Geoff Allardice: All Test matches to carry same points weightage in 2021-23 WTC

The ICC’s acting CEO has said teams will continue to be ranked based on percentage of points contested

Nagraj Gollapudi14-Jun-2021The shift to a ranking based on the percentage of points contested, which came about thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic, will extend into the second (2021-23) edition of the World Test Championship, with one caveat. Instead of 120 points being available over each series, independent of the length of the series, every Test match will now carry an equal number of points. At the end of the WTC cycle, teams will be ranked based on the percentage of points accrued over all the matches they have played. The above points system was revealed by Geoff Allardice, the ICC’s acting chief executive officer, during a media chat organised by the ICC on Monday. As a consequence of several series in the first cycle of the WTC being postponed due to the pandemic, the ICC altered the points system last November, deciding to rank teams based on the percentage of points won from the series they contested.Related

WTC winners to take home USD 1.6 million as well as Test Championship mace

That shift allowed New Zealand, which was behind India, Australia and England in the points tally at the time, to leapfrog those teams and become the first team to make the inaugural WTC final after consecutive home series wins over West Indies and Pakistan. India’s historic 2-1 win in Australia, followed by a 3-1 victory at home against England, allowed them to book the second finalist’s slot and eventually finish on top of the WTC table.During the 2019-21 WTC cycle, every series – regardless of length – had 120 points up for grabs•Ishita Mazumder/ESPNcricinfo LtdFour days before the WTC final, Allardice said the ICC had decided to stick to the percentage-of-points-won methodology as it provided twin benefits. “We are going to stick with the percentage-of-points-won method to rank teams,” Allardice said. “When we looked at the first 12 months of the competition you had teams on a number of points, but it was all relative to how many series they had played. So one of the ways to compare teams on an ongoing basis is what proportion of the points that have been available in the matches they played have been actually won. And that percentage served us well in the second half of the Championship.Watch cricket on ESPN+

The WTC final is available in the US on ESPN+. Subscribe to ESPN+ and tune in to the match.

“The other thing is if we are using the percentage of points won we can put a standardised number of points per Test match. So it doesn’t matter if it is a two-Test series or a five-Test series, the same number of points will be available for each match that’s played, but every team would be judged on the percentage of those points it wins, not on total.”The alteration in the points system was originally devised and recommended by the ICC Cricket Committee, which is headed by former India captain Anil Kumble. However, not everyone was impressed by the ICC’s move. Ahead of the four-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy last year, India captain Virat Kohli said the amended points system was “confusing”. India had played four out of their six scheduled series in the WTC cycle at that point and were leading the table with 360 points. However, Australia, who had earned 296 points from three series, toppled India after the revision, with 82.22 percentage points (296 out of 360) compared to the latter’s 75 (360 out of 480).Allardice understood the critics’ view, but said the ICC had had no option but to change the system. “The principle that we had when we created the competition was that every match in a series that was played as part of the Test Championship should count. The point system was also to try and reflect that a two-match series is worth the same as a five-match series. That was trying to make sure that everyone was playing for the same number of points in total, everyone was playing for the same number points home and away. The points system for the inaugural WTC was changed midway through the competition due to the disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic•Getty Images”One of things that happened during this cycle is that it became evident that not everyone was going to complete their six series as a result of some of the postponements due to Covid. So we left the final in the spot in the calendar where it was originally scheduled. But because we are going to have teams playing uneven number of series we needed to tweak to the points system to try and make it as fair as possible and to make sure it reflected the matches that they did play rather than too heavily influenced by they didn’t play.”As it turned out it was a fair system. New Zealand didn’t play one series as a result of the Covid disruption las year, but they’ve still been able to qualify for the final through the strength of their performances in other series. So we prefer not to have changed the points system in the middle of a tournament but due to the circumstances of Covid and the need to ensure that the best two teams got to the final we thought it was necessary that it was approved at the end of last year.”Best-of-three final not “realistic”
Allardice also said the suggestion of India coach Ravi Shastri to have a best-of-three final to determine the winner of the second edition of the WTC – was a good one but not “realistic”, due to the lack of a free window for such an event in the cricket calendar.”In a perfect world a three-Test series would be a great way to decide the World Test Championship,” Allardice said. “But the reality (of) the international cricket schedule is we are just not going to have [a situation where] blocking out a month or so for all the teams in the tournament for the final is realistic. That’s why one-match final was decided upon. Why it is quite exciting is because it brings something new. Here were are – we’ve got a one-off Test match to decide the best team in the world over this two-year cycle.”Draw “certainly a valid result”
Allardice was asked whether it was fair on the two finalists in case the match were to end in a draw due to rain interruptions. Announcing the WTC prize money on Monday, the ICC said both teams would share the Test mace, and the pot of USD 2.4 million, in case of a draw.”One of the idiosyncrasies of Test cricket is that the draw is a result,” Allardice said. “One of things while talking about the structure of the competition was to we didn’t want to start the final with one team having to win and one team having to draw, so both teams start on Friday even. They have five playing days to get a result. We have set aside a reserve day so that if time is lost during those five days it can be further made up on the reserve day. It isn’t a six-day Test match.”And if after those five days the result is a draw, then the view was that the fitting result is that the Championship is shared. Whether we like it or not a draw is certainly a valid result in Test cricket.”

