Ricky Ponting led Tasmania to a what appeared a decisive lead after Luke Butterworth razed Western Australia’s first innings for 97 on day two
ESPNcricinfo staff22-Feb-2013 Scorecard Ricky Ponting led Tasmania to a what appeared a decisive lead after Luke Butterworth razed Western Australia’s first innings for 97 on day two of the Sheffield Shield match at the WACA ground.Resuming at 6 for 54, the Warriors could make nothing of Butterworth, who now has 35 wickets at 17.02 in the Shield this season. They had a chance of restricting the visitors when the Tigers quickly slipped to 2 for 10, but Ponting forged the biggest stand of the match with Alex Doolan to stretch the lead.Ponting’s innings was aggressive, featuring two sixes, as the ball continued to zip around for the WA bowlers. Ryan Duffield enjoyed most success with his left-arm swing.Steady contributions down the order frustrated WA’s efforts to start a rush of wickets, and Jason Krejza will hope to add to his side’s advantage when he and the last man Adam Maher resume on day three.
Cricket fans in South Africa will again have to go without live free-to-air coverage of the majority of the Test series against Pakistan
ESPNcricinfo staff31-Jan-2013Cricket fans in South Africa will again have to go without live free-to-air coverage of the majority of the Test series against Pakistan after talks between Cricket South Africa (CSA) and the South Africa Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) failed to come to an agreement. The outcome is similar to that reached for the New Zealand tour, where the Test matches were restricted to highlights on SABC, the national broadcaster, and the ODIs and Twenty20s were shown live. However, the board had retained the hope that for the season’s main attraction, the visit of Pakistan, that all the matches would be available on free-to-air television but now the five-day games will remain ball-by-ball on pay service SuperSport. There has, though, been a small increase in what is available free-to-air. SABC will show two blocks of footage on a daily basis during the Test series. This will comprise a broadcast in the afternoon which will contain a mixture of highlights and live coverage. Full evening highlights, however, will not be screened until 10pm at night.CSA’s commercial manager, Marc Jury, said: “Although we could not reach an agreement on live ball-by-ball coverage of the Test Series, we are satisfied that there is an increase in coverage compared to the New Zealand series.”With the Pakistan series being the last home international series of the 2012/2013 season, we will definitely be looking at how best to manage our free to air broadcast rights going forward to ensure that all South Africans are able to watch the Proteas when playing at home.”Cricket is the second-most popular sport to football in South Africa and almost five times as many people watch T20 and ODI matches on the SABC compared to SuperSport. Nearly seven times more watch Test cricket on the national broadcaster.

Tim Southee has been dropped from New Zealand’s squad for the second Test against South Africa in Hamilton, starting on Thursday. After a tough first Test in Dunedin, in which he conceded 140 runs and failed to take a wicket, Southee will return to the Plunket Shield to work on technique and form.New Zealand have beefed up their bowling with the addition of Mark Gillespie and the re-inclusion of Brent Arnel, who was part of the squad for the first Test but was not included in the final 12.Gillespie has come off a run of fine form in which he has taken 20 wickets in his last three first-class matches. He is third on the list of wicket-takers, behind the yet-to-be-eligible Neil Wagner and Arnel, with 30 wickets at an average of 27.53.”Tim Southee hasn’t been included He’s a talented young fast bowler and we are confident he will return to the Plunket Shield and continue to put pressure on those in the Test team,” Kim Littlejohn, New Zealand national selection manager said. “Mark Gillespie returns to international cricket after showing good form recently and provides and a strong and reliable bowling option.”New Zealand Test Squad
Ross Taylor (capt), Brent Arnel, Trent Boult, Doug Bracewell, Andrew Ellis, Mark Gillespie, Martin Guptill, Chris Martin, Brendon McCullum, Tarun Nethula, Rob Nicol, Kruger Van Wyk (wk), Daniel Vettori, Kane Williamson
Gillespie has played three Tests for New Zealand, one of them against South Africa in November 2007 at Centurion. Gillespie will have fond memories of that match as it was his Test debut and he took a five-for in South Africa’s only innings, dismissing Jacques Kallis, AB de Villiers and Mark Boucher. There is the possibility that Arnel and Gillespie won’t feature in the final XI on a pitch that is no longer expected to be seamer-friendly. Although there was initially talk of a green wicket being prepared at Seddon Park, this has been doused by the suggestion that the strip may actually be a little dry.In anticipation of that, New Zealand have also added variety to their attack, with the inclusion of legspinner Tarun Nethula, who has yet to play Test cricket. “We are pleased to be able to offer Tarun an opportunity. He is bowling well and offers a point of difference to the attack,” Littlejohn said.Neither BJ Watling, who is recovering from a hip joint injury, nor Dean Brownlie, who has a fractured finger, were considered for the squad. South African-born wicket-keeper Kruger van Wyk keeps his place along with Rob Nicol, who had a tough debut opening the batting.
