Liverpool Eyeing £34m "Mountain" Alongside Lavia

Liverpool are still interested in signing Torino defender Perr Schuurs and appear to have held talks over a potential move.

What’s the latest Liverpool transfer news?

Preparations are being made at Anfield ahead of the 2023/24 Premier League campaign, with two new midfielders already brought in for Jurgen Klopp.

Deals for Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai have been completed, with the pair signing from Brighton and RB Leipzig respectively at a combined cost of €112m (£96m).

However, there have been more midfielders leave Merseyside than arrive. James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita all left on free transfers when their contracts expired and Jordan Henderson has now departed to join Steven Gerrard in Saudi Arabia.

Fabinho could be the next to move on, which has led to Liverpool looking at a move for another midfielder in Southampton’s Romeo Lavia. An opening £40m offer has been turned down by the Saints, however, it is “increasingly likely that a compromise will be reached”, according to James Pearce, with anew bidbeing prepared.

Alongside Lavia, it appears as if the Reds, and by extension owners FSG and sporting director Jorg Schmadtke, also have their eyes on signing a new defender before the September 1 deadline.

Schuurs has been linked with a move to Merseyside, with speculation first emerging back in 2020, and the player is reportedly happy to join the Reds, with more news emerging in the last 48 hours.

Sport Witness relayed an update from Toro.it regarding Schuurs. Liverpool and Crystal Palace were named with an interest in the defender, however, negotiations have frozen due to Torino’s €40m (£34m) asking price, implying that talks have been held between the Italian side and those at Anfield.

The two Premier League sides don’t plan to give up on a potential deal, though, with Klopp identifying Schuurs to possibly play alongside fellow countryman Virgil van Dijk going forward.

Who is Perr Schuurs?

Schuurs is 23 years of age and is an out-and-out centre-back who is sponsored by Nike. He began his career in Fortuna Sittard’s academy before moving to Ajax in 2018. Schuurs made 95 senior appearances for the Eredivisie giants before going on to sign for Torino last summer.

Since then, the defender has been a regular in Italy, turning out on 33 occasions during the previous campaign, averaging more tackles and clearance per 90 than any of his teammates, as per WhoScored.

Journalist Josh Bunting described Schuurs as a “mountain" last year, and it looks as if he is at the peak of his powers with a career-high €25m Transfermarkt valuation.

Klopp currently has five senior centre-back options to choose from in Van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and Nathaniel Phillips, although the latter of the five has been linked with an exit.

Therefore, should one or two centre-backs leave Merseyside over the coming weeks, Schuurs could be viewed as a solid replacement, and it appears as if a deal could be one to keep an eye on over the coming weeks.

Players considering striking since January – Taylor

Australia’s players have been considering the possibility of strike action since as early as January, according to the former Test captain and Cricket Australia board director Mark Taylor

