Crystal Palace: Rob Street listed for loan

Crystal Palace have made young forward Rob Street available for loan for the second half of the season, as per Football Insider.

The lowdown

The 20-year-old ‘target man’, in the words of The Athletic’s Matt Woosnam, has made 31 appearances for Palace’s under-23 side and bagged 13 goals. He penned his first professional deal with the Eagles in the summer of 2020.

He spent the second half of last season with National League outfit Torquay United, but only made one start and five appearances overall.

The latest

According to Football Insider, Palace envisage Street as part of their first team going forward, but a source from the south London club told the publication that, for now, the priority is getting him regular games at senior level.

In order to accomplish that goal, they are looking to loan him out, and ‘several EFL clubs’ have already lodged enquiries.

The verdict

Another loan move, this time to a club in the Football League, looks the right step for Street.

He is clearly highly regarded at Palace, deservedly so given his under-23 exploits, and one of his coaches has even compared him to a young Ian Wright, who went on to rack up more than a century of Premier League goals.

However, it seems they don’t quite think he’s ready to feature for Patrick Vieira’s side just yet. He was named on the bench twice in the early part of the season, but he is still awaiting a full Eagles debut. The right loan move will hopefully prove a springboard towards that landmark being ticked off in 2022.

Vieira must axe Benteke against Burnley

Crystal Palace will be aiming to extend their six-game unbeaten run when they take on Burnley in the Premier League over the weekend.

The enticing encounter at Turf Moor is set to pit two teams with contrasting styles against each other following the arrival of Patrick Vieira in south London, with the 45-year-old preferring a possession-orientated approach.

As per FBref.com, the Eagles have averaged 51.2% of the ball in their opening 11 top-flight fixtures of the season, compared to Burnley’s 38.7% – the second-lowest total in the division.

Vieira’s charges have also attempted the sixth-highest number of short passes (2020) in the Premier League and the 12th-highest number of long balls (999), clearly illustrating how the Frenchman wants his side to play.

The Clarets, on the other hand, have tried to pull off the fourth-lowest number of short passes (1416) and the third-highest total of long balls (1168).

Therefore, it would perhaps be wise if Vieira didn’t attempt to play Sean Dyche’s men at their own game, instead focussing on the slick interplay that helped them carve open Manchester City and Wolves in recent weeks.

As a result, in-form striker Christian Benteke – who Alan Shearer said was “scared to miss” last season – must be axed from the starting lineup after featuring from the off last time out, changing the game in Palace’s favour.

No side in the top-flight has won a higher percentage of their aerial duels than Burnley (55.2%) this season, and floating crosses into the opposition box for the big Belgian will suit Ben Mee and James Tarkowski down to the ground.

The centre-back pairing have won an average of 3.8 and four aerial duels per league game respectively in 2021/22, as per WhoScored, and although Benteke has bettered those tally’s (4.5), he’s unlikely to receive much support from his teammates.

While the £120k-per-week bully has been dominating defenders with his head, his colleagues haven’t enjoyed anywhere near as much success, with the second-best headers, Marc Guehi and Cheikhou Kouyate, winning just 1.7 duels.

Consequently, Palace’s best opportunity to claim the three points on Saturday would be to avoid pitting Benteke up against the Burnley battering rams and instead opting for the more mobile, elusive and intelligent options at their disposal.

The likes of Odsonne Edouard and Michael Olise have already shown themselves to be genuine threats at this level following their summer arrivals, and attacking prowess could prove pivotal as Vieira aims to secure a third consecutive victory for the first time during his Palace tenure.

Celtic handed Forster transfer opportunity

Celtic have been handed an opportunity to sign reported summer transfer target Fraser Forster once again in January.

What’s the talk?

According to recent reports, Southampton look set to release the 33-year-old goalkeeper upon the expiry of his contract at the end of the current campaign, something which Football Scotland claim could open the door for Celtic to swoop for the former England international, either in January or next summer.

