England mull over Dawson debut

Liam Dawson, the Hampshire slow left-armer, could make his international debut against Afghanistan on Wednesday

Andrew Miller22-Mar-2016Liam Dawson, the Hampshire slow left-armer, could make his international debut against Afghanistan on Wednesday after Eoin Morgan admitted England were considering the option of three spinners in a vital Group 1 clash in DelhiEngland would take a significant stride towards the World T20 semi-finals if they avoid an upset on Wednesday. Their frontline spin pairing, Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid, have demonstrated their value in the tournament so far, and Morgan said that any decision over the make-up of the team would be deferred until the management had had a good final look at the wicket.”I expected a dryer pitch,” Morgan admitted. “There’s still a lot of grass on it but I don’t know what it’s going to do. We’ll have to leave it as late as possible to select the side, and see what conditions are going to be like. If it’s another hot day like today, [the groundsman] might leave grass on it rather than take it off.”Since we’ve arrive here we’ve had one net session in the nets and they have turned a considerable amount, but I don’t think it will turn as much. We can be as open minded as we can, we can talk about it and we can use other players and our backroom staff as a sounding board.”A pump-action shotgun

Eoin Morgan likened Afghanistan’s threat to that of a “pump-action shotgun” as he braced his side for a severe test of their mettle against an Associate team, like Ireland in Morgan’s own early days of international cricket, that would not be afraid to lose.
“[Victory] will be their ultimate objective,” he said. “It’s a bit like a pump-action shotgun. You can keep loading as long as you like. If you keep missing, it’s fine. But the opportunity along the way will come. And if you have your day, you might win a game. That’s certainly the attitude when I was a part of Ireland
England lost their last World T20 outing against an Associate team, against Netherlands at Chittagong in 2014. But Morgan insisted that the circumstances could not be different two years on.
“We were already out of the tournament,” he said. “We probably came into the game with a completely wrong mindset. We were flying directly after the game, had already packed our bags to leave. In my mind I was already at home sitting on the couch.”

If Dawson did play, it would be quite a turnaround for a player who spent part of last season loaned by Hampshire to Essex to rediscover his form. He achieved that so markedly that he won a call up to the England Lions in the UAE where he impressed the coach, Andy Flower, not just for his spin bowling but his ability to hit a long ball.Dawson was nevertheless a surprise selection for England’s 15-man squad, after beating Stephen Parry to the third spinner’s role on account of his greater allround versatility. Morgan expressed absolute faith in his ability to front up on an important occasion, and stressed that Joe Root, who bowled briefly in the victory over South Africa, was not being considered as a front-line option.”Rooty can be a viable option for a third spinner, but Liam Dawson adds a lot more with the ball than Joe would, and he would come into consideration if the grass comes off the pitch,” Morgan said.”Is he ready? Yeah, absolutely. He’s trained really hard since he’s come into the side and has been great around the group. He’s really upbeat and, like everybody, he’s really keen to get involved.”England’s recent record against Associate nations at the World T20 leaves plenty to be desired, with defeats to the Netherlands in 2009 and 2014 staining their overall record. But Morgan said that England would be going into the Afghanistan game with their eyes wide open, and with their thoughts trained solely on victory.”They’re a dangerous side,” he said. “They have played a really exciting brand of cricket. Ten years ago we might not have known much about them, but now that is the nature of modern sport. We know a lot about them and that is quite comforting – the fact that there’s no stone that’s left unturned.”We watched the early stages of the tournament and they played some really good cricket. We watched both games, against Sri Lanka and South Africa in different circumstances, and it’s been nice for us to see what they’re about as a side.”Afghanistan’s reputation for maverick tendencies is best expressed in the wild batting of Mohammad Shahzad, whose 44 from 19 balls was the highlight of their run-chase against South Africa. But Morgan said that they would be wary of all of their opponents, and not merely the man at the top of the order who has captured the recent headlines.”I think he is a good batsman but I think it would be rude of me to single out any one of their players,” he said. “I think as a side they can be quite strong and destructive.”If we target one player in particular, it can give an opportunity to another player to come out and have their own day, so it is important we treat each player as we do Shahzad.”I wouldn’t say it is nervy to have a bit of unpredictability there, but I would say in any T20 game up against any team then unpredictability can be a strong point. We have lacked consistency as a T20 side in recent times and there is an element of that to our game.”With Sri Lanka looming as England’s final contest of a potentially tight group, the prospect of net run rate could yet come into play as a deciding factor in which team goes through to the knock-outs. But Morgan dismissed any such thoughts from his mind, insisting that victory was England’s sole focus, no matter how fast or slow their route.”Our priority is on winning. Tomorrow is a big game and we are certainly not taking Afghanistan for granted, so first and foremost we need to go into that game with the right mindset,” he said.”I think focusing on anything else at the moment, given that there is two group games left, would be a little bit naïve, actually stupid, so tomorrow is very important and getting a win under our belt is key.”

