Aston Villa fighting to sign "special" £30m prodigy to replace Ramsey

Aston Villa defied expectations to secure a top-four Premier League finish this season, but Unai Emery must hold the belief that some of the division's struggling giants will enjoy resurgences next year.

As such, transfer recruitment must be unerring, with Champions League football requiring added firepower and boosted quality to juggle the strain of competition across four different fronts.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery

Ross Barkley is closing on a transfer to Villa Park, but he's not the only midfielder on Monchi's radar, with a prodigious talent now being lined up.

Villa send scouts for touted talent

According to Caught Offside, Villa have sent scouts to watch Desire Doue in action for Stade Rennais this season, with the French Ligue 1 outfit valuing the 18-year-old – who is said to have been the subject of talks with Arsenal – at €35m (£30m).

Rennes midfielder Desire Doue

That said, a host of top European sides – including Manchester United and Real Madrid – are also eager for his signature and Emery will need to fight tooth and nail to get this one over the line.

Desire Doue's season in numbers

Last season, a 17-year-old Doue started 11 matches – scoring three goals – in the French top flight and was hailed by talent scout Jacek Kulig as "one of the leaders of a great French generation."

This season, the youngster's meteoric rise has seen him eclipse already lofty expectations to start 17 Ligue 1 matches and clinch four goals and four assists apiece, growing into his skin as a flexible attacking midfielder and developing an impressive and varied array of abilities.

Moreover, Doue ranks among the top 7% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for progressive passes, the top 6% for successful take-ons, the top 15% for tackles, the top 6% for interceptions and the top 3% for blocks per 90, as per FBref.

His inborn athleticism and ease in progression makes him the perfect player to diversify the Villan attack, tenacious and robust enough to effectively add to the defensive efforts, while blessed with technical prowess to see him pick out his peers abounding ahead of him with frightening quality.

Doue been hailed as a "special" prospect by analyst Ben Mattinson and it's hardly difficult to discern why, with the Frenchman nurturing a truly incredible skill set that will only bloom as the years go by.

And it's for this reason that Emery and Monchi must throw the kitchen sink and secure his services, with his left-sided proclivity and dynamic approach potentially making him the perfect replacement for Jacob Ramsey, who has attracted attention from Liverpool, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur recently amid growing concerns that Villa might need to cash in to stay in line with profitability and sustainability rules.

Jacob Ramsey for Aston Villa

Ramsey is a talented and multi-functioning player but he usually finds a home down the left flank, though considering that he also performs well in the centre of the park, Doue would mark not only the perfect replacement but actually a big upgrade.

The 22-year-old would fetch a figure as high as £50m and has been blighted by injuries this season, starting eight times in the league and having been absent since the early days of March.

Given that Ramsey has only scored one goal and supplied two assists last season, averaging 0.7 key passes and 2.6 successful duels per game, as per Sofascore, it might be time to cash in, especially if selling opens up space for a precocious prospect in Doue.

Ray Parlour backs Arsenal to sign PL star who will cost as much as Rice

In two weeks the streets of north London could be engulfed in a sea of red as Arsenal celebrate a historic Premier League title, their first in 20 years.

However, it could equally all be doom and gloom should the might of Manchester City win their remaining three matches of the season.

The Gunners have come so far this term and if they beat Manchester United and Everton, will finish on 89 points. The fact that tally may not be enough to be crowned champions is rather ludicrous.

City are still the favourites and if they do win the league, it’ll be back to the drawing board for Mikel Arteta and Co during what could be a rather exciting summer transfer window.

Last year it was all about Declan Rice. Edu had been tracking the England midfielder for quite some time and in a desperate attempt to ward off the Citizens, a £105m bid was lodged and finally accepted by West Ham after some toing and froing.

The end result has been near perfect. That fee has looked like a bargain for a man now thought to be in with a chance of winning the PFA Player of the Season award following a career-best haul of seven goals and nine assists, as well as some sterling defensive displays.

