"Fantastic" Derby player set to miss rest of the season after injury update

As they look to seal promotion back to the Championship, Derby County have been handed a fresh injury blow, with a key player not expected to return for the rest of the season.

Derby injury news

With Bolton Wanderers up next, Derby sit just one point above their upcoming opponents and in the final automatic promotion place. Putting it simply, the stakes couldn't get much higher this weekend, which makes the Rams' latest injury news all the more frustrating. Paul Warne will be hoping that his squad can do enough to at least avoid defeat and maintain control in the push for promotion.

As things stand, there are just eight games left of the League One season with everything to play for. In that run, the best-case scenario is a full squad to choose from, but Warne will be without eight players for at least some of, if not all of the run-in, as per The Derby Telegraph.

Warne revealed the latest twist prior to his side's all-important clash this weekend when speaking to the media. He told BBC Sport that Ryan Nyambe's injury required surgery, which has ended his season.

Now in the final stretch of games, Derby will have to cope without their right-back and seek replacements elsewhere in the squad.

"Fantastic" Nyambe's injury is a frustrating blow

Signed on a free deal following his release from Wigan Athletic in September, Nyambe has quickly proved to be a bargain addition to Warne's squad at Pride Park, starting 17 games and even earning a place at the African Cup of Nations with Namibia in the process. His season is now over, however, following the need for an operation.

Before that surgery, there may have been some hope that the 26-year-old would make an injury comeback at a vital stage of the season, but Derby will ultimately never know.

Birmingham manager Tony Mowbray will know exactly what Derby will miss in the absence of Nyambe, having showered the right-back with praise during his Blackburn Rovers days, via the Lancashire Telegraph.

Leeds had a howler by selling "superstar" who’s better than Meslier

Leeds United went in a new direction last year as they decided to part ways with sporting director Victor Orta and brought in Daniel Farke to be the club's new head coach.

The Whites moved on from the Spanish chief, in May, shortly before their relegation from the Premier League became official after his decisions played a part in their struggles in the top-flight.

Orta had replaced Marcelo Bielsa with Jesse Marsch and then subsequently brought in Javi Gracia, in managerial changes that ultimately failed to keep the club in the division by the end of the 2022/23 campaign.

Former Leeds sporting director Victor Orta.

The now-Sevilla mastermind had his fair share of masterclasses and disasterclasses in the transfer market when it came to selling and buying players.

Georginio Rutter, who has hit his stride this season, was snapped up for a club-record £35.5m in January of last year but did not hit the ground running to keep the team in the Premier League.

One move that Orta made that may have gone under the radar as a big howler by the Spaniard, however, was the sale of goalkeeper Elia Caprile, who has thrived since moving on from Elland Road and is now better than Illan Meslier.

Elia Caprile's time with Leeds United

The Whites swooped to sign the impressive young shot-stopper from Italian side Chievo in the January transfer window in 2020 under Marcelo Bielsa.

He had kept seven clean sheets in 40 appearances for Chievo's U19 side and seemingly did enough to convince Leeds that they needed to add him to their academy set-up.

The young gem did not make a single appearance for the Yorkshire-based outfit, at first-team or youth level, during the second half of the 2019/20 campaign.

However, he did go on to play 19 matches for the U21s throughout the 2020/21 season and kept five clean sheets for the youthful Leeds side.

During that campaign, Caprile played against Barrow first-team in the EFL Trophy for the Whites and caught the eye with an impressive display, as you can see in the table below.

His form for Leeds at U21 level attracted loan interest from Serie C side Pro Patria, who snapped him up for the 2021/22 campaign on a temporary basis.

Caprile went on to play 39 matches in all competitions for the third division side and kept 13 shutouts in total, including 12 in 36 league outings.

The Italian gem's performances were seemingly not good enough to convince Orta and Leeds that he had a long-term future at Elland Road as he was sold to Serie B outfit Bari for an undisclosed fee in the summer of 2022.

Elia Caprile's progression since leaving Leeds

The Italy U21 international immediately hit the ground running with his new club during the 2022/23 campaign as he became a star in the second division.

Caprile made 37 appearances in the Serie B and caught the eye with an impressive 14 clean sheets and a fantastic save success rate of 77% for Bari.

