Arsenal: £110k-p/w dud with fewer touches than Raya had a ‘disaster’ vs Spurs

Arsenal continued their unbeaten start to the season on Sunday afternoon but once the full time whistle blew in the north London derby, it didn't feel like that. In fact, it felt like a defeat.

Fans, players and coaching staff alike were left dejected having only taken one point from their game with Spurs.

The Gunners were electrifying in the opening half an hour of the game but would only come away from proceedings with a 2-2 draw.

Bukayo Saka's deflected effort, later adjudged to have been an own goal by Cristian Romero opened proceedings before Heung-min Son steered home from close range as the break was approaching.

Saka was again at the heart of proceedings in the second half, firing home a penalty after the aforementioned Romero was involved again, this time being penalised for a handball.

However, Son once again stepped up when it mattered as just moments later Ange Postecoglou's rejuvenated outfit equalised for a second time.

For Mikel Arteta, it was a hugely costly error from Jorginho, a substitute for the injured Declan Rice, that was the deciding moment.

What happened to Declan Rice against Spurs?

The £105m summer signing has been nothing short of phenomenal this term, proving himself to be a real ball-winning monster in the middle of the park.

His ability to make a recovery is second to very few, so when he didn't appear for the second half, alarm bells rang.

Surely Arteta wasn't bringing off the club's record signing at half time in their most important game of the season? It turns out there was a reason.

Rice was restricted to the bench due to a calf problem that had to be strapped up. The hope is that he won't be on the sidelines for an extended period.

Indeed, the club's injury troubles are beginning to mount now. Rice's midfield colleague in Thomas Partey has been out for a few weeks, while Gabriel Martinelli hobbled off a week ago against Everton and Leandro Trossard sustained an injury in training.

What did Jorginho do wrong against Spurs?

The injury blow to Rice was alarming but had he stayed on the pitch, it's likely Arsenal would be walking away from the contest with all three points.

Saka had only just put Arteta's side in front for a second time before straight from kick-off, Jorginho lost the ball to James Maddison.

The Italian got the ball caught under his feet and as he tried to play out, was robbed of possession.

Only William Saliba was left behind the former Chelsea star, but not even a man of his defensive quality could stop the Spurs attack.

Maddison raced through the centre and then played in Son who cooly slotted past David Raya in the Arsenal goal.

The result was perhaps cruel on the Spaniard who had made a remarkable save, straight from the David Seaman textbook in the first half, to deny Brennan Johnson.

Arteta was quick to rush to the defence of his January signing after the game, suggesting he still loved Jorginho, but there will be few fans feeling the same affection.

Filling in for Rice is never going to be an easy task. As soon as he went off the lack of physicality and indeed the alarming space in the middle of the pitch was laid bare.

The £110k-per-week midfielder tried his best to get on the ball, making 38 touches, just four fewer than the ball-playing Raya despite 45 fewer minutes on the pitch.

That said, he could only win 50% of his defensive duels. Rice, by comparison, didn't have his best game in that regard with a 60% win rate, but his mere presence did enough to provoke Maddison into playing a deeper role. He had no such difficulty against Jorginho, as he pushed forward more often, notably for the second equaliser.

One Arsenal journalist, Connor Humm, even went as far as to describe his performance as a "disaster".

That was rather apt for a shoddy performance in which Jorginho truly struggled with the pace of the game. Against a side who enjoy less possession, the Italy international will be no problem at all. However, in this type of match, his lack of energy was and will be a huge concern.

Man United Executive Flies Overseas To Meet Key £30m Target

As the Manchester United pursuit of Sofyan Amrabat heats up on transfer deadline day, director of football negotiations Matt Hargreaves has reportedly flown to Italy.

What is the latest transfer news on Man United and Sofyan Amrabat?

The Red Devils have been chasing the Fiorentina midfielder for some time but don't appear to be able to pay full price for the player.

Indeed, as per The Times, Man United "cannot afford to meet Fiorentina’s £30 million asking price" but they are trying to loan the Morocco international instead.

That same report notes how Amrabat himself doesn't even know what the future holds as he said this week: “If I go away, I don’t know . . . maybe I could stay."

