Wakely's timely half-century leads determined Northants effort

Contributions throughout the order, aided by some poor Leicestershire fielding, gave the home side a solid first innings in tricky conditions

ECB Reporters Network24-Jun-2019Alex Wakely made his first half-century since resigning the Northamptonshire captaincy to lead his side to a good opening day against Leicestershire at Wantage Road. Wakely’s 65 in testing conditions set Northants up to make 299 having been sent in before the visitors survived three overs to the close 6 for 0.Wakely’s 76 on the first day of the season was becoming a distant memory with a high score in the Championship since then of only 28. Stepping down as captain didn’t bring immediate reward with an eight-ball duck at Durham in his previous innings, but here he battled away to make important runs against the moving ball.He arrived in just the sixth over of the morning and flicked Mohammed Abbas through midwicket for his first boundary before imperiously pulling Neil Dexter’s first ball through the same region on his way to 36 not out by the lunch. After the break, another pull brought up a second half-century of the season in 102 balls with eight fours before he was tremendously caught at second slip in Abbas’ first over of a new spell 20 minutes before tea. Trying to force off the back foot, Wakely flashed an edge towards the cordon where Colin Ackermann stuck up a left hand to claim a fine catch. It ended a stand of 39 for the fourth wicket – one of several useful partnerships that Northants compiled. The ball moved all day on a green-tinged pitch and under heavy cloud and it was difficult to envisage the batsmen ever getting completely on top so to nudge the board along with good purpose – reaching 187 for 4 at one stage – was a solid effort. There were few cheap wickets. Rob Newton fell to the new ball for just 5 but everyone else got a start. Ricardo Vasconcelos worked hard for 25 before lazily driving to gully. Temba Bavuma was always scratchy but got to 20, then Dieter Klein found his outside edge with a good delivery. Rob Keogh looked in good touch, striking five boundaries but fell over a full delivery from Chris Wright to be lbw for 34.The theme continued on a day where it was hard to say any batsmen were really settled. Adam Rossington, now Northants’ Championship captain, made a breezy 45 – violently pulling Dexter over midwicket and repeating the trick against Klein to raise a first batting point. But Rossington was bowled by Will Davis and it began a slide from 210 for 5 to 250 for 9 as the second new ball claimed 3 for 7 in 13 balls. But just when Northants were about to be rolled over Matt Coles, in his second match on loan from Essex, swung 41 in 34 balls including two mighty sixes – one over midwicket and the second over deep square – to almost claim a third batting bonus point before No. 11 Ben Sanderson chipped a catch back to Abbas. But Coles should have been taken on the deep midwicket fence with the score at 265. It was one of at least seven catches that Leicestershire missed in a miserable display of fielding. Paul Horton at first slip, wicketkeeper Lewis Hill and Harry Dearden all missed two chances each as the visitors conceded an over par total given the conditions.

Reporter has heard that Leeds want to sign Sam Byram upgrade this month

Leeds United are keen to bring in quality this month and are lining up an upgrade in a problem position at Elland Road, according to a report.

Leeds need to replace Djed Spence

Djed Spence joined Leeds United on loan from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer and much was expected of the England Under-21 cap due to his previous pedigree in the Championship, which saw him play a vital role in Nottingham Forest's 2021/22 promotion campaign and poke fun at former boss Neil Warnock with this famous tweet.

Nevertheless, the 23-year-old struggled to settle into Daniel Farke's plans at Elland Road in a spell plagued by injury and has now returned to north London after the Whites activated his recall clause. Now close to joining Genoa on a similar basis, the focus in Yorkshire will now turn towards finding his replacement.

Full-back depth within Farke's squad has taken another dip in numbers after news from The Telegraph broke indicating that Whites veteran Luke Ayling will join Middlesbrough on loan for the remainder of the campaign. Burnley defender Connor Roberts has emerged as a target to help fill the available slot on the right-hand side of defence and could offer a wealth of experience if he were to arrive this month.

Speaking to Football League World, pundit Carlton Palmer has suggested that Roberts would be a "shrewd" bit of business by Leeds United, as he stated: "Connor would be a shrewd signing for Leeds, and his pals Ampadu and Rodon from the Welsh squad should help him hit the ground running. This would be a very, very good addition for Leeds United."

