Solid South Australia declare in deficit

A sporting declaration by South Australia’s captain Johan Botha against Queensland has opened up the possibility of an outright result on the final day of the Sheffield Shield match at Adelaide Oval. The Redbacks were cruising at 4 for 368 when Botha called in Callum Ferguson on an even 100, leaving the Bulls with time to set a fourth-innings chase for their hosts.Ferguson enjoyed fruitful stands with Tom Cooper and Travis Head before reaching three figures, while the off spinner Jason Floros was Queensland’s only wicket-taker.First innings hat-trick taker Chadd Sayers grabbed another two early wickets when the Bulls batted again, but Joe Burns and Peter Forrest settled the innings down and will be chasing quick runs when play resumes on day four.

England seek limited-overs reboot

England’s composition has been under fire in ODIs but they have an opportunity to address against India, who have rarely been in advantageous positions in away series in the recent past

The Preview by Alagappan Muthu29-Aug-2014Match factsSaturday, August 30, 2014
Start time 10.30am local (0930 GMT)Big PictureThere was a century from an Indian middle-order batsman to resuscitate an innings going astray. In reply, England’s batting faltered. That only increased questions over Alastair Cook’s captaincy. India went 1-0 up. England in disarray. We’ve been here before. The rigours of limited-overs cricket might pale to Tests, as MS Dhoni has often pointed out on this tour, but in a four-match series success hinges on the ability to harness advantages. England will know India haven’t been outstanding in that department. And India will know England are still discovering their identity as an ODI side. They are testing a new opening partnership, which in the last two years has produced only one century stand. Cook was part of that and has politely brushed aside the punches aimed at himself and his team through the summer. Occasionally he has thrown them back. But his words will ring hollow unless accompanied with examples on the field. Lately though, the ammunition is in the hands of their critics: West Indies had them 89 for 6 chasing 160 in March, Sri Lanka routed them for 99 in May, India had given them a shock at the Champions Trophy final and did it again in Cardiff. The visitors have England down, but how long can they maintain that?India were authoritative at Cardiff, but can they keep up the intensity?•Getty ImagesRohit Sharma, one of the more important variables in India’s one-day formula, is out injured. The top three haven’t managed the kind of foundations Dhoni prefers. The India captain likes his cogs in place. He likes a strong score on the board. He likes to come in late and hike the total further. He likes a couple of early wickets so his spinners can prey on uncertain batsmen. He knows how to work his individual resources to harmonise with each other, like an orchestra conductor. However, in the past five years, India have lost four series on the road and one of their two successes have been against Zimbabwe. Dhoni and his team would want to prove they have the requisite ruthlessness that comes with being world champions.Form guide (last five completed matches, most recent first)England LLLWL

Players to watchIndia’s top order has often been stuck in the dressing room, watching their team-mates or their opponents cash in when the pitch eases out. None would know that rankle as much as Shikhar Dhawan. He sees the region outside his off stump as if it is poison. His feet are often splayed on leg stump with his hands leading away from him. When in form, he can be fluent through that very region but he needs to last beyond the early overs to rediscover that.England might be reeling under the impression of being stolid, but in Eoin Morgan they have a batsman that can upset most bowling attacks. His range of strokes often goes beyond the textbook, unlike the top order’s which has helped him average 55.50 in the Royal London One-Day Cup. He has Middlesex’s lone century so far in the tournament so far and England will hope the seeds he sowed in the domestic circuit bear fruit for them too.Team newsEngland’s batting, if they can live up to potential, can offer challenge. But the composition of their bowling might be of greater concern. A chance to redress that comes with the added bonus that rain would be expected to play, at worst, a minimal part. O'Brien signing reflects Surrey strength

Surrey 132 and 47 for 0 (Smith 39*) need another 220 runs to beat Gloucestershire 168 and 230
ScorecardKevin O’Brien will be returning to play in Surrey’s colours for the NatWest T20 Blast•Getty Images