Celtic monitoring £15m "monster" who’d be a big Iwata upgrade

Celtic could be active in the transfer market over the next two weeks before the summer transfer window officially slams shut at the end of the month.

The Hoops have not been particularly active in bringing new players to Parkhead so far, though, with three players coming in on permanent deals.

Goalkeepers Viljami Sinisalo and Kasper Schmeichel have come in to compete for the number one spot and Paulo Bernardo has joined on a permanent basis, after his loan spell from Benfica last season.

The Scottish giants are reportedly on the verge of a deal to sign Adam Idah from Norwich City for a potential club-record fee of £9.5m this week.

They have agreed a deal with the Canaries and may be hoping to wrap that move up in time for him to make his second Celtic debut, having spent the second half of last term on loan in Glasgow, in the League Cup this weekend.

The Hoops have also been linked with an interest in his Norwich teammate Abu Kamara, who produced a goal and an assist against Stevenage for the Yellows on Tuesday night.

Celtic could also add to their options in the middle of the park before the end of the summer transfer window, as a new midfield target has emerged.

Celtic keen on Premier League battler

According to The Sun, the Hoops are interested in signing Liverpool defensive midfielder Wataru Endo to bolster Brendan Rodgers' squad this month.

The report claims that the Scottish giants are monitoring the Japan international's situation, as they seemingly weigh up whether or not to make a move for the former Bundesliga ace.

It states that the Hoops are 'huge admirers' of the midfield battler but it remains to be seen what that means for the current window and their plans.

The Sun adds that Liverpool are open to cashing in on the experienced brute, who has dropped down the pecking order at Anfield since Arne Slot replaced Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.

It reveals that Ryan Gravenberch and Stefan Bajcetic have been deemed to be better options than Endo in the number six role by the Dutch coach, which has opened the door to a possible exit.

However, the report claims that the Premier League giants are currently looking for a fee in the region of £15m for the Japanese ace, who has already been the subject of a rejected bid from Marseille.

Rodgers could, though, land a big upgrade on his only current natural number six – Tomoki Iwata – by working out a deal with his former club for Endo.

Tomoki Iwata's form for Celtic

The 27-year-old ace started the 2023/24 campaign on the fringes of the first-team at Celtic and it may not have surprised many if he had moved on, given the likes of Bernardo, Odin Thiago Holm, and Hyeok-kyu Kwon were brought in to bolster the midfield.

Patience was key for Iwata, though, as he remained at Parkhead and worked hard to make himself a genuine option for Rodgers in the second half of the season.

Tomoki Iwata

The Japanese maestro ended the campaign with 19 appearances and nine starts in the Scottish Premiership, which shows that he was a decent squad option for the Scottish giants.

Iwata provided a calming presence at the base of the midfield when selected, with the likes of Callum McGregor, Matt O'Riley, Bernardo, and Reo Hatate then allowed to push on ahead of him.

As you can see in the table above, the Celtic ace was reliable with the ball at his feet with a pass accuracy of 90% showing that he rarely gave possession away with his passes.