Declan Rice

He’s attracted praise right throughout the season, the latest of which has come from Ray Parlour.

What Ray Parlour said about Declan Rice

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast on behalf of NetBet Sports Betting the former Arsenal midfield waxed lyrical over the club’s record signing.

He said: “Declan has been a top signing for Arsenal and it’s great he is still playing at such a high level when it matters most at the business end of the season. His energy is great, he plays every game, his goal against Bournemouth typifies his drive and energy during the game. He deserves to be up there for PFA Player of the Season. It was a big move for him and he’s settled immediately into this team.”

Asked whether any other Arsenal stars could be in the frame for the award at the season’s end, the Romford Pele commented: “Odegaard has been excellent as has Saka who both are in the mix for sure, but Rice for me takes it.

“One can’t forget both centre-backs who have been amazing and should both be in the team of the season. I think Arsenal will have many players in the team of the season for sure.”

So, what’s on the agenda for the forthcoming summer? Well, it could be about another Premier League star in Alexander Isak.

What Ray Parlour has said about Alexander Isak

Reports in recent weeks have suggested that the Newcastle striker is high on Arsenal’s list of priorities for the summer. The trouble is that it could take a seismic fee to prise away a man who has found the net on 24 occasions in all competitions this term. For context, that’s four more than Arteta’s leading marksman this term. Bukayo Saka has 20.

Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak

Speaking to FFC about what the Swede could bring to the Emirates Stadium, Parlour stated: “Isak is a player I like a lot. If you look at the signing of Rice, he is exactly what the team needed when Xhaka left and he has taken the club to another level.”

The move to acquire Rice was certainly a landmark moment in Arsenal’s recent history, but so too could the signing of an exciting centre-forward. There is a sense, despite the club’s leading Premier League tally of 88 goals this term, that they still need a striker to go to the next level.

Isak, therefore, could be exactly that man. Parlour continued: “Isak is the type of player who can do well in this Arsenal team. He will suit Arsenal’s fluid style of play and can do well in this team with the likes of Saka, Martinelli, Havertz, Trossard and Odegaard supporting him. It’s important to have quality strikers as we had in our era with Wiltord, Kanu, Henry and Bergkamp.

“However, Newcastle will not want to lose their top striker. Fee wise, he will be similar to Rice’s fee, so if Newcastle are forced to sell, then yes he would take Arsenal forward.”

The former midfielder isn’t wrong. Reports have stated that the Sweden international may well cost £100m if the Magpies are to sanction a sale.

Arsenal eye "unstoppable" Isak alternative who'd be an upgrade on Havertz

The incredible striker has been in unbelievable form this season.

Ollie Robinson takes five to claim the South Coast spoils

Sussex wrap up emphatic victory with a day to spare in first round of Bob Willis Trophy