Squad rotation is a reality that modern football has become well acquainted with. To most counties, their meagre playing resources make that notion an unimaginable luxury.Surrey are different. On a day limited to 17 deliveries – Surrey’s quest for a second Championship win since September 2012 will resume on Wednesday – they provided another reminder of their financial strength by signing Ireland’s Kevin O’Brien. It adds lustre to their Twenty20 batting line-up ahead of their tournament opener at Hove on Friday night. But it is in pace bowling that Surrey’s resources are most plentiful and where resting players is a luxury they can afford. While Tom Curran, Matt Dunn, Tim Linley and Chris Tremlett illustrated their contrasting qualities to take 20 Gloucestershire wickets for only 398 in this game, Jade Dernbach and Stuart Meaker were rested with the NatWest Blast in mind. Add in George Edwards and Surrey, for all their plight near the foot of Division Two in the Championship, have seven pace bowlers with strong claims. The club’s approach to managing these talents evokes Claudio “The Tinkerman” Ranieri’s selection policy at Chelsea a decade ago. “You generally try and get your quick bowlers to play between ten and twelve games each, so that when they play they’re fresh and when they’re just lagging a bit you can leave them out and someone else can come in fresh,” Surrey’s director of cricket – and Chelsea fan – Alec Stewart explained after the first day. “That’s how we try and do it with the bowling resources.”Tremlett is among those who should benefit. “That’s the joy of having a big squad,” he said. “I don’t want to put my body under too much stress.”In other positions, the need for rotation is less pressing. Behind the stumps, Gary Wilson, who has deposed Niall O’Brien as Ireland wicketkeeper, will be in no mood to relinquish the responsibilities that he has gained while Steven Davies works on his batting.Stewart warned Davies that, “No one has a divine right to say ‘I’m a keeper therefore I keep’. It’s how the selectors feel.” Wilson strengthened his case with impressive keeping in both innings against Gloucestershire, which was not reflected in a match total of 25 byes. With rain dominating the day, Wilson had the chance to welcome his compatriot Kevin O’Brien. In the spirit of the age, he tweeted a selfie, though one imagines that it resonated rather less far than David Cameron’s attempt at Nelson Mandela’s funeral last year. O’Brien is expected to be available for nine games before he heads to the Caribbean: such is the life of the nomadic cricketer. The lack of regular team-mates is “probably one of the hardest things to get used to” but O’Brien said that it was “easier when you come back and you know the guys in the changing room”. He made a big impression in very little time last season, relishing the short boundaries to the Mound and Tavern stands in scything a 24-ball 54 at Lord’s.That innings was from No. 4, though it is opening – as when smiting a century for Gloucestershire in 2011 – that O’Brien prefers. “It’s the best time to bat in Twenty20,” he said. “You’ve got an opportunity to face the most balls.” It is expected that O’Brien will be used in the middle order, with Graeme Smith, Jason Roy, Steven Davies and – once his IPL commitments are done – Kevin Pietersen at the top.It all promises no shortage of razzmatazz. Surrey’s challenge to win this game is more mundane but, against a Gloucestershire attack who bowled them out for 132 in their first innings, no less challenging for that.