However, Iwata's mobility and physicality let him down at times out of possession. He only won 50% of his duels and made just 1.2 tackles and interceptions per game to cut out opposition attacks.

This suggests that he was unable to consistently make multiple defensive interventions each match to prevent Joe Hart's goal from being

threatened.

Rodgers could now upgrade on Iwata by swooping to sign Endo from Liverpool, if Celtic can agree a reasonable deal with the Premier League side.

Why Wataru Endo would be a big upgrade

The 31-year-old enforcer is an experienced defensive midfielder who has proven his quality in and out of possession in both the Premier League and the Bundesliga in recent seasons.

Despite standing at 5 foot 10, Endo has the physical quality to come in and improve Celtic's team from an aerial perspective in comparison to Iwata, who lost 53% of his aerial duels in the Premiership last term.

Liverpool midfielder Wataru Endo

Whereas, the Liverpool midfielder won 58% of his aerial battles in the 2022/23 Bundesliga campaign for Stuttgart and 53% of them in the Premier League last season.

This suggests that his presence in the Celtic side would provide Rodgers with more solidity defensively, from set-pieces and crosses from open play, as well as a potential threat in the opposition's box.

Endo's all-round defensive play and security in possession could also see him offer more than Iwata for the Scottish giants in the number six position.

As you can see in the table above, the 31-year-old brute has averaged far more tackles and interceptions per game in the Bundesliga and the Premier League – two of Europe's major leagues – than the Hoops midfielder managed in the Premiership last term.

Endo, who was hailed as "exceptional" and a "machine" by Klopp last season, could come in and make more defensive interventions to help his side out at the base of the Celtic midfield, which could help them in the Champions League when competing against high-quality opposition.

ByDan Emery Aug 14, 2024

The £15m-rated ace is used to playing in big matches, in Europe's major leagues, and that could give him another advantage over Iwata when it comes to playing in European games, which is another reason why Rodgers must push to land him this summer.

And following a 2-1 loss to West Ham, the Dutchman was relieved of his duties. Stepping in on an interim basis, former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy successfully turned the tide to an extent, with three wins and a draw bridging the transition period before Amorim’s appointment.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Fernandes and Amorim never shared the dressing room at Sporting, as the midfielder left the Lisbon club for United before the manager took over. However, the midfielder has keenly observed Amorim’s achievements from afar and believes that his connection with players sets him apart as a coach capable of inspiring success.

  • WHAT FERNANDES SAID

In an interview with Fernandes saidFor me what stands out for me is the connection he has with players. When the manager is going from your club in the middle of the season with all the things they have still to win, you see the way they say goodbye to him, the way they make him feel part of the team and the way they treat him, it shows he's a great character and he is someone that gives his all to the players."

Fernandes added that Amorim’s influence is particularly evident in how he shields players from criticism and supports them through challenges, a trait Fernandes hopes Amorim will bring to Old Trafford.

"I have seen many moments where players were struggling and he goes to the press conference to defend his players to give them the best opportunity to shine," he said. "He had a really young team so he needed to do that, hopefully, he can do the same with us."

Liverpool player ratings vs RB Leipzig: Darwin Nunez has lift-off! Striker & Caoimhin Kelleher come up clutch as Reds maintain 100% Champions League record

GOAL rates all the Reds on show at the Red Bull Arena as Arne Slot's side showcased their invaluable strength in depth

Liverpool’s perfect record in this season’s Champions League remains intact, even if their performance in Wednesday night’s 1-0 win over RB Leipzig was far from flawless. The Reds started and finished the game at the Red Bull Arena poorly but got the job done thanks to two players who probably wouldn’t have been used had everyone been fit.

Darwin Nunez, standing in for Diogo Jota in attack, proved unusually decisive, scoring the game’s only goal when he arrived into the six-yard box to tap in Mohamed Salah’s downward header, while Caoimhin Kelleher once again showed why he’s considered the best No.2 in world football by making a couple of crucial late saves that first-choice goalkeeper Alisson Becker would have been very proud of.

Below, GOAL rates all of the Reds on show in Germany as Liverpool leaned on their impressive resilience and strength in depth to make it 11 wins from 12 games in all competitions so far this season ahead of Sunday’s crunch Premier League clash with Arsenal at the Emirates…

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Caoimhin Kelleher (7.5/10):

Got away with making a mess of an early attempted clearance but made a couple of decent stops from well-struck drives in the first half before essentially earning Liverpool the win with a couple of great saves in the final quarter.

