Everton have confirmed that they have sacked their manager Rafa Benitez this afternoon after just six months in charge.

The Spaniard conceded his tenth defeat in the Premier League yesterday when the side lost to bottom of the league, Norwich City, and already names are being thrown into the hat for the next manager to take on the challenge at Goodison Park.

What’s the word?

Sky Sports journalist, Ben Ransom, has named three managers that are speculated to take over at the club live from the Everton training ground this afternoon, with Wayne Rooney, Frank Lampard and Roberto Martinez all being named as potential suitors.

Ransom spoke live on Sky Sports News on Sunday to speculate on the favourite successors;

“Obviously, Wayne Rooney has been linked straight away, given the relative success he’s managing to have at Derby.”

“Frank Lampard, out of work, his name is always mentioned when a Premier League job comes around.”

“I know that, here at Everton, there are still a lot of admirers for Roberto Martinez, he was in the frame when Benitez was given this job in the summer.”

Everton released a statement this afternoon confirming that a permanent replacement will be made in due course.

Fans will be buzzing

It’s safe to say fans will be buzzing that Benitez has been sacked with immediate effect, with protests planned, banners flown and even attempts to get to the manager in the dugout all being displayed by the Toffees fans over the course of this season.

Rooney is a clear fan favourite for the job, with many fans taking to social media to share their thoughts on appointing the Derby manager, one fan commented:

“This was always going to end in tears, I think the next @Everton manager should be the man who’s worked wonders @dcfcofficial in difficult circumstances and is a bonafide Toffees legend, the one and only @WayneRooney.”

Whoever takes over has a challenge on their hands to change the direction Everton have been heading in this season so far, with the club only picking up only five points from a possible 30 in their last 10 games under the Spaniard.

As a result, they are currently six points shy of the relegation zone, with a huge U-turn needed immediately for the club to have their season saved, so there will be big pressure to make an instant impact for the new manager.

Rooney lacks experience but he has already shown at Derby that he’s capable of reviving a club in troubled waters. With the Rams, he is providing them with a hope of Championship survival despite a haul of 21 points being deducted.

They are now off the bottom, however, on a five-match unbeaten streak. He has worked wonders and it would take something similar to wake the Toffees from their slumber. Perhaps he is the man to do so, therefore.

Steven Gerrard is reportedly keen on bringing Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres to Aston Villa.

That’s according to Spanish outlet Fichajes, and the links have naturally had a number of Villa fans talking on social media.

According to Fichajes earlier this week, Torres is a player who Gerrard admires, with the new Villa boss keen on upgrading his centre-back options. It will cost around €50m (£42m) for Villarreal to part ways with the 24-year-old, who has also been attracting interest from Manchester United and Real Madrid.

Torres appears to be at the top of his game, with a career-high £45m Transfermarkt valuation, and he reached 100 appearances for his current club earlier this month. Notably, his 89.1% passing accuracy rate in La Liga is better than anyone to have started a league match for Villa this term.

Villa fans react

Total Villa relayed Fichajes’ claim regarding Gerrard’s interest in Torres via Twitter early on Thursday morning.

O empate entre 1 a 1 entre Vasco e Sport, na noite desta segunda-feira, na Ilha do Retiro, teve uma jogada polêmica. No segundo tempo, o árbitro Sandro Meira Ricci marcou um pênalti para o Leão alegando toque de mão de Anderson Martins, mas depois de muita discussão, voltou atrás após conversar com um auxiliar. O zagueiro cruz-maltino explicou a jogada e garantiu que a bola bateu no seu peito.

– Foi um lance muito rápido. Foi um lance polêmico, mas ele tinha marcado. A bola bateu no peito. Felizmente o quarto árbitro deu um apoio. O outro assistente conseguiu dar uma informação correta – explicou Anderson na saída de campo.

O Vasco jogou boa parte do jogo com um a mais, já que Diego Souza foi expulso com 20 minutos do primeiro tempo. Porém, o time não conseguiu aproveitar as chances criadas e levou o empate no final da partida. O zagueiro não gostou da atuação do time e disse que o resultado tem um gosto amargo.

A situação do São Paulo é delicada, basta ver no discurso dos jogadores. Nesta quinta-feira, o lateral-esquerdo Edimar disse que o grupo terá de se doar mais do que 100% para salvar o time do rebaixamento no Campeonato Brasileiro. O Tricolor ocupa a 19ª colocação com 23 pontos.

– Claro que no momento como este qualquer jogador se sente pressionado. Sabemos da responsabilidade de jogar no São Paulo, ainda mais na zona do rebaixamento. Mas saliento que o trabalho do Dorival tem sido muito bom, e sabemos que temos a condição de sair. Só que precisamos nos entregar mais. Se não nos doarmos mais que 100%, não vamos salvar o São Paulo – declarou o lateral-esquerdo.

Edimar vem sendo titular com Dorival Júnior, mas agora terá a volta de Júnior Tavares na concorrência. O jovem se recuperou de uma lombalgia e voltou a treinar com o grupo. O titular não se incomoda.