Northants wrap up first win since 2013

Northamptonshire ended a run of 20 Championship matches without a win by beating Leicestershire by 92 runs at Grace Road

Resuming on 44-1 in pursuit of 376 to win, Leicestershire lost three wickets in the first hour of play and, on a pitch that continued to offer occasional assistance to the seamers, never genuinely threatened to get close to their target.Angus Robson, 25 overnight, had added only seven to his score when his off stump was knocked out of the ground by an Azharullah delivery that straightened off the seam. Captain Mark Cosgrove was then given out leg before wicket for 2 to Olly Stone, a decision that surprised the left-handed batsman, who may have thought the ball was going over the stumps. There were no such doubts about the decision to send Neil Pinner on his way, however, Azharullah switching ends to trap the batsman plumb in front for 12, leaving Leicestershire on 93 for 4.Ned Eckersley and Niall O’Brien put together a partnership of 59 for the fifth wicket, but Northants struck again before lunch, Rory Kleinveldt ending Eckersley’s 111 ball innings of 37 with an in-swinger that won another leg before decision.Tom Wells became the fourth lbw victim of the day when he was beaten by Kleinveldt’s inswinger, but Niall O’Brien played with characteristic fluency in going to his half-century, hitting eight fours before inside-edging a Kleinveldt delivery into his stumps.Ben Raine went quickly, caught behind driving at Azharullah, but Leicestershire’s newly arrived overseas player Clint McKay hit out to good effect, as he had in the first innings, before top edging a hook into the hands of deep backward square leg. Ollie Freckingham and Charlie Shreck ensured Leicestershire’s defeat would be by less than 100 before Shreck went caught behind off Kleinveldt.Despite their victory, Northamptonshire were deducted two points for a slow over rate.Leicestershire coach, Andrew McDonald, said: “There were a lot of positives, but there were some crucial periods when we didn’t quite execute well. You look at a hundred-run deficit and you can probably find more than that where we could have been better.”Each day you learn about the players, and if we improve from here we’ll hold ourselves in good stead. We took 20 wickets, and created more than 20 opportunities, and that’s a real positive when last year we averaged 13 wickets a game.”

Muralitharan named Sunrisers bowling coach

Former Sri Lanka offspinner Muttiah Muralitharan has been named Sunrisers Hyderabad’s bowling coach and team mentor for the Indian Premier League 2015 season.Muralitharan, 42, played 66 IPL games across seven seasons for Chennai Super Kings, Kochi Tuskers Kerala and Royal Challengers Bangalore, taking 63 wickets at an average of 26.92. He continued playing franchise cricket for a number of teams across the world including Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League, and Jamaica Tallawahs in the Caribbean Premier League. After a disappointing season with Royal Challengers in 2014 in which he played only five matches, Muralitharan decided to end his playing career. In June last year, Muralitharan joined Australia as a coaching consultant ahead of the team’s series against Pakistan in the UAE.Sunrisers finished sixth last year and missed out on the playoffs, having lost eight of their 14 games.

Bangladesh started their West Indies tour on a positive note with a 95-run victory over Grenada in the only practice game before the ODI series.Choosing to bat, Bangladeshis posted 322 for 6. Tamim Iqbal led the way, making an 86-ball 91 that included 12 fours and two sixes. Tamim was involved in two substantial stands – a 56-run partnership with Anamul Haque at the start, followed by a brisk 88 for the third wicket with Shamsur Rahman. There were useful contributions from most of the batsmen, except Imrul Kayes who fell for 1. The pair of Mahmudullah and Nasir Hossain gave the side a strong finish with a 101-run stand that came in just 50 balls.Grenada’s steep chase hit a hurdle early on when Sohag Gazi dismissed Devon Smith in the second over. Keone George tried to anchor the chase with an 89-ball 62, but his dismissal set off a slide that saw Grenada lose five wickets for nine runs and stumble to 186 for 9. The last-wicket pair of Denis George and Preston McSween added 41 to help the side reach 227 for 9. Mashrafe Mortaza picked up the most wickets for Bangladeshis with 3 for 44, while Abdur Razzak and Al-Amin Hossain picked up two wickets apiece.