Ricky Ponting remains vital to the development of Australia’s Test side but cannot keep earning a place in the team based on his reputation, according to the coach Mickey Arthur

Ricky Ponting remains vital to the development of Australia’s Test side but cannot keep earning a place in the team based on his reputation, according to the coach Mickey Arthur. As Australia’s batsmen began their batting camp in Melbourne on Tuesday ahead of the Boxing Day Test against India, the selectors were faced with some tough decisions over the make-up of the squad. The batting order was especially fluid, with questions over whether Shane Watson and Shaun Marsh would return from injury, whether Daniel Christian would be squeezed in as an allrounder, and whether the irresistible form of the opener Ed Cowan could be ignored. And while Ponting is expected to play at the MCG, Arthur said nobody was a certainty to take on the Indians.”I don’t think anybody is guaranteed a start,” Arthur said. “Ricky Ponting is really vital to where we want to take this team so we’re really hoping he finds his form and hopefully his form is just around the corner. We’ll discuss that again tonight and make sure we’ve got all our bases covered in terms of selection.”Following Australia’s loss in Hobart, their first defeat at the hands of New Zealand in 18 years, Arthur said he viewed Ponting and Michael Hussey, who are struggling for runs, as important men in the future of the side due to their middle-order experience. And while Arthur still believed they have roles to play, he said both men would need Test runs to continue justifying their selection.”I have backed Ricky Ponting like I’ve backed Mike Hussey for a period of time because I think they’re crucial for the development of the side,” Arthur said. “For our young guys to bat with guys like that is fantastic, but again they need to keep giving us ammunition.”They need to keep giving us performances. Nobody has got a privilege to play in the Australian cricket team. They are the type of characters that we want in our side, most definitely.”Ponting, who turned 37 on Monday, showed glimpses of his previous form when he made 62 in Johannesburg and 78 at the Gabba over the past month, but his dismissals in both innings at Bellerive Oval were clumsy. He walked across his stumps in the first innings and was lbw as he was caught in two minds, and in the second his attempted punch through the off side resulted in a loopy lob to cover. In his past 16 Tests, Ponting has averaged 27.48 and has not scored a century. Arthur said over the next two days at the batting camp in Melbourne, the plan for Ponting was to “free him up” ahead of a series against an Indian attack that could feature Ishant Sharma, the fast bowler who has dismissed Ponting six times from eight Tests.Arthur said while the batsmen would work against the moving ball at the batting camp – a weakness that was again exposed against New Zealand in Hobart – and would face bowling machines designed to replicate Ishant and Zaheer Khan, major technical overhauls were not on the agenda.”This is giving us the best opportunity for us to be in the best possible space for Boxing Day. That’s it,” he said. “We’re not reinventing the wheel in any way, we’re giving our batters the maximum opportunity to get themselves ready to play a Test match starting on Boxing Day. We feel there are one or two things we need to discuss.”We’re also going to have a look at India, we’re going to talk about their attack, talk about what we can expect from them and practice accordingly. It’s certainly no boot camp. It’s giving our batters an opportunity to get themselves into the best possible frame of mind for the 26th.”

Kevin Pietersen has tried to put to bed talk about his future in one-day cricket by insisting that he wants to play for England until at least the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand
ESPNcricinfo staff07-Oct-2011Kevin Pietersen has tried to put to bed talk about his future in one-day cricket by insisting that he wants to play for England until at least the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. Pietersen is back in the ODI set-up for the series in India, having been rested for the last month of the home season, but is under pressure to perform after a lean two years in the 50-over format.Pietersen is likely to slot back in at No. 4 when the series starts next week following two warm-up matches although in his absence the likes of Ravi Bopara and Jonny Bairstow have staked their claims. Before leaving for the tour Alastair Cook, the one-day captain, spoke about wanting Pietersen involved all the way to the next World Cup but also said that players had to earn their selection with consistent performances. Pietersen hasn’t scored an ODI hundred since November 2008 and over the last two years his average has languished in the low 20s.”I don’t know how many times I need to say it till you stop asking the questions,” Pietersen said. “I want to continue playing until the 2015 World Cup, and then we’ll reassess. No one’s ever guaranteed their place – for their country, for their county, for their club side.”There’s a lot of different permutations and different things that can happen. It’s just a case of enjoying every day, and also realising how fortunate we are. If there’s any place you want to come and play one-day international cricket, it’s here in India.”Pietersen used his break from the game – which included missing the one-dayers against India and the Twenty20s against West Indies – to completely get away from cricket. He moved house in London and spent time with his family, which has become an increasingly important part of his life and the main reason he has admitted to not being a fan of long tours. He has also said that, while retaining the hunger to play all three forms of international cricket, he enjoyed not having a gruelling schedule of training. “I wanted to take a complete break, and get that bug back for training. That’s the first break I’ve had without an injury for England. It was much appreciated.”The hardest part of playing all three forms of the game is turning up on training day and doing warm-ups – I think it takes a couple of years off your career. To not have to turn up to training days was an absolute blessing. But you do miss the cricket, participating and competing – because we’re all competitors.”After he was left out of the one-day squad last month, it emerged that Pietersen had a wrist injury that required some management and he had an injection before leaving for India. “I’ve got something in my wrist,” he said. “I had a cortisone injection a few days ago, and cortisone just before I left. It’s just a case of getting through this tour and seeing where we are at the end.”Pietersen, though, will need to fight through some minor discomfort because England won’t wait for him to rediscover his one-day mojo forever.