Now, one reporter has delivered a further update on market activity at Elland Road this window and where Leeds United could look to strengthen.

Leeds eye Byram upgrade…

According to Football Insider reporter Pete O'Rourke, Leeds United are keen to bring in a new left-back this window and will look to upgrade on Sam Byram, who is naturally a right-sided defender.

The 30-year-old has spent more or less the entire campaign on the left-hand side of Farke's backline. At the same time, Junior Firpo remains on the books at Elland Road, though he has struggled with injury concerns for much of the season.

Labelled "powerful" by journalist Alan Biggs, Byram has been a fantastic addition, considering he arrived for free in the summer and has made 21 appearances across all competitions this campaign, registering one goal and a solitary assist in the process (Byram statistics – Transfermarkt).

Byram will be a vital part of Leeds United's plans in the coming weeks and months; however, recruiting a natural to add competition in the left-back role should definitely be a priority at the club before the window closes.

South African players' body threatens CSA with legal action

The South African Cricketers’ Association addressed a letter to the board regarding alleged breaches of agreement related to CSA’s decision radically restructure domestic cricket

Liam Brickhill04-May-2019The South African Cricketers Association (SACA) has threatened legal action against Cricket South Africa (CSA) over alleged breaches of agreement related to CSA’s decision to radically restructure domestic cricket. From 2021, CSA is planning to scrap the franchise system, reverting to the provincial model in domestic cricket as part of austerity measures designed to offset projected losses of R 654 million (USD 45 million approx) over the next four years. But SACA has repeatedly expressed concerns over the plan, insisting that it had not been properly consulted or given the relevant financial information regarding the challenges CSA is facing.SACA, through its lawyers, addressed a letter to CSA on Friday detailing its grievances, with SACA saying its concerns over the restructuring exercise “have simply been ignored by CSA”.ALSO READ: Explainer on CSA’s austerity measures”We reiterate our concerns around the financial position and around a decision, which has significant consequences both for the game and the players, taken without regard to our agreements and without following the consultation process specifically provided for in our Recognition Agreement,” SACA president Omphile Ramela said.”SACA cares about the financial sustainability of the game, and this is not only about what happens next year but also about the years to come. Our concerns relating to this have simply been ignored by CSA.”We also care about ensuring the best possible domestic structure for the players and the game and believe that this should be the subject of proper consultation and agreement instead of there being a decision, which will have significant consequences, forced on us and the players.”SACA’s statement marks the latest episode in a spat that has rumbled on since CSA announced the restructuring plan in early April. The relationship between the two organisations hit a new low when SACA claimed that its chief executive Tony Irish had been barred from attending a meeting at which the changes to domestic cricket were discussed. While SACA’s latest move has made clear its willingness to take legal action against CSA, Irish said the organisation is still open to engaging CSA on the relevant issues.”Our lawyers have made it clear to CSA that its failure to comply with our agreements may well lead to legal action,” Irish said. “At the same time, we are open to finding responsible solutions to the financial challenges facing cricket and to ensuring the best outcomes from a cricket point of view. We have invited CSA to engage in mediation on the issues. If CSA fails to comply and does not accept our invitation to mediate, SACA will be compelled to take the legal route.”A CSA spokesperson, meanwhile, told ESPNcricinfo it was “unfortunate that SACA chose to issue a press release as a means of communicating with CSA.” The spokesperson added that no letter had yet been received as of Friday evening. “We have noted the same this Friday evening and will respond shortly.”

"Underrated" striker likened to Victor Osimhen wants Arsenal transfer

It's been reported this week that an "underrated" striker has his eyes on a move to Arsenal.

The strikers who Arsenal could sign

Widespread rumours have suggested that sporting director Edu and manager Mikel Arteta are eager to bring in a proven goalscorer and add more firepower.

Right now, Arsenal have just Eddie Nketiah and Gabriel Jesus to choose from as their natural goalscoring options, leading to interest in some of Europe's most prolific marksman.

