Mitchell Johnson earns slim lead for Australia

India 405 (Tendulkar 98, Raina 86, Dravid 77, Sehwag 59, Johnson 5-64) trail Australia 428 by 23 runs

Mitchell Johnson arrived just in time as Australia earned a surprising 23-run advantage after India failed to build on a series of promising half-centuries in Mohali. For most of the third day it looked like it would be the hosts who finished with a first-innings lead, but Sachin Tendulkar, Suresh Raina and Rahul Dravid were cut down before the hosts were dismissed for 405.

India were ready to dominate when Johnson struck late to remove MS Dhoni (14), who was given out caught low down by Shane Watson at first slip in a confusing decision, and Harbhajan Singh edged behind next ball. Another key breakthrough came when Raina played back to Johnson and was lbw shortly before the close as part of a collaspe of 5 for 23. The burst left Johnson with 5 for 64 from 20 overs and gained him a sixth five-wicket haul in Tests. It was a timely comeback for the tourists after they experienced difficult periods from their junior and senior opponents. Raina, 23, is 14 years younger than Tendulkar and was happy to take more risks – he out-scored Tendulkar in their stand of 124 – while the older man was typically calculating.Tendulkar first started giving Australians nightmares in 1990-91 and almost 20 years later spent much of the third day introducing himself to some new wearers of baggy greens. At his best Tendulkar has buried Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath, so in reality facing Johnson, Doug Bollinger, Ben Hilfenhaus and Nathan Hauritz was a pretty comfortable assignment. He still made it a thing of beauty at times, particularly with his effortless pushes through cover and his range of sweeps.Tendulkar now has 10 hundreds and 12 half-centuries in 30 Tests against Australia while averaging almost 57. Bollinger and Hilfenhaus had not bowled to him before in a Test, and Hauritz had run into him only once, getting him in Mumbai on debut in 2004.Hilfenhaus watched Tendulkar caress a handful of memorable cover-drives throughout the display and the batsman started the middle session with a clever late cut against the same bowler. Another cover-drive, this time to Bollinger, was special enough for Tendulkar to punch gloves with Dravid, and then it was Hauritz’s turn to gape. A sweep from outside off went to square leg for four and Hauritz’s next ball was even wider, but it travelled to the rope at midwicket.

Smart Stats

  • Mitchell Johnson’s 5 for 64 is his sixth five-for in 37 Tests, but his first in nine matches against India. His previous best against them had been 4 for 70 in Bangalore in 2008.

  • This is the eighth time Sachin Tendulkar has entered the nineties in a Test and not gone on to a century. Only three batsmen have more nineties – Michael Slater (nine), Steve Waugh and Rahul Dravid (ten each).

  • The 124-run stand between Tendulkar and Suresh Raina was the 78th time Tendulkar was involved in a century partnership, which is third in the all-time list, behind Rahul Dravid (82) and Ricky Ponting (79).

  • During the course of their 79-run stand, Tendulkar and Dravid became only the third pair, after Greenidge-Haynes and Hayden-Langer, to score 6000 partnership runs – they’ve scored 6076 in 120 innings at an average of 52.83.

  • It’s also Tendulkar’s 22nd fifty-plus score against Australia in 30 Tests. Only Herbert Sutcliffe (24) and Jack Hobbs (27) have more.

  • Of the 98 runs Tendulkar scored, 30 came in the cover region. Five of his 13 fours were scored through the covers.

Tendulkar was rarely rushed – a couple of thick edges fell short of the slips off Johnson – and after tea he allowed Raina to aim the bigger shots, although he charged Marcus North and hit over mid-off to go into the 90s. He was two short of his 49th century when he pushed across the line at a quicker ball from North and was lbw, walking off in a silent stadium. North could hardly believe his success in his first Test bowl against Tendulkar.Raina, who entered at No.5 due to VVS Laxman’s back problem, continued to impress in his third Test, adding to his previous scores of 120, 62 and 41 not out. Bollinger, finding some fire in the warm conditions, hit Raina on the shoulder early in his innings as the batsman turned his head away. He also survived a missed stumping on 48 and was almost taken at mid-off on 60 when the ball dropped just short of Johnson. In between he crunched boundaries on the up through the offside, collecting 14 fours from 128 balls, including a glance to bring up his half-century. There was a chance Raina would reach his hundred before stumps but he had to tone down when Johnson removed two team-mates and Hauritz bowled Zaheer Khan. The change in mood was terminal. The first two rewards of the day went to Bollinger (2 for 49), who bowled the nightwatchman Ishant Sharma (18) and took care of Dravid. Hauritz also hung in after some punishment to finish off the innings with 2 for 116.Dravid seemed set for a big score until he pushed at one angling across him from Bollinger and was caught behind by Tim Paine. He had batted for almost half the day, nudging singles and punching boundaries in his watchful way, before the unexpected error ended his fourth-wicket stand of 79 with Tendulkar. The previous series against Sri Lanka was a poor one for Dravid – he got 95 runs in five matches – and this was his first Test half-century since January. However, he joined Virender Sehwag, Tendulkar and Raina in falling before reaching three figures, and keeping Australia in the game.