The PCB has asked Sri Lanka Cricket “for their views” on the prospect of playing their series later this year in Pakistan instead of Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka were the last team to play international cricket in Pakistan – their tour in March 2009 was cut short after terrorists attacked their team bus as it was on the way to the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore for the second Test. That attack, on the back of growing security concerns over the previous two years, brought to an end international cricket in the country, taking away the 2011 World Cup in the process. The two sides are due to play a full Test and limited-overs series in October, scheduled in the FTP officially as a ‘home’ series for Pakistan. Until now the series was due to take place in Sri Lanka, but after a meeting between PCB chairman Ijaz Butt and Pakistan’s interior minister Rehman Malik on Thursday, the government is keen on bringing international cricket back to the country.”The government wants this [series to be held in Pakistan],” a senior PCB official told ESPNcricinfo. “We have asked SLC again to let us have their views on the issue.”The prospect of the series actually taking place in Pakistan remains a distant one. So far the government has only passed on verbal instructions to the PCB, who in turn have written to SLC. As of Saturday, when a SLC official was asked about the development or whether the board had been approached, he told ESPNcricinfo: “Not to my knowledge.”Most of Pakistan’s major cities – where such a series is likely to be played – have been targeted fairly recently by terrorist attacks, within the last year in the cases of Lahore and Karachi. At the beginning of this month Osama bin Laden was killed in an operation by US forces in Abbottabad, a town not far from the country’s capital Islamabad.Pakistan have played their ‘home’ series since the Lahore attacks at a number of venues; a series against South Africa was arranged in the UAE. In 2009-10, they broke up a full tour of New Zealand by playing the ODIs in Abu Dhabi and the Tests in New Zealand itself. They used England as a venue for two ‘home’ Tests against Australia last summer. Pakistan is also, incidentally, in talks with SLC over staging their series with England over the turn of the year in Sri Lanka.Afghanistan will actually become the first international team to play in Pakistan next week when they take on Pakistan ‘A’ in three 50-over games. Interestingly enough, one of the games was arranged for Abbottabad, but after the meeting between Butt and Malik the venue was switched to Islamabad.

Kevin Pietersen has undergone routine surgery to repair the hernia that led to his early departure from England’s World Cup campaign, but is expected to be ready for the Sri Lanka Test series which gets underway in late May. Following a period of recuperation, Pietersen will begin a rehabilitation programme with his county Surrey, in conjunction with the England team medical staff.”Kevin underwent a successful, routine operation with a hernia and an area of weaknesses repaired on the left side while a small hernia was identified and repaired on the right side,” said ECB Chief Medical Officer, Dr Nick Peirce.”Kevin will now undergo a relatively brief period of rest before beginning a rehabilitation programme with Surrey CCC under the guidance of the England team medical staff. His return to first-class cricket will be determined once he commences his rehabilitation programme, but we expect him to be fully fit in time for England’s first summer Test starting May 26.”Pietersen’s departure from the England squad followed a crucial eight-over bowling spell in the team’s six-run victory over South Africa at Chennai last week, but the circumstances were frowned upon by England’s coach, Andy Flower, who had hoped such a key player would take a few painkillers and “bite the bullet” to get through the remainder of the tournament.Nevertheless, Flower accepted that the medical report justified the decision to send him home. “Once Kevin’s hernia injury was identified we knew he would require an operation and the surgeon’s findings further underline the seriousness of the injury,” he said. “We’re pleased Kevin has undergone a successful surgery and can shortly begin his rehabilitation programme with a view to rejoining the England team in time for our first Test match of the summer against Sri Lanka.”
