Weekes, who was the first international umpire from St. Kitts, stood in four Tests and three ODIs between 1983 and 1990.”He was one of the outstanding umpires in the Caribbean during the 1980s and early 1990s,” Julian Hunte, president of the WICB, said. “He did some tremendous work with the development of the game in St Kitts and also was one of the leading match officials in the Shell Shield and regional limited-overs tournaments.”He loved the game and he also dedicated a lot of time and energy to educating the people of his country. Excellence was his hallmark. For four decades he one of the leading educators on the island of St Kitts and helped to with the development of thousands of young lives. He was a true pioneer, ambassador and shining example for others to emulate.”

وأكمل: “في برشلونة الأمور مختلفة، في باريس سيجد راحة البال وكذلك الراحة الجسدية والعقلية، ويمكنه أن يصل إلى كأس العالم 2026 وهو في حالة جيد بدنيًا، خاصة وأنه يتقدم في العمر”.

وعن الصافرات التي تهاجمه بها جماهير باريس سان جيرمان، قال كيمبيس: “ما يحدث هو أن ليو يلعب في فرنسا، الدولة التي خسرت كأس العالم من الأرجنتين بفضل ليو، ما يحدث هو أنهم يشعرون بالألم كلما شاهدوا أفضل لاعب في العالم مع فريقهم، وأنه لا يؤدي كما كان يفعل في قطر مع الأرجنتين.

وأوضحت أنه في الوقت الذي سافر فيه ستيفان بايتيتش مع ليفربول إلى إسبانيا، رغم معاناته من إصابة مؤخرًا، إلا أنه تم استبعاد هندرسون تمامًا.

وتابع: “ربما تصعد من دور المجموعات ولديك 4 نقاط، هذا هو أقل عدد من النقاط يمكنك التأهل من خلاله عبر تاريخ تلك البطولة، لكننا نريد الحصول على 10 نقاط حتى نكون في وضع أفضل في الأدوار الإقصائية، لذلك فوزنا على الهلال السوداني كان مهمًا مع نظافة شباكنا”.

وأضاف: “كانت من الممكن أن تكون النتيجة أكثر من ذلك، أعتقد أننا سجلنا هدفًا ثانيًا ولكن تم إلغائه بسبب التسلل، ظهرنا بشكل جيد للغاية في المباراة”.

They had slid to 119 for 7 before Coetsee and Charl Pietersen attempted to resurrect their challenge, but it was too little too late. Smut had Pietersen caught for 41 and though Coetsee remained unbeaten on 66, Knights were always behind the asking rate and could only manage 234 for 9. Smuts finished with figures of 3 for 48 to and was named Player of the Match.The game between Dolphins and Cape Cobras was called off due to rain after just 10 overs were bowled.

Australia’s cricketers have become free agents in Twenty20 and can begin signing up with the new Big Bash League franchises. Cricket Australia and the Australian Cricketers’ Association (ACA) have signed off on a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), despite shelving negotiations over the distribution of private investment money that could come in for the newly-formed city-based Twenty20 sides.The one-year extension to the existing MOU means that the players and administrators have a little extra time to come to an agreement over private investment, if and when backers begin to jump on board with the Melbourne and Sydney sides. The ACA chief executive Paul Marsh said that if private money came in before this summer’s inaugural Big Bash League, the players could still win a piece of the pie.”We have no idea what value if anything is going to come from the private investment money that may come in to these franchises,” Marsh said. “Until we get some certainty around that I don’t think it would have been a smart decision for us to lock in for more than one year. Next year, if we can get some certainty around that we may lock in for a longer term.”One thing we’ve negotiated into this deal is a clause that if and when that does happen, then we’ll sit down with CA and seek to negotiate an outcome. It would be fair to say we’re a fair way apart on that particular issue, so there’ll be some pretty robust discussions on that if and when that time comes.”James Sutherland, the CA chief executive, said the decision to side-step private investment had been necessary to keep the Australian game from grinding to an industrial halt.”Both parties have agreed it’s not an issue today,” he said. “It may be an issue in the future and if it is an issue in the future then we will in good faith sit down with each other and talk that through. In some ways perhaps ideally it would be great to be sitting here today and say we’ve locked that down and got some agreement on that.”But it’s a common sense, pragmatic approach to the situation, we want the show to keep moving on and we want to be absolutely focused in giving players the security around their future as much as possible.”The ACA has already had one major victory in the Big Bash League, with Cricket Australia agreeing to free agency as the method of recruitment. With eight teams in the new competition, which begins in December, existing state contracts will bear no relevance to who plays where, so a die-hard Victorian like Brad Hodge could end up playing for Hobart, or Adelaide, or Brisbane.Cricket Australia’s original preference had been for all players to enter a draft, which could have meant a widespread scattering of cricketers to unfamiliar parts of the country. But under the free-agency model, every player will be able to negotiate his own deal with a team of his choice, which Marsh said was a significant win for the players.”One of the great outcomes for us around the Big Bash is we fought very hard to get a player allocation model of free agency,” he said. “That means players can negotiate with the teams of their choice and agree to terms, the value of their choice. We fought hard for that and we’ve got to a point now where we have an unrestricted free-agency model, which is pretty rare in world sport.”It’s a big change from what we’ve traditionally had. We’ve come to some very good solutions here. It’s going to be a change and the players are going to have to get used to having two different contracts, two different employers. It is more complex. But in time we’ll get used to it and it will become the norm.”The ACA and Cricket Australia had struggled to reach common ground on the MOU for several months, with the private investment issue and a distribution of funds from a proposed redevelopment of the WACA the two key sticking points. In the end, those two issues were put aside so planning for the Big Bash League could stay on track, and the players will retain their share of 26% of Australian cricket revenue.”Australian cricket has one of its biggest summers ever coming up in terms of both fan appeal but also in terms of revenue coming into the game,” Cricket Australia’s chief executive James Sutherland said. “The launch of the Big Bash League is important to us and to the ACA because of its long-term value in helping cricket recruit young people to become cricket fans; and the international programme we hope to announce later this week will offer current and new fans a big year of international cricket.”Recognising this, CA and the ACA have agreed to defer a number of outstanding issues until next year to ensure we can all get on with planning a big summer that will be important to fans and to players alike.”One thing they did agree on was a reduction in the number of state contracts, with each side having 14 to 18 spots available, down from the existing range of 16 to 20. Base contract levels will also dip slightly, but players shouldn’t be short-changed thanks to the promise of extra money from their new Twenty20 deals.The Big Bash League sides will have to work under a salary cap, but there will be no maximum contract figure for an individual player. Sides will be able to sign up to two overseas players in a squad of 18.