ECB Reporters Network03-Aug-2020Sussex 176 (Salt 68, Garton 54*) and 221 (Salt 80) beat Hampshire 153 (Came 25) and 150 (Robinson 5-29) by 94 runs Ollie Robinson took five wickets, including three in 14 balls, as Sussex beat Hampshire by 94 runs in their Bob Willis Trophy south group opener at Hove.Robinson picked up Joe Weatherley, Felix Organ and Sam Northeast before lunch and claimed Harry Came as his fourth victim early into the afternoon session. He then returned after tea to remove last man Ajeet Singh to finish with 5 for 29 from 13.3 impressive overs.Hampshire lost wickets steadily in their pursuit of a victory target of 245 and were dismissed for 150.Robinson, 26, finished with match figures of 8 for 56 and once again showed the form which brought him 137 Championship wickets in the last two seasons and a place in England’s training squad for the recent Test series against West Indies. He removed both Hampshire openers in near-identical fashion, driving without much foot movement and edging to third slip. George Garton held on at the second attempt to remove Joe Weatherley (2) before taking a low catch offered by Organ for 9.Robinson struck again in his fourth over when Northeast (7), attempting a checked drive, got an inside edge and lost his leg stump and Hampshire had slumped to 38 for four just after lunch when Came was defeated by Robinson’s extra bounce off a good length and edged to Phil Salt at slip for 6. After his new-ball spell Robinson had figures of four for 15 from eight overs.Although Robinson was a handful throughout, there was some poor shot selection by the Hampshire batsmen with no one in either of their innings going past 30.After Robinson had wrecked their top order, debutant off-spinner Jack Carson picked up three wickets as Hampshire’s batsmen continued to show a lack of discipline having seemingly got themselves established.Ian Holland (13) was bowled sweeping as for the second time in the match Carson took a wicket with his second ball before left-hander Tom Alsop, who looked as comfortable as anyone, came down the track and was beaten in the flight, bowled for 27.Lewis McManus was another who got out when seemingly well set, caught off a top-edged pull for 28 the ball after he pulled George Garton over mid-wicket for a flat six. Then James Fuller horribly mis-timed a pull at a short ball from slow left-armer Delray Rawlins which he should have blasted out of the ground and instead gave a catch to Henry Crocombe at wide long-on.Hampshire were 135 for 8 at tea and their resistance lasted for only another 15 minutes after the interval. Mason Crane endured a 14-ball duck, caught off a mis-timed sweep to give Carson his fifth wicket of the match.Fittingly, though, it was left to Robinson – the best bowler on show by some margin – to wrap things up when he had last man Dale caught behind for a duck to claim the 14th five-wicket haul of his first-class career. Keith Barker, who struck some futile blows towards the end, finished unbeaten on 25.Earlier, Sussex had added 66 runs to their overnight 155 for 6 before they were dismissed for 221 in their second innings.Barker made the breakthrough in the second over of the day when Rawlins (11) was caught behind to give the former Warwickshire left-armer his 400th first-class wicket. Off-spinner Organ and leg-spinner Crane combined to finish off the innings.Robinson made a rapid 23 before trying to sweep Organ out of the rough and giving a catch to Holland, running back from slip.Garton (13) was leg before when he missed a sweep off Crane, who finished off the innings when Mitch Claydon (16) slogged across the line after adding 22 runs for the last wicket with Crocombe (10 not out).

Farke’s worst fear: Phil Hay relays injury news on £50,000-p/w Leeds star

Phil Hay has relayed a big injury update on one Leeds United star ahead of the final two games of the Championship season.

Leeds back in Championship top two

It was a good evening for the Whites on Monday, picking up a crucial 4-3 victory at Middlesbrough to take them back into the automatic promotion spots ahead of Ipswich Town.

Two goals from Crysencio Summerville and one apiece from Patrick Bamford and Wilfried Gnonto meant Leeds came away with three vital points, with attention now turning to Friday’s trip to Queens Park Rangers.

However, the win at the Riverside came at a cost. Substitute Dan James helped the Whites close the game out but suffered an injury late on, unable to celebrate with the travelling supporters at full-time.

Now, an update has emerged from Elland Road on the £50,000-a-week winger.

Dan James injury update

Talking after the game, Farke was concerned that the injury was serious, describing James as a “key player”. He said: "Really unlucky, a key player for us, would be really bad news if he has a major injury. Let's hope and pray. We have to wait and assess."

Hay relayed the news from Leeds regarding James, posting the update on X.

Leeds’ official statement said that ‘James suffered a costal cartilage injury and an oblique abdominal muscle tear’. He’s out of the trip to Queens Park Rangers as Hay mentions, with the final game of the 46-game season at home to Southampton following eight days later.

James may be in a race against time to feature against the Saints, in what could be a dramatic final day of the Championship campaign.