Semana de treinos
Tem coisas que precisamos corrigir, algo que temos falhado. Na parte defensiva, e também na tática do time. É sempre benéfica para o time se recondicionar, colocar as ideias em prática, e é o que temos feito

Fase do time atrapalha renovação de contrato?
Nem tenho pensado nisso, apenas em tirar o São Paulo dessa situação. A confiança é muito grande de sair. Mas minha grande preocupação nesse momento é de tirar o São Paulo dessa situação, trabalhar para corrigir os erros, e depois de contrato vamos ver mais para a frente.

Está sobrecarregado na marcação?
Não, está todo mundo se doando. Mas, como eu disse, é preciso um pouco mais de cada um. Se a gente não tiver essa consciência, vai ficar difícil para a gente tirar o São Paulo dessa situação.

Preocupação com a fase
A preocupação é muito grande. Jogar no São Paulo não é fácil, tricampeão mundial. Estamos preocupados, sim. Mas a confiança é muito grande que vamos dar a volta por cima.

Tem peso nas pernas nessa situação?
Acho que peso nas pernas já não tem, essa pressão, palavra está muito extinta. Todo jogador que está aqui tem muita história. E os mais jovens estão recebendo condições para fazer o melhor possível. Mas peso nas pernas acho que não, temos de ter consciência que estamos em time grande

Por que Cueva não está mais jogando bem?
Isso é uma avaliação de vocês. Sabemos da grande qualidade que ele tem. É um jogador que precisa, como todos, se doar mais. Sabemos que é um grande jogador, e precisamos muito dele para sair dessa situação.

Ano passado o Cruzeiro sofreu mas escapou. O que o São Paulo precisa fazer?
Trabalho. Aí o Mano Menezes chegou, e tivemos uma sequência de resultados positivos. O Mano colocou suas características, fechou também na parte defensiva. E conseguia vencer os jogos. É isso que precisamos.

Steven Bergwijn endured a disasterclass as Tottenham Hotspur’s second-string were embarrassingly beaten by Dutch outfit Vitesse.

Nuno Santo left the bulk of his first-team stars back in north London ahead of this weekend’s crunch match with local rivals West Ham United in the Premier League but it was a call which failed to pay dividends.

The Lilywhites picked up their first defeat in the UEFA Europa Conference League and slipped to third in Group G, which means they have it all to do to secure qualification into the next round.

Whilst players like Harry Kane and Heung-min Son did not travel, several senior professionals did, including the Dutch international, but he struggled to repay his manager’s faith on his return to the side.

Valued at £26m by CIES Football Observatory, Bergwijn was one of the more costly players in the starting XI in the Netherlands, so you’d expect him to have stepped up and been counted – even more so as he was given a full 90 minutes on the pitch.

Instead, he was absolutely anonymous and offered Spurs very little in attack. 17-year-old striker Dane Scarlett struggled at his young age but that was largely due to a lack of service, so the 5 foot 10 winger also failed his teammates.

As per SofaScore, Bergwijn recorded the second-fewest touches (36) of any starter – even goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini (38) had more – which isn’t an encouraging sign as one is between the sticks and the other is an attacking threat.

Elsewhere, the 24-year-old failed to register a shot on goal and wasn’t successful in any of his two dribbling attempts, which has to be a worrying sign considering the quality of opposition, who on the day were much the better side, of course.

He was also weak in possession, losing the ball 11 times from those 36 touches, whilst he won just two of his six duels (33.3%).

Alasdair Gold at football.london was far from impressed with the winger, who returned to his home country, handing him a 4/10 in his post-match ratings column.

Overall, on the above evidence, the 13-time international endured a shocker at the GelreDome on Thursday night. Nuno will be far from pleased with what he witnessed.

What’s the word?

Spurs’ form has taken a turn for the worst in recent weeks, losing three straight heavy defeats in the Premier League, whilst they only just salvaged a point against Stade Rennes in their group stage opener two weeks ago.

Nuno Santo will probably be wanting to change things up on the pitch but he’ll be limited in his options as he won’t be able to call upon either Steven Bergwijn or Ryan Sessegnon.

Bergwijn picked up an injury during that clash in France, whilst Sessegnon has been injured since the international break at the start of the month.

“Nothing has changed,” the Portuguese told the club’s official website this week. “Sess and Stevie will not join the group. The rest of the squad is available. We will also bring in some Under-23s to help us, and we go for the game.”

Big setback

This will be hugely frustrating for the 47-year-old and it may leave him a little worried heading into kickoff, even if it is against a team of much lower quality.

Spurs will remember the Dinamo Zagreb clash from last season, which saw the Croatian champions perform a stunning comeback to knock them out of the Europa League, so no team should be taken lightly.

Nuno badly needs to shake things up, so having a player with a point to prove like Sessegnon available would’ve been an interesting option, whilst Bergwijn had started their opening three league games before his injury.

It can’t be that much of a coincidence that the Lilywhites won all three of those games, too.

He is also one of their biggest threats in the final third, having averaged 1.3 key passes and 2.3 shots per game, a feat only bettered by top goalscorer Heung-min Son, as per WhoScored.

Nuno may have to call upon some of the players that have severely let him down in defeats to arch-rivals Arsenal, Chelsea and Crystal Palace in recent weeks.

The Spurs boss is also thought to be under increasing pressure, according to some reports in the press, so it’s crucial that he gets a result and avoids an embarrassing upset against Mura tonight.

Given their recent performances, Nuno may well be gutted to not be able to change his side completely heading into this fixture.
