Tottenham are have been bled dry by £37.5m dud who’s "the worst"

Tottenham Hotspur have spent big in their pursuit of a return to the top, and saw it finally come to fruition under the careful guidance of Mauricio Pochettino.

Joining from Southampton, the tactician quickly went about cultivating not just a squad but an atmosphere worthy of a club their size, helping to usher in a refreshing regime that not only would see them thrive, but also help players feel comfortable enough to play their best football free from burden.

As such, the likes of Toby Alderweireld, Heung-min Son, Harry Kane and Dele Alli were all transformed into some of the Premier League's finest in their roles, whilst even Jan Vertonghen and Christian Eriksen, who were left over from the previous management, were integrated too.

All the years of preparation finally seemed to be geared towards earning that elusive silverware until, spurred on by their failure in the Champions League final and inability to capitalise on the weakness of the division when Leicester City secured the title, Daniel Levy changed directions.

The appointments of Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte outlined a vast shift in the club's mindset, abandoning steady progression in favour of winning now. However, in brushing aside the journey, when the end result fell short, they were left with little to go back on.

Ange Postecoglou's entrance notes a return to what they know, as they seek to expunge those failures of the past in order to enjoy a brighter future.

Who is Spurs' worst-ever signing?

During that stint, and indeed whilst Pochettino was in charge, there were some true transfer howlers as additional money began being pumped into the game.

The 2017 sale of Neymar to Paris Saint-Germain completely altered the landscape of the transfer market, and since then, anything has become possible.

Selling clubs can seemingly command any fee, with Declan Rice's £105m move, and Moises Caicedo's £115m switch just weeks later, startling proof of this.

Whilst Spurs are yet to be so brazen with their funds, the likes of Tanguy Ndombele, Davinson Sanchez and Moussa Sissoko are all examples of a huge expenditure that offered very little return across their respective periods in N17.

Although his actual transfer fee might not have been as lofty as any of that aforementioned trio, that does not excuse the car crash of an acquisition that Sergio Reguilon was, and still proves to be, with the Spaniard still on Levy's books.

sergio-reguilon-real-madrid-tottenham-hotspur-emerson-transfer

Joining from Real Madrid under Mourinho's ill-fated tenure, the 26-year-old came with an impressive pedigree, expected to offer huge experience down that left flank alongside an injection of dynamism to benefit both ends of the pitch.

After all, in a recent loan spell with Sevilla before moving to England, the 5 foot 8 flop was named the best left-back in La Liga.

However, what they actually received was a nervous defender lacking in confidence, and seemingly incapable of retaining defensive shape or winning a 1-on-1 duel. As such, he was lambasted as recently as 2022 by pundit John Wenham: "He’s so average it’s untrue. I always go back to these constant rumours about Barcelona or Real Madrid being interested in him. There’s always stuff about them paying a premium for him, it’s nonsense.

"He’s just not that good. For me, he is the worst of the bunch."

Having since made 67 senior appearances, it should come as no surprise that Postecoglou was willing to sanction his swift exit in the summer, with the left-back moving on loan to Manchester United.

After all, his debut year in England saw him struggle, losing possession 16.1 times per game whilst being dribbled past 0.9 times per game, and only providing a disappointing 0.6 key passes per game too, via Sofascore.

Little altered as he remained at the club, as his chaotic and somewhat thoughtless presence at full-back was typified through his ridiculous own goal against Aston Villa in May 2021, as he needlessly swung at a clearance under no pressure, only to see the ball slice off his boot and beat Hugo Lloris in goal.

Offering little composure or offensive impetus, it should come as no surprise that he has since been banished.

How much did Spurs pay for Sergio Reguilon?

What makes the deal so disappointing, other than the fact that his woeful form has seen fans' expectations shattered given they were taking a young star from the Spanish giants, is the financial side of it.

Per Game

£559k

Per Minute

£7400

Per Goal

£18.75m

Per Assist

£4.1m

Per Yellow Card

£3.4m

After all, they were forced to unload a mouth-watering £32m to secure his services, in a deal that was somewhat overshadowed by the loan return of Gareth Bale.