The talented youngster, who was lauded as a "superstar" by scout Jacek Kulig, only conceded 0.9 goals per match, and saved two of the five penalties he faced, as he provided a strong and consistent presence between the sticks for his side.

Elia Caprile's 2022/23 statistics.

His sublime performances in goal for Bari in his first season after moving away from Elland Road caught the eye of Italian giants Napoli last summer.

The Serie A champions saw enough from him in the second tier to splash out a fee of £6m to secure his services ahead of the 2023/24 campaign, and they sent him out on loan to Empoli to develop further.

He started the current season on the bench but finally got his chance to play towards the end of December and has not looked back since, with a string of fantastic displays.

As you can see in the table above, Caprile has been an impressive performer between the sticks in the top division of Italian football, as players have found it very difficult to get the better of him.

Since the start of last season, the 22-year-old colossus has conceded 4.2 fewer goals than expected based on the post-shot xG value of the shots on his goal, which shows that he has been an above-average shot-stopper in the Serie B and the Serie A.

The stats that show Caprile is better than Meslier

Whilst Caprile is currently starring in the Serie A for Empoli, having been signed by the champions Napoli, Meslier has endured a mixed campaign with Leeds in the Championship.

The French titan came into this season off the back of two poor years in the Premier League with the Whites, as the young talent struggled as a shot-stopper.

Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

Meslier conceded a staggering 16.2 more than expected in the top-flight during the 2021/22 campaign, and 12.4 more than expected during the following season as Leeds were relegated from the division.

This means that the left-footed goalkeeper let in 28.6 more goals than the average shot-stopper would have been expected to based on the quality of shots on his goal, which illustrates how poorly the youngster performed.

This season, the 23-year-old gem has played 31 times in the Championship for Leeds and saved 68% of the efforts against him, which has led to 0.5 more goals conceded than expected based on post-shot xG.

As you can see in the table above, Caprile has been far more impressive between the sticks in the top-flight of Italian football than Meslier has been in the second division of English football.

The 22-year-old ace, who is one year younger than the Leeds number one, has been an above-average shot-stopper and incredibly efficient in his sweeping actions, whereas Farke's first-choice has room to improve in both of those aspects of his game.

Overall, their respective statistics in recent years, and this season in particular, given the difference in level they are playing at, suggest that Caprile is a much better, and younger, goalkeeper who Orta had a big howler with when he sold him to Bari in 2022.

Leeds may now live to rue their decision to part ways with the Italian colossus, whose current trajectory has him on course to become an excellent player at the top level, whereas Meslier has been average at best – as a shot-stopper – in the Championship.

Report shares new Ivan Toney update this weekend involving Arsenal scouts

With the January transfer window now closed, Arsenal's attention has already turned to the summer, when they could once again splash the cash on reinforcements. The Gunners have been linked with several names in the last few weeks, but this weekend's Premier League action revealed another clue in the direction that Mikel Arteta and Edu Gaspar are looking.

Arsenal transfer news

Those at The Emirates seemingly have two priorities this summer; replace Thomas Partey and find a consistent goalscorer. Partey could be set to leave Arsenal and has proven to be an unreliable option due to constant injury concerns in the last year or so. Gabriel Jesus' lack of goals – scoring just eight in all competitions so far in the current campaign – has created a need for more clinical options, meanwhile, opening the door for options.

When it comes to a Partey replacement, the names mentioned have mainly been Everton's Amadou Onana and Real Sociedad's Martin Zubimendi. The Gunners were linked with Onana throughout the January window but failed to push on and secure the Belgian's signature. When the summer transfer window arrives, he may well be presented as a potential option once more.

On the striker front, all paths seem to be leading to Ivan Toney. According to a new report from Graeme Bailey for HITC, Arsenal scouts were in attendance to watch Toney against Wolverhampton Wanderers, as well as the Midlands club's winger Pedro Neto.

The scouts picked a good day to watch the Englishman, given that he got himself on the scoresheet and was handed an 8/10 rating by The Daily Mail's Tara Anson-Walsh in the Bees' 2-0 victory.

It looks set to be some chase for Toney this summer in a race that Arsenal will hope to win and put an end to their striker woes, in the process.