Yuvraj 96* helps Punjab cruise past Delhi

North Zone

An unbeaten century stand between Yuvraj Singh and Gurkeerat Singh helped Punjab to a six-wicket victory against Delhi. Punjab, chasing 229, were on shaky ground, slipping to 89 for 4 at the halfway stage. From there on, Yuvraj – who missed Punjab’s first match of the tournament to attend his brother’s wedding – and Gurkeerat took charge, adding 143 at over a run a ball. The match ended with Gurkeerat just past a half-century and Yuvraj four short of a hundred – his 96 came off 95 balls and included 10 fours and two sixes. Earlier, seam bowler Siddarth Kaul had played a big role in restricting Delhi to 228, accounting for the top order – he even effected a run-out. Mithun Manhas held the Delhi innings together in a knock of 98.Services edged home by two runs in a shortened match against Jammu & Kashmir, to make it two wins in two in the tournament. The match was reduced to 32-overs-a-side and Services got to 171 for 8. The innings was built around a knock of 54 from Rajat Paliwal. In reply, J&K were in big trouble early on, slipping to 29 for 4. It took a 77-run stand between Hardeep Singh and Bandeep Singh to get the chase back on track, but following Hardeep’s dismissal – to left-arm spinner Avishek Sinha, the leading wicket-taker for Services with 4 for 26 – Bandeep failed to get the support required to get the team home. He finished unbeaten on 55 as Sinha ran through the tail to ensure his team sneaked home. The match between Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, in Delhi, was abandoned without a toss.

East Zone

Assam and Odisha shared points in Ranchi, after only 17 overs were possible due to the weather. Assam’s innings had already been reduced to 20 overs, and they struggled in the conditions, getting to 128 for 6 before play was called off. Parvez Aziz made the only contribution of note for them, hitting 61 off 42.The match between Jharkhand and Tripura, in Ranchi, was abandoned without a toss.

Junaid, Bhatti make it Pakistan's day

The Pakistan seamers shredded the Sri Lanka batting in unthreatening conditions to wrest control after a manic second session in Abu Dhabi

The Report by Devashish Fuloria31-Dec-2013
Live scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsBilawal Bhatti triggered Sri Lanka’s collapse with a wicket immediately after lunch•AFPThe Pakistan seamers shredded Sri Lanka’s batting in unthreatening conditions to wrest control after a manic second session in Abu Dhabi. Junaid Khan maintained his stranglehold over the Sri Lanka batsmen, picking up his fourth five-wicket haul against them, but central to the collapse was debutant Bilawal Bhatti’s post-lunch spell during which he picked up three wickets – two of them in one over. The twitter feed was abound with the question: “What did they eat for lunch?”The pitch in its green guise didn’t offer much to the bowlers, but it was a mix of tight bowling and loose batting from Sri Lanka that resulted in their innings slipping off the precipice. From a comfortable 66 for 1 at lunch, Sri Lanka lost seven wickets for 58 runs and only a rearguard action from their captain, Angelo Mathews, who scored a counterattacking 91, prevented a complete capitulation.Sri Lanka were eventually bowled out for 204 and Pakistan had a comfortable start to their innings till a run-out off the last ball took some sheen away. Khurram Manzoor was left stranded mid-pitch after dabbing a ball to cover, and Pakistan ended the day on 46 for 1.It all started in the first over of the second session when Kaushal Silva – who had been patient, but circumspect, all morning – played inside the line of a short-of-a-length delivery from Bhatti only to edge it to the keeper. Sixty-six for 1 became 67 for 2, but Sri Lanka wouldn’t have worried too much about it as they had the experienced pair of Mahela Jayawardene, who was playing his first Test in almost a year, and Kumar Sangakkara in the middle. That safety cushion was soon pulled away by Bhatti in his next over. He got his second delivery – probably the best of the day – to rear awkwardly on Jayawardene and the batsman edged it to the keeper. However, the TV umpire came to Jayawardene’s rescue as the replays showed the bowler had overstepped. The very next ball though – a yorker, Jayawardene edged it to Adnan Akmal again. Seventy-six for 2 became 76 for 3.Two balls later, Chandimal played a poor shot, chasing a wide delivery, and paid the price as the edge flew straight to Misbah-ul-Haq at first slip. Seventy-six for 4.At the other end, Sangakkara was watching the drama unfold but was unfazed and was defending solidly. However, three overs after Bhatti’s double-strike, his eyes lit up seeing Junaid bowl a wide, length ball. Nine out of 10 times, Sangakkara would have crashed it through covers, but today he slashed it straight to the cover-point fielder. Pakistan were ecstatic to see the back of their tormentor. Eighty-two for 5 now.Junaid then added three more wickets – Prasanna Jayawardene edged to Akmal, before Sachithra Senanayake and Rangana Herath were removed off successive deliveries – to complete his five-for in an eight-over spell. Hundred-and-twenty-four for 8.Running out of partners, Mathews tried to score whenever possible – he hit three boundaries in a Bhatti over immediately after Sangakkara’s departure – and brought up his half-century in 49 balls. He added a crucial 61 with Shaminda Eranga, who scored 14, for the ninth wicket and 19 for the tenth wicket during a period of play where Pakistan allowed him to farm the strike. He was finally stumped off a Saeed Ajmal doosra early in the third session, falling in the ninties for the third time in his career. The dramatic second session was in complete contrast with the first, during which Sri Lanka, despite the loss of Dimuth Karunaratne, had looked comfortable after being put in to bat. The two openers added 50 in the first hour of the day as Pakistan didn’t make the impact they would have hoped for. However, the winds started changing direction in the second hour as the bowlers adjusted their lines and length to stem the flow of runs.In the second over after the first drinks break, Junaid had a strong appeal for caught behind against Silva turned down by the umpire. Pakistan immediately called for a review – they had reasons to be confident as the ball made a sound as it passed the bat – but with no Hot Spot available for this series, the decision went in the favour of the batsman, extending Pakistan’s poor run with the DRS (Pakistan wasted another review in the 55th over).Four overs later, Junaid had Karunaratne pushing away from the body and Asad Shafiq took a smart reflex catch at gully to end the 57-run opening-wicket stand. The wicket slowed Sri Lanka’s pace down – 16 runs came in the 12 overs after the drinks break. The runs dried up, and Pakistan had a feast after lunch.