As per The Athletic, the Premier League outfit did make a €2m (£1.7m) loan bid but it was unsurprisingly turned down by Fiorentina.

Read the latest Man United transfer news HERE…

But in a fresh update, shared by David Ornstein on Twitter, "Manchester United director of football negotiations Matt Hargreaves has flown to Italy" to try and complete a deal. However, there is "no agreement" between the clubs for the 27-year-old as of yet.

Interestingly enough, there were reports in the Manchester Evening News about a private jet which has been booked from Florence to arrive at Manchester Airport on Friday afternoon at 12.52pm (UK time).

That article also noted that: "United have not denied the possibility they have arranged the private jet".

And while, after Ornstein's latest update, it might seem unlikely that another flight would be booked quite so soon after Hargreaves' has arrived in Italy, as it is a private flight, it is possible the scheduled time could be pushed back to allow for protracted negotiations.

Now, in a further update from Fabrizio Romano, the player is "on his way in order to undergo medical tests as new Man Utd player after agreement reached."

How many goals has Sofyan Amrabat scored?

As per The Athletic, Hargreaves is a former executive at Adidas and was only appointed to his role at United in March, starting work this summer. So this will be one of the first major deals he would have been involved with for the club.

With that in mind, it will be interesting to see if he returns to Manchester alone, or if he can successfully complete a loan deal for the 27-year-old midfielder.

In Amrabat, United certainly won't be getting an attacking player. After all, in 107 games at his current club, he has scored just one goal, while also picking up only one assist. In fact, across his entire senior club career, he has only netted five times having made 228 appearances for four different teams.

However, the Red Devils should be landing a pretty feisty defensive midfielder if they can get this deal across the line. Indeed, during the 2022 World Cup, Moroccan journalist Amine El Amri called the player a "raging bull" when speaking to TalkSPORT.

"Sofyan Amrabat is a great footballer in addition to being a raging bull," they said. "I’m trying to be as objective as I can, but I think he’s been the best midfielder in this World Cup.

“I have nothing but respect for guys like Luka Modric, Marcelo Brozovic and Rodrigo De Paul and many others, but I think he’s been absolutely the best player in midfield in this World Cup.”