Leeds now set to sell £40,000 p/w player in permanent transfer this summer

Ruthless from Farke…

ByTom Cunningham Apr 21, 2024

Providing Leeds win at Loftus Road on Friday, Ipswich will need to take three points at both Hull City and Coventry City to have promotion in their hands on the final day. Four points from those two games would leave both sides on 93 points, with Leeds having a superior goal difference, while there is a possibility that Leeds could go up before May 4th should Ipswich lose both games.

However, not having James, Leeds’ second top scorer this season with 13 goals, available for selection on Friday is a blow, but hopefully, Summerville and Gnonto can pick up where they left off on Monday, with Jaidon Anthony an option from the bench.

Avishka Fernando and Kusal Mendis hit tons as Sri Lanka dominate West Indies

What will especially lift the hosts is that it was their wristspinners Hasaranga and Sandakan that sewed this game up

The Report by Andrew Fidel Fernando26-Feb-2020

Kusal Mendis and Avishka Fernando are a pair of delightful strokemakers•Getty Images

Kusal Mendis and Avishka Fernando dovetailed beautifully through the middle overs, producing an effortless 239-run third-wicket partnership that became the bedrock of Sri Lanka’s 345 for 8, and by extension, their series-sealing 161-run victory over West Indies. Mendis hit a run-a-ball 119 and Fernando made 127 off 123 deliveries, as they punished West Indies’ indiscipline with the ball and sloppiness in the field, rescuing Sri Lanka from a scoreline of 9 for 2 in the third over.Although the surface clearly suited batting, and a stiff wind across the ground made things difficult for bowlers, a target of 346 was always going to be daunting. And West Indies never really had the measure of this chase. There was a mildly positive 64-run opening stand, as well as a customary Shai Hope fifty, but at no stage did they manage to put Sri Lanka under pressure. What will especially lift the hosts is that it was their wristspinners that sewed this game up – Wanindu Hasaranga and Lakshan Sandakan taking three wickets apiece through the middle overs to send West Indies into a nosedive. Sandakan claimed the final wicket in the 40th over to finish with figures of 3 for 57. Hasaranga was more impressive, returning 3 for 30 from his 10. Each of his wickets came via the googly, which West Indies’ batsmen repeatedly failed to pick.Coming in at 9 for 2, Mendis had had a nervy first six deliveries – beaten second ball, dropped on two by Kieron Pollard soon after, then rapped hard on the gloves by a Jason Holder delivery that leapt at him from a length. But he settled quickly after the early chance, working his way through the Powerplay with Fernando. Sri Lanka got to 49 for 2 after 10 overs but really it was in the period that followed that the two young batsmen began to flourish, in lock-step, almost never more than 10 runs apart from each other. With West Indies’ quicks frequently straying into the pads, unable to contend the wind that blows across Sooriyawewa, Mendis and Fernando accumulated freely into the ground’s vast, unguarded spaces, on the legside in particular. When they hit boundaries, generally they were punishing short balls, which tended to sit up on this surface. Mendis was particularly prolific with the pull shot, while Fernando heaved across the line to good effect as well. They also ran exceptionally well between the wickets, frequently putting pressure on fielders, who would fumble or send in wayward, harried throws. When the spinners came on, their progress seemed even more effortless. Neither Fabian Allen nor Roston Chase got a lot of turn off the pitch, and these two batsmen were by now experts at hitting gaps. Fernando may just about have played the better innings in the end, but no two single strokes were more alluring than Mendis’ advancing, inside-out hits over cover against Allen in the 26th over. He had reached fifty off the 55th delivery he faced; Fernando got to his-half century off his 56th ball. The pair marched almost inevitably to their hundreds – each advancing steadily and surely through the nineties to get to the milestones in successive overs – Mendis in the 37th off his 107th ball, and Fernando in the 38th off his 109th. Such was the evenness of their progress, that at this stage, they had only hit 15 fours between them, Mendis striking nine of those. With only two wickets down, the score at well over 200, and the death overs now upon them, they started hitting out, Mendis hitting three more fours before eventually top-edging Alzarri Joseph. Fernando hit four more boundaries before holing out to deep midwicket.Their partnership was not only the best ever at this venue, it was also Sri Lanka’s third-highest in all of one-day cricket. It came at better than a run-a-ball as well, which meant it had provided an outstanding platform for the lower middle order. Thisara Perera did the most to do justice to the base Mendis and Fernando had given, hitting 36 off 25 balls. Dhananjaya de Silva, Hasaranga and Isuru Udana also provided cameos, as West Indies’ fielding effort became exceedingly frayed through the death overs.Hope floated through the early overs of the chase, hitting some exquisite legside boundaries to set himself on his way, but then he ran Sunil Ambris out, and before long, was out himself for 51 off 65 balls, chipping Angelo Mathews to short midwicket. Then Sri Lanka’s wristspinners took over.Bravo didn’t pick Hasaranga’s googly and edged to slip, where de Silva took an excellent catch. Chase then let a beautiful Sandakan stock ball wriggle between bat and pad and clatter into his stumps. Pollard followed soon after, in similar fashion, but to the bowling of Hasaranga. By the time Holder was out, also bowled by a googly, West Indies were 130 for 5 in the 31st over, and never really looked like they would make much of the chase.Keemo Paul and Allen had a little bit of fun, but even that didn’t last long, as Nuwan Pradeep came back to take two wickets in an over. After the first ODI had been decided in a tight finish, this was a proper thumping.