Win keeps Essex's hopes alive

ScorecardEssex beat Netherlands by eight wickets under the Duckworth/Lewis method having been set 74 from 16 overs to win the Clydesdale Bank 40 Group B match at Chelmsford. The victory keeps alive the county’s hopes of reaching the semi-final stages of the competition after Ravi Bopara hit an unbeaten 43 including 28 off one over from Mohammed Kashif as Essex reached 77 for 2 from eight overs to complete the win.Bopara and Mark Pettini had posted 47 for the first wicket before Brad Kruger struck twice in one over to gain some consolation for the Dutch side. Pettini was caught by Bas Zuiderent at midwicket for 31 and three balls later, Ryan ten Doeschate, playing against his international colleagues, was bowled for 2.However, Bopara decided to make his positive move and plundered the hapless Kashif for two sixes and four other boundaries to wrap up an effortless win for his side. Having chosen to bat first, the visitors had reached 29 for 3 from just over 13 overs after an hour’s play when rain swept across the County Ground in earnest and continued for 30 minutes before abating.Although the pitch was covered immediately, the intensity of the downpour soon left the surrounds and bowlers run-ups saturated with play ultimately delayed for three and a half hours. Umpires Jeremy Lloyds and Michael Gough made the first of four inspections at 4.00pm but were concerned that areas of the playing square were unsafe. Three further inspections in bright sunshine followed with the crowd growing increasingly restless. Finally the officials decided at 6.00pm conditions had improved sufficiently to allow Netherlands to continue their innings for a further 2.3 overs with the match reduced to 16 overs per side. Wilf Diepeveen and Zuiderent than added a further 22 runs from their remaining 15 deliveries with the CB40 debutant on 14 and Zuiderent 15 not out as the Netherlands innings closed on 51 for 3.

Manchester United: Fans react to Jesse Lingard update

Newcastle United have made a “generous and extremely tempting” offer for Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard.

That’s according to The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards, and a number of United fans have been giving their thoughts to the news on social media.

Lingard is out of contract at Old Trafford in the summer and has made just two starts all season. He’s recently been linked with Newcastle, Tottenham and West Ham, with the former of the three pushing to land the 29-year-old.

According to Edwards, Newcastle had a loan bid turned down earlier in the week but have now returned with a “generous and extremely tempting” offer.

Edwards adds that United could be able to make around £12m for Lingard, who Ole Gunnar Solskjaer labelled as ‘brilliant’, however, the England international isn’t considering a permanent move at this moment in time.

United fans react

@utdreport relayed Edwards’ claim regarding Lingard on Twitter. This is what these United supporters had to say in reply, with many keen for him to move on.

Newcastle eyeing deal for Stephy Mavididi

An update has emerged regarding Newcastle United’s pursuit of Montpellier forward Stephy Mavididi…

What’s the talk?

According to the Daily Mail, the Magpies are among the clubs interested in a deal to sign the former Arsenal attacker this month.

The report claims that Brighton and Crystal Palace are also monitoring his progress, with a fee in the region of £15m being touted.

Imagine him & Wood

Imagine a strike force of Wood and Mavididi lining up for Newcastle in the Premier League in the coming weeks with Callum Wilson out injured!

If Howe can secure a deal for the 23-year-old, he could be an ideal player to slot in alongside the New Zealand marksman due to his style of play and physique. The 5 foot 9 forward is in a similar mould to Wilson in the sense that he is more likely to cause problems with his pace and footwork than physically or in the air, which could complement Wood brilliantly.

Former Charlton boss Lee Bowyer once compared Mavididi to a greyhound because of his electric pace, saying: “There was one time we broke and we had Stephy and Sullay (Kaikai) breaking and it was like two greyhounds in a race – look at how quick they are.

“We’re very fortunate, we’ve got these types of players at the club., if we can get them right and get them all fit for the remaining eight games, it’s going to be exciting times.”

This suggests that the 23-year-old could be the perfect partner for Wood if Howe wants to play a 4-4-2 system, as he could be the one to make runs in behind and play off of the former Burnley man. The 6 foot 2 New Zealand international has won 5.5 aerial battles per game in the Premier League this season, which suggests that Mavididi could have numerous chances per match to run in behind and create chances from Wood’s flick-ons.

Karl Robinson, a former manager of his during a loan spell at Charlton, previously claimed that the young striker has a “bright future” , and this mooted transfer could be an investment for the future as well as one to make an immediate difference. At the age of 23, Mavididi has plenty of scope for development left in him, and he could be a player with whom Howe works over time to improve his game.

He is capable of playing through the middle or out wide and has been in fine form this season, with six goals and three assists in Ligue 1, after scoring nine goals last term, suggesting that he could have the end product to make the most of his prospective partnership with Wood.

That tantalising propsect means that Newcastle must do everything in their power to try and lure Mavididi back to England.