Fabrizio Romano says Arsenal want £80m star who's "similar" to Douglas Luiz

Arteta is eyeing a new midfielder.

ByEmilio Galantini Dec 7, 2023

Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic is liked by Arsenal as one option, while some media sources have suggested that Napoli superstar Victor Osimhen could become a target for Arteta.

Another very enticing option for the Gunners is Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez. The Mexican is currently enjoying the season of his life with 18 goals in just 15 Eredivisie appearances so far, and some reports have stated that Arsenal are keen on signing Gimenez.

There are few candidates to shore up Arteta's attacking options, it would seem, but the one player who has been most regularly mentioned is Brentford star Ivan Toney.

Ivan Toney

The Englishman is expected to be back from his ban for alleged gambling breaches in mid-January, with Arsenal tipped as a very real landing spot in 2024. Arteta's side have also been urged to sign Toney by key Arsenal figureheads of past seasons, like former striker Ian Wright, who told the Stick to Football podcast that he's the last piece of the jigsaw.

“I believe that Arsenal in what we’re trying to do now – the margins are so small now – you cannot afford to miss those chances and not win those games," said Wright.

“The Toney links don’t go away because you can see that’s probably the last bit in the jigsaw. It’s obvious for everyone to see that this is the last piece. He will do it if it can be done.”

As per The Mirror, Arsenal may have been handed a boost in their pursuit of the 27-year-old.

Toney wants to join Arsenal in 2024

According to the outlet, and journalist Ryan Taylor, Toney is keen on a move to Arsenal next year amid Edu's hunt for a new striker. Little else is added beyond that bit of information, but Toney's eagerness to make the north London move could well hand them an advantage over competitors for his signature.

The striker, who scored 20 league goals last season, could seriously strengthen Arsenal's forward line with Football Transfers calling him a "similar" player to Osimhen.

Toney's been labelled "underrated" by Football Analyst Statman Dave as well. Brentford manager Thomas Frank is also a big fan of the forward, hailing his "remarkable" attributes.

“Ivan is amazing in many, many aspects,” Frank said.

“The way he copes with pressure and distractions is amazing. He’s been scoring goals, performing for the team and driving the team. He’s remarkable. I can only talk about the Ivan that I see every day around the place and he’s a fantastic person around the group."

Crystal Palace scouting “interesting” defender who could replace Marc Guehi

Crystal Palace are interested in a deal to bring an overseas defender to the Premier League to potentially replace Marc Guehi, according to a reliable journalist.

Marc Guehi linked with Palace exit

According to Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United have both made contact to register their interest in a deal for Guehi, who has been set a price tag of £60m, but there has recently been an update which is contrary to reports.

Eagles sources are now claiming that the centre-back leaving the club in January is looking impossible and that it is instead likely to happen at the end of the season, but regardless of when he departs, a replacement will still need to be found.

Crystal Palace eyeing "rapid" defender wanted by Spurs, Rangers & Newcastle

He’s been revered for his pace.

ByEmilio Galantini Nov 28, 2023

Valencia’s Cristhian Mosquera has emerged as a possible target, with the 19-year-old having worked his way up through his club’s various youth ranks to get promoted to their first-team, where he’s so far made a total of 26 senior appearances to date (Transfermarkt – Mosquera statistics).

The Spain youth international still has just under two years remaining on his deal at the Mestalla Stadium (Valencia contracts), but that hasn’t stopped Roy Hodgson from keeping tabs on his situation as he looks to make an official move in the new year.

Crystal Palace eyeing Mosquera

Writing in his Patreon report, Alan Nixon revealed that Crystal Palace are keen on Mosquera and have indeed placed him onto their shortlist of defensive targets should they be forced to cash in on Guehi in January.

Quoted by We Are Palace, he said: “Crystal Palace are putting Valencia’s top young centre half Cristhian Mosquera on their list of replacements for England’s Marc Guehi.

"The strong defender, who is also good on the ball, was checked out by Palace last week as they prepare for Guehi to move on for a huge fee. Guehi is likely to leave the Eagles next summer but if a massive bid came in next month then they could have to scramble to find someone new.”

