Pundit thinks 49ers could sign midfielder who can "add 10+" goals for Leeds

Leeds United could look to strengthen in January and the 49ers Enterprises could now look to enact a cut-price deal for an exciting player at Elland Road, according to BBC pundit John Hartson.

Leeds United look ahead to Blackburn Rovers…

Last Saturday, Leeds ensured they remained seven points behind Ipswich Town in their chase for automatic promotion by defeating Middlesbrough 3-2 at Elland Road, courtesy of goals from Daniel James, Crysencio Summerville and Joel Piroe.

Winning their seventh home match in succession, the Whites look to be a credible force this term after an uncertain few months over the summer. Speaking in his post-match press conference, Farke commended how his side were able to handle elements of the tie against a contender for promotion, saying:

"It’s a really good side and it was important today to be brave, to press with intensity and perhaps even be a bit over-aggressive and emotional instead of being too relaxed. It's always important you're fully committed off the ball, against Boro, or you are punished and they’ve proved this, this season.

"We showed this in the first half; we created so many good situations and moments. It was a wild game in the first half and probably every football fan must have enjoyed this game. I’m a football fan as well, so I loved what we did, but as a manager I liked the second half when we calmed everything down."

Blackburn Rovers lay in wait on Saturday as Leeds United delve into a busy period of festive fixtures, which will go a long way to determining the level of squad surgery Farke may well carry out in January. Speaking of the mid-season window, BBC pundit Hartson has now suggested one man that the Whites should look to pursue that would add further squad depth at Elland Road.

John Hartson recommends David Turnbull to Leeds United

As cited by Leeds Live, former Wales international Hartson has recommended Celtic midfielder David Turnbull as a potential cut-price signing for Leeds United in January, with the 24-year-old facing an uncertain future at Parkhead due to his contract at the Scottish Premiership giants being set to expire in the summer of 2024.

Hartson stated: "I like David Turnbull. I have always said it, he is a goalscoring midfield player. He adds that 10-14 goals every year for you from midfield. I can see him going to a top Championship team, like Leeds United."

Celtic midfielder David Turnbull.

Known as a cultured midfielder with an eye for goal, Scotland international Turnbull has shown incision when trusted by Brendan Rodgers this campaign, averaging around 2.1 shots and 1.4 key passes per match in the Scottish Premiership (Turnbull statistics – WhoScored).

Given his potential availability, Turnbull could be a worthwhile pick-up for Leeds who still has the potential to develop further as a player; however, it remains to be seen whether Celtic would be willing to sanction his departure in mid-season.

Hardik Pandya gathers momentum with fifty against Mumbai

The India allrounder coming back from injury has the chance to influence a tight game with his bowling on the last day at Wankhede stadium

Hardik Pandya perfects a pull against Morne Morkel•BCCI

The IPL has done funny things to Indian cricket, particularly the fan. How else do you explain lusty cheering for Mumbai Indians Baroda allrounder Hardik Pandya as he tried with all his might to thwart Mumbai’s chances of securing a vital first innings lead at Wankhede stadium? Sure, there is merit in the theory that he is an India player, but MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli apart, not many have such a hold over crowds across the country. If it was a case of conflicted emotions – although there was no sign of it as the small crowd chanted his name like an anthem – they got the best of both worlds. Pandya obliged with a 137-ball 73 but Mumbai clung on to the cliff edge, securing a 29-run lead that may just keep them afloat in the Ranji Trophy.Pandya may have missed a maiden Ranji Trophy hundred, but it was his first major contribution with the bat in red-ball cricket since a whirlwind 93 at the start of the year in Cape Town. (He’d made a fifty against Afghanistan in between, but that came after India’s total had already gone past 300)Baroda had other heroes as well. Aditya Waghmode batted in mode to make 114 off 304 balls and Vishnu Solanki produced a more free flowing 133 to give Pandya the time he needed to find his feet, both literally and figuratively. At lunch he was batting on 3 off 29, struggling for rhythm but untroubled by the bowling as such.Match situations, though, can be fickle, and after cruising for 121 overs and looking set to surpass Mumbai’s 465 by a significant margin, wickets fell, as though through a series of trapdoors. A comfortable 351 for 3 became 378 for 6 when tea was taken, and two overs post resumption Baroda had slipped to a precarious 379 for 7. At that stage, it seemed like they were running out of luck, exemplified by Solanki’s questionable lbw decision earlier in the day, but soon enough Pandya was bowled off a no-ball and it became a level playing field once again.Reprieved on 41, he brought his side within 29 runs of Mumbai’s total before being pinned in front by Royston Dias as he tried to steal a single off the last ball of the over. It was not unlike the position he was in a few months ago at Edgbaston, when India needed 32 to win and Pandya was left with the awkward job of refusing singles when the field was spread, and scampering across when it came up. Eventually he was led to play a shot that wasn’t meant to fetch him runs or protect his stumps and he was dismissed. The difference here is that there’s an innings left and Pandya could enjoy the perks of who he is – an allrounder – and influence the result. While Mumbai would have undoubtedly been the happier side, having taken the lead, given the lack of time left in the game, they were also the only ones left in a position to throw it away – a tendency common among teams batting without purpose on final days. With his two quick wickets before stumps, Pandya has stoked that possibility.