White takes Northants to quarter-finals

ScorecardCameron White’s experience ensured the run chase was calm•Getty Images

Northamptonshire booked their place in the Friends Life T20 quarter-finals with a comfortable win over Glamorgan in Cardiff.Fine displays from Cameron White and Azharullah enabled Northamptonshire to win this top of the table clash in the Midlands, Wales and West Group by six wickets, with nine balls to spare. Glamorgan, unbeaten at home until tonight, will have to beat Gloucestershire at Cardiff on Tuesday to have any chance of reaching the last eight.White scored 71 from 48 balls while Azharullah recorded figures of 4 for 16 runs from his four overs as Glamorgan were restricted to 125 for 9. Azharullah produced a fine spell, with his first three overs only producing six runs.Only Chris Cooke, with 50 from 38 balls, took the attack to the Northamptonshire bowlers with only two other batsmen – Mark Wallace (22) and Nathan McCullum (20) – getting into double figures. After the early loss of in-form Jim Allenby, Azharullah’s first victim, in the third over, Cooke and Wallace got Glamorgan into a useful position at 71 for 1 in the 10th over. But after Wallace holed out to Azharullah to long-on Glamorgan’s runs dried up with no boundaries coming between the ninth and 14th overs. And from 90 for 2 Glamorgan lost seven wickets for the addition of only 35 runs. Captain Marcus North looked out of form as he was caught off Steven Crook before Cooke was dismissed in the next over the ball after reaching his 50. McCullum struck three fours but Glamorgan’s total looked nothing more than competitive.Northamptonshire had looked comfortable in the opening three overs as they reached 21 without loss but Glamorgan struck when the dangerous Richard Levi was run out at the non-striker’s end off the bowler’s hand.Kyle Coetzer looked in good form but was caught at midwicket by Ben Wright off Michael Hogan. White hit McCullum for a straight six as the Australian took the pressure of his side’s chase. After nine overs the visitors had reached 50 for 2.But they suffered a setback when captain Alex Wakely holed out off Dean Cosker to make it 62 for 3 in the 12th over. Crook took the pressure off with two consecutive fours as 15 came off an over from Jim Allenby as 36 were required from the final 30 balls.White reached his 50 from 42 balls with four fours and a six as the visitors needed only 18 runs from 18 balls. White hit two sixes off the 17th over from McCullum as Northamptonshire eased to victory.

