League that’s even had him in the discussion for an England place.

However, Gareth Southgate shut down claims he should be in the side, citing Wolves’ three–at-the-back formation as the reason.

But having played every minute of every Wolves match in the Premier League this season, the sheer number of minutes the captain has clocked up could now be catching up on him.

As such, he and his club should consider dropping him this weekend in order for the 26-year-old to recharge his batteries.

Performance levels dropping

Wolves have been terrific in 2018/19 but in recent weeks, barring a win over Manchester United, have shown signs of slowing down.

It’s understandable given the effort they’ve put in this term. They’ve claimed 13 points from the Premier League’s top six sides, but a defeat to Watford has called some things into question.

Their loss last weekend in the FA Cup semi-final underlined some key problems, no less than their lack of plan B and ineffective substitutions.

But one of their biggest strengths in Coady may now be becoming a weakness too. This isn’t to say that he should be dropped permanently, but with the club now having less to play for he is deserving of a rest.

He was unfortunate to score an own goal against Burnley, but even then his performance wasn’t too great. Against Watford, meanwhile, he was bullied by the presence of Troy Deeney.

What goes under the radar, is that Willy Boly has statistically been better than the man he plays alongside. Coady only makes 0.9 tackles per game, compared to Boly’s 2.3. He’s also down in terms of interceptions and blocks per game compared to his French teammate.

Wolves Fan TV place the blame for Wolves’ FA Cup semi-final collapse on John Ruddy in the video below…

Other candidates at centre half in Romain Saiss and Ryan Bennett also boast better tackling and interception stats.

There is no denying Coady’s influence on the team and it would a huge surprise to see the captain dropped, but given Wolves’ poor form away from home, they should experiment with something different against Southampton.

Celtic: Tierney absence is as big a blow emotionally than anything else

The curse of the international break finds its latest victim in Celtic.

As Neil Lennon’s first Old Firm derby after returning as manager approaches, he’s been struck by the break cruelly. Indeed, Kieran Tierney, one of his biggest assets, had to pull out of Scotland’s Euro 2020 qualifiers due to a niggling hip problem.

While the Scottish felt his absence badly with a shocking drubbing away at Kazakhstan, Celtic fans would be worried something as disastrous isn’t heading their way. Obviously, the Hoops aren’t quite as bad as the Tartan Army, but the Scottish Sun claims he’s a major doubt for the imminent Old Firm.

Obviously, Rangers will come all guns blazing and to keep them out, so Celtic clearly need Tierney’s solidity. Since Lennon’s arrival, Celtic have only conceded one goal in four games and kept three successive clean-sheets at that and Tierney might not have been as clinical attacking-wise as he was under Brendan Rodgers, but his defensive strengths are improving.

He successfully kept Aberdeen’s dangerous Greg Stewart quiet recently, showcasing impressive ability to neutralize their attacking threat. A Celt through and through, potentially missing him for the club’s biggest game left this season, is far from ideal.

Indeed, if Lennon’s side are to keep the menacing duo of James Tavernier and Daniel Candeias quiet, they’ll need Tierney at the top of his game.

The youngster is making strides with Celtic and by knowing the gravity of the derby, he’ll be especially pumped to blow away Rangers. If he’s out, the task has got a lot harder.

Celtic fans, do you think Tierney’s injury issues are a cause for concern? Join the discussion by commenting below.

Liverpool want Celta Vigo hitman Maxi Gomez after Luis Suarez’s recommendation

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool are interested in signing Celta Vigo hitman Maxi Gomez to provide depth in attack, after former Reds striker Luis Suarez sang his fellow countryman’s praises to boss Jurgen Klopp, as reported by The Sun.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the Premier League title hopefuls are particularly light in attack compared to their league rivals, Manchester City.

Where Pep Guardiola has the likes of Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus to choose from, Klopp is perhaps over-reliant on Roberto Firmino with Divock Origi and Daniel Sturridge less fancied up top – the pair have made a combined four league starts this season.

Gomez hit 17 goals in what was his first La Liga campaign last year, and has continued his form with nine goals and five assists so far this term as Celta Vigo battle to avoid relegation.

The ruthlessness that Liverpool are missing

Standing at 6′ 1″, 22-year-old Gomez is a real powerhouse thanks to his height and stocky physique, although he is not just a towering lump as he possesses great technical skills.