    Trent Alexander-Arnold (6.5/10):

No issues from a defensive perspective and, as usual, caused problems with his passing. It was Trent's cross-field ball to Gakpo that led to Liverpool breaking the deadlock. Far from his most influential display, though.

    Ibrahima Konate (6.5/10):

Hadn't been remotely troubled before losing the ball in a horribly dangerous area and was lucky to be bailed out by Kelleher.

    Virgil van Dijk (7.5/10):

His usual commanding self and very nearly scored from a Tsimikas corner.

    Kostas Tsimikas (7/10):

A couple of loose passes from the Greek here and there but his crossing was a constant threat. No surprise to see him effectively create the opener with a great ball for Salah.

    Midfield

    Ryan Gravenberch (7.5/10):

Yet another impressive showing from the Dutchman, who really does look like the real deal as a defensive midfielder. Work rate is excellent and is great on the ball, with this wonderful ability to just glide past opponents.

    Alexis Mac Allister (7/10):

Inexplicably booked for diving after being bundled over in midfield but grew into the game and struck the bar with a fine curling effort from the edge of the area after a sublime one-two with Dominik Szoboszlai.

    Dominik Szoboslzai (7.5/10):

Still doing so much of the dirty work for his team but also showed his quality going forward, linking superbly with first Gakpo and then Mac Allister to create two big chances.

  • AFP

    Attack

    Mohamed Salah (6/10):

Registered an assist with the goal-bound header that Nunez poked home but was pretty quiet overall. Indeed, he was the least ineffective of the front three by some distance, so Slot was right to replace him midway through the second half – no doubt with one eye on Sunday.

    Darwin Nunez (7.5/10):

Started up front in the absence of the injured Jota and led the line very well, proving a real pain in the neck for Leipzig's defenders. Deserved his goal and probably should have had a penalty too.

    Cody Gakpo (7.5/10):

Retained his spot on the left wing ahead of Luis Diaz and was once again a real livewire in his preferred position. Flashed an effort wide after a terrific run into the centre and also saw an instinctive, close-range effort blocked by Peter Gulacsi.

    Subs & Manager

    Luis Diaz (6/10):

Came on for Salah just after the hour mark but made little impact aside from one late strike that was easily saved.

    Curtis Jones (N/A):

Replaced Nunez as Slot sought greater solidity in midfield with Liverpool losing control of the game late on.

    Andy Robertson (N/A):

Took over at left-back from Tsimikas for the final 15 minutes of normal time.

    Joe Gomez (N/A):

As against Arsenal, the versatile defender was brought on in place of Alexander-Arnold as Liverpool looked to shut up shop.

    Arne Slot (7/10):

It was by no means pretty but Slot will be delighted with his side, who are developing a nice habit of managing to win without playing well. He'll also be thrilled by the performance of Nunez up front, particularly if Jota won't be ready to return up top against Arsenal.

Man Utd ready bid for Olise clone who’s outperformed Garnacho & Rashford

Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford look set to be the two wingers that Manchester United will enter their new era with.

The Argentine enjoyed a fantastic 2023/24 campaign, developing into an irreplaceable ace, while the number ten struggled to live up to expectations.

Therefore, next season, both attackers will have a point to prove to not just themselves but also the fanbase and Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at a Man United target who outperformed the aforementioned duo last season.

Man Utd’s quest for attacking reinforcement

As per a report from Football Insider, Man United are very keen on bringing Eberechi Eze to Old Trafford.

The report says that the Crystal Palace star ‘ticks a lot of boxes for the new-look INEOS recruitment staff.’

However, Tottenham Hotspur are also extremely interested, and alongside the Red Devils, the two clubs are ‘ready to pay’ for Eze.

That said, the attacking midfielder has a release clause of £60m in his contract, which is a fee that the Eagles will demand this summer.

This is the same fee in Michael Olise’s contract, who has also been frequently linked with a move to Old Trafford this month.

How Eze compares to Rashford and Garnacho

There’s no two ways about it: last season, Eze was one of the most influential players in the entire Premier League.