Valencia defenderCristhian Mosquera.

Mosquera would be an "interesting" recruit

Standing at 6 foot 2, Mosquera provides a real physical presence at the heart of Valencia’s backline which he’s proven so far this season by averaging 3.4 clearances and 1.6 tackles per game in La Liga (WhoScored – Mosquera statistics).

The Alicante native is also extremely calm and composed in possession, recording an 88.2% pass success rate, which is higher than any of the regular features have managed to achieve this term at Selhurst Park (WhoScored – Crystal Palace statistics). It seems, then, that he'd actually be an upgrade on the current options in terms of ball progression from the back.

Considering he’s only 19, Mosquera is a really “interesting” prospect, as per football talent scout Jacek Kulig, and with his versatility to even operate as a right-back, he possesses all of the qualities that could make him the perfect long-term successor to Guehi.

The 12 best Liverpool chants and songs (with lyrics)

There are few cities in Europe that better embody both football and music as much as Liverpool does. With Merseyside the birthplace of The Beatles and home to two historic football clubs in Everton and their neighbours at Anfield, it's natural that, over the years, the two variables have interlinked to evoke a certain romanticism.

For the Reds, they have flourished, with noteworthy songwriters like Jamie Webster ensuring there is always time for a singalong in the Kop and each of the other three stands.

In this article, Football FanCast aims to delve into the top 12 Liverpool chants of all time, with a mix of old and new gatekeeping the current golden era from taking every position. Each entry is rated based on meaning, context, and outright catchiness!

13 Honourable mentions

Before starting the list, it's only fair to give an honourable mention to those chants that missed out by a whisker.

Certainly, this was a gruelling task trying to name only 12, so much so that we changed the list from 10 to 12 entries and still shed a few anxious tears when trying to decide which mantras were dropped to the sidelines.

Mo Salah and Virgil Van Dijk's chants both missed out from the Jamie Webster era, while the addition of 'One Kiss' from Dua Lipa, which has become an honourary Liverpool anthem in recent years, was toyed with back and forth.

But although it's still the only pop song to make middle-aged (and over) Scousers dance around like it's the 80s, the decision was made that, since no lyric had been tailored to the Reds, it couldn't be counted.

Other chants unfortunate to be excluded but deserve a place in Anfield legend are Luis Suárez's Depeche Mode redraft, "Bring on Yer Internazionale", and the "Attack, Attack, Attack" squall that inspired some of the greatest comebacks in Anfield's illustrious history.

12 I'm So Glad, Jürgen is a Red…

To the tune of The Beatles' 'I Feel Fine'

Jurgen-Klopp

Lyrics: "Jürgen said to me you know, We’ll win the Premier League you know, He said so. I’m in love with him & I feel fine. I’m so glad that Jürgen is a Red, I’m so glad he delivered what he said."

There aren't many others that deserve the keys to the city more than Jürgen Norbert Klopp. In a non-footballing sense, among the first alternatives that come to mind are the Beatles. So it's only right that the two combine to bring about the first of 12 chants that help forge the notion of Anfield being the Reds' 12th man.

Klopp says he hates the chant, palming away any praise and encouraging Anfield's regulars to focus their affection towards the players on the pitch. But it doesn't stop the Kop from making certain that the manager knows his place in Liverpool.

Where Jurgen Klopp ranks among the oldest managers in the top 4 divisions

After so many years of Sir Alex Ferguson trying to knock the Reds off their perch with Manchester United, Klopp's rule has seen Liverpool take back their throne in style, and so it's only right that a chant attuned to the city's best manager since the days of Shankly and Paisley made the list, especially given its Beatles connection.

11 Oh, He Wears The Number 20…

Diogo Jota's got his own song

Lyrics: "Oh, he wears the number 20, He will take us to victory, And when he’s running down the left wing, He’ll cut inside and score for LFC. He’s a lad from Portugal, Better than Figo don’t you know, Oh, his name is Diogo!"

So many players have been and gone, conquered and vanquished – which makes becoming a Liverpool legend incredibly difficult. But although Diogo Jota's £41m investment raised eyebrows in 2020, the Portuguese forward has repaid that sizeable show of faith with interest.

