A informação é do jornal catalão “Diari Més”.

Karnataka through after a thriller, take Baroda along

A wrap of the final day of the ninth round of Ranji Trophy matches in Group B

After a disappointing season, Karnataka needed a host of things to go their way – not only in their match, but in their group – for them to qualify. They needed Odisha to lose. Odisha lost. If they didn’t win by a bonus point, they needed Delhi to take a first-innings lead but not win their match. That happened too.As Delhi failed to take their opponents’ wickets, Karnataka were running out of time too, but they somehow kept producing the wickets on a flat Pune pitch against a determined Maharashtra side. After they managed to wrap Maharashtra’s second innings up for 561, Karnataka were left with 89 to chase in 13 overs. Not without drama, they did so with eight balls to spare, and progressed into the next round. At the start of the day, Maharashtra were 315 for 2, a deficit of only 158. Ankit Bawne began the day on 80 not out, and would remain undefeated. Karnataka kept pegging away at the other end. In the first session, HS Sharath picked up two wickets. After lunch, Maharashtra looked comfortable, but Syed Moinuddin broke through with the wicket of the dangerous Kedar Jadhav. Another partnership followed, this time between Bawne and Rahul Tripathi, but Sharath got rid of Tripathi before tea.Going into the final session, though, Maharashtra had already taken a lead of 40 runs, and had four wickets in hand. Karnataka’s state was not at all enviable. They had to take the wickets, and then wipe off all the additional runs. The clock kept ticking away.Abhimanyu Mithun, who took six wickets in the first innings, now provided the inspiration with the wickets of Shrikant Mundhe and Stayajit Bachhav in back-to-back overs. Still, Maharashtra had got 62 ahead by then. A little over 20 overs remained in the day’s play.To Karnataka’s annoyance, No. 10 Sachin Chaudhari swung his bat, and scored 14 off 19 balls, taking the lead to 84. It was all getting away from Karnataka, but Stuart Binny’s inspired move to get Amit Verma to bowl worked. The legspinner trapped Chaudhari, and Mithun finished the innings off in the next over. With Robin Uthappa not well, Karnataka opened with Kunal Kapoor and Lokesh Rahul. Kapoor managed just 8 off 12, and his wicket meant Karnataka would not win with a bonus point. That ensured Baroda, seven points adrift of Karnataka, were ensured qualification, but also that Karnataka would need Delhi to draw their game.Delhi fell short by three wickets in Nagpur, and Rahul and Binny hit their way towards a win. Rahul scored an unbeaten 42 off 34. Binny fell for 25 off 17, but fittingly their record-breaking wicketkeeper-batsman CM Gautam finished it off with 16 off eight balls. In the quarter-finals, Karnataka will face Saurashtra in Rajkot, and Baroda will be hosted by Mumbai. Maharashtra were relegated.
ScorecardDelhi needed to win their final game to progress to the next round or hope that Karnataka don’t won theirs, but were disappointed on both counts. On a flat track in Nagpur, having somehow enforced the follow-on on Vidarbha, Delhi could prise out only seven wickets on the final day. And in exceptional circumstances, Karnataka won their game moments after Delhi were denied.Shalabh Shrivastava provided the resistance for Vidarbha, who came into the match with a realistic chance of progressing but were frustrated by the flat pitch. Pradeep Sangwan, Vikas Mushra and Sumit Narwal picked up the wickets, but not fast enough. Delhi even got in 95 overs on the day, but couldn’t get past Shrivastava, who batted for five hours and 11 minutes.Vidarbha’s captain, Sairaj Bahutule, announced his retirement from first-class cricket after the match.
ScorecardIn the rain-affected, inconsequential match in Chennai, even a first-innings result was not possible. Haryana finished with 180 for 3 in response to Tamil Nadu’s 571 for 6 declared.

Somerset falter badly as Luke Fletcher, Dane Paterson orchestrate innings win for Notts

Attempts to make up for dismal first innings come to naught as home side blown away