The report added that, with both Vasilis Barkas and Scott Bain expected to leave Parkhead in the near future, Ange Postecoglou may well be in the market for a new goalkeeper in the winter market. A move for the player with whom Celtic were heavily linked during the summer could once again be a viable option for the 56-year-old Bhoys manager.

Postecoglou must move

While Celtic did complete the £1.08m signing of Joe Hart this summer, with the 34-year-old having impressed for the Hoops so far this season, Forster would still be a fantastic signing for Postecoglou to get over the line in January.

Indeed, while the £2.7m-rated stopper is yet to feature in the Premier League for Southampton this term, the 33-year-old has nevertheless demonstrated over his three appearances in the Carabao Cup that he is still a top-level option between the sticks – keeping one clean sheet, making 14 saves and earning an average SofaScore match rating of 7.90 in the competition.

The most impressive of these performances came against Chelsea, with the £72k-per-week ‘keeper making an astonishing 13 stops, saving a penalty and earning a SofaScore match rating of 9.8 in Saints’ victory over the Premier League leaders.

As such, it is clear to see that the man who Bain dubbed an “unbelievable” player would make an excellent addition to Postecoglou’s options in the position this winter. Considering that Southampton would likely be more than willing to offload Forster for a minimal transfer fee, a move for the 33-year-old would appear most advisable for the Hoops manager.

Cricinfo staff05-Aug-2009Matt Mason has signed a one-year contract extension with Worcestershire, and will combine his playing role with that of bowling coach at the club.”I am absolutely thrilled to sign a contract for a further year. The plans the club has for the future excite me and I want to be part of that future,” Mason said.”I enjoy my part-time role as bowling coach but still feel I have much to offer as a player. The club has been very good to me and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.”Steve Rhodes, director of cricket at Worcestershire, said: “Yet again Matt has proved to be one of our front-line bowlers this season and I am delighted he has agreed to carry on playing for at least another season while continuing to have such a valuable input with our young bowling attack in his coaching role.”The 35-year-old from Australia is Worcestershire’s leading wicket-taker in the Championship so far this season, with 29 to date.

Tottenham linked with Martinez move

Tottenham are reportedly interested in signing Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa, in what would be a controversial move given his past connections in north London.

The Lowdown: Martinez earns Messi praise

The 29-year-old’s career has gone from strength to strength since leaving Spurs’ bitter rivals Arsenal, with the Gunners seemingly happy to allow him to leave.

Martinez has shone between the sticks for Villa and most prominently Argentina, proving to be the penalty shootout hero in their Copa America semi-final triumph over Colombia in the summer.

Lionel Messi called his compatriot ‘one of the best goalkeepers in the world’, following their eventual win in the competition, while he was even nominated for the Yashin trophy, such has been his incredible form at Villa Park.

The Latest: Spurs keen on move

According to The Independent, Spurs are eyeing up a move for Martinez next summer as a replacement for the ageing Hugo Lloris, in what is described as a ‘spectacularly divisive transfer’.

The Argentine’s current Villa deal doesn’t expire in the summer of 2024, however, and a deal could be ‘very difficult to negotiate’ – he is valued at £31.5m by Transfermarkt.

Alex Remiro (Real Sociedad), Alex Remet (Napoli) and Sam Johnstone (West Brom) are also mentioned as possible targets if a deal for Martinez can’t be struck.

The Verdict: Get him in

Martinez could be a superb signing for Spurs if they managed to snap him up, no doubt infuriating some Arsenal fans as an added bonus.

With Lloris now approaching 35 years of age, a long-term replacement could be required and the Villa man fits the bill perfectly, boasting 15 clean sheets last season, the third-most in the top flight.

He is in and around his prime years and seems to be improving all the time for club and country, keeping three clean sheets in the league this season and even saving two penalties, although one of which Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored from the rebound.

Newcastle targeting Nick Pope

An update has emerged regarding Newcastle’s interest in Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope.

What’s the talk?