This would perhaps explain the lack of uproar surrounding such foolish spending, which is made all the more laughable given Los Blancos inserted a buy-back clause into the deal, suggesting that they obviously had some faith that he could flourish.

What is Sergio Reguilon's salary at Spurs?

Whilst with big acquisitions an equally large salary usually follows, Reguilon strangely bucked the trend, likely due to the negotiations of the ever-frugal Levy.

As a youngster yet to truly prove his quality at a consistently elite level, a £53k-per-week deal made perfect sense, allowing for plenty of scope for improvement should he fulfil his potential.

However, that has obviously failed to occur, and it is now the Red Devils who are being forced to unload that figure as he sees out his season-long loan at Old Trafford.

Amid his failure to make Erik ten Hag's struggling and threadbare first team due to injury, his parent club are shining, although they have already forked out £5.5m on his wages previously.

Does Sergio Reguilon deserve to earn £53k-per-week?

It's certainly fair to say that Reguilon has done little to merit either his wage or transfer fee, given the lack of positive input offered.

After all, he was acquired by Mourinho in an effort to usher in a prosperous, trophy-laden era for a club, and obviously failed in that venture given they are still going 15 years and counting without tasting silverware.

Destiny Udogie

To combine the initial money spent to tempt him from Madrid with the two full years he has actually spent playing for the Lilywhites, and the defender has actually snagged a frustrating £37.5m from Levy's pocket.

A truly woeful piece of business that arguably typifies a period completely devoid of any long-term strategy.

Rangers: Bisgrove could get Ibrox rocking with "kamikaze" Beale replacement

Glasgow Rangers are on the search for a new head coach during a season for the third campaign in succession after they decided to part ways with Michael Beale on Sunday.

The Light Blues kicked off this run of bad luck in the dugout when Steven Gerrard was poached in November 2021.

He was replaced by Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who had previously played for the Light Blues, but the Dutchman only lasted until November of the following year.

Despite winning the SFA Cup and leading the club to the final of the Europa League, Rangers sacked the former defender during the break for the 2022 World Cup and appointed Beale as his successor.

Rangers Manager

Date of departure

Steven Gerrard

13/11/2021

Gio van Bronckhorst

21/11/2022

Michael Beale

01/10/2023

That move has turned out to be an error on Ross Wilson's part as the sporting director, who has since gone on to join Nottingham Forest, failed to bring in a suitable replacement for the Dutch boss.

Current chief executive James Bisgrove is now tasked with finding a manager who can bring success back to Ibrox and, hopefully, not be sacked by November 2024.

Who could replace Beale at Rangers?

Speaking on the BBC Radio 5 Live Monday Night Club (2 October), New York Times journalist Rory Smith named Bodo/Glimt head coach Kjetil Knutsen as one of the managers who is likely to be under 'consideration' by the Scottish giants, among a number of options.

This comes after the Norwegian boss was tipped as one of the 'frontrunners' to replace Van Bronckhorst during the 2022/23 campaign by The 4th Official.

Former Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

He was also named as a possible alternative to the Dutch tactician in 2021 after Gerrard's move to Villa, as Ross Wilson was a fan of his work, but the club ultimately opted for the former Light Blues full-back instead.

It could now be third time lucky for Rangers if they decide to go through with a swoop for the 54-year-old to take on the role this month.

Bisgrove could get Ibrox rocking with a move for Knutsen as he plays an exciting brand of football and would come in with a proven track record of coaching teams to win trophies.

What is Knutsen's style of play?

Bodo/Glimt captain Ulrik Saltnes once described his manager's style of play as “kamikaze” as his team is based around an intense, high-energy, press, a far cry from the turgid football of Beale's Rangers tenure.

Knutsen's side wants to dominate possession and control the game and do so by winning the ball back quickly after they lose it, which allows them to stop the opposition from countering them whilst providing themselves with more chances to make things happen at the top end of the pitch.