David Hopps01-Sep-2021Nottinghamshire 448 (Patterson-White 101, Clarke 59, Fletcher 51) beat Somerset 107 (Fletcher 4-21) and 181 (Paterson 4-46) by an innings and 160 runsNot enough character, not enough discipline. Tom Abell was distraught over Somerset’s first-innings collapse. If he was that blunt to the media, what did he say in the dressing room? The message was abundantly clear: it was time to regain some respect, to show some discipline, to dig in.The temptation to imagine Somerset’s young thrusters looking in bewilderment at Abell’s instructions was irresistible.”Well, I’ve got this shot where I swivel yards outside off stump and slam it behind square leg for six,” Tom Lammonby might have ventured.”That’s nothing,” Tom Banton might have answered in turn. “I can slog-sweep the quicks over midwicket as well as anyone, if you like.””That’s just too high risk,” says Abell. “I want percentage shots.””Maybe I could swivel, but not so far?” offers Lammonby.”I never really understood percentages,” mutters Banton.More seasoned professionals, who have seen it all before, nod in acquiescence at such moments and privately tell themselves they will bat with serious intent. But while the older players will merely recalibrate slightly for the matches to follow, or just accept it as one of those things, Somerset’s younger pros have a greater challenge to find a workable Championship tempo.Banton and Lammonby have two half-centuries in 28 Championship starts. Banton averages around 21, Lammonby around 15. Banton’s Championship approach looks a bit shot; in fact, even in the shorter formats, the daring with which he burst on to the scene is now tinged with doubt. Lammonby just looks strokeless. Lewis Goldsworthy, too – a third talented young buck, although as yet not so highly feted – has a similar return.Banton and Lammonby are quite rightly regarded as two of the most thrilling white-ball batters to come out of Somerset for many a year. But you could feel their growing pains. Take chances, push the boundaries and make mistakes is the creed that has carried them so far, but bowlers are learning more about their games and, anyway, in the Championship there are deeper truths and they have yet to find them. Certainly, both need more get-out shots, workaday solutions that keep risk to a minimum. But when four-day cricket is not their first love – and no matter how much they keep up appearances it probably isn’t – finding solutions is psychologically even harder. They literally have run before they can walk.It was shortly after 5 o’clock when Somerset were beaten by an innings and 160 runs, dismissed second time around for 181 to follow up their 107 in the first innings. Everybody tried to dig in, nobody succeeded. They lasted 28 overs longer, but the irony was inescapable that their two highest-scoring batters, Jack Leach and Marchant de Lange, got there by accepting the inevitability of defeat and having a bit of a swing after tea.”We could have done that,” one could fancy that Banton and Lammonby mused in unison. For Nottinghamshire, the first phase in this four-game Division One climax could not have been more fruitful. Their first win at Taunton since 1985 was also their biggest victory margin in history against Somerset. Luke Fletcher and Dane Paterson bowled splendidly throughout, both taking seven wickets in the match as they outdid their Somerset counterparts. They began the season without a Championship win for nearly three years and are now very much in the title shake-up.For Somerset, the manner of defeat questioned their Championship credentials in the absence of two key seam-bowling allrounders, Craig Overton and Lewis Gregory. Leach needs a pitch offering some turn, but he is unlikely to get that against Yorkshire at Scarborough next week and when Lancashire come to Taunton the week after they will carry the legspin threat of Matt Parkinson in return.Somerset’s first three wickets fell to excellent deliveries – Steve Davies, edging one from Fletcher that seamed away; Abell, after 11 in 56 balls, edging one from Paterson that this time did not swing in but held its line; James Hildreth leaving Fletcher’s inswinger, his off stump rattled. For a long period on either side of lunch, Paterson to Lammonby was on repeat. Paterson, sensing that Lammonby had eschewed all temptation, repeatedly offered up deliveries wide outside off stump and Lammonby, a tall man crouching forward, let them pass. When Paterson took a breather, he had figures of 9-6-4-1 and Lammonby had failed to score off 23 balls from him, or the same ball, 23 times.Lammonby found some release when Notts skipper, Steven Mullaney, filled in with a few overs of medium pace – he swung it, too – and he also hooked Brett Hutton down to long leg. But on 34, from 95 balls, he pushed at a good ball from Hutton and was caught at first slip.Banton’s demise came when Paterson squared him up to be lbw. It put him out of his misery and that misery must not be allowed to fester. By the end of the over, only a single from Leach had prevented Paterson taking a triple-wicket maiden. Roelof van der Merwe clipped his first ball to square leg and Goldsworthy, another figure of undying responsibility, lost his off stump.Somerset were 86 for 7 after 48.5 overs, a penitent innings that had achieved nothing.Andy Hurry, Somerset’s director of cricket, was left to reflect upon it all. “We were in game on the first day, but Liam Patterson-White’s century took it away from us and since then we have been totally outplayed,” he said. “We came into the game with high expectations, but respect to Notts for how they went about things and we can certainly learn a few lessons from that. There were no redeeming features in our performance. We expect better individually and collectively from Somerset players.”