He is the latest Reds player to be lustrated by the Kop with a chant, with his 47 goals and 15 assists in 125 Liverpool games making him a worthy candidate to be held in such high esteem.

In the Jamie Webster era, Anfield has been blessed with a mill of an inexhaustible supply of great terrace songs. Most recently, it is this one that has captured the heart of the city. Jota's gold-standard performances marry his earnest desire to fully digest and inherit Liverpool's culture to reward him with a belter.

10 Merry Christmas, Everton…

To the tune of Shakin' Stevens' 'Merry Christmas Everyone'

Lyrics: "Mane's scoring, All around us, Kopites singing, having fun, It's the season, love and understanding, Merry Christmas, Everton…"

Every club has a Christmas song. Most of the time, it tends to take form to the tune of Michael Bublé's 'Winter Wonderland' or BAND AID's 'Do They Know It's Christmas?'. However, although Liverpool's choice opts for another parody – this time a Shakin' Stevens' classic – it is often the Kop's originality that prevails over other fanbases' attempts to create an atmosphere.

After Sadio Mané scored in injury time back in December 2016 to secure a 1-0 Goodison Park victory for the Reds, a new winter classic was born. The Senegalese winger would go on to finish his Liverpool career with six goals in seven Merseyside derbies – showing beyond doubt why it was he who deserved to play the starring role in an anti-Everton chant over anybody else.

Whenever the Christmas lights are switched on, it provides the Anfield faithful with the perfect opportunity to warm their throats up with the best of a trilogy of Merseyside derby chants (the others being 'Tell Yer Ma, Yer Ma' and 'Since 1995…') loud enough for it to be heard on the other side of Stanley Park.

9 Steven Gerrard Is Our Captain

It's only right Mr Liverpool features among the greats

Lyrics: "Steven Gerrard is our captain, Steven Gerrard is a red, Steven Gerrard plays for Liverpool, A Scouser born and bred. Dur dur dur dur dur dur dur dur (Repeat x3).

"And then one night in Turkey, It was 21 years since Rome, With a Liverbird upon his chest, He brought the cup back home, Dur dur dur dur dur dur dur dur (Repeated X3)."

During a time when Liverpool were suffering a hangover from their domestic highpoint throughout a time Manchester United and Chelsea were finding their feet on the biggest stages, Steven Gerrard proved to be Captain Fantastic, Mr Liverpool. He wore the Liverbird upon his chest with pride and dragged a below-par Reds side to nine trophies, including a fifth Champions League title, to remind the rest of the country of his club's status as the Kings of Europe.

He proved he was a true Scouser and there may never be another like him. For his efforts in Istanbul alone, he is deserving of an A-list song to solemnize the dizzying heights he captained the club to. If there was ever a footballer you could count on to make a difference and win games by himself, it was Gerrard, and this chant, despite not being the most popular in his discography, perfectly symbolises his paladin runes.

8 Sí, Señor

Nothing quite like this Bobby banger

Lyrics: "There's something that the Kop wants you to know, the best in the world, his name is Bobby Firmino. Our number nine, Give him the ball, and he'll score every time. Sí, Señor, pass the ball to Bobby and he'll score.

Up until his departure this summer, 'Sí, Señor' was a staple matchday salute to Roberto (or Bobby) Firmino that included arguably the catchiest chorus of the list. Firmino, joining from Hoffenheim in 2015, was a striker that realised the meaning of 'The Liverpool Way' from day dot, and he played an instrumental role in taking that way of thinking into its next step of evolution.

Before the Brazilian arrived on Merseyside, the Reds were struggling to reclaim past zeniths. But when he departed in 2023, the archetypal Klopp student, who played such a vital yet downplayed role in Liverpool's modern system, left a legacy of a Premier League, FA Cup, Champions League, League Cup, Club World Cup, Super Cup, and a rite of passage to touch the 'This is Anfield' sign to the orchestra of his very own Latin rendition.