The 54-year-old typically deploys a high-pressing 4-3-3 set-up and this, along with his excellent attacking coaching, has led to them being a free-scoring team in recent seasons.

Bodo/Glimt head coach Kjetil Knutsen.

Journalist Connor McGilligan once claimed that his brand of football would be "fantastic to watch" for supporters, which is backed up by the statistics.

Bodo/Glimt scored a mind-boggling 103 goals in 30 Eliteserien matches throughout the 2020 campaign as they won the title with only one loss to their name and a positive goal difference of plus 71.

Whereas, Rangers have not scored more than 82 Scottish Premiership goals across 38 league games since their return to the top flight at the start of the 2016/17 campaign.

Meanwhile, Celtic scored 103 league goals on their way to the title under Ange Postecoglou during the 2022/23 season and this shows that it is possible for Knutsen to replicate his success with Bodo/Glimt in Scotland, as the Hoops have proven that you can dominate the division as a free-scoring, prolific, side.

How many trophies has Knutsen won?

The Gers managerial target has won two league titles in the Norwegian top-flight with his current club and his side are currently one point clear at the top of the table with seven games left to play in the 2023 campaign.

Knutsen won the Eliteserien in 2020 and 2021 but finished second in 2022 as Molde ran away with the title by 18 points. However, he is now closing in on a third title in four years and has proven himself capable of instilling a winning mentality within his squad.

Bodo/Glimt boss Kjetil Knutsen.

The former Asane head coach has been able to deploy an exciting style of play based on pressing high and getting the fans onside with aggressive play and a constant stream of goals to dominate and win matches, which has led to excellent success on the pitch and trophies on top.

Therefore, Bisgrove could get Ibrox rocking by appointing a manager whose brand of football could resonate with supporters and get them to buy into the process, due to the style and his proven track record of implementing it.

How many trophies has Beale won as a manager?

The fans in Glasgow did not have many reasons to get behind Beale's future at the club as he arrived without trophies to back his pedigree and failed to deploy an attractive style.

Former Rangers boss Michael Beale.

He has not won a single piece of silverware in his managerial career to date, with QPR or Rangers, and journalist Derek Clark claimed, earlier this season, that there was no sign of a clear way of playing from the English boss' team.

Reporter Graham Spiers also described Beale's style of football as "hapless" and the results on the pitch did not make up for the dull football as the Gers lost three of their first seven Premiership matches.

The Light Blues also failed to qualify for the group stages of the Champions League as they were hammered 5-1 by PSV in the second leg of their play-off tie, which shows that Beale struggled domestically and in Europe.

This suggests that it was the right decision by Bisgrove and the club to part ways with the former Aston Villa assistant manager as the performances and results were not going in the right direction.

There was very little for supporters to cling to in order to have faith that Beale would eventually be a success at Rangers and the Light Blues can now get the fans back onside by bringing Knutsen and his 'Kamikaze' style to Ibrox.

DLS explainer: Why Kings XI had to chase just 125

How dose the DLS system work? And would the VJD method have made a difference to KKR’s chances?

