Eventual Tomkins replacement? Sam Woods opens up on Palace chances

[ad_pod ]

Crystal Palace youngster Sam Woods has been speaking about his first team chances – could the Eagles already have their James Tomkins replacement at the club?

Mamadou Sakho could miss the rest of the season through injury, and it may just offer the perfect chance for Woods to prove his worth.

Roy Hodgson of course has veteran Scott Dann to call on in Sakho’s absence, but Woods has been speaking about his hopes of a proper run in the first XI.

What has he said?

“That’s not my decision, so I can’t say If I can play or not,” Woods told Football.London.

“I’m just going to be trying my best everyday and see where that takes me.

“I think to try my best everyday in training, in games and just see what happens. If I can keep getting on the bench for the first-team that’s good and maybe come on.

“We just have to wait and see.

“It’s different (training with the first-team) it’s a lot more intense and demanding, but you have to learn quick.

“I feel like I’m adapting everyday and definitely becoming a better player training with them.”

Following Wan-Bissaka

Woods went on to explain the benefits of training with the first team and praised the likes of Dann and Tomkins for their guidance, so he clearly has his head screwed on straight.

And the youngster has actually already featured for the senior side, amassing 11 minutes in an EFL cup clash against Middlesbrough.

With Tomkins set to turn 30 on Friday, Woods’ presence in the first team could become more and more prevalent over the next 18 months or so.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka has already cleared the path for youngsters to grab their chances under Roy Hodgson, and Woods’ excellent attitude should ensure he is best-placed to follow in the right-back’s footsteps.

Players age at different rates of course, but if Tomkins’ form falls off at any point in the near future, could the 20 year-old be a long-term partner for Sakho? Palace fans, let us know your thoughts in the comments below…

Leeds would do very well to bring back Aaron Lennon this summer

Leeds cannot afford to get ahead of themselves even if they could go top of the Championship by winning their game in hand.

With 14 games still to play, Leeds have far from completed their mission of a top-flight return as their league standing is still very much in the balance.

A number of teams have the potential to get promoted – with Leeds being one of them – so they have to maintain their focus and continue to work hard. Even though it will be hard to balance, the Whites almost must be thinking of who they will sign to improve in the summer, of which Burnley’s Aaron Lennon will come straight to mind.

Lennon, (who is valued at £4.5 million on Transfermarkt) started his footballing career with Leeds and could now be set to return to Elland Road (touted with a move in the Sun some weeks ago now), where it all began.

Marcelo Bielsa is reportedly a fan of the 31-year-old and is ready to stage an emotional return to his boyhood club.

It’s no wonder he is a fan either, with plenty of top-flight experience and then attributes like electric pace, close control and an eye for his team-mates, he could settle in nicely to the current set-up at Elland Road.

The former England international is currently injured and that will be a big blow to him personally, seeing as he was very important to Burnley’s set-up this season.

With 22 appearances, one goal and one assist to his name, Lennon was once again a key player for a side, something he had previously struggled with during spells at Everton and Tottenham.

Leeds would certainly make room for the winger they once adored, seeing as he would definitely make improvements to their overall squad as well.

Between The Lines: Manuel Pellegrini surprised by how mature Declan Rice is

[ad_pod ]

West Ham United manager Manuel Pellegrini has been giving his verdict on midfielder Declan Rice, via whufc.com, and has suggested that he has been surprised about just how mature the 20-year-old is.

What’s the word, then?

Well, after a tough start to the season where he failed to make the squad against Bournemouth and was an unused substitute against Arsenal and Wolverhampton Wanderers in the opening four Premier League matches, the youngster has since played the full 90 minutes in 19 consecutive top flight fixtures prior to the visit of Fulham on Friday night.

The player who has now pledged his international allegiance to England has been one of the standout performers for the east London outfit this term, and he continues to go from strength to strength despite his tender years.

When asked if he was the best youngster Pellegrini has worked with, the Chilean told whufc.com: “I worked with so many young players, it is difficult to compare 20 years of management and different players, but he is a very good player.

“I started with Javier Mascherano when he was 17 years old and he was similar to Declan Rice in his mentality – the mentality that when they are 17 or 19 years old it seemed that they have the mentality of 35 years old.”

How should his comments be interpreted?

By comparing him to Mascherano it is clear that Pellegrini feels that he has a special player on his hands, and one that he has surprised him with the mentality that he has despite only recently coming out of his teenage years.

To say that the London-born midfielder has the maturity of a 35-year-old is certainly a big compliment, and the Irons boss will want him to carry on listening and improving so his performance levels don’t drop anytime soon.

Everton fans once again react negatively to club’s social media post

[ad_pod ]

The Everton fans are in no mood for a laugh and a joke at the moment.

Ahead of next week’s Premier League clash with Cardiff City, a tweet from Everton’s official account made a joke about Toffees goalkeeper Jordan Pickford recently becoming a father.