Daniel Brettig14-May-2017Australia’s players have been considering the possibility of strike action since as early as January, according to the former Test captain and Cricket Australia board director Mark Taylor. As the Australian Cricketers’ Association responded to the threat of CA’s chief executive James Sutherland that the players will cease to be paid after June 30 unless the ACA agrees to the board’s current pay offer, Taylor revealed the depth of the players’ feeling while describing his frustration at the lack of any constructive negotiation.Following ESPNcricinfo’s report on Sutherland’s letter, numerous Australian players, including Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Aaron Finch, took to Twitter to maintain their strong support for the ACA, using the #fairshare hashtag. Starc wrote the dispute “makes for an interesting men’s and women’s Ashes”, while the former England batsman Kevin Pietersen wrote “Fairly big player strike soon in Aus…””The board and CA in general have been frustrated by the fact there has been no negotiation. I had players say to me in January of this year ‘we could well be on strike by July’. This is before this MOU was presented,” Taylor, who was captain of the national team when the first MOU was struck in 1998, said on Channel Nine.”I’m not surprised James has done what he’s done. Things haven’t been going anywhere for months now, and I know Cricket Australia feel the ACA aren’t negotiating at all. CA want to change the MOU, want to get away from the revenue sharing model, although the deal being offered to the players is still revenue sharing to a certain extent. No-one’s worse off, women are going to be very well paid in the new model.”But right from the word go, the ACA – I’m not so sure about the players – have not wanted to engage at all on this deal that’s been offered. It’s all about status quo or the highway, and I don’t think you can negotiate that way.”Taylor said CA was intent on breaking up the fixed revenue percentage model because the board did not think it was sustainable. “It doesn’t make business sense for Cricket Australia,” he said. “Every time you make money you have to give away a certain percentage of it. The costs of revenue are going up in sport all the time, every sport will say that.”This could be a win-win. Both side have to negotiate, Cricket Australia has said right from the word go there is our deal. There has been no discussion, or any negotiation on the detail of that deal. The deal they want is status quo.”Alistair Nicholson, the ACA chief executive, criticised what he called CA’s attempt to “drive a wedge in Australian cricket” and reiterated the association’s call for independent mediation of pay talks.”Clearly, we are disappointed that CA are threatening the players,” Nicholson said. “It’s also a window into the nature of CA’s behaviour in these negotiations so far. There is incoherence and aggression in what we have experienced at the negotiating table from CA. This has further been demonstrated this week with some top players being offered multi-years deals one day only to now be threatened the next.”However, despite these threats, the players affirm their offer to participate in independent mediation. Quite simply, one side entered these negotiations in good faith with an intent to provide a win/win result, and the other is trying to remove player unity and drive a wedge in Australian cricket. Further lighting the fuse on this dispute on the eve of the Ashes and during discussions with potential broadcasters and sponsors is quite baffling.”The point lost on CA is that the players will not respond to threats, whilst broadcasters and sponsors need certainty. That’s why we state again, for the good of the game, that it is time to sit down in mediation rather than make unnecessary threats and create such uncertainty.”

Sky Sports Share Positive Man United Transfer News

Manchester United’s summer transfer plans won’t be affected by the ongoing takeover saga, Sky Sports report.

What’s the latest Man United news?

The Glazers are still yet to make a concrete decision when it comes to a potential Old Trafford sale, with Sheikh Jassim and Sir Jim Ratcliffe still waiting to see if their bids have been successful.

The Red Devils and Erik ten Hag are also yet to bolster the squad with any new signings, and there has been previous speculation that there are concerns from Old Trafford that the takeover process could derail Ten Hag’s summer plans.

Sky Sports shared an update from Old Trafford regarding the takeover saga, claiming that the Glazers are still considering offers from Jassim and Ratcliffe. However, they have learned that the club’s transfer plans “won’t be affected” as there is “enough cash available” currently to bolster Ten Hag’s squad, within FFP rules, in what is a positive transfer update.

“The Glazer family are still considering bids from Sheikh Jassim and Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

“According to sources close to United, summer recruitment won’t be affected by the results, with enough cash available to enable United boss Erik ten Hag to invest in the team, although Financial Fair Play rules will limit what can be spent.”

Who could Man United sign this summer?

There could be plenty of incomings and outgoings, with up to 13 players reportedly up for sale at United this summer. Should a number of players move on, that could increase the funds available to Ten Hag.

A key target in recent weeks has been Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount, with the Red Devils making a number of offers, with a £55m bid still on the table.

Alongside a new midfielder, a new goalkeeper could also be on the cards, with David de Gea’s future still up in the air with his contract set to expire at the end of the month. Inter Milan’s Andre Onana looks to be the key target to potentially come in as first choice for De Gea, with a bid being readied in Manchester.

Should a couple of high-profile additions come in over the next few weeks such as Mount and Onana, it may relieve some stress for Ten Hag with pre-season just around the corner, and by the looks of it, nothing is stopping that from happening, so supporters will be hoping to see some activity over the coming weeks.

Tottenham: Ange Bids For "Special" £35m-rated Dynamo

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly made a move to sign a Premier League-proven talent…

What's the latest on Harvey Barnes to Tottenham Hotspur?

That's according to the Daily Mail, who report that Spurs had lodged a £50m double bid for both James Maddison and Harvey Barnes.

