Despite going ahead courtesy of a Trezeguet strike, Aston Villa let another lead slip against a top-six side with Liverpool scoring two late goals to maintain their unbeaten start to 2019/20.

That being said there was one positive to be found, and that was in the rapturous atmosphere inside Villa Park. The vibes in the stadium has got these fans praising the club as they strive to have a rosier outlook on their prospects for the remainder of the campaign.

Strikes from Andy Robertson and Sadio Mane gave Jurgen Klopp’s side an important victory to retain their six-point lead at the summit of the league table, but the German coach also praised the atmosphere inside the stadium in his post-match comments, much to the delight of many Villa fans.

Defeat for Dean Smith’s side will have been naturally frustrating – especially given their ongoing inability to see out leads against superior opposition – but the reaction to the defeat hasn’t seen many put too many dampeners on proceedings. 

It should serve as a sign of encouragement going forward, especially as the Villans strive to make their home ground a fortress.

Dean Smith’s men went into the break with honours even, but within 20 seconds of the second half, Raheem Sterling handed the home side the lead before David Silva and Ilkay Gundogan rounded off a 3-0 victory.

Though, City did finish the match with ten men as Fernandinho received a second yellow card with less than three minutes remaining.

Villa slipped down to 15th, but do have a three-point cushion from the relegation zone – but their afternoon could have been much worse.

If anything, Pep Guardiola’s side deserved more from the game, considering they registered a total of 26 shots and 63% possession.

And if that doesn’t tell you the scoreline was in favour of Villa, then it could quite easily have been at least 5-0, had City’s attackers made the most of Bjorn Engels’ errors at the back.

Per SofaScore, the summer signing failed to register a single tackle, won just one of his aerial duels, and lost possession eight times. It was a rare bad day at the office for the Belgian – or was it?

Understat’s xG model suggests that Villa should be third-last for goals conceded if teams had converted more chances against them, and given that the 25-year-old has featured in every game, he’s been part of the problem.

Marco Silva has praised Theo Walcott for his contributions to the side in recent times, claiming that the Englishman is a “really important player” for Everton.

What did he say?

Walcott has been a shining light this past month in what has been a very dark time for the club. Players across the pitch have failed to pull their weight, and the club have been fighting around the relegation zone ever since.

Walcott once again played a hand in an Everton win, just as he did against West Ham United. His assist for Bernard’s goal against the Hammers and his assist for Holgate against Watford have shown he is a vital man for Silva right now.

The Blues boss said: “Theo had a big impact again, the change we made [Walcott for Kean] had a big impact on our second half,” added Silva.

“Theo was always a really important player for me, he knows that. He is in a good moment and will help us in the next games as well.

“The way we built our attacks [after half-time] was faster and the gaps were clearer. We found the spaces more easily.”

More important than ever

It is easy to justify Walcott’s importance lately, simply by the fact that he has assisted both opening goals in Everton’s last two wins. But now, because of the injury to Bernard, the former Arsenal man is going to be more important than ever for the club.

In the game against Watford on Tuesday, Kean was bringing very little to the side in an unfamiliar wide role. He completed just three passes and never successfully dribbled past a player or created an opportunity. In truth, it was another forgetful performance from the Italian.

However, when he was replaced by Walcott for the second half, the Englishman brought to the pitch speed and more creativity. His assist and two dribble attempts showed more than what Kean gave in the entire first half.

Right now, with the injury to Bernard and the 30-year-old’s creative nature, Walcott is proving to be one of Silva’s most valuable assets in one of the more surprising sub plots to emerge at Goodison Park this season.

West Ham United were clearly outplayed by Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday.

The Toffees won 2-0 and, although they only had 4% more possession than their opponents, they still managed 10 shots on target to their opponents’ four. It is now four matches without a victory for the Hammers after their 2-0 win against Manchester United at the London Stadium.

Manuel Pellegrini and co were without Lukasz Fabianski due to injury, with the Poland international normally being the first-choice goalkeeper when available. He was replaced once again in the starting XI by Roberto, who has played in each of the last three league matches. He was kept very busy by Marco Silva’s men.

Surrounded by disappointing performances, it seems the 33-year-old Spaniard was one of the few who came out of the match with any respect in the eyes of the London outfit’s supporters. You would expect that the pair patched things up before their next game against Arsenal, but the wider footballing world hasn’t forgotten the incident.

Mings was partially at fault for Arsenal’s equaliser on Sunday, and Matt Le Tissier wanted to see El Ghazi extract a little bit of revenge on his teammate after last week’s incident.

The Sky Sports pundit went on to say that he would have been tempted to cause some trouble it if he was in the same position as the Dutch winger.

Liverpool’s new 2019/20 season got off to almost a pitch-perfect start.

The first two games in the Premier League campaign have seen the Reds snatch all six points for their tally and they’ve also clinched the UEFA Super Cup in Istanbul, beating English top flight rivals Chelsea in the process.

The only thing Jurgen Klopp probably wishes had have gone better is the Community Shield clash with Manchester City just before the rollercoaster of the new season started. But that defeat probably doesn’t hurt as much, anyway.

Mohamed Salah also seems ready and motivated for the new season as the Egyptian has already got one goal and one assist under his belt in the two games he played in the Premier League.

As quoted by the club’s official website, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has hailed Phil Foden as the “most talented player” he has ever seen at his age.

What did he say?

Widely regarded as one of the brightest prospects in English football, Foden has enjoyed a meteoric rise with the Premier League champions since making his debut for the club in the 2017/2018 season.

The 19-year-old enjoyed somewhat of a breakthrough campaign last year, and scored his first Premier League goal when he netted the winner against Tottenham in April.

Now, speaking before the Citizens’ pre-season clash against Yokohama, Guardiola delivered glowing praise of the starlet.

He said: “I said many times in press conferences, but maybe not in front of him. He is the most talented player I have ever seen (for his age).

“His problem is sometimes his manager doesn’t put him in the starting XI. He deserves all the minutes but with his competitors it isn’t easy. He works incredibly. He knows I’m here to help him and I am pretty sure we will get it.”

Destined for the top

Now that’s what you call some high praise. To be getting first-team opportunities for a side containing the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva and Bernardo Silva, amongst others, is an achievement in itself.

The England U21 international has incredible poise and technique and as Guardiola himself suggested earlier this year, is an “exceptional player” already. Despite the Citizens contending for trophies on all fronts, Guardiola seemingly had enough trust in his abilities to hand him 26 appearances across all competitions.

As he continues to learn and progress under his Spanish manager’s tutelage, there can be no doubting that Foden will fancy his chances of eventually taking over from the likes of De Bruyne and Silva to become City’s attacking lynchpin.