Aderllan destaca evolução defensiva do Vitória no Brasileirão

It was not a 150-run pitch – Karnataka coach

K Jeshwanth, the Karnataka coach, said it was primarily a batting failure that led to the six-wicket defeat, which secured Haryana their first semi-final berth since 1990-91

How did Karnataka let Haryana, a surprise quarter-finalist, overwhelm them on their own turf inside three days? K Jeshwanth, the Karnataka coach, said it was primarily a batting failure that led to the six-wicket defeat, which secured Haryana their first semi-final berth since 1990-91.Karnataka were dismissed for 151 in the first innings after they chose to bat. They lasted only 49.5 overs and were destroyed by 21 year-old Harshal Patel, who took 8 for 40. A medium-pacer playing his maiden season, Patel bowled with an upright wrist and seam, and got both movement and bounce from the first-day pitch, forcing edges from Karnataka’s batsmen. The score of 151 was Karnataka’s lowest in completed innings this season. Before this game, Karnataka had four totals in excess of 500, two in excess of 600. Against Haryana, they didn’t even make 300. The six-wicket loss was their first outright defeat.”Obviously the batting,” Jeshwanth said, when asked to explain the reason for defeat. “After making 151, it is difficult to come back. It was not a 150-run pitch. Harshal Patel bowled really well, putting the ball in the right areas. We did fight back – Binny bowled well and Aiyappa showed a lot of heart – but it was always going to be difficult. If we had scored 250 in the first innings – like we did in the second – we would have been able to make a match out of it.”Karnataka had been below full strength for significant parts of the season and Jeshwanth said that had impacted their campaign. Their original new-ball bowlers, Vinay Kumar (also the captain) and Abhimanyu Mithun, were in Australia with the Test squad. Manish Pandey, who hit an unbeaten double century against Mumbai, suffered from hernia. S Aravind, the third quick, was advised four weeks after the penultimate group match because of a knee injury.”The season – Manish Pandey’s absence made a difference to our batting, and three bowlers were also missing,” Jeshwanth said. “We had expected to reach the final, so it is a disappointment. Haryana is a team we were supposed to beat. We were also unlucky in this match; everything our batsmen missed took the edge.”The problem was with the batsmen getting out after getting set. We thought we had overcome it when we crossed 500 in the last match (against Uttar Pradesh).” In Shimoga, after conceding the first-innings lead to UP, the Karnataka middle order comprising Ganesh Satish, Amit Verma and Stuart Binny converted their starts into big hundreds. Against Haryana, they did not manage even a fifty. The other problem for Karnataka was their batsmen’s inability to convert starts. Robin Uthappa, Karnataka’s top scorer, failed to anchor both innings. On Monday, after the first drinks break, Uthappa was caught off a ball that pitched marginally outside off stump and angled away from him. In the second innings, after he had hit an aggressive fifty, Uthappa played across to a delivery that nipped back in to trap him lbw. On the third day, Binny gave it away by holing out to mid-on while attempting an ambitious loft.Amit Mishra, the Haryana captain, was pleased to cash in on Karnataka’s weakness. “At the end of day two the match was evenly poised. But we knew that the pressure was on Karnataka to not lose wickets quickly, but at the same time score runs in quick time,” he said. “So our aim was always not give away any easy runs and we stuck to our plan. We were confident of chasing down any target between 150-170 and we eventually managed to do that.”

ScorecardA brilliant all-round performance from Tom Smith secured a two-run victory forLancashire Lightning as Nottinghamshire Outlaws missed out on a semi-final placein the Clydesdale Bank 40.Smith hit 117 from 104 balls as Lancashire reached 248 for five, before takingfour for 48 to become the first player for the county to score a hundred andtake four wickets in a limited-overs game. Nottinghamshire’s West Indies international Darren Bravo hit a run-a-ball 62 while captain Chris Read almost snatched an unlikely victory with 64 from 50 balls, only to become one of Kyle Hogg’s victims as the seamer picked up threefor 63.Needing four from the last ball with Hogg on a hat-trick, Darren Pattinsoncould only hit two as Nottinghamshire finished on 246 for nine at Trent Bridge. Lancashire openers Stephen Moore and Smith made early headway with the bat as the inexperienced Nottinghamshire seamers Brett Hutton and Jake Ball leaked runs.Pattinson did have Moore caught at mid-off by Ali Brown for 12 but Smith andSteven Croft then put on 101 in 15 overs before Croft sliced Steven Mullaney toshort third man for 32. Karl Brown played on to Mullaney before Smith holed out at deep midwicket off Graeme White soon after, with Gareth Cross caught at cover off the returningPattinson.Nottinghamshire changed their batting order and Mullaney opened with veteranBrown, Mullaney hitting four fours before he was caught at mid-off for 22 offSmith. Brown, making a farewell appearance before retiring, had made 18 when he wascaught down the leg side off Smith, who then had Riki Wessels pinned lbw.Bravo combined with Scott Elstone to add 71 in 11 overs for the fourth wicket, bringing up his half-century with a pulled six off Hogg over mid-on. Elstone miscued a full toss from Hogg to mid-on, and when spinner Stephen Parry removed Bravo and Paul Franks in quick succession, the visitors looked to be cruising home.Read returned the momentum in Nottinghamshire’s direction in a 71-runpartnership with White, who was bowled in the penultimate over with the homeside needing nine for victory.Former England international Read was then caught on the long-on boundary andHutton sliced to point as Hogg held his nerve to confirm the win.