"Special" Toney could solve Arsenal's problem

If Arsenal are looking for a ruthless goalscorer in front of goal, then a player who was only outscored by Erling Haaland and Harry Kane in the Premier League last season is the answer. Toney's 20 goals caught plenty of attention and if there was a worry that he would struggle to get back to his best after a lengthy ban, then his three goals in his first four games back should have eased those concerns.

Brentford manager Thomas Frank knows all about Toney's ability, praising the forward a few weeks ago as he prepared for his return to action against Nottingham Forest. Frank said:

"I'm looking into the eyes of a player that's very committed. He will start tomorrow [against Nottingham Forest] and will captain the side. I'm pretty sure he's ready.

"He's a special character, a fantastic person to be around. The energy he brings, the smile, the positivity, is a massive thing. He drags people – he wants to win. It's a massive boost. It's like a new signing. There's an argument for him being the second-best striker in the league, in my opinion."

Journalist says West Ham will now make imminent approach for £13m forward

West Ham are primed to make an imminent move for one club's "brilliant" forward as David Moyes wrestles with a shortage of attacking options.

West Ham lacking forward depth

Moyes is currently facing the prospect of a real forward shortage at West Ham, as concerns surround star winger Jarrod Bowen following an injury he sustained in their 1-1 FA Cup draw with Bristol City on Sunday.

ExWHUemployee says West Ham could move for "scintillating" 10-goal forward

He’s been in fine form this season.

ByEmilio Galantini Jan 6, 2024

Summer signing Mohammed Kudus is representing Ghana at the Africa Cup of Nations right now as well, and it is believed striker Michail Antonio has suffered a setback in his recovery from a knee injury.

If Bowen's injury is a serious one, it would deal a hammer blow to Moyes who would have just the out-of-favour Danny Ings and youngster Divin Mubama to choose from as number nine alternatives.

West Ham fear Antonio could be out for six weeks and they may well be forced to dip into the market for short-term striker options (The Guardian), with Moyes also chasing the signing of a winger. The likes of Said Benrahma, Pablo Fornals and Maxwel Cornet have failed to impress overall when called upon, with the need for more attacking options looking a serious one at West Ham.

West Ham United forwardSaid Benrahma.

According to club insider ExWHUemployee, West Ham have their eyes on the likes of Norwich City Jonathan Rowe among a plethora of other potential targets, while Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that they're real admirers of Ajax captain Steven Bergwijn.

Now, as per transfer reporter Dean Jones for Sportslens, another interesting name to have emerged is Leeds forward Wilfried Gnonto.

West Ham "primed" to make Gnonto move

The journalist now claims West Ham are "primed" to make an approach for Gnonto "in the coming days" as Moyes seeks attacking reinforcements.

The Italy international, who starred for Leeds at points in the Premier League last season, has been used more irregularly under Daniel Farke this term but both the Hammers and Fulham could offer him a way out.

West Ham considered him in the summer window, but Gnonto wasn't allowed to depart as Leeds didn't want to cash-in on their star asset.

That could change this window, as it is reported elsewhere that the Whites will sell for Gnonto for around £13 million (Il Romanista.it).

Despite his lack of starting opportunities this season, Leeds boss Farke praised the 20-year-old for his unwavering attitude.

"What I like a lot about Willy at the moment is his attitude," said Farke earlier this month.

"He was always used to shine, always the posterboy. It’s not easy when he’s on the bench, but when we score and do positive stuff, the first one celebrating on the pitch is Willy."

Leeds United vs Coventry City in the Championship.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones also expressed his shock that Gnonto isn't starting as many games this season.

"I'm really surprised a player that is this good is not in the starting lineup at a Championship club," he said.

"Especially when he was given a second chance at Leeds to make things work and was forgiven for that little moment he had in the summer. He is a brilliant player."

Everton can forget Onana by signing £40m "monster" who is "all action"

Everton are on a poor run of form at the moment, having failed to win in five games in all competitions, including three consecutive defeats in the Premier League.

The Toffees are lacking goals up top and only five teams in England’s top-flight have scored fewer times than the Merseyside club this term, but manager Sean Dyche may look to rectify this issue before the January transfer window closes.