It is a move that has been met with widespread ridicule, as Lilywhites chairman Daniel Levy continues to short-change his rivals. However, Ange Postecoglou will likely not be as amused, as he seeks to make his first signing since being appointed earlier this month.

Although it is set to be rejected, it does mark a statement of intent from the Lilywhites, who are setting out their plans for the coming transfer window.

However, to tempt only the £35m-rated wide man, they will certainly have to up their price. Leicester City were commanding a fee of £50m for the 25-year-old alone last summer.

Would Harvey Barnes improve Tottenham Hotspur?

As a left winger, his acquisition by Spurs would immediately put Heung-min Son's place in the side under fire, especially after the torrid term the South Korean has just endured, in which his stock plummeted.

The 30-year-old star would score just ten league goals, marking a miserable downturn from the 23 he notched the season prior, and even the 17 the year before that.

Although the north London outfit suffered a poor season themselves, it did not excuse the anonymity of their usually ever-reliable goal machine. This left the attacking burden solely on Harry Kane, who still mustered 30 goals to emphasise this gulf in class.

However, frustratingly for Antonio Conte, Cristian Stellini and eventually Ryan Mason, a lack of viable alternatives meant the former Bayer Leverkusen dynamo still featured in 36 out of their 38 Premier League games.

He could not be dropped to emphasise his unacceptable form, and so he trundled on with his levels below average.

To sign Barnes would give the struggling South Korean some ample competition at last, especially seen as the one-time England international outscored him in a Foxes side that eventually fell to relegation.

His 13 strikes in the most recent Premier League campaign marked a goalscoring career-best for the England gem, who has previously been lauded as a "huge talent" and a truly "special" footballer by journalist Adam Bate in the past.

With sheer pace and a thunderous right foot akin to Son, but at five years his junior, this could be a signing both for the near future and to reignite their once dependable finisher in the present.

heung-min-son-tottenham-hotspur

After all, at the time when pundit Noel Whelan suggested his pairing with Kane was "the best partnership in world football", he was battling for his spot with a more spirited Lucas Moura, Dejan Kulusevski on top form, and Steven Bergwijn.

Barnes could arguably surpass all three of those options, to either usurp Son or spur him back to his brilliant best.

Williamson keen on following attacking blueprint

Kane Williamson wants New Zealand to return to an attacking blueprint for the home Tests against Pakistan

Andrew Fidel Fernando in Christchurch16-Nov-20161:35

‘Pakistan have shown they can adapt anywhere’ – Williamson

The pitch is a vivid green, and the forecast is for rain, but bury caution, Kane Williamson said; “freedom” is his call to action with the bat.The reasoning is simple: it is what has worked for New Zealand at home, in the past. Thrashed in India, and beaten in South Africa, the hosts now seek to regain the dominance they had had at home, between 2013 and 2015. That attacking blueprint, Williamson said, is what New Zealand must return to.”It’s important when you come off the back of that Indian tour, that you come here and play with some freedom, and express our skills,” he said. “When we do that we play our best cricket. That’s our challenge going into this big home summer. There’s always pressure in international sport, but it’s important that we deal with that and play with freedom without trying too hard.”New Zealand’s most recent home Test had also been at Hagley Oval, and Williamson drew lessons from Brendon McCullum’s first innings from that game. Having come to the crease at 32 for 3 on the first morning, McCullum cut loose in memorable style, crashing 21 boundaries, walloping six sixes, hitting 145 from 79 balls, and breaking the record for fastest Test hundred in the process.”If you look at the last Test here, for example, when we lost the toss on a tough surface which did quite a bit, we saw an innings from Brendon McCullum which was in total contrast to my innings. I took the approach of trying to play late and attack when I thought there was a ball in my area. I got seven off almost 70 deliveries. Brendon was the complete opposite. It was an example of someone playing with complete freedom. I think that can come with the confidence of knowing your own conditions.”Kane Williamson on Tom Latham: ‘Tom has been around a long time in the New Zealand set up. For a while he has been considered a leader in this side’•BCCIAmong the batsmen Williamson expects to carry the flag is opener Tom Latham, who was among the better New Zealand batsmen in India, hitting a fifty in each Test. Though only 24, Latham is now the senior partner in the opening combination, following the axing of Martin Guptill. He has played 25 Tests and so far managed an average of 38.”Tom has been around a long time in the New Zealand set up. For a while he has been considered a leader in this side. He has been performing very well. He’s a strong leader within the group, and maybe he’ll take on that little bit of extra responsibility – not just with opening the batting, but also to play with that freedom.”Opening alongside him will be 28-year-old Auckland batsman Jeet Raval, who will make his debut in this Test. Raval had made a steady start to his domestic season when he was called into the Test side, and Williamson described him as a consummate builder of innings.”Jeet has been a consistent performer for a long time, and he knows how to score runs. I guess he’s a guy that can bat a long period of time. In some ways there are similarities between the two openers. Both are quite headstrong. Both will be challenged in this series by a very good seam-bowling attack.”Whenever you make your debut there’s some unknowns, not having experienced the step up in international cricket. Naturally, there are some nerves there. We’ve chatted. It’s a matter of not changing too much – he has been successful with what he has done. It’s a matter of applying a simple game plan – all those sorts of things that he has been doing well, and earned him his selection.”Though he expected his own team to make good use of home conditions, Williamson remained wary of Pakistan, and their good away record.”Home advantage is a good thing, I think, but it provides opportunities for both sides, and a side like Pakistan who have toured well for a while now will know that. They’ll expect their seamers to do well. It’s about making those adjustments of length, as you come away from the subcontinent and on to our surfaces.”

