Shane Warne’s greatest fear on his return to the Australian Twenty20 scene is embarrassing himself

Shane Warne hadn’t bowled for six months until he went to training on Saturday and his greatest fear on his return to the Australian Twenty20 scene is embarrassing himself. Warne will join up with his old team-mates Glenn McGrath, Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden when they appear in an Australian Cricketers’ Association XI captained by Warne at the Gabba on Sunday.”For us it’s about not embarrassing ourselves, not bowling too many double-bouncers and full-bungers,” he said. Warne, 40, spent part of Saturday afternoon “trying to land a few” at the Gabba nets under the eye of Dennis Lillee, the guest coach. The pair stopped briefly to outline their plans for the match against an Australian XI led by Michael Clarke. And it was just long enough for Warne to doubt the West Indies’ credentials for the three-match series against Australia, which starts on Thursday, and Lillee to defend the future of Test cricket. While Greg Chappell, the guest coach of the Australian XI, fears for the five-day game, Lillee is confident it will remain strong. “Something that has lasted for nearly 150 years, I don’t think it’s in danger in the short term,” Lillee said.Warne believes the West Indians face too much of a challenge to upset Australia, despite the hosts’ current ranking as the world’s No. 4 team. “Let’s just hope the West Indies surprise us, at the moment their form is pretty ordinary and they need to hopefully lift,” he said. “Otherwise it’s just going to be a summer of enjoying our blokes bat and bowl.”Australian Cricketers’ Association XI Shane Warne (capt), Travis Birt, Lee Carseldine, Adam Gilchrist, Daniel Harris, Matthew Hayden, Jason Krejza, Rhett Lockyear, Graham Manou (wk), Glenn McGrath, Nathan Reardon, Nathan Rimmington.Australian XI Michael Clarke (capt), Cameron White, George Bailey, Brad Haddin (wk), David Hussey, Andrew McDonald, Clint McKay, Peter Siddle, Steven Smith, Shaun Tait, Adam Voges, David Warner.

Aston Villa: Fans react to Pau Torres links

Steven Gerrard is reportedly keen on bringing Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres to Aston Villa.

That’s according to Spanish outlet Fichajes, and the links have naturally had a number of Villa fans talking on social media.

According to Fichajes earlier this week, Torres is a player who Gerrard admires, with the new Villa boss keen on upgrading his centre-back options. It will cost around €50m (£42m) for Villarreal to part ways with the 24-year-old, who has also been attracting interest from Manchester United and Real Madrid.

Torres appears to be at the top of his game, with a career-high £45m Transfermarkt valuation, and he reached 100 appearances for his current club earlier this month. Notably, his 89.1% passing accuracy rate in La Liga is better than anyone to have started a league match for Villa this term.

Villa fans react

Total Villa relayed Fichajes’ claim regarding Gerrard’s interest in Torres via Twitter early on Thursday morning.

Here is what these Villa supporters had to say in reply to the rumours, with one labelling a possible transfer as ‘immense’.

“Dream waiting to be shattered, Gerrard pull is going to be massive for us and it’s good to we’re looking at players like this not every Rangers player like other papers. Won’t happen but I can see Gerrard pulling in massive players like this for us.”

A bola bateu no peito.

Cloete promoted to ICC TV Umpire Panel

First-class umpire Johan Cloete has been promoted by Cricket South Africa (CSA) to the ICC’s TV Umpire Panel as reward for consistency in domestic cricket. Cloete, who was nominated as one of the umpires of the year at the SA Cricket Awards, will replace Ian Howell.”It feels good to be acknowledged for the hard work I have put in and I’m looking forward to the challenge,” said Cloete, who made his first-class debut in 1993.CSA has also introduced a new initiative to go with the national first-class umpires panel, the emerging umpires panel as well as the match referees panel for the forthcoming season – the pilot panel. CSA has restructured its match officials panels to meet the demands of the increased volume of matches, which will see more umpires on rotation.”It has been encouraging to see the number of young umpires coming through the system, especially previously disadvantaged ones,” said Cloete. “The pilot panel will help to give the less experienced umpires motivation and incentive. We work hard to develop and train the youngsters coming through which proves that umpiring is not only for old men.”Marais Erasmus and Brian Jerling retain their positions on the ICC international panel.