Na próxima rodada, o Náutico enfrenta o Botafogo-SP, no estádio Santa Cruz. Já o Brasil de Pelotas recebe o Guarani, no Bento Freitas. Ambas as partidas serão realizadas no dia 13 de dezembro.

A partida

Chelsea could sign a "future Ballon d’Or winner" worth £80m

Chelsea hadn't messed around this summer. With the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino, a world-class manager, and a whole host of talent acquired to their squad, it felt like the Blues were heading back to their former best.

Yet, after breaking the bank on the likes of Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo, to name a few, they currently find themselves in an unsatisfactory mid-table position with three defeats from their opening eight matches.

While Pochettino will be given time to mould the squad how he wants it, patience on their current stars could wear thin if significant ground hasn't been made on the Champions League places come January, which could lead to more mass spending.

Unsurprisingly, a whole host of stars have already been touted with a winter move to Stamford Bridge, and one of Europe's brightest young talents, Jamal Musiala, is the latest name to be linked.

Are Chelsea interested in Jamal Musiala?

A graduate of Chelsea's youth academy, who departed the club for Bayern Munich aged 16, would make a huge U-turn on his career if he was to return to Stamford Bridge.

According to 90min, Premier League clubs are showing an interest in Musiala, including Manchester City, Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea.

The report details that Bayern remain confident of tying the 20-year-old down to a long-term contract, however, with several clubs enquiring about his availability, a potential bidding war could ensue.

Currently valued at €92.3m (£80m) according to Football Transfers and with another three years left on his contract, the Blues will need to splash the cash in order to lure him to west London, either in January or next summer.

What would Jamal Musiala bring to Chelsea?

One of Chelsea's most fateful mistakes was allowing Musiala to depart for Bayern in 2019 after failing to convince the youngster to commit his future to the London club.

All will be forgiven, however, if the Blues manage to pull off a sensational move to prise the youngster away from Germany and back to England.

Jamal Musiala

The attacking midfield sensation, who has been nominated for the prestigious Golden Boy Award, is the shining light of a German side crying out for a rebuild and an unwavering cog of Bayern's merciless winning machine.

Combining his electric pace and remarkable dribbling to a devastating effect, the youngster has been compared to the great Lionel Messi for how he carries the ball in perpetual motion, breezing past defenders like the ball is stuck to his feet and supplying a relentless end product to match.

With an astonishing 12 goals and 13 assists in 33 Bundesliga matches last term, Musiala showcased why the footballing world is salivating over his talents, seamlessly slotting into pockets of space and appearing to be the perfect heir to Muller's throne.

Lauded as a "future Ballon d'Or" winner by teammate Alphonso Davies for how he's dominated on the world stage at just 20-years-old, Musiala has shown that his potential is limitless.

The youngster's former coach, Andre Martin, reinforced the above back in 2021, saying: "Technically outstanding, very skillful, and a player who can score all types of goals, inside and outside the box. And he's a great dribbler and likes to take players on, as he did against Schalke. He later became a No.10 and has become as much of a creator as a goalscorer."

The description of his qualities suggests that Chelsea must reverse the mistake they made four years ago and go all out to sign one of the best young talents on the planet.

Man Utd wonderkid Kobbie Mainoo called up to England senior squad for first time after majestic performance in FA Cup classic against Liverpool

Manchester United youngster Kobbie Mainoo has been added to the latest England squad after his stellar display in the FA Cup against Liverpool.

Midfielder brought in to Gareth Southgate's setupInitially part of Three Lions' U21 squadMade 14 Premier League appearances for Man Utd this seasonWHAT HAPPENED?