Leeds: Bielsa must axe Robin Koch v Burnley

After going four matches without a victory in the Premier League, Leeds United will be desperate to get back to winning ways when they take on Burnley at Elland Road on Sunday afternoon.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side were beaten 4-1 by Arsenal in their last top-flight outing, with the Whites missing a number of players due to injury or illness. However, one man who did make his long-awaited return was Robin Koch, but it’s safe to say that the German did not really hit the ground running.

As per Sofascore, his 5.9 match rating was the worst by far of any Leeds player on the pitch, losing possession 11 times, winning just three of his seven duels and committing two fouls as well.

Writing in his post-match player ratings for Leeds Live, Beren Cross gave him a measly five, saying: “Could tell the Germany international had been rushed back to combat the injury crisis ripping through Thorp Arch. Looked edgy and rusty. Bulldozed by Alexandre Lacazette and turned easily by neat passing triangles throughout the game.”

Koch was a liability against Arsenal, and whether it was through rust or lack of match fitness, he just didn’t seem to be at the races.

The German had a injury-hit debut campaign at Elland Road last season, playing just 17 times in the Premier League and missing a number of games with a knee problem between December and March.

It was quite telling that, in April, reports emerged that Bielsa thought the 25-year-old was too soft to be an elite Premier League player and felt that the likes of Llorente, Cooper and Pascal Struijk had all overtaken him in the pecking order.

With Burnley likely to bring a physical approach to their play when they take on Leeds, it might make more sense for Bielsa to axe Koch from his starting line-up and instead bring back in Diego Llorente, who has been passed fit.

The £8.5m-rated centre-back needs to be taken out of the firing line.

Meanwhile, this Championship ace “would jump” at the chance to join Leeds…

West Ham linked with Adama Traore move

West Ham have joined Tottenham in the race to sign Adama Traore in the January transfer window, according to reliable journalist John Percy.

The Lowdown: Traore on the fringes

The 25-year-old has found himself in and out of Wolves’ team this season, starting 10 Premier League matches overall but only completing a full 90 minutes on five occasions.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-updates/” title=”West Ham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Traore has been linked with a move away from Molineux this month, with Liverpool one of the clubs thought to be keeping an eye on the situation.

The speedy winger’s current Wolves deal expires in the summer of 2023 and he doesn’t appear to be close to extending his stay at the club.

The Latest: West Ham linked with move

According to The Telegraph’s Percy, West Ham have now entered the race to sign Traore, who could be available for £20m in January.

Spurs are also mentioned as potential suitors for the Spain international, as the two clubs look to strengthen their squads in the race for Champions League football.

The Verdict: Potential big-money risk?

Traore is a hugely entertaining player to watch – Jurgen Klopp has described him as ‘unplayable’ – with his pace arguably unrivalled and his dribbling ability often a nightmare for defenders to handle – his match average of 4.7 in that respect is the best of any player in the Premier League.

That being said, a lack of end product has long been his downfall, and he is yet to register a single goal or assist in 17 league appearances this season prior to his team’s clash against Manchester United this evening. Ten goals and 18 assists in 150 Wolves appearances overall is also a disappointing return.

David Moyes may believe he can turn Traore into the all-round package, but given the transfer fee being mooted, there would be a clear element of risk behind the prospective signing.

Van Bronckhorst must axe Defoe in January

Glasgow Rangers centre-forward Jermain Defoe could be on his way out of Ibrox.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by Frank McAvennie, who suggested in a recent interview with Football Insider that, following his removal from Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s coaching staff at Rangers, the 39-year-old’s time at the Premiership side could be coming to an end.

Speaking about the former England international’s future, McAvennie said: “The manager doesn’t know Defoe, so he can’t have any complaints. He’s bringing in his own team and he needs people he can trust. Defoe will know that as well so I can’t imagine he’s too annoyed. I think his time is up at Rangers now.

“He’s got a few months left on his deal so I can see him hanging around Ibrox until the end of the season. He’s always there as an option and what an option to have, he’s still so clinical. We know he’s a popular boy as well, the players all like him by the sounds of it and he’s a fan favourite. Short-term, he can help, but I don’t see a long-term future there.”

Defoe must go

While it is indeed true that Defoe is something of a fan favourite at Ibrox, considering the fact that the veteran striker is currently taking home a whopping £15k-per-week in wages, it would seem a very wise move for Van Bronckhorst to move the 39-year-old onto pastures new in January.

With Defoe now back to being contracted solely as part of the playing staff at Ibrox, his worth to the club is ultimately reflected by his returns on the pitch – something that does not make pretty reading so far this season.

Indeed, the former Tottenham Hotspur centre-forward has played a grand total of nine minutes for Gers in the current campaign, being left out of every single matchday squad, be that in the league, domestic cups or in Europe, apart from the two fixtures in which he has made an appearance.

As such, it simply cannot be argued that Defoe is worth the extremely hefty weekly wage the Light Blues are currently paying him, particularly with it being reported that Rangers’ finances are far from healthy at present.

So, while it may be sad to see him go, the sensible move for Van Bronckhorst would certainly be to thank the 39-year-old for all he has done for the club before allowing him to find a new side in the January transfer window.