Fase do time atrapalha renovação de contrato?

Bergwijn anonymous in Spurs defeat

Steven Bergwijn endured a disasterclass as Tottenham Hotspur’s second-string were embarrassingly beaten by Dutch outfit Vitesse.

Nuno Santo left the bulk of his first-team stars back in north London ahead of this weekend’s crunch match with local rivals West Ham United in the Premier League but it was a call which failed to pay dividends.

The Lilywhites picked up their first defeat in the UEFA Europa Conference League and slipped to third in Group G, which means they have it all to do to secure qualification into the next round.

Whilst players like Harry Kane and Heung-min Son did not travel, several senior professionals did, including the Dutch international, but he struggled to repay his manager’s faith on his return to the side.

Valued at £26m by CIES Football Observatory, Bergwijn was one of the more costly players in the starting XI in the Netherlands, so you’d expect him to have stepped up and been counted – even more so as he was given a full 90 minutes on the pitch.

Instead, he was absolutely anonymous and offered Spurs very little in attack. 17-year-old striker Dane Scarlett struggled at his young age but that was largely due to a lack of service, so the 5 foot 10 winger also failed his teammates.

As per SofaScore, Bergwijn recorded the second-fewest touches (36) of any starter – even goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini (38) had more – which isn’t an encouraging sign as one is between the sticks and the other is an attacking threat.

Elsewhere, the 24-year-old failed to register a shot on goal and wasn’t successful in any of his two dribbling attempts, which has to be a worrying sign considering the quality of opposition, who on the day were much the better side, of course.

He was also weak in possession, losing the ball 11 times from those 36 touches, whilst he won just two of his six duels (33.3%).

Alasdair Gold at football.london was far from impressed with the winger, who returned to his home country, handing him a 4/10 in his post-match ratings column.

Overall, on the above evidence, the 13-time international endured a shocker at the GelreDome on Thursday night. Nuno will be far from pleased with what he witnessed.

Nuno without two Spurs stars vs NS Mura

Tottenham Hotspur will still be without two first-team players as they return to UEFA Europa Conference League action later this evening…

What’s the word?

Spurs’ form has taken a turn for the worst in recent weeks, losing three straight heavy defeats in the Premier League, whilst they only just salvaged a point against Stade Rennes in their group stage opener two weeks ago.

Nuno Santo will probably be wanting to change things up on the pitch but he’ll be limited in his options as he won’t be able to call upon either Steven Bergwijn or Ryan Sessegnon.

Bergwijn picked up an injury during that clash in France, whilst Sessegnon has been injured since the international break at the start of the month.

“Nothing has changed,” the Portuguese told the club’s official website this week. “Sess and Stevie will not join the group. The rest of the squad is available. We will also bring in some Under-23s to help us, and we go for the game.”

Big setback

This will be hugely frustrating for the 47-year-old and it may leave him a little worried heading into kickoff, even if it is against a team of much lower quality.

Spurs will remember the Dinamo Zagreb clash from last season, which saw the Croatian champions perform a stunning comeback to knock them out of the Europa League, so no team should be taken lightly.

Nuno badly needs to shake things up, so having a player with a point to prove like Sessegnon available would’ve been an interesting option, whilst Bergwijn had started their opening three league games before his injury.

It can’t be that much of a coincidence that the Lilywhites won all three of those games, too.

He is also one of their biggest threats in the final third, having averaged 1.3 key passes and 2.3 shots per game, a feat only bettered by top goalscorer Heung-min Son, as per WhoScored.

Nuno may have to call upon some of the players that have severely let him down in defeats to arch-rivals Arsenal, Chelsea and Crystal Palace in recent weeks.

The Spurs boss is also thought to be under increasing pressure, according to some reports in the press, so it’s crucial that he gets a result and avoids an embarrassing upset against Mura tonight.

Given their recent performances, Nuno may well be gutted to not be able to change his side completely heading into this fixture.

Everton injury news on Richarlison

Many Everton fans have been left buzzing as some news emerged involving Richarlison.

The Goodison Park faithful tweeted a few images of the former Watford ace, confirming he is ‘back in full training’, in what has of course come as a mighty relief to a lot of Merseyside club supporters.