S Rajesh22-Apr-20181:27

Surprised asking rate dropped after rain – Karthik

The DLS method only takes into account three factors when calculating a target: The number of overs lost The stage of the innings when those overs were lost The wickets in hand at the time of the interruptionThe runs scored at the time of the break is immaterial. This is because it works on the basis of opportunity-cost of the overs lost to the batting team due to the interruption: the runs already scored do not come into the equation. In this case, Kings XI Punjab lost seven overs with ten wickets in hand; they had the potential to score many more runs compared to a case where they would have lost seven overs with, say, only three wickets in hand. DLS recognises this and allocates a certain percentage of resources lost by the batting team due to this interruption. The target is then reduced by the same percentage. How was the calculation performed in this case?Given the stage at which Kings XI lost those seven overs, and the fact that they had all ten wickets in hand, DLS calculated that they lost about 35% of their run-scoring potential. Hence, the revised target was about 65% of their original target. The target of 125 would have remained the same even if they had been 50 without loss or 75 without loss. If they had been 75 for no wicket, they would have required 50 off the last 28 balls, which would have been a much tougher ask. Thus Kings XI got the benefit of being way ahead of par score – which was 65 without loss – at the time of the break. How would the target have been different if Kings XI had lost more wickets, or if the seven-over break would have happened at the different stage of their innings? The difference would have been marginal if Kings XI had lost one or two wickets – 127 if they had been one down, and 129 if two – but had they been 96 for 4 at the time it rained, the revised target would have been 140, which would have meant 44 more runs in 28 balls. The fact that they racked up so many runs helped them hugely. If the seven-over interruption had happened just two overs into the innings, then Kings XI’s target would have been 136 (with all wickets in hand). However, had it rained after 11 overs instead of 8.2, and the same number of overs had been lost, the revised target would have been 117 (with all wickets in hand). That’s because, according to DLS calculations, the opportunity-cost of a break early in the innings is lesser than one that happens during the later stages of an innings.Karthik also mentioned that the VJD method – an alternative rain-rule system devised by V Jayadevan, which is used in Indian domestic cricket – should be used in the IPL. Would there have been a different target had VJD been used here? No, the VJD target in this case would also have been exactly the same – 125. The 8.2 over par score according to that method, though, was 71; DLS calculated it as 65. Incidentally, the VJD method also doesn’t look at the runs scored at the time of the interruption, so the situation for Karthik and for KKR would have been exactly the same regardless of which system was in use.

Celtic gem who won 100% duels starred alongside Kyogo v Dundee

Celtic maintained their position at the top of the Scottish Premiership table as they swept Dundee aside on Saturday with a 3-0 win at Parkhead.

Who scored for Celtic against Dundee?

David Turnbull opened the scoring from the penalty spot after he was adjudged to have been fouled just inside the box, although it took VAR to confirm that the incident was indeed a penalty rather than a free-kick.

The second then came as Callum McGregor floated a delicious cross in for Kyogo Furuhashi to rise and flick the ball past the goalkeeper with his head.

Celtic's Japanese marksman then turned provider as he raced down the right channel and produced a pinpoint cutback for Matt O'Riley to make it 3-0 and wrap up all three points.

How good was Kyogo against Dundee?

Whilst Kyogo caught the eye with a lethal display up front, the Denmark U21 international was an unsung hero for Brendan Rodgers with his display in the middle of the park.

Kyogo vs Dundee in numbers (via Sofascore)

22 touches

64% pass success

1 key pass

40% duels won

0 dribbles completed

The Japan international was not constantly involved in the match with regard to overall touches and did not provide a physical outlet for the team to play off through the middle of the pitch, but certainly made up for it with a goal and assist.

O'Riley, on the other hand, produced a fantastic all-round display throughout the match as he made an impact in and out of possession for the Scottish giants.

How good was Matt O'Riley against Dundee?

The 22-year-old was rock solid off the ball and did not allow the opposition to get the better of him in any physical contest as he won 100% (4/4) of his duels throughout 73 minutes on the pitch.

This certainly shows that he had too much strength for Dundee and was a brick wall in midfield for the Hoops.

His offensive play was also impressive too as the former MK Dons star caught the eye with his quality in possession. That included a composed and low finish for his third league goal of the campaign – matching his tally for the 2022/23 Premiership season already.

As per Sofascore, O'Riley completed 100% (2/2) of his attempted dribbles and had a pass success rate of 85%, which resulted in one key pass for his teammates, in 58 touches.

Celtic midfielder Matt O'Riley.

The central midfielder was reliable on the ball and rarely gave it away to the opposition, proving to be effective in his attacking actions, as the defenders found it impossible to dispossess him when he dribbled past them.

Kyogo certainly deserves plaudits for his two goal contributions that helped to secure all three points, ultimately receiving the highest Sofascore rating in the game (8.3).

However, O'Riley earned a rating of 8.0, which was the second-highest of the match, and as a result, was the unsung hero with the impact that he made at both ends of the pitch.

The ex-Fulham man put in an outstanding performance alongside Kyogo and Rodgers will surely be hoping for more of the same from the pair moving forward, particularly ahead of their Champions League clash with Feyenoord on Tuesday night.