7 The Torres Bounce

To the tune of 'When Johnny Comes Marching Home'

Lyrics: "His Armband proved he was a red, Torres! Torres! You'll Never Walk Alone it said, Torres! Torres! We bought the lad from sunny Spain, He gets the ball he scores again, Fernando Torres! Liverpool's number 9!"

From one great Liverpool number 9 to another. Fernando Torres was the breath of fresh air every Kopite had dreamt for after a long and tiresome period of nobody doing their worst to stake a claim as Anfield's talisman to bring them back to the glory days.

Andriy Voronin, El-Hadji Diouf and Florent Sinama-Pongolle all came before Torres, setting the bar pretty low for incoming strikers. But whatever the Liverpool fans expected from their new Spaniard leading the line, the Atletico Madrid man transcended presupposition.

Finishing his Liverpool journey with 81 goals in 142 games, Torres quickly became adored by the Kop, with his Old Trafford demolitions and consistent goal-getting escapades revitalising the Reds in their penultimate nearly-men episode before Klopp took charge.

Other clubs up and down the United Kingdom have since tailored lyrics to the song he was given in the memorable 2008/09 season to their own assets, but none are nearly as good as this one.

6 We Won It In Madrid…

To the tune of The Beautiful South's 'Rotterdam'

Lyrics: "We've been to PSG and Napoli, Belgrade and Germany, When we went the Allianz, Liverpool scored three. Porto, Barcelona, Who the f*ck yer try'na kid? Cos we're the mighty Liverpool, We won it in Madrid, We won it in Madrid."

When your European success is as indomitable as Liverpool's, it's only right that they boast about it whenever rival opposition make their way through the Anfield tunnel. They've won the Champions League six times, the Europa League three times, and they've added a further four Super Cups to their continental trophy cabinet to extend their lead as England's most successful football club overseas.

In this chant, to the tune of The Beautiful South's earworm 'Rotterdam', the Kop relives memories of their Champions League trail to Kyiv and Madrid in 2018 and 2019, which finished with the hoisting of their sixth European Cup.

The melody was curated as a replacement for the Istanbul versions that outlined their fifth triumph back in 2005, so it's plausible that this one will stand the test of time until a permissible seventh Old Big Ears is upraised.

5 Every Other Saturday

A timeless classic

Lyrics (excerpt): "Every other Saturday's me half-day off, And it's off to the match I go, I like to take a stroll along the Anfield Road, Me and me old pal Joe. I like to see the lasses with their red scarves on, I like to hear the Kopites roar, But I don't have to tell you that best of all, Is when we see Liverpool sco-o-o-ore! sco-o-o-ore!"

What starts as a simple recounting of a matchday up in the north west – a description likely to resonate with many – eventually turns into another way of showing off their history and ends with a reverence to the great King Kenny Dalglish.

''Every Other Saturday' has been sung since the 70s, and it is unlikely that it will ever cease. The song excellently captures the meaning of a matchday to the red half of Merseyside and urges the Kopites to approach a singalong with more melody than other entries in this list.

4 Allez, Allez, Allez

The 80s-inspired anthem sweeping terraces across the land

Lyrics: "We've conquered all of Europe, We're never going to stop. From Paris down to Turkey, We've won the f*cking lot. Bob Paisley and Bill Shankly, The Fields of Anfield Road. We are loyal supporters, And we come from Liverpool. Allez, Allez, Allez (Repeated x4)."

Jamie Webster's greatest musical achievement was taking the snippets of this song, commonly sung around stadiums in Italy and further afield, and make it what it is today. Whereas it was first sung by a smattering of Liverpool supporters in Porto, Webster, a Scouse musician revered for his 'BOSS Nights' in the city, opted to flesh out the verses and make sure the wider fanbase could join in.

"I’d heard murmurs of it at Anfield before," he told the New York Times. "But in Porto, there was a group of lads singing it. People didn't know the words, but they were trying to follow them. I wanted to get it out there."

Again, it is another song that aims to illustrate the club's glittering history sitting on the continent's throne. And again, it succeeds in shaking the seams of Anfield's four walls on European nights when bellowed at full tilt.

In the video below, it's not hard to see why 'Allez, Allez, Allez' has earned its permanent place in the Anfield songbook.