Given that Rafa Benitez has been dealt a double blow with the latest injury news on both Abdoulaye Doucoure and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, it is certainly positive to hear of Richarlison’s return.

The Brazil international has been such a not yet scored for his new club.

Leeds handed Kalvin Phillips boost

Phil Hay has dropped an update on Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips, regarding his injury status heading into the international break.

What’s the latest?

According to The Athletic’s Leeds correspondent, Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips has withdrawn from the England squad with a minor knock.

However, despite that blow, the reporter confirmed a big boost for Leeds in the process.

Hay claims that Phillips has a ‘good chance’ of being fit enough to face Southampton after the international break, with his injury not set to rule him out for a prolonged period of time.

Big boost

This news will leave fans feeling delighted as it is a big boost for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

Losing Phillips for the clash against Southampton, and possibly beyond that, would have been a sizeable blow to the squad and would have left the Argentine coach needing to tinker with his XI to compensate for Phillips’ absence.

The defensive midfielder has been a crucial figure in the Leeds team under Bielsa, with 34 Premier League starts to his name since the beginning of last season. He averaged a sublime WhoScored rating of 7.01 as he bossed the midfield in the top-flight, earning himself recognition for his country in doing so.

England manager Gareth Southgate admitted that he had faith that Phillips would be able to become an important member of his squad at international level. He said.

“He’s been excellent. The way he has taken to international football, it hasn’t surprised us because what we’d seen with Leeds, even in the Championship, we felt could convert into our team.

“We felt he could play an important role with us. To play in the enormity of the matches he did in the summer and play as well as he did is massive credit to him.”

This played out in the summer as the Leeds man played seven times in the European Championships as England lost the final on penalties to Italy.

Whilst this illustrates his quality and shows why his fitness will come as a big boost to Bielsa and leave fans delighted, there is also a lack of depth in his position. Phillips was absent on the opening day of the season against Manchester United and Robin Koch was forced to operate in the holding midfield role, with Leeds losing 5-1 at Old Trafford.

The Whites do not have a natural holding midfielder to cover for Phillips when he is not on the pitch and that is another reason why this injury only being a minor one will delight supporters.

This could also be an area for Victor Orta to look at in the January window as signing a back-up in his position could ease any fears over his availability in the future.

AND in other news, Leeds must sanction swoop for £8.5m gem with “crazy technique”, he’s Raphinha 2.0…

Southampton linked with Sam Johnstone

It seems as if Southampton are already making transfer plans for next summer, with West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone reportedly on their shortlist.

What’s the word?

According to The Athletic’s Southampton correspondent Dan Sheldon, the Saints are targeting a move for the Baggies shot-stopper next summer, as they look for a long-term solution in goal.

It has been suggested for some time now that Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side will add a new goalkeeper to their ranks next summer, with Fraser Forster looking likely to leave when his contract expires at the end of this season, and Johnstone could be a superb replacement.

As it stands, the England international is also set to become a free agent next summer, which suggests that he could be a very appealing option for the Saints in the transfer market.

Would Johnstone be a good signing for Southampton?

The 28-year-old produced some eye-catching saves last season despite West Brom’s relegation and deservedly earned himself a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the European Championships.

[freshpress-quiz id=“594431”]

It is no surprise that Southampton are looking for a new ‘keeper when you consider that they conceded 68 goals in the top-flight last season, whilst Alex McCarthy hasn’t covered himself in glory in his three appearances so far this season, conceding notably soft goals against Everton and Manchester United.

Former Baggies manager Sam Allardyce was full of praise for Johnstone last season, saying:

“He’s one of the best. I think that’s pleasing to see as he’s one of the two most important people in your team.

“The goalscorer is the first and your goalkeeper is the second.

“He’s right up there at the right level and he’d already saved more shots than anybody before yesterday.”

As a full England international, who is just 28-years-old and a player who has already proven himself in the Premier League, Johnstone could be a superb signing for Southampton, especially if he arrives on a free transfer, so Saints fans will surely be delighted with this update from Sheldon.

And, in other news… Hasenhuttl may already have his next JWP in 17 y/o who is “getting stronger every day”