'It's up to the middle order to take responsibility' – Mashrafe

The 10-wicket drubbing by Sri Lanka has served as a wake-up call for Bangladesh, their captain Mashrafe Mortaza has said. He hoped the middle order could do better in the final in the event that both Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan, the two in-form batsmen, fall cheaply again.Between them, Tamim and Shakib had scored five half-centuries in Bangladesh’s first three matches of the tri-nation series. On Thursday, both fell for single-digit scores as Bangladesh collapsed to 82 all out. The middle-order trio of Mahmudullah, Sabbir Rahman and Nasir Hossain made 7, 10 and 3 respectively, and Mashrafe warned his team from relying too much on Shakib, whose promotion to No 3 has opened up opportunities for the rest of the batting line-up.”It is a nice wake-up call,” Mashrafe said. “We have found out how poorly we can play on our bad day. There’s no guarantee of not losing Shakib and Tamim early in the final, so now we have an idea. [Mahmudullah] Riyad has handled these situations in the past. Sabbir played his 50th ODI today. They have the ability.”I think the top-order’s failure today exposed the middle-order but this wasn’t the extent we had expected. There was no need to rush after four wickets fell. Strike-rate of 50 could have been pushed up to 75 or 80 later on. We have to discuss whether this was thought about, in the middle. Shakib has played at No 5 for the last 10-11 years. It is now up to the middle-order to take responsibility. We can’t keep playing around Shakib.”According to Mashrafe, Nasir and Sabbir are perhaps having finding it difficult to curtail their free-scoring approach when the situation demands it. With his side 57 for four in the 17th over, Sabbir charged Thisara Perera and toe-ended an attempted big hit to mid-on. Nasir, meanwhile, tickled a Dushmantha Chameera delivery that was way down the leg-side. His failure in this game left him with only five runs from his last three innings.”Possibly they are not able to absorb the pressure,” Mashrafe said. “Maybe they like to score runs quickly rather than spend time in the middle. In our first-class cricket, they have 100 strike-rate after early wickets. It is possibly beyond our nature to slow down after the fall of few wickets.”I think they are feeling guilty, probably more than me. I would want them to think about it before the final, but they should also remain positive.”Anamul Haque remains a cause for concern as well. He was the first wicket to fall in this game, dragging a wide delivery back onto his stumps, giving him a total of 55 runs in four innings thus far in the series. He hasn’t managed to replicate his domestic form upon his return to international cricket after two years, which has coincided with plenty of social-media clamor calling for his selection.”There has been a lot of talk about [Anamul] Bijoy, that he is scoring runs in all levels,” Mashrafe said. “I think more than us, you have exposed him more, which is true. But we have full faith in him, which is why he is still playing continuously.”

Root on Smith laughter: 'If that's not motivation, I don't know what is'

While he did not quite say that Australia had crossed a line, Joe Root did suggest they had behaved in a way in which England would not