Phil Hay Drops Exciting Leeds Transfer Update

Leeds United should have plenty of money to spend this summer under the control of 49ers Enterprises, according to reliable journalist Phil Hay.

Is Leeds' takeover complete?

The Whites experienced a season to forget in the Premier League, suffering relegation back down to the Championship, following failed spells under Jesse Marsch, Javi Gracia and Sam Allardyce.

All of a sudden, however, Leeds have received some much-needed good news, with the club confirming on Friday that an agreement has been reached between Aser Ventures and 49ers Enterprises over the purchase of the Whites.

It is a big moment in the club's recent history, with this new takeover expected to be hugely beneficial financially, allowing Leeds to become more of a force on and off the pitch in the coming years.

While relegation is clearly a blow – especially as it could have meant fewer funds being available for reinforcements – a new update has allayed those fears.

How will Leeds' summer spending be affected?

According to The Athletic's Hay, Leeds' current situation is a positive one, with this new injection of money likely to aid them in the summer transfer window:

"Parachute payments in year one in the Championship are worth around £45million to Leeds.

"Those sources of income will still be used by 49ers Enterprises but this takeover is expected to lead to an injection of working capital by the U.S. fund, allowing Leeds to have a more active or aggressive window than they might otherwise have had.

"That is not to say that spending will be lavish or wildly excessive, and don’t be surprised if the club make use of the loan market, but they should be better placed to recruit and sell, and the takeover should give them more chance of retaining certain key players."

This is great news for Leeds, who could have been damaged so badly by the exit from the Premier League, and it highlights how important the takeover of the club is.

It puts the Whites in a strong position when it comes to making a rapid return to the top flight over the next 12 months, suggesting that their next manager will be backed in the transfer market and that they should start the 2023/24 season as one of the favourites to get out of the Championship.

There have clearly been good times with the outgoing owners – not least hiring Marcelo Bielsa and getting back into the Premier League. But it is perhaps time for a change, and it has come at a pivotal point in the club's recent history.