Man Utd making advances to sign "dominant" gem who has £15m+ release clause

With Raphael Varane's future still in doubt and his contract set to expire in the summer of 2025, Manchester United have reportedly made contact to secure a long-term replacement in the coming months.

Man United transfer news

It seems Sir Jim Ratcliffe certainly isn't messing around, with links to the likes of Ivan Toney, Donyell Malen and Bologna's Jhon Lucumi already emerging ahead of the summer transfer window. Toney would particularly be a statement signing, given the interest in the Brentford striker elsewhere in the Premier League, but it remains to be seen whether the Red Devils can put forward a convincing pitch to the England international.

Brentford's Ivan Toney

When it comes to departures, meanwhile, United are reportedly ready to show Christian Eriksen the door with the Dane now behind Kobbie Mainoo in Erik ten Hag's pecking order. The 18-year-old has been quite the revelation and has for now eliminated the need for United to search for another central midfielder this summer.

Man Utd make first move for bargain Varane replacement in summer deal

Varane’s future remains uncertain…

ByTom Cunningham Mar 29, 2024

Young players could be the way forward for those at Old Trafford, too. The Red Devils have a lot of work to do, but players like Mainoo emerging is certainly a good start. And joining him could yet be Aaron Anselmino to improve that good start even further.

According to Ole via Sport Witness, Manchester United have made contact to sign Anselmino from Boca Juniors this summer. The 18-year-old centre-back has reportedly reiterated his desire to stay put at the Argentine club, but United have persisted with their interest alongside Italian giants Milan.

It's no shock that the Premier League heavyweights are interested in a deal, given that Anselmino's release clause currently sits at just €18.5m (£15.8m). With Varane set to leave in summer 2025 at the latest, United need to start thinking about long-term replacements, which is where Anselmino should come in at Old Trafford.

"Dominant" Anselmino is one for the future

It speaks volumes about just how talented Anselmino is that he's already made seven appearances for the Boca Juniors first-team, playing as both a defensive midfielder and central defender in the two appearances that he's made so far this season, only adding to his reputation.

At 18 years old, the Argentine is only set to get better, and for less than £16m, United would be getting themselves a bargain deal before his valuation rises. Signing Anselmino would also represent the direction in which Ratcliffe is attempting to head towards when it comes to incomings.

Ratcliffe said (via Fabrizio Romano): "Mbappé to Man United? I’d try to find the next Mbappé rather than spend a fortune trying to buy success. It’s not that clever to sign Mbappé now, it’s more challenging to find the next Mbappé, next Bellingham or next Roy Keane."