The only result of the weekend came from the contest involving the fifth and last places teams in the SuperSport Series, with the other two fixtures ending in draws. The bottom of the table clash between the Knights and the Warriors finished in three days in Kimberley. The Warriors earned their first win of the competition, but they remain rooted to the bottom of the table.It was uncharacteristically low-scoring match on the usually flat De Beers Diamond Oval. The Knights put up a respectable 301 in their first innings. Rilee Rossouw and Dean Elgar were the rocks on which that total was built. Rossouw scored 122 and Elgar an unbeaten 70, the pair sharing a second-wicket partnership of 157. The rest of the scorecard was the property of Andrew Birch and South Africa seamer Rusty Theron. They took 4 for 68 and 4 for 55 respectively.The Warriors, who have looked inept with the bat all season, continued in that fashion, and were bowled out for 210. Johan van der Wath sliced his way through them with 6 for 66, claiming wickets all through the order. Bevan Bennett was the only batsman to show any fight, top scoring with 41.Birch and Theron were not finished and shared eight wickets between them again in the Knights second innings. Birch claiming a five-for and Theron three for 42 as the Knights were bundle out for 120, setting the Warriors a target of 212 to win. It was an exciting chase, which started with van der Wath capturing Michael Price’s wicket with the score on 11. Jon-Jon Smuts 86 held the innings together, while van der Wath’s 3 for 42 and Victor Mpitsang’s 3 for 38 almost gave the Knights victory. Birch was there at the end with Basheer Walters and the Warriors won by two wickets.Rain had a major say in the Titans clash with the Dolphins in Benoni. The Dolphins opted to bat first in bowler friendly conditions and found themselves in big trouble at 95 for six. Albie Morkel, who ended with five for 73, did the bulk of the early damage. Jon Kent’s 66 and Kyle Abbott’s 80 put them back on the right path. Glen Addicott’s unbeaten 43, batting at No.9 was vital and the Dolphins were bowled out for 301.They were expected to struggle in the field without their ace Imran Tahir, who is on national duty, but bowled the Titans out for 193. Abbott ended with a five-for as none of the Titans batsmen made it over the half-century mark. The Dolphins second innings only just managed to get underway, they had scored one run, a no-ball from Ethy Mbhalati when rain stopped play on day three. There was no play on day four and the spoils were shared. The Titans stay top of the table after the result.The Lions have moved into second place after a high scoring draw against the Cobras in Paarl. The Cobras opted to field first and spent a difficult day chasing the ball. After the Lions were under some pressure at 97 for 3, Neil McKenzie and Zander de Bruyn demoralised the Cobras bowlers with a century apiece. Their fourth wicket partnership of 258 is a new first-class record for that wicket. Claude Henderson’s five for 90 went almost unnoticed as the Lions were bowled out for 458.It was then the Cobras turn to inflict suffering on the Lions bowlers. Owais Shah played his most notable innings since becoming the Cobras overseas professional with 151 and Ryan Canning chipped in with 121. The two innings were almost identical as the Lions spinner, Dale Deeb, took five for 131 and the Cobras were bowled out for 485.The length of time taken meant that only a draw was possible and the Lions reached 113 for two in their second knock. Alviro Petersen, who is under pressure for his Test place was out for 44 and two in the either innings.Bowler of the week: Two national discards made sure they got noticed. Rusty Theron took seven wickets for the Warriors and Albie Morkel an economical five-for for the Titans. Both are bidding for limited overs places but to show their ability in the longer version of the game is never a bad thing.Batsman of the week: Neil McKenzie has been in rock solid form for the Lions all season. He continues to top the run charts with 771 runs and scored his third century this weekend. Perhaps a national recall is on the cards.