According to Caught Offside, the Magpies have identified the Clarets netminder as a key target heading into the January transfer window.

The report claims that the Tynesiders believe he could be the start of their rebuild under PIF, with Burnley said to want £40m for the shot-stopper.

Key issue

Newcastle could solve a key issue in the squad by signing Pope in the January transfer window or next summer ahead of the 2022/23 campaign. The Magpies have struggled to find a consistent, reliable number one as Karl Darlow and Freddie Woodman have made four and three Premier League starts respectively this term.

Martin Dubravka missed 16 matches through injury last season and has already been absent for six games in this campaign. Darlow also has a history of injuries at St James’ Park, including one knock which kept him out of seven games in the 2020/21 season.

Pope, on the other hand, has played in 77 of Burnley’s last 83 Premier League games. This shows that he has been consistently available to feature, whilst also producing excellent performances on the pitch.

Clarets manager Sean Dyche previously heaped praise on the England international and labeled him as a ‘monster’ between the sticks, saying: “He’s improving all the time. His voice is getting stronger all the time, he’s getting more and more dominant and, trust me, he’s a monster. When you hear him shout ‘keeper’s!’ you get out the way!”

This highlights how highly the £34k-per-week beast is rated at Burnley, which is no surprise given that he has proven himself to be a match-winner for Dyche in the Premier League. Over the past 12 months, Pope ranks in the top 3% of goalkeepers in Europe’s top five leagues for save percentage (77.2%) and in the top 1% for the percentage of crosses stopped (13.1%).

He also ranks in the top 12% of goalkeepers for post-shot expected goals compared to goals against. This essentially means that he is an excellent shot-stopper in comparison to the majority of goalkeepers in the top five European leagues, which is why he is a match-winner.

Pope has the quality to make saves that others cannot and this can win crucial points for his team over the course of a season. Indeed, in the 2019/20 Premier League, his tally of 15 clean sheets was bettered only by Manchester City’s Ederson.

Therefore, he could come in and instantly be the first-choice number one between the sticks for Newcastle. Not only could he win them matches with his ability, but his consistency in terms of availability could solve a key issue that the club currently has with the injury-prone Darlow and Dubravka.

Everton injury news on Richarlison

An injury expert has now said that Richarlison could be out for Everton for longer than initially expected.

The Lowdown: Richarlison injured

Richarlison has missed the Goodison Park faithful’s last two games after picking up an injury in their 3-1 win at home to Burnley in the Premier League a couple of weeks ago.

It is not known exactly how long he will be out for, but the Merseyside club will be keeping a close eye on his progress with another international break set to come in October.

The Latest: Injury expert on Richarlison

Speaking to Football Insider, Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries website and has a background in medicine and data analysis, has now said that Richarlison could be held back until after the international break has finished, despite mentions of him only being out for ‘two or three weeks’:

“It was an impact injury after a tackle from James Tarkowski.

“It was Richarlison’s ankle but the actual issue is knee related. It looks like there might have been a hyperextension of the knee.

“He did continue for a bit but couldn’t complete the game. Benitez came out and said he has been involved in some elements of training but doesn’t feel comfortable.

“He wasn’t able to complete those sessions and there was a decision on the eve of the Aston Villa game to take him out of the limelight.

“There is no definitive timeline in terms of what we are looking at but in around two or three weeks has been mentioned at this point.

“What I would say is we are heading into an international break so even if he is 50/50 it could be he is held back. Just to make sure he is in a good place.”

The Verdict: Potentially big blow

It would certainly be a big blow for Rafa Benitez and the Toffees if Richarlison was forced to sit on the touchlines until after the international break.

In the last two matches that he has missed, the Blues have lost both of them, slumping to a miserable 3-0 defeat away at Aston Villa before being knocked out 10-9 on penalties to Championship team Queens Park Rangers after a 2-2 draw at home (Transfermarkt).

Nonetheless, Benitez will want the Brazil international back in his squad as soon as possible as he can help him pick up some much-needed results.