'Buzzin' Borthwick sets up Durham win

ScorecardScott Borthwick took 8 for 92 in the match•Getty Images

“Buzzin” was Scott Borthwick’s stock description of how he felt at the end of four days of astute cricket from Durham that saw him take a career-best 6 for 70 as Durham recorded their first ever win at The Oval. You would be hard-pressed to find anything in colloquial speech that could better describe him; a grin from ear to ear, head bobbing from side to front to side as he completed his post-match interviews in such a happy-go-lucky manner that made you appreciate how nice it is to see a talented young cricketer in the process of turning potential into quality – and a legspinner, no less. Enough to make you “buzz”.”It’s nice to bowl the overs and see the ball spin past the bat,” Borthwick remarked on day three here. It is a simple statement but one that must buoy any young English spinner trying to forge a first-class career. Here were two of them – Borthwick in the second innings and Ryan Buckley with his five wickets in the first – out-bowling two stalwarts with more than 400 first class games between them in Gareth Batty and Gary Keedy.Paul Collingwood admitted that he feared the worst when he lost the toss, not least because he was not truly aware of young Buckley’s strengths, having only faced him a handful of times in the nets. But he had full faith in his team’s dexterity and that, in essence, is what won them the game.”We’ve got a very versatile team” Collingwood said. “It was a big loss losing Stokes as a bowler so you’ve got to change the dynamics of the team around and bring in an extra seamer. It’s great when you’ve got someone like Scotty – he’s a genuine allrounder. He can bat at three, so you can be very versatile as a team depending on what the conditions are.”Batty was measured in defeat but unhappy at what he deemed were moments where his batsmen “self-destructed”.”A young fella did really well,” Batty said. “Ultimately did we get ragged out? I’m not entirely sure we did and I think we have to take that on the chin and say we’ve let ourselves down on a few occasions which allowed Durham to come back in. They’re a very good team and they punished us for that.”Gary Wilson and Batty did absolutely the right thing this morning, aiming to get value from every shot, either through good placement or hard running. Dawdling would only lead to panic. But having just taken Surrey past 200, they both fell in the space of three balls – Batty lbw to Buckley and Wilson caught by Collingwood at slip off the bowling of Borthwick – leaving Stuart Meaker and Tim Linley to take Surrey’s lead to 180. The innings came to a close when both presented Borthwick with two return catches, meaning 19 of the 30 wickets to go had fallen to spin.As such, Batty shared the new ball with Linley, as Durham were given a target of 181 for victory in just over two sessions. Linley redressed the balance of match wickets when he found some movement away from the right handed Will Smith to take the edge through to Steven Davies with the last ball of the first over. But that was the only casualty before lunch, as Stoneman and Borthwick looked comfortable going into the break on 39 for 1.The afternoon session started at a canter for Durham, as the pair continued – Borthwick this time playing the lead as he caught up with Stoneman by punishing anything short from Keedy. He put Linley over the rope for six and then took four from Batty to bring up his second half-century of the match. But Borthwick couldn’t follow – trapped in front by Batty, who nearly nabbed Stoneman when he drove wildly outside off that scorched the fingers of Jason Roy at slip. The introduction of Meaker livened things up as he caught Stoneman on the shoulder with a bouncer and then made a complete mess of his stumps with a searing yorker, and when Benkenstein was early into a shot off Linley – spooning it up to Batty at mid-off – Surrey sensed they were onto something. But only one further wicket fell – Collingwood bowled – providing Keedy with a wicket to give him match figures of 1 for 125 – before Ben Stokes finished things off with a brace of stylish fours. It’s now three wins in five for Durham this season and eight in the last 11 with Collingwood at the helm. Tipped by many for nothing more than a relegation scrap, they are now top of the table and playing some very smart cricket.