Nevertheless, having spent £25.75m on Beto in the summer, the Everton board are unlikely to splash more money on a new frontman this winter, although Dyche could add goals elsewhere.

Everton transfer news – Scott McTominay

According to FootballTransfers, Everton are hoping to manoeuvre a deal with Manchester United which would see Scott McTominay moving to Goodison Park, with Amadou Onana heading in the opposite direction. The outlet are claiming that the Merseysiders are hamstrung by FFP regulations so a swap deal may be beneficial for all parties.

It was reported by The Athletic during the summer that the Toffees were interested in signing the Scotland international but the Red Devils were said to be holding out for a £40m fee which made a deal with any club difficult.

Incidentally, McTominay has gone on to become United’s joint-top scorer this season with six goals in what has been a dismal campaign so far for the English giants. However, a move to Everton may now finally be on the cards.

Scott McTominay’s stats this season

Having made his debut in 2017 under Jose Mourinho, McTominay has been a mainstay in Manchester United's first-team under every single manager, making 232 appearances in total for the 13-time Premier League champions. Former head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer even described the academy product as a "physical monster", while Portugal boss Roberto Martinez hailed McTominay as an "all-action" midfielder.

However, McTominay has primarily played in a more defensive role. In his entire career in the first team, the 27-year-old has played 130 times as a holding midfielder whose primary job was to protect the backline.

Nevertheless, United manager Erik ten Hag found a new role for the Scot this season, utilising him in a more advanced position, crashing into the box with late runs to get on the end of crosses which has been relatively successful. From McTominay's 25 career goals for Man United, six have come this season alone and he is just one goal away from equalling his best-ever record for the club.

Everton could sign £30m Harrison upgrade who's a "nightmare for defenders"

The Toffees could bolster their attacking department this winter.

ByAdam Scully Jan 7, 2024

McTominay's newfound role at Old Trafford has been compared to that of his former teammate and ex-Everton star Marouane Fellaini by The Athletic journalist Adam Crafton.

Like McTominay, Fellaini was often used as a focal point inside the opposition's box, where he scored 22 times for United in 177 matches – after plundering 33 goals and 26 assists in 177 games during a particularly fruitful spell at Goodison.

Given Everton's goalscoring issues this season, Dyche could potentially use McTominay in a similar manner to Ten Hag, deploying the midfielder in Onana's position but allowing him to get forward and attack crosses, particularly delivered by Dwight McNeil who is averaging a whopping 6.97 crosses per 90 this season and is the Toffees' top assister with five in total.

Furthermore, McTominay would be a massive upgrade right now on Onana and is outperforming the Belgian offensively and defensively this term, as is indicated in the table below.

Onana could be better than his potential successor in the long-term, but right now, McTominay is the perfect player for Dyche in what could be a gruelling relegation dogfight as he can defend as well as score goals. If Everton are to lose Onana, gaining McTominay in his prime won't be the worst deal in the world.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Forest were left furious after their 2-0 Premier League defeat to the Toffees due to three separate incidents which they believe should have led to a penalty being awarded. The club issued an extraordinary statement on social media after the game criticising the "extremely poor decisions" and claiming they had "warned the PGMOL that the VAR is a Luton fan" ahead of kick-off. Forest also asked for the VAR audio to be released and expect the PGMOL to accept the request but it will not be made public, according to .

    THE EXPLANATION

VAR audio was previously made public after Luis Diaz's goal for Liverpool was wrongly disallowed for offside against Tottenham in September. However, in that incident the decision was made due to a "factual communication error" but this has not been the case with Forest and the three penalty calls in question. There is a possibility that the audio could still be made public if it is used in the programme which features Howard Webb reviewing contentious decisions.

  • WHAT NUNO ESPIRITO SANTO SAID

Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo backed the club's decision to issue a statement after the match. He told reporters: "Yes I share the view because I saw the images. When we go back to the dressing room, we have access to the images and you can see it so clearly and you don’t understand why the decisions were against us.

“I think the situation with Gio Reyna in the first half is a clear one, the handball we can ask if it’s not but the ball goes to Chris Wood and there is another incident with Ashley Young. I share the feeling of the club because it’s not only this game, it’s been a while that we’ve had poor decisions against us. It’s not an excuse but we are not comfortable with the work of the referees.”