Gareth Southgate has responded to the widespread clamour for the teenager to be brought into the England setup, with the Three Lions announcing that he will be part of the squad for their friendlies against Brazil and Belgium. Mainoo turned in a star performance as Erik ten Hag's United beat Liverpool 4-3 in an instant classic FA Cup quarter-final encounter on Sunday.

Mainoo's call-up comes as an apparent U-turn from Southgate, who preached patience around the teenager as recently as last week, when announcing his initial squad for the March camp. The manager had previously called up Declan Rice, Conor Gallagher and Jordan Henderson, who all play in the same position, with Mainoo initially named in the U21s squad.

WHAT GARETH SOUTHGATE SAID

Southgate highlighted Mainoo's quality last week: "He's doing really well for a young player. He's a good footballer – you can see that. And he's getting some fabulous experience with Manchester United at the moment. And he looks a really good character."

The midfielder will join the England setup ahead of Saturday's meeting with Brazil and will hope to make his senior international debut before attention turns to the game against Belgium three days later. After that, he will return to club duty for the Red Devils, when they take on Brentford in the Premier League on March 30.

Aston Villa: £4.5m flop has become a title winner since leaving Villa Park

These days, Aston Villa are unlikely to be too bothered about their goalkeeping situation – seeing as World Cup winner Emi Martinez is part of a great setup that has rewarded the Lions with a first involvement in European football in over a decade.

However, the Villans would be refreshed to hear that they're not the only ones who have taken the rough with the smooth before coming good in recent seasons. Step forward, Pierluigi Gollini.

How much did Aston Villa sell Pierluigi Gollini for?

Gollini signed for then-Champiosnhip Aston Villa in 2015. The young 'keeper had had a promising Serie A season with Hellas Verona, and showed why he'd been involved with the youth academies of Fiorentina and even Manchester United.

However, in Birmingham, things didn't exactly materialise for the 6 foot 4 stopper with Aston Villa struggling to bounce back from relegation to the second tier under Roberto Di Matteo.

Pairing some key Gollini mistakes as well as the eventual sacking of the manager who bought him – the keeper fell further and further down the pecking order.

Pierluigi Gollini in action for Aston Villa in the Championship.

When Steve Bruce arrived, Mark Bunn was preferred for the 2016 festive period. Then, Sam Johnstone came in on loan in the January window from Manchester United – all but cementing the club's intentions to get Gollini gone.

Atalanta obliged and took him on loan for 18 months before making the move permanent in June 2018 for what now seems a steal of £4.5m.

Where is Pierluigi Gollini now?

In Bergamo, Gollini steadily became a constant feature in a side of often-cult players that achieved great league placements for La Dea.

After gradually surpassing Erit Berisha's spot as number one, Gollini spent two terms in the team that finished third in 2019/20, and 2020/21. In Atalanta's debut Champions League campaign, Gollini featured in every group game as they finished second.

Soccer Football – Serie A – Juventus v Atalanta – Allianz Stadium, Turin, Italy – December 16, 2020 Atalanta’s Pierluigi Gollini celebrates after Juventus’ Cristiano Ronaldo fails to score a penalty REUTERS/Massimo Pinca

In the 19/20 campaign, Gollini kept eight clean sheets. He then beat that in 20/21 with ten as the rest of the league saw what a capable keeper Aston Villa had let go.

This prompted admittedly inconsistent loans to both Tottenham and Fiorentina before he settled again on loan with Napoli.

The Italian giants have taken Gollini on loan twice with the potential for a permanent move – and his form when given the chance, and support to the group, has kept him at the club. When he got the opportunity in Napoli's Serie A winning campaign ahead of regular Alex Meret – Gollini kept two clean sheets in four appearances. Impressive work indeed.

Now, despite being lauded "as among the hottest goalkeeping prospects to come out of Italy", before only spending six months at Aston Villa – Gollini's story shows that persistent determination and a clearly endearing nature can get you where you want to go.

Maybe after all, it looks as if the 'keeper can keep repaying Roberto Di Matteo's judgement: "Gollini is a highly-rated goalkeeper in Italy, he's young, a good shot-stopper, he comes for crosses, he's good with his feet."

Indeed, perhaps that sale of just £4.5m was a mistake after all. Imagine him and Martinez together…

Tottenham: Levy "ready to battle" for "cut-price" Spurs signing

Tottenham Hotspur and chairman Daniel Levy by extension are apparently "ready" to do battle for a "cut-price" Spurs signing in January.

Who have Spurs signed 2023?