Mujeeb Ur Rahman leads the way as Afghanistan snuff out Ireland again

ICC

Once again on their 2018 tour of Ireland, Afghanistan’s bowlers asserted their might over the home team’s batsmen, to leave them stumbling to a 29-run defeat in the opening ODI in Belfast. This is hardly the first time it has happened – both games in the T20I series followed the same script. And yet, this defeat will hurt Ireland, not least because their bowlers had done splendidly to shut the doors on a late surge when Afghanistan had batted. Five wickets for 16 runs in the last seven overs had left Ireland with 228 to get – a chaseable target on most surfaces against most bowling attacks. But throughout this tour, Afghanistan, with the variety and skill in their spin-bowling arsenal, have shown they aren’t like most bowling attacks.Rashid Khan wasn’t even much of a factor for most of the chase – he took the last two wickets, both in the 49th over – and yet, Afghanistan hardly broke a sweat in their defence. By the time Mujeeb Ur Rahman, their best bowler of the day, was done with his quota, the required rate had shot up to eight an over. On a pitch as treacherously slow as this one, it was a done deal. The only period during which Ireland looked like they were on top was in the first over, when Paul Stirling found the boundary twice. And even then, one of them was off an inside edge. Mujeeb came on at the other end and conceded just three, and straightaway the choke was on.It meant Ireland had try and to capitalise on marginal errors, a tough ask on an uncooperative surface for batsmen. The batsmen had to force their shots, and Stirling and William Porterfield both fell caught behind trying to do just that. Those early wickets were just the catalyst Afghanistan needed to choke the opposition out. The avoidable run-out of Niall O’Brien only made things harder for Ireland. At 54 for 3 after 18 overs, Afghanistan were ready to seize control. Rashid hadn’t even come on yet. When he did eventually, in the 23rd over, Ireland were in the middle of their best partnership of the innings, between Andy Balbirnie and Simi Singh.Simi had walked out with the clear plan of upsetting the spinners’ line by taking big strides across and sweeping from well outside off stump. Not only did it give him some cushion against the lbw, it kept Ireland’s score ticking over. But when he fell, it was to a straight-bat shot, Mohammad Nabi’s offbreak bowling him off his inside edge.Balbirnie fought on to compile a gritty half-century before top-edging a sweep off Mujeeb to short fine leg. At the end of that over, the 34th, Ireland’s required rate was 6.12; by the time Mujeeb was done, eight overs later, it had shot up to 8.12.When Afghanistan batted, Ireland alternated between sharp and sloppy. Hazratullah Zazai, who had pulverized Ireland in the T20Is, was dropped by Stirling at second slip off the seventh ball of the innings. But luckily for Ireland, it didn’t cost them much.In extremely windy, almost stormy conditions, their bowlers did superbly to run in and hit the deck hard, causing Afghanistan discomfort with the short ball. One such delivery accounted for Zazai, who failed to get on top of the bounce and sent a leading edge to cover. In an early sign of the two-paced nature of the surface, each of the first three wickets arrived via the leading edge. But after coming out on top of the early exchanges, Ireland slackened, allowing the middle order to settle in. Gulbadin Naib and Rahmat Shah began the repair work with a 53-run third-wicket stand. Naib added a further 77 with Hashmatullah Shahidi on his way to a half-century.Naib fell to a dodgy lbw call in the 36th over, the ball from Boyd Rankin seeming to hit him quite high on the back thigh. Around then, Ireland began pulling things back. Afghanistan seemed all too content to knock the ball around and wait for a loose over. Ireland’s bowlers kept them waiting, and Afghanistan collected just 16 runs between overs 35 and 40.This wasn’t the typical one-day surface that would produce 100 runs in the last 10 overs, even if a team had wickets in hand, and Afghanistan found that out the hard way. Attempts at acceleration were short-lived, lasting no more than a few deliveries. By the time Shahidi had brought up a well-compiled half-century, the slide was well underway, as Afghanistan went from 197 for 4 to 213 for 9. But where Ireland’s bowlers were excellent in the early and closing stages of the innings, Afghanistan’s bowlers were relentless throughout, and it proved the difference.