George Dobell in Adelaide30-Nov-20171:27

WATCH – Root, Smith revisit headbutt laughs

The memory of Steven Smith laughing in the Brisbane post-game press conference is all the motivation England need in Adelaide according to captain Joe Root. The England camp were underwhelmed by the image of the Australia captain in near hysterics as Cameron Bancroft revealed details of the incident between him and Jonny Bairstow in Perth a month earlier. While it would be wrong to interpret that laughter as necessarily disrespectful or mocking – there were some comically absurd moments in the press conference – the idea that Smith should be so amused by an incident that embarrassed Bairstow and briefly destabilised the England camp has left quite a mark on Root and his team. And while he did not quite say that Australia had crossed a line, Root did suggest they had behaved in a way in which England would not.”I think their line and our line are slightly different things, let’s leave it at that,” Root said.”To see a reaction like that in a press conference is… I mean if that can’t get you up for the next game then I don’t know what can. If that’s not motivation to the players, I don’t know what is.”Hopefully that will work massively in our favour. I know it’s an Ashes series, there is a lot on the line and naturally you are going to be motivated for every game but knowing the characters in our dressing-room that will really give them a bit of something else to make sure we put things right this week.”I wouldn’t say we’re angry, it’s more about how respond to it and make sure we do it in our way and not get dragged in to doing it in their way.”It’s not how we roll. It’s not how we operate as a team. I think it is very important we continue to play this tour in the manner that we have gone about it so far and that we don’t get involved in petty disputes and arguments that are nothing to do with cricket.”While England were disappointed with the episode, they were not especially surprised. Root referenced both the “mintgate” affair involving Faf du Plessis in November 2016 and Jonathan Trott’s breakdown in Brisbane during the previous Ashes in Australia as examples of previous incidents that had precipitated a hysterical reaction, suggesting it might be “a strategy.””I think it’s something you expect when you come here now,” Root said. “You look at Faf-gate last year and there were comments last time we were here as well with Trotty and other players. It’s part of touring Australia now I think.”It’s a strategy they use on occasions and we’ve got to move forward as a team. We all knew it was blown widely out of proportion.”In truth, it is probably the result – and the margin of defeat – that smarts the most. Although England feel they competed well for the first three days of the match, the fact is that Australia won by a pretty crushing 10 wickets. But Root maintained that England showed how they could win in Brisbane; they just didn’t sustain the performance for long enough. And with this match being played under lights and using a pink ball, he feels conditions may be in England’s favour.”Take Steve Smith’s innings out of it and they were 160 all out in the first innings,” he said. “We made him work extremely hard for his runs and kept him very quiet by his standards. By doing that it built pressure at the other end and we took wickets.”In terms of our batting, we need to do what we did in the first innings for longer. The way we went about it and, in particular, how the inexperienced guys handled pressure situations was really promising. But promising doesn’t win you Test matches.”We have to turn those two-and-a-half hour periods into full days of cricket. If we do that we’ll win games. If we scored 400 plus in that first innings and were really clinical with the ball when we had them seven down, I have every confidence we would have won that game.”The pink ball game has come at a good time for us. We played at this ground a couple of weeks ago and have a good idea of what the conditions can be like. It might be a little bit cooler as well, looking at the forecast, with a bit of rain around, so you are looking at more English style conditions. You saw at Brisbane that as soon as the ball did do anything sideways, we were massively in the game.”That is going to be our big focus moving forward: being ruthless as a bowling unit and getting the ball moving laterally. We have to find ways to get stuff out of the wicket when it is slightly flatter and if we can do that I have full confidence we will bowl them out cheaply on a number of occasions on this tour.”

Tottenham Could Copy Hojbjerg Success By Signing "World-Class" £40m Target

Tottenham Hotspur could be set to swoop in and repeat a recent success under their new boss…

Is James Ward-Prowse leaving Southampton?

Despite West Ham United being the side seemingly in command to secure the signing of James Ward-Prowse, complications arose that scuppered a deal seemingly progressing smoothly.

As such, the Daily Star are now suggesting that the Lilywhites are seeking to prey on that hesitancy, hijacking David Moyes’ move with a bigger bid.

Read the latest Tottenham transfer news HERE…

The report states that Ange Postecoglou’s outfit are much more likely to match Southampton’s £40m valuation than the Hammers, who could only muster up a £25m bid recently.

Spurs have been watching the English midfielder for months now.

How many goals has James Ward-Prowse scored for Southampton?

The Saints skipper has been a Premier League stalwart ever since his promotion to the first team in 2011, rising through their academy to feature 410 for the senior squad.

During this period, in which the south coast club have starred and suffered across the last decade, the 28-year-old maestro has remained a reliable and constantly outstanding figure in the engine room of every manager to pass through their doors.

As such, even last year during their eventual relegation, he still managed 11 goals and five assists across all competitions.

Nathan Jones, who oversaw a portion of that campaign, hailed his midfield mastermind: “He's been outstanding. When I arrived at the club my first conversation with him was ten minutes after he didn't get picked for the England squad.