Gurbani leads Vidarbha towards maiden Ranji final

AFP

Vidarbha’s extraordinary resolve and single-mindedness put them within inches of their maiden Ranji Trophy final, as their classic against Karnataka headed towards a stunning conclusion. With unshakeable confidence, supreme skill and tremendous discipline, Vidarbha’s pacers brought Karnataka’s bullish batting order to its knees to all but knock out the eight-time champions on the fourth day at Eden Gardens. At stumps, Karnataka were seven down in pursuit of 198, still requiring an improbable 87 runs. And it was Rajneesh Gurbani, Vidarbha’s find of the season, who once again ripped through Karnataka. Siddhesh Neral’s double-strike had given Vidarbha an opening, but Gurbani pushed the door wide open. He ran through the heart of Karnataka’s middle order with 4 for 35 that included the game-changing scalps of Karun Nair and CM Gautam. Not once did Karnataka look in control of the chase: an unprecedented instance for a team that has racked up totals of over 400 six times in eight matches this season. Perhaps critically, Karnataka made that one mistake that Vidarbha were wise to avoid when they batted, by going into extreme caution after the loss of early wickets, at one point scoring a solitary run in 27 balls.Throughout, Karnataka’s batsmen were found wanting on several fronts, not covering the line of the delivery, failing to get entirely forward and not getting to the pitch. Such lapses made an appearance early, when Mayank Agarwal, the season’s highest run-scorer, fell to Umesh Yadav’s electric reflexes in the third over. Having closed the face of his bat to one that had straightened, Agarwal popped a leading edge to Umesh’s right, who got down in an instant and stuck out his right hand.Dega Nischal, Karnataka’s promising No. 3, lived a charmed life. First, Akshay Wadkar reprieved him by fluffing a simple catch down the leg side. Nischal survived a second time when Paschim Pathak turned down a huge appeal for leg before when Gurbani cut one back into the batsman and seemed to have him plumb in front of middle and leg.Even R Samarth, whose front-foot game is characterised by assuredness, pushed and prodded tentatively on numerous occasions. It cost him when a skiddy inswinger from Neral hit him dead in front of middle stump. Five balls later, Nischal played a shot he will rue for a long time: pushing at a sixth-stump delivery and edging to the keeper. With Karnataka three down for 40, Faiz Fazal brought back his premier paceman, Umesh. The one trick Fazal missed was in hesitating to place a third slip, perhaps guarding himself against the low target to defend. The flaw was exposed when Umesh found Karun Nair’s outside edge that went past second slip and gully. Fazal immediately closed the gap, but Umesh made a fuller offering on the pads next ball. He continued to be erratic and was easily the least impressive of Vidarbha’s pacers.Usually firm-footed, Nair continued to live on outside edges and streaky boundaries. Ill-judged singles and edges became routine as Karnataka showed signs of cracking under pressure. But one way or the other, Nair and Gautam, like they did in the first innings, began to steady Karnataka and took them to 69 for 3 at the tea break. The post-tea passage began in an all-too-familiar manner, Gautam finding an edged four through third man, before Nair crunched an imperious cover-drive off Neral. And then, Gurbani took centrestage. In his first over after tea, Gurbani had Nair poking at one that jagged off the seam and took the edge. Stuart Binny was trapped on his second ball in front of middle with one that shaped into him. Pathak adjudged Gautam to have tickled one to the keeper too, much to the disappointment of the batsman. Having managed bounce, swing in the air and movement off the deck, Gurbani then found reverse swing that had K Gowtham playing all over a delivery that was angled into him, being adjudged lbw for 1. With each wicket that he took, Gurbani’s celebrations grew increasingly ecstatic, and Karnataka’s shoulders sagged as they slipped from 81 for 3 to 104 for 7.Despite Gurbani’s heroics, the contributions of Aditya Sarwate weren’t forgotten. Karnataka soared early in the day, taking out Vidarbha’s overnight batsmen Ganesh Satish and Akshay Wadkar in the morning.Wadkar and Satish had begun well, smartly extending Vidarbha’s lead through singles. But an incisive spell from Binny, who kept probing batsmen and inviting errors, turned the heat on Vidarbha. He struck first ball after his introduction, and it was to a poor shot from Wadkar, who followed the line loosely of an away-going delivery.Satish, Vidarbha’s biggest hope, was bounced out by a fiery Abhimanyu Mithun, and when Akshay Wakhare played at a Binny outswinger, Vidarbha had lost three wickets for six runs.Karnataka did just about everything right on the field, with Mithun’s pace, Binny’s swing, Vinay’s accuracy, some outstanding slip catching, and tidy ground fielding. But Sarwate stalled their charge with a fighting half-century and added 68 runs for the last two wickets. With the field spread out – at one point, Karnataka had as many as six fielders at the boundary – he capitalised by pinching singles.Though he farmed the strike for the most part, the big shots ensued when he turned it over. Umesh played the biggest of them all when he shoveled Binny over wide long-on. A crunching late cut behind square gave Sarwate his fifty as every run, every four, even a tidy forward defence drew rousing cheers from the Vidarbha dressing room as they continued to believe. By the end of it all, it had stood them in good stead.

Nottingham Forest eyeing "simply amazing" transfer move

Nottingham Forest have entered the race to sign a defender; however, he also has options elsewhere as his next career steps come into focus, according to Daily Express journalist Ryan Taylor, so it may not be easy.

So, where do Nottingham Forest fit in?

As per The Daily Express, Nottingham Forest entered the race to sign Sutalo last week after their top defensive target, Roma's Roger Ibanez, received an offer from Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli and has since gone on to try his luck in the Middle East, pending official announcement.

West Ham United have emerged as another option in the Premier League for the Croatia international, who has caught the eye after his consistent performances in his homeland for Dinamo Zagreb.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano dropped an update revealed that Eredivisie giants Ajax are also keen on the 23-year-old and have gone as far as submitting a 'new bid' for the stopper, as the Italian journalist stated on Twitter X: "EXCL: Ajax submitted new bid for Josip Sutalo, €20m [£17.2m] fixed fee plus add-ons to sign Croatian centre back. Ajax now confident to get it done but want an answer in two days — or they will move on different target as new CB."