Nepal hungry to reach the big league

Nepal captain Paras Khadka has said his team is hungry to compete against Full Member nations, as they prepare for the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier in the UAE

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Nov-2013Nepal captain Paras Khadka has said his team is hungry to compete against Full Member nations, as they prepare for the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier in the UAE and aim to seal their passage to the 2014 World Twenty20 in Bangladesh.Nepal is in Group B, along with Afghanistan, Netherlands, Scotland, Kenya, Bermuda, Denmark and Papua New Guinea. Khadka said his team had been focusing on fitness and skills in the lead-up to the competition, which begins on November 15.”The boys have been working really hard for the last two months. We’ve also toured India, with a trip to Delhi for some practice games and that has helped the team gain some momentum ahead of the tournament,” Khadka said. “Some of the newer players have come through our U-19 set-up, as well as the U-23 set-up. We have a balanced set-up, especially when it comes to our fast bowlers and spin bowlers. We have a couple of allrounders followed by a strong batting line-up, we’ve got it all there.”Nepal has not yet made it to a World Cup or World Twenty20 and Khadka said his team would strive to be able to play against the major teams. “It means everything to us, we want to be there as we have worked very hard to be here. We are hungry to get to the top and compete against the Full Members in the pinnacle of Twenty20 cricket.”All the teams must have prepared really well so we cannot take any team lightly. Everyone wants to make it to the World Twenty20 so it will be really competitive, but we’re ready for the challenge and we are looking forward to playing positively and concentrating on our strong points.”Nepal’s first game is against Denmark on November 15.Nepal: Paras Khadka (capt), Pradeep Airee, Binod Bhandari, Amrit Bhattarai, Mahesh Chhetri, Shakti Gauchan, Subash Khakurel, Avinash Karn, Gyanendra Malla, Anil Mandal, Jitendra Mukhiya, Sagar Pun, Basant Regmi, Sharad Vesawkar, Rahul Vishwakarma

Misbah calls for Pakistan's T20 league

Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq has suggested the idea of having a franchise-based Twenty20 league in Pakistan to groom young talent in the absence of any international cricket. On his return from West Indies after featuring in the Caribbean Premier League for St Lucia Zouks, Misbah stated that a T20 league would help youngsters as it would give them an opportunity to play with international cricketers. “Though PCB is doing its effort to bring international cricket back [to Pakistan], in my opinion, we also should have our own [T20] league,” he told reporters in Lahore. “It is necessary to have it either in Pakistan or in Dubai as it will allow our youngsters to play with international stars.”Our players are not properly groomed because of no international cricket, and other countries get their young players groomed by having leagues where they get a chance to play with international stars. India is the biggest example where they are holding the league and getting their players well groomed.”Pakistan have been deprived of international cricket since a terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan team bus in Lahore in March 2009. Since then, Pakistan have mostly been playing their home series in the UAE. Bilateral series for the youth teams, A team and academy level are on hold, which hinders the development of upcoming players.During Zaka Ashraf’s regime, the PCB was desperate to bring international cricket back to the country, but failed to convince any team to tour Pakistan. The board then launched a franchise-based Twenty20 tournament called Pakistan Super League, but it had to be postponed indefinitely due to logistical issues. Before 2009, Pakistan used to organise reciprocal tours around the world at all levels, apart from national bilateral series, but the practice has been put on hold as junior teams are also reluctant to visit Pakistan due to security issues. Though the board has managed to host international teams outside Pakistan, it has failed to afford a similar series for junior teams due to the lack of sponsors.Pakistani players featured in the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League but have been ignored since relations between the two countries took a dive in the wake of the Mumbai terrorist attacks in 2008. Pakistan’s domestic T20 teams had also been ignored for the Champions League T20 until 2012.