However, the Everton supporters were not having any of it.

The Merseyside outfit are on a rotten run of form at the moment, losing five of their last six matches in all competitions, including their last three in the league.

Many expected the team to make a challenge for the top-six this season, but they have not been victorious in the league since an unconvincing 1-0 success away to struggling Huddersfield Town at the end of next month.

As a result, there is simply no downplaying the importance of Tuesday’s trip to Cardiff, which will be Everton’s first match since they lost 1-0 at Watford on February 9.

Everton’s Twitter account are doing their best to raise the spirits at the moment, but the club’s supporters are just not interested. Earlier this week, fans trolled a Twitter post showing off Lucas Digne’s skills in training and once again, the club’s account has been targeted for abuse from unhappy supporters.

"Thank you to everyone who has supported me on this journey so far. It is an honor of a lifetime to represent England," he posted alongside the picture on Instagram.

Lewis certainly impressed his manager against North Macedonia. Southgate said after the 1-1 draw that he felt the Manchester City youngster was "excellent" and the decision to award a penalty against him was "very, very harsh." Lewis will be hoping he can now make a late push for England's Euro 2024 squad and his versatility will make him an attractive option. The youngster can play in both full-back positions as well as in midfield.

DID YOU KNOW?

Rico Lewis has become the second-youngest Manchester City player to feature for England (18 years, 364 days), behind only Micah Richards in 2006 (18 years, 144 days).

Man Utd player ratings vs Newcastle: Casemiro is a big-game baller! Brazil star leads Red Devils to Carabao Cup glory

The Red Devils ran out 2-0 winners at Wembley as Erik ten Hag secured his first silverware in English football with a victory over Eddie Howe's side

A Casemiro-inspired Manchester United ended their near six-year long wait for a trophy, beating Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday.

After an even, slightly untidy start where chances were at a premium, United blew the game wide open with two quickfire goals in just six first-half minutes.

The exceptional Casemiro grabbed the opener, nodding Luke Shaw's free kick past Loris Karius. And six minutes later, Marcus Rashford burst free of the Magpies' defence and fired on goal, with an unfortunate deflection off Sven Botman taking the ball into the net.

United didn't have it all their own way after the break as, buoyed by a rampant travelling support, Newcastle dialed up the pressure. In truth though, there was never much danger of them letting their lead slip as they clinched the first major silverware of the Erik ten Hag era.

GOAL rates Man Utd's players from Wembley…

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    David de Gea (7/10):

His strong hand denied Saint-Maximin in the first half. Seemed pretty confident collecting high balls and sweeping up behind his defence.

    Diogo Dalot (4/10):

Early, and largely unnecessary booking, had him walking a tightrope. Saint-Maximin regularly had the beating of Dalot in all honesty, and it was little surprise to see him hooked at half-time.

    Lisandro Martinez (7/10):

Made a huge block to deny Bruno Guimaraes when Newcastle were piling on the pressure in the second half. What a superb piece of business.

    Raphael Varane (7/10):

Passing wasn't perfect, but very little wrong with his defending.

    Luke Shaw (7/10):

Absolutely delicious ball led to the opener. He also chipped in with some vital interceptions, showcasing his astute reading of the game.

    Midfield

    Casemiro (8/10):

Guided his header into the corner superbly to open the scoring. Barely did anything wrong – worth every penny United spent on him.

    Fred (6/10):

A nice foil for his compatriot. Typically full of energy, but was overly enthusiastic in his tackles on occasion. Taken off while on a booking.

    Bruno Fernandes (5/10):

Worked really hard off the ball but wasn't particularly creative. Not much he tried came off and made a hash of two, potentially game-ending passes late on, before squandering a chance to make it three himself.

    Attack

    Antony (6/10):

Rarely gave the ball away in the final third. Nothing too magical, though he did wind up his opponents.

    Wout Weghorst (7/10):

Ran the channels like an animal all game. Denied by a wonderful Karius save just before the break and completed a nice lay-off just before the second goal.

    Marcus Rashford (7/10):

United were looking to release him at every opportunity and he eventually forced a goal when his shot deflected off Botman and over Karius. His astounding recent form continues.

    Subs & Manager

    Aaron Wan-Bissaka (7/10):

Solid after replacing Dalot. Will be interesting to see if he can become first choice after improving so drastically under Ten Hag.

    Marcel Sabitzer (6/10):

Kept the pressure on Newcastle as they searched for an equaliser.

    Scott McTominay (6/10):

His height was helpful in the penalty box.

    Jadon Sancho (N/A):

Not enough time to make an impact.

    Harry Maguire (N/A):

Nice of Ten Hag to give his captain a run out in the closing stages.

    Erik ten Hag (9/10):

Told his side to release Rashford early in the first half – to decent effect. Smartly removed any players on a booking from the fray. The first United manager to lift a trophy since Jose Mourinho.