He then added a second piece of information that could prove to be critical in negotiations, indicating that Ajax are 'increasingly confident' of sealing a transfer for Sutalo and that they are looking to wrap proceedings up in the next 48 hours.

Sutalo, who has been hailed as "simply amazing", has started the 2023/24 campaign on a strong footing for Dinamo Zagreb despite speculation surrounding his future, making five appearances for his current employers across all competitions, with four of them yielding clean sheets, as per Transfermarkt.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Daily Express journalist Taylor has complemented Nottingham Forest's transfer strategy and confirmed that Sutalo has been evaluated at the City Ground.

Taylor stated: "I think it's pretty clear that they've not done what they did last year, which I think is going to suit them better.

"But, at the same time, I do see Forest as a team that probably needs a few more signings. There is still talk that Brennan Johnson could maybe go, which is a little bit of a concern.

"But Sutalo is one that they're going to look at now. They're in talks with Dinamo Zagreb because it looks like Roger Ibanez is going to go to Al-Ahli."

What next for Nottingham Forest?

Nottingham Forest have been busy in the transfer market under Steve Cooper and four signings have come through the door at the City Ground in the form of Anthony Elanga, Matt Turner and Ola Aina, alongside Chris Wood's move from Newcastle United being made permanent, as per Transfermarkt.

According to RMC Sport journalist Fabrice Hawkins, Nottingham Forest tried to sign Youssouf Fofana from Ligue 1 outfit AS Monaco this summer; however, they were knocked back in their attempts to land the midfielder who has options elsewhere.

brennan-johnson-transfer-gossip-nottingham-forest-tottenham-hotspur-postecoglou-harvey-barnes

Back in July, The Daily Mail reported that Nottingham Forest star striker Brennan Johnson could be considered as an alternative to Harry Kane by Tottenham Hotspur if the England international were to decide to depart the north London side this window.

The Tricky Trees kick off their Premier League campaign away to Arsenal on Saturday and will be hoping to give themselves a solid platform to build on following their survival heroics last term, as per Sky Sports.

Nevill returns to Sixers on multi-year deal

Wicketkeeper Peter Nevill will return to the Sydney Sixers for the 2017-18 Big Bash League after five seasons with the Melbourne Renegades. Nevill had been part of the Sixers side that won the inaugural BBL in 2011-12, and will return to the franchise on a multi-year deal.Nevill’s New South Wales team-mate, fast bowler Sean Abbott, has also committed to the Sixers.”It was a great opportunity to be back playing with people that I’ve played with extensively at NSW,” Nevill told “One of my fondest cricket memories was winning the BBL 01 title with the Sixers and I’d love to win another one with the same guys. My best mates play for NSW and the Sixers so the ability to play all season with through, through state and then BBL cricket was a real attraction.”The Sixers have a great environment, given the nucleus is similar to NSW, and I love the culture. Another factor was being able to spend the festive period at home in Sydney.”Nevill played 27 matches for the Renegades over five seasons, scoring 186 runs at an average of 13.28 and a strike rate of 97. Last season, he suffered a fractured jaw after a freak accident during a BBL game against the Adelaide Strikers, where he was struck in the face by Brad Hodge’s bat.In the 2016-17 domestic season, Nevill ended up as one of the top-scorers for NSW in the Sheffield Shield, with 625 runs in nine matches, including three hundreds and a fifty.Nevill has not played for Australia since the Hobart Test against South Africa last year. The innings-and-80-run defeat in that match – which was the side’s fifth consecutive Test loss – forced the Australian selectors to revamp the side and Nevill lost his place to Matthew Wade.