“Since that moment, he's been absolutely world-class for me. For me, the way he's been around it and the way he reacted – we're seeing his performances now that are motivated and driven.”

Capable of dictating from deep or operating as an attacking midfielder, Ward-Prowse would arguably be the perfect technician to fit within Postecoglou’s system, which often requires two hard-working and attack-minded no.8s.

pierre-emile-hojbjerg

With 55 goals and 54 assists during his time at the St Mary’s, alongside the 85% pass accuracy, two key passes and 1.7 tackles per game (via Sofascore) he posted last year in the Premier League, he further emphasises such a suggestion.

Not only that but by swooping from Southampton yet again, it could emulate the success earned when Jose Mourinho tempted Pierre-Emile Hojjberg to join the north London outfit back in 2020.

The Danish enforcer moved for just £15m and has since featured 145 times for the club. And yet, after three fine years of service, they could now be set to make a profit on the 28-year-old, as Atletico Madrid continue to push for his services.

Given his last two seasons have seen him maintain a 7.11 and 7.19 average rating in the league, ranking him within Spurs’ top-five performers in both years, it is fair to say his acquisition marked a masterclass from Daniel Levy for a pleasant change, which could get even better as they push him towards an exit and usher in an exciting future under the new management.

Perhaps Ward-Prowse could have a similarly influential effect, helping to provoke a new, brighter era for the club, with his dynamism and attacking impetus key in instigating that change.

Liverpool Eyeing £34m "Mountain" Alongside Lavia

Liverpool are still interested in signing Torino defender Perr Schuurs and appear to have held talks over a potential move.

What’s the latest Liverpool transfer news?

Preparations are being made at Anfield ahead of the 2023/24 Premier League campaign, with two new midfielders already brought in for Jurgen Klopp.

Deals for Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai have been completed, with the pair signing from Brighton and RB Leipzig respectively at a combined cost of €112m (£96m).

However, there have been more midfielders leave Merseyside than arrive. James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita all left on free transfers when their contracts expired and Jordan Henderson has now departed to join Steven Gerrard in Saudi Arabia.

Fabinho could be the next to move on, which has led to Liverpool looking at a move for another midfielder in Southampton’s Romeo Lavia. An opening £40m offer has been turned down by the Saints, however, it is “increasingly likely that a compromise will be reached”, according to James Pearce, with anew bidbeing prepared.

Alongside Lavia, it appears as if the Reds, and by extension owners FSG and sporting director Jorg Schmadtke, also have their eyes on signing a new defender before the September 1 deadline.

Schuurs has been linked with a move to Merseyside, with speculation first emerging back in 2020, and the player is reportedly happy to join the Reds, with more news emerging in the last 48 hours.

Sport Witness relayed an update from Toro.it regarding Schuurs. Liverpool and Crystal Palace were named with an interest in the defender, however, negotiations have frozen due to Torino’s €40m (£34m) asking price, implying that talks have been held between the Italian side and those at Anfield.

The two Premier League sides don’t plan to give up on a potential deal, though, with Klopp identifying Schuurs to possibly play alongside fellow countryman Virgil van Dijk going forward.

Who is Perr Schuurs?

Schuurs is 23 years of age and is an out-and-out centre-back who is sponsored by Nike. He began his career in Fortuna Sittard’s academy before moving to Ajax in 2018. Schuurs made 95 senior appearances for the Eredivisie giants before going on to sign for Torino last summer.

Since then, the defender has been a regular in Italy, turning out on 33 occasions during the previous campaign, averaging more tackles and clearance per 90 than any of his teammates, as per WhoScored.

Journalist Josh Bunting described Schuurs as a “mountain" last year, and it looks as if he is at the peak of his powers with a career-high €25m Transfermarkt valuation.

Klopp currently has five senior centre-back options to choose from in Van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and Nathaniel Phillips, although the latter of the five has been linked with an exit.

Therefore, should one or two centre-backs leave Merseyside over the coming weeks, Schuurs could be viewed as a solid replacement, and it appears as if a deal could be one to keep an eye on over the coming weeks.