Suarez has given a glowing recommendation of his fellow Uruguayan for a reason, and with Chelsea and West Ham also lurking, the Reds should try hard to get this deal done.

Firmino has been less of an out-and-out striker this season and more of a No.10, so the Merseysiders lack a real frontman to aim for at times.

Football is a squad game, and it doesn’t take a genius to see that Liverpool lack City’s depth.

Klopp has been fairly lucky with injuries so far this season, hence his side’s lofty position in the table, but if one of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane or Firmino are hit with a serious problem, their ambitions will be dealt a severe blow with no one in reserve capable of matching their impact on the pitch.

For the reported price tag of £35m too, a move for Gomez should be a no-brainer.

The youngster can play in both full-back positions as well as in midfield.

Man Utd player ratings vs Newcastle: Casemiro is a big-game baller! Brazil star leads Red Devils to Carabao Cup glory

The Red Devils ran out 2-0 winners at Wembley as Erik ten Hag secured his first silverware in English football with a victory over Eddie Howe's side

A Casemiro-inspired Manchester United ended their near six-year long wait for a trophy, beating Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday.

After an even, slightly untidy start where chances were at a premium, United blew the game wide open with two quickfire goals in just six first-half minutes.

The exceptional Casemiro grabbed the opener, nodding Luke Shaw's free kick past Loris Karius. And six minutes later, Marcus Rashford burst free of the Magpies' defence and fired on goal, with an unfortunate deflection off Sven Botman taking the ball into the net.

United didn't have it all their own way after the break as, buoyed by a rampant travelling support, Newcastle dialed up the pressure. In truth though, there was never much danger of them letting their lead slip as they clinched the first major silverware of the Erik ten Hag era.

GOAL rates Man Utd's players from Wembley…

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    David de Gea (7/10):

His strong hand denied Saint-Maximin in the first half. Seemed pretty confident collecting high balls and sweeping up behind his defence.

    Diogo Dalot (4/10):

Early, and largely unnecessary booking, had him walking a tightrope. Saint-Maximin regularly had the beating of Dalot in all honesty, and it was little surprise to see him hooked at half-time.

    Lisandro Martinez (7/10):

Made a huge block to deny Bruno Guimaraes when Newcastle were piling on the pressure in the second half. What a superb piece of business.

    Raphael Varane (7/10):

Passing wasn't perfect, but very little wrong with his defending.

    Luke Shaw (7/10):

Absolutely delicious ball led to the opener. He also chipped in with some vital interceptions, showcasing his astute reading of the game.

    Midfield

    Casemiro (8/10):

Guided his header into the corner superbly to open the scoring. Barely did anything wrong – worth every penny United spent on him.

    Fred (6/10):

A nice foil for his compatriot. Typically full of energy, but was overly enthusiastic in his tackles on occasion. Taken off while on a booking.

    Bruno Fernandes (5/10):

Worked really hard off the ball but wasn't particularly creative. Not much he tried came off and made a hash of two, potentially game-ending passes late on, before squandering a chance to make it three himself.

    Attack

    Antony (6/10):

Rarely gave the ball away in the final third. Nothing too magical, though he did wind up his opponents.

    Wout Weghorst (7/10):

Ran the channels like an animal all game. Denied by a wonderful Karius save just before the break and completed a nice lay-off just before the second goal.

    Marcus Rashford (7/10):

United were looking to release him at every opportunity and he eventually forced a goal when his shot deflected off Botman and over Karius. His astounding recent form continues.

    Subs & Manager

    Aaron Wan-Bissaka (7/10):

Solid after replacing Dalot. Will be interesting to see if he can become first choice after improving so drastically under Ten Hag.

    Marcel Sabitzer (6/10):

Kept the pressure on Newcastle as they searched for an equaliser.

    Scott McTominay (6/10):

His height was helpful in the penalty box.

    Jadon Sancho (N/A):

Not enough time to make an impact.

    Harry Maguire (N/A):

Nice of Ten Hag to give his captain a run out in the closing stages.

    Erik ten Hag (9/10):

Told his side to release Rashford early in the first half – to decent effect. Smartly removed any players on a booking from the fray. The first United manager to lift a trophy since Jose Mourinho.