South Africa sweat over struggling Philander

After battling illness last week, Philander has now been struck with back spasms on the eve of the final Test at Old Trafford and faces a fitness test

Firdose Moonda at Old Trafford03-Aug-2017A last-minute call will be taken on Vernon Philander’s availability for the final Test against England at Old Trafford after he began to suffer with lower-back spasms on the eve of the must-win game. Philander has only just recovered from the viral infection which limited his participation in the third Test and when he spoke on Wednesday he said had put the illness behind him and was “looking forward” to having more of a say in the upcoming fixture, especially as he felt his intensity was missed at The Oval.South Africa are similarly anxious to have a fully-fit Philander in their XI as they look to square the series and go home with something to show for what has been an otherwise disappointing three-month tour. After the third Test, captain Faf du Plessis cited Philander’s illness, which resulted in him only bowling 32 overs out of 183.1 at The Oval, as one of the key reasons for South Africa’s defeat. Before the fourth Test, du Plessis elaborated on how Philander’s fitness, or lack thereof, will impact on team selection.”Vernon at 100% fit means we can look at playing three seamers and play seven batters. Vernon at 90% doesn’t mean you can play three seamers because you don’t want to be in a position where you have a seamer break down and then you only have two bowlers, because that is basically the Test match over right there,” du Plessis said. “The one occasion where we managed to pull a miracle off was in Australia with two seamers, but normally you can’t win a Test match with two bowlers. If he is not 100% fit, it’s important to look at having four seamers.”The match du Plessis was referring to was played in Perth last November when Dale Steyn broke his shoulder. Then, Philander, Kagiso Rabada and Keshav Maharaj made up a three-man attack and were able to bowl Australia out with a lead of just two runs in the first innings. South Africa’s current crop of Rabada, Morne Morkel and Maharaj were unable to replicate that at The Oval, making Philander an even more crucial member of the side now than he was nine months ago. Not only is he the container-in-chief, but Philander’s runs have been also vital to South Africa, which is why he is key to balance. If Philander can operate at his optimal, South Africa seem to be pondering lengthening the batting line-up, which would likely mean the inclusion of Theunis de Bruyn ahead of Chris Morris, in order to make up for the lapses of their top five. Should they play an XI that includes de Bruyn and not Morris, Philander will have to bowl more overs. But if Philander’s workload needs to be monitored, then South Africa will need Morris to make up those overs and so can’t play de Bruyn. That means Philander will bat at No. 7, with Morris at No. 8, placing extra pressure on both of them to produce with bat and ball. This is the fourth time in the series Philander has carried an ailment. He went into the Lord’s Test on the back of an ankle injury sustained during a county stint with Sussex which prevented him from playing in the tour match. During that game, he was struck on the hand though that did not result in any serious damage apart from a dropped catch. Last week, Philander was laid low by a stomach bug which quickly escalated into a viral infection and now there is a back problem.Philander will undergo a fitness test on Thursday afternoon but South Africa will wait to see how feels on Friday morning before making a final decision.

Wolves: Lopetegui Could Now Sign "Monster" £17m-rated Moutinho Replacement

Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly eyeing Real Betis midfielder Guido Rodriguez, as Julen Lopetegui seeks a midfield rebuild this summer.

The Spaniard bid farewell to Portuguese duo Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho this window, and will now look to find reinforcements to fill the void left by the former Molineux maestros.

Could Wolves sign Guido Rodriguez?

As reported by journalist Cesar Luis Merlo this week, Wolves are eyeing the LaLiga gem, who remains under contract at Betis until next summer.

Merlo confirmed the Old Gold’s interest in the 29-year-old midfielder, claiming that negotiations are ‘underway’ between the two clubs, over the player valued around £17m by FootballTransfers.

While he added that the deal isn’t close to being finalised, the Midlands outfit's interest comes at a time when Betis may prefer a sale than for the player to depart as a free agent next year.

How good is Guido Rodriguez?

It’s integral for Lopetegui to identify a sufficient replacement for the departed duo Neves and Moutinho, who were key figures in Wolves’ journey in the Premier League.

The Spaniard could land the perfect solution to the two exits in obtaining Rodriguez, who was identified as a “monster” by analyst Marcus Bring for his exploits in LaLiga.

Signed by Betis from Mexican side America back in the 2020 winter window, the Argentine could be on the move this summer, with a move to the Premier League a possibility.

Heralded for his defensive contributions, the midfielder could be the ideal replacement for Moutinho, who closed the lid on his five-year stay in the Midlands at the expiration of his contract at the end of last season.