Ange Postecoglou has watched Levy bring in seven new additions over the summer window, with goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, young centre-back Ashley Phillips, defender Micky van de Ven, playmaker Maddison, winger Manor Solomon, striker Alejo Veliz and forward Brennan Johnson joining before September 1.

The north Londoners' host of fresh faces will replace the departed Harry Kane, Sergio Reguilon, Joe Rodon, Djed Spence, Harry Winks, Alfie Devine, Troy Parrott, Dane Scarlett, Davinson Sanchez and Tanguy Ndombele who have all moved elsewhere on either permanent or loan deals.

Postecoglou's reign has been one of real promise following this busy transfer period, as Tottenham sit second in the Premier League table with three wins out of their opening four matches.

Imperious victories over the likes of Bournemouth, Man United and Burnley mean Spurs go into the international break with huge momentum behind them – to mentioned a renewed sense of optimism following Antonio Conte's disastrous final season in charge.

Postecoglou has brought the return of exciting, attack-minded football to N17 – with the Australian recently explaining his philosophy to Sky Sports.

That's the beauty of our game," Postecoglou said.

"The beauty of football is that there are so many ways you can have success, so many ways you can set up your team, so many ways you can counteract the opposition.

"I'm probably at one extreme and there are others at the other extreme and we can both have success in this game.

"I think especially with a football club like this, that has consistently looked for that in their teams, they've loved the entertainers, there's a connection there with that kind of football."

Will Tottenham sign anyone in January?

Life in north London is exciting again after this fine start to the campaign, but despite late pushes, Spurs failed to bring in a back-up centre-back after van de Ven.

Reliable media sources suggested that was their aim at the time, and Tottenham were heavily linked with a deadline day move for Bournemouth's Lloyd Kelly.

The 24-year-old was subject to very late window interest from Spurs and Postecoglou, with journalist Pete O'Rourke now sharing an update on the situation.

Lloyd Kelly

Writing for Football Insider, the journalist claims Postecoglou's side are "ready to battle" for Kelly's services in the winter window but face stiff competition from rivals Liverpool.

It's added that the centre-back could be available for a "cut-price" fee, given he's entered the final year of his contract which expires in 2024.

How good is Lloyd Kelly?

Kelly ranked in Bournemouth's top three for clearances and blocks made per 90 last season, according to WhoScored.

These stats perhaps suggest why Tottenham are keen on the player, with former Cherries boss Scott Parker also once lavishing praise on the Englishman.

"I think Lloyd Kelly has got the attributes and the ability to be a top Premier League centre-half," said Parker.

"And I think we are blessed and very, very lucky to have someone of his quality, really.

"You take players like Lloyd probably for granted in the sense of he makes things look very effortless and easy."

Rashid Khan, top order give Afghanistan 4-1 series win

Fifties from Javed Ahmadi and Rahmat Shah, and the all-round brilliance of Rashid Khan, consigned Zimbabwe to a 146-run loss

ESPNcricinfo staff19-Feb-2018
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsAFP

Fifties from Javed Ahmadi and Rahmat Shah, and the all-round brilliance of Rashid Khan, powered Afghanistan to a 4-1 series win in Sharjah. Their margin of victory – 146 runs – was their second highest in ODI cricket. Their biggest had come in this series as well, in the first game. After opting to bat, Afghanistan had a steady start with Ahmadi and Rahmat putting on 129 for the second wicket following the early dismissal of Mohammad Shahzad. Their partnership contributed 54% of Afghanistan’s total. Ahmadi was particularly fluent against spin, scoring 55 runs off 53 balls. Rahmat hit Chisoro for 30 runs off 23 balls but Sikandar Raza had him slicing a catch to long-off for 59. Rahmat ended the series as the top-scorer with 272 runs in four innings at an average of 68. Three overs later, Ahmadi was run out for 76 off 87 balls. From 142 for 1, Afghanistan slumped to 177 for 7. Rashid’s 29-ball 43, though, hauled the team to 241 for 9.In reply, Zimbabwe collapsed to 95 all out in 32.1 overs with only two of their batsmen passing 20. Rashid took 3 for 13 to finish as the leading wicket-taker in the series with 16 wickets, at an outstanding average of 7.93.Brendan Taylor (27) and Craig Ervine (34) rebuilt the chase briefly with a 46-run stand, before Zimbabwe imploded. They lost their last eight wickets for 23 runs with 16-year old Mujeeb Zadran, Shapoor Zadran, Sharafuddin Ashraf, Mohammad Nabi, and Rashid sharing the spoils. Rashid took three wickets in six balls to wrap up the tail.