Despite some of his campaign being hindered by injuries, he impressed every time he was on the field across his 24 league starts.

Whether the England international was operating as an attacking midfielder or even out wide on the left, his level of performance remained extremely high.

This is highlighted by his 11 goals and four assists, as well as the fact that he will feature for England at the European Championships this summer.

As you can see, Eze’s output and overall performance were much better than those of Rashford and Garnacho last season.

First of all, Eze’s output is far superior, which is due to his ability to work his way into goal-scoring positions in central areas, whether that be in the box or on the edge of it.

Although his actual assist tally is rather low, Palace’s number ten is always the creative outlet in the side, using his excellent combination ability and vision to continuously create chances far more often than Rashford and Garnacho.

Yet, what makes Eze unstoppable at times is his ability to create a moment of magic out of nothing, mainly via his mesmerising dribbling and carrying of the ball.

As of right now, the two United wingers are much better when playing on the counterattack rather than against a settled defence, but Eze has the ability to unlock opponents in any game state.

On top of that, the England international works tirelessly off the ball to ensure his side aren’t vulnerable, often making tackles and regaining possession, much more than the United attacking duo.

Another aspect that makes Eze an ideal pick-up is that, according to FBref, he’s classified as a 'similar player' to Olise, which means that the Red Devils will be able to secure a fine alternative to the Frenchman this summer.

Indeed, it’s quite clear that Eze has all the attributes and character to thrive at Man United, and his £60m price tag is a rather fair representation of his quality.

Everton eyeing "incredible" Onana replacement who’s never won at Goodison

It could be a long summer transfer window at Everton, who are already reportedly eyeing a move to sign a midfielder who could replace Amadou Onana, should the Belgian decide to leave Goodison Park in the coming months.

Everton transfer news

In an ideal world, Everton wouldn't need to sell players of Onana's quality, but without the completion of a takeover and concerns over even more FFP sanctions, the Belgium international is reportedly a player they are willing to sacrifice in a big-money sale with the likes of Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain interested in his signature.

Everton struck gold on "top-class" signing who's worth more than Phillips

He’s catapulted himself into a key player under Sean Dyche this season.

The sale would follow Sean Dyche's earlier prediction, having admitted to The Guardian at the start of May: "If the [777] takeover doesn’t happen, or a takeover, then it will probably be juggling dust, not sand.

"Because who knows then? You are having to self-generate everything then, I would imagine, because it’s not like there is a pile of cash anywhere so you’ve got to self-generate. And if you self-generate, how do you get in what you are losing? If someone leaves, how do you get the next one in who is as good as the one leaving? There is no time for development [of young players] because this club hasn’t got time for that.”

With that said, if Everton do sell Onana, they'll still need a replacement and reports suggest that they've lined one up in the form of a former Premier League loanee. According to TuttoJuve, Everton are eyeing a move to sign Weston McKennie alongside interest from both Newcastle United and Aston Villa in a deal that would be worth between €20m and €25m (£17m and £21m) this summer.

Whether Everton will be able to afford such a fee remains to be seen, however, in what sums up their struggles once and for all ahead of a difficult few months.

"Incredible" McKennie isn't without his risks

Whatever Everton spend this summer, they must make sure that every deal makes a significant enough impact to prove worthwhile, and after McKennie's failed stint on loan at Leeds United last season, he's a risk they must weigh up. Goodison Park saw the American and the rest of his Leeds teammates fall short in a 1-0 defeat at Goodison Park in the last campaign in a crucial result in the relegation battle, but he has since bounced back at Juventus.

Whilst Onana's ability off the ball is better, McKennie's creative output and ball-carrying ability would hand Everton an added dynamic alongside the similar Abdoulaye Doucoure.

What's more, even whilst at Leeds, McKennie earned plenty of praise, including from former manager Jesse Marsch, who said via Leeds Live: "He's got incredible flexibility and can play almost any position on the pitch and I've seen that. He's aggressive, he's confident and he has quality.

"At Schalke they played a little bit similar to the things that I like to do, so now even sitting and talking to him about what we think his role will be, he's pretty clear on how to integrate himself. Training over the past week, he's been outstanding."