While the long-serving 36-year-old veteran was primarily deployed in central midfield rather than the deeper areas that Rodriguez inhabits in Spain, the averages recorded by the Argentine last term suggested that he could be a sufficient ball-playing replacement.

As per FBref, the 29-year-old maintained a pass completion rate of 86.7% in LaLiga last season, as well as making an average of 4.17 final third passes per 90 to showcase his assured presence in the central channel.

Moutinho recorded similar averages to the World Cup winner, maintaining a completion rate of 80.4% in the Premier League and averaging 5.31 final third passes per 90.

Their numbers signify that the Betis enforcer could be a like-for-like trade for Lopetegui’s side, as a player with similar efficiency in distribution.

The most prominent area of Rodriguez’s game is his defensive contributions, averaging a monstrous 3.60 tackles per 90 in LaLiga, ranking him in the top 2% of midfielders in the league, via FBref.

Moutinho fell short of the 29-year-old machine in such areas, averaging 2.58 tackles for Wolves, as well as recording 0.91 interceptions to the Betis star’s 1.32 per 90.

Possessing the innate balance between defensive and distribution strengths in the engine room, Lopetegui could fill the vacancy left by the Portuguese veteran in the middle of the park.

It’s expected that the Midlands side will have to make additional sales to make such moves in the window, despite accumulating around £80m in departures so far, only time will tell if the deal will prevail.

Fabrizio Romano Gives Update On 21-Year-Old Chelsea Target

Chelsea are still believed to be "following" Celta Vigo midfielder Gabri Veiga in the summer transfer window, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

How much does Gabri Veiga earn?

The 21-year-old has emerged as a wanted man this summer, having enjoyed a superb season for his current side, arguably standing out as their best player. Last term, he excelled in his attacking midfield role, scoring 11 goals in 28 La Liga starts, as well as registering four assists along the way.

Celta may find it hard to keep hold of Veiga come the end of the current window, given the level of interest in his signature, and Chelsea are one of the clubs who have emerged as the front-runners to snap him up in the near future. The Blues may be looking to bring in more attacking reinforcements after signing Nicolas Jackson, whether that be in midfield or in front-line, and a creative figure who can hopefully provide for a new striker could be ideal.

Now, a new update has emerged over Veiga's future, with the west Londoners again mentioned as being strong suitors for the Spaniard, who currently earns £83,000 per week at Celta.

gabri-veiga-liverpool-transfer-news-premier-league

What's the latest on Veiga to Chelsea?

Speaking to Caught Offside, Romano gave an update regarding Veiga's future, admitting he remains a summer transfer target for Chelsea, among other top clubs, with sides confident of striking a deal below the player's €40m (£34m) release clause.

"The Gabri Veiga saga could also get interesting, with Chelsea and many other clubs following his situation, though still no official bids have been sent to Celta.

"I’m told clubs feel they can make a deal work with bids below the player’s €40m release clause now. For now there doesn’t appear to be a clear preference from the player but really many clubs have looked into it including big names in the Premier League.

"Chelsea are one of them, and there’s also been interest from Man City (who are now focused on Josko Gvardiol), and also Liverpool showed an interest a few weeks ago but are now focused on different players."

This is an intriguing update that once again suggests that Chelsea's interest in Veiga won't be going away, with Mauricio Pochettino potentially seeing him as an ideal man to fill the void left by Mason Mount, who has completed a move to Manchester United.

At 21, the nine-cap Spain Under-21 international would be a long-term addition to a Blues squad that may need fresh legs and youth added to it, having seen older players such as Cesar Azpilicueta, N'Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic move on this summer.

A creative force with an eye for goal, Veiga has even been compared to former Chelsea hero Juan Mata, in terms of the wand-like left foot he possesses and his level of end product, while Spanish publication Sport have hailed him as "amazing" in the past and Romano has dubbed him an "electric player".

He has scored 11 goals in La Liga, showing that he can shine in one of the top leagues in the world at a young age, and he should only get better as a player as he becomes more matured and polishes his all-round game, making it a no-brainer of a signing for Pochettino to bring in.