What's more, Anselmino is certainly rated despite his age, with Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig posting on X:

Whilst he will take some convincing thanks to his desire to stay put at Boca Juniors as things stand, United should push on and try everything possible to land a future star in Anselmino.

After the boos, Warner returns home to love and adulation

All summer in England, he had to ignore the verbal bile directed at him. Now after 18 months, he was engulfed by warmth of the home fans

Daniel Brettig in Adelaide27-Oct-2019David Warner spent most of this year’s England tour trying to ignore the verbal bile constantly directed his way. So there was not only relief but also revelation in the experience of a loud, supportive Adelaide Oval crowd on Sunday, as the exhortations of 16,268 spectators helped lift him to a first ever Twenty20 international century on his 33rd birthday. There had been queries as to exactly how Warner could be received in his first home match since the Newlands ban. Unlike Steven Smith, his public reputation hadn’t been bolstered by match-winning turns during the Ashes series. But from the moment he took to the middle, Warner was given plenty of adulation to feed off, and admitted that he had almost forgotten what it was like to get the support at home, his first appearance in more than 18 months.”It’s always fantastic to get that. You sort of sit back and watch highlights of other people’s packages and stuff, you forget how much it actually drives you when you’re out there,” Warner said. “We love the people’s support and we love the Australian crowds coming out and supporting us and we always try and put on a show for them.”But I don’t think they actually realise how much impact it has on us players while we are out there. I remember when I was supporting the [Sydney] Roosters in the Grand Final this year. When you’ve got that support behind the team or when you’re supporting someone else, it’s a massive boost, the confidence for us and for the other people out there playing.””Emotions were great. Another year older. Another game for Australia and coming out here in front of an Adelaide crowd. There’s no better place to play you know. You’ve always got a fantastic wicket, the curators are absolutely fantastic here. It’s a batting paradise. I absolutely love it out here.”The most notable element of Warner’s innings was the fact that in a T20I career dating back to 2009, he had never bettered the 89 he coshed against South Africa at the MCG on his storied international debut. More than a decade later, he was able to scamper a last ball single to go to three figures, a milestone that afforded him some light-hearted banter from Glenn Maxwell at the change of innings.Getty Images”You don’t even actually realise until you get it. It wasn’t even on my mind. You actually forget that you don’t have one,” Warner said. “Maxi reminded me and said ‘welcome to the club’ which is quite funny. It’s just one of those things to contribute, come out and play you free-flowing game from the start. Obviously the couple of balls where a little bit here and there. You don’t get to face too many deliveries back to back when someone’s going off.”For me it’s about keeping a calm head and making sure that I bide my time a little bit and try and pick the gaps as much as I can and run hard. [Last over] bat on ball and I was thinking obscure field so for me you know what you’re going to get. It’s going to wide and pretty much, I don’t lap or anything like that so whatever comes into my mind I try to get it out of my head.”It was in my head but you’ve got to try and pick your gaps. I think in Australia with those fields, you only have to hit the gap hard and it can beat the fielder and then you can run two. You’re always thinking at the start of the over about what do we need. Obviously we had plenty on the board so you’re just trying to hit gaps.”It wasn’t just Warner who enjoyed his place in the sun. Aaron Finch, Maxwell and Australia’s bowlers all responded with a combination of skill and flair that completely confounded a modest Sri Lanka, suggesting that if the Australians stay focused, they can set-up more pageants of adulation in Brisbane and Melbourne this week.”Very good from us. We all set out to come out and try be positive with the bat,” Warner said. “I think the way forward is exactly that, where we try and set the tone at the top and then Maxi coming in and doing what he does. For once the plan actually came off. Obviously starting well and then Maxi coming in and doing what he does. And yeah, someone batting through. That was all in all a great batting performance and obviously the bowlers finished it off there.”