Essex slump after Kent secure second

ScorecardDan Lawrence made 88 but Essex were still short of the follow-on target at the close•PA Photos

Essex will require three runs with only one wicket in hand to avoid the follow on after reaching stumps on day three in Canterbury on 289 for 9. Responding to Kent’s 441 all out, Essex lost wickets at regular intervals in this Specsavers Championship top-of-the-table clash, but a last-wicket stand worth 22 between David Masters and Matt Dixon has at least given the visitors a chance to avoid batting again on the final day of the campaign.Batting for the first time by 11.35am on day three, Essex lost two wickets in the short 15-over spell through to lunch as Kent maintained their grip on events despite a plucky knock from No. 4 Dan Lawrence, who rode his luck to score 88 having edged through the cordon when on 5 only to see Will Gidman down a chance at third slip on the same score. The visitors and second division champions elect, lost Varun Chopra, lbw for 25 to Kent’s man-of-the-moment, Darren Stevens, then Tom Westley, caught at square leg by Sean Dickson off the bowling of Mitch Claydon in the over before the interval.Kent maintained a check on the run rate in the afternoon session and also collected a further three wickets in the process as Nick Browne, Ravi Bopara and Adam Wheater all trooped back to the pavilion. Browne edged the 12th ball after the resumption to Sam Billings off Claydon then Bopara, digging down late on a full ball from Hardus Viljoen, also nicked through to the Kent keeper. Just before tea Wheater’s miscued pull against Matt Coles flew to deep square leg where Dickson took a comfortable catch.Viljoen continued to shine after tea by having Kishen Velani and Will Rhodes both caught at second slip by James Tredwell off successive overs. With 27 needed to avoid the follow-on and just 12 short of his fourth Championship hundred of the summer, Lawrence inexplicably holed out to long-on against the offspin of Tredwell. Masters, in his farewell appearance for Essex, was given a guard of honour by the Kent side as he walked to the middle, but Tredwell soon struck again by ripping an arm ball though Paul Walter’s defensive gate to peg back the left-hander’s off stump to leave Essex nine down.At the start of the day Kent had secured the second division runners-up spot upon reaching 400. Resuming on their overnight score of 387 for 7, the hosts motored past 400 with a fearsome back-foot cut by Coles that registered a fifth batting bonus point to clinch the ECB’s prize money cheque of almost £57,000 for finishing second behind Essex. In trying to repeat the stroke in the next over Coles nicked to Wheater to depart for 32 and give Masters, the former Kent seamer, his first wicket in the match. Masters struck again with a lifter that Viljoen could only glove to third slip then Stevens, on 136 and just four short of equalling his season’s best, clipped to deep backward square to give Dixon figures of 5 for 124.

Rangers And Beale Set To Sign 23 y/o For £0

Glasgow Rangers are reportedly close to another new signing, with Michael Beale set to bring Chelsea defender Dujon Sterling to Ibrox.

What’s the latest Rangers transfer news involving Sterling?

Sterling is set to become a free agent this summer when his Stamford Bridge contract expires. He has previously been out on loan with Coventry City, Blackpool and Wigan Athletic during his career, with his latest temporary spell coming with Stoke City.

There were recent reports that Beale was looking to hijack Stoke’s permanent move for the 23-year-old and knows the player from his time as a youth coach at Chelsea, and a major update has now emerged, with the manager on course to get his wish.

According to The Evening Standard, Chelsea have given the green light for Sterling to move to Rangers on a long-term contract. The report states that he is expected to sign a deal in the coming weeks, subject to completing a medical and final contractual details being rubber-stamped.

The Athletic’s Adam Leventhal has since added that a deal has been agreed in principle between player and club.

Summer shake-up well underway…

Beale doesn’t appear to be messing around when it comes to putting plans in place for his first season in charge. As well as Sterling, the Gers are also closing in on signing Kieran Dowell and Jack Butland, both of which are also likely to sign for nothing.

It appears as if Beale is targeting a number of English-based players, with Karlan Grant, Auston Trusty and Leighton Clarkson also linked with moves north.

When it comes to Sterling, though, Beale will be getting a new right-back who can also turn out as a left-back if required. He previously impressed former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel back in 2021 but has made just one senior appearance for the Blues.

You’d expect he’ll be looking to break into Beale’s plans down the line, but doing so straightaway could prove tricky with club captain James Tavernier once again playing a key role this season and closing in on 400 Rangers appearances, with his Ibrox deal running until 2026.

However, with plenty of football to be played next season, there could be room for Sterling to feature on a regular basis, whether it be from the start to cover for Tavernier or appearances from the bench, so for free, it could prove to be a smart piece of business.
