Chris Sutton reacts to Celtic’s late, late deal

[ad_pod ]Chris Sutton followed Celtic’s Deadline Day drama to the last minute as the Hoops finally signed a right-back with Jeremy Toljan agreeing a deal. There was less than 90 minutes left in the window when word finally came through that the Borussia Dortmund right-back had signed up until the end of the season.

Most Celtic fans had been hoping for a permanent signing to put a brick in place for July’s European qualifying ties but as the transfer window reached the final day the priority shifted to simply getting a deal over the line.

Ironically Mikael Lustig has been one of Celtic’s top performers in their last two matches, but Celtic need an alternative to the 32-year-old full-back if they’re to steer past Valencia in Europe.

Toljan will meet up with his new team-mates as Celtic assess his fitness but a debut at St Johnstone on Sunday would seem unlikely due to his lack of match sharpness – he has only featured in the Regionalliga West for Dortmund this season.

On Wednesday Celtic have a closed doors friendly arranged with Sunderland, where Toljan can get a run out as Brendan Rodgers assesses whether his new signing is ready to go into the side to face Valencia on February 14th.

Robert Taylor opened the scoring for Inter Miami in the 39th minute after they had dominated much of the first half. Minutes before the Finnish international's goal, Messi nearly scored a worldie of a free-kick, with it just being cleared off the line.

Going into halftime up a goal, the Herons played confidently the rest of the match. However, RSL came out with fire in their eyes after the break and arguably could have scored three or four times. Their lack of clinical finishing is what cost them on Wednesday evening.

In the 83rd minute, a moment of magic saw Messi and old friend Luis Suarez combine to set up youngster Diego Gomez for the dagger, making it 2-0 on the night.

    DID YOU KNOW?

This was the first time since August 2020 that former Barcelona teammates Messi, Suarez, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets shared a locker room together for a competitive match.

    THE MVP

Robert Taylor: The winger has been rumored to be available on a transfer this offseason, and Wednesday proved why, if Miami does not want him, another MLS side should pounce immediately. His goal came via a goalkeeper error, sure, but the moment was about being in the right place and the right time – and he did exactly that. He's earned himself another start on Sunday against the Galaxy.

  • THE BIG LOSER

Pablo Mastroeni: The RSL boss has long been the subject of criticism, from both fans and pundits and even the casual viewers. His side always seem to sneak into the playoffs and produce an impressive result or two, but the way his club played Wednesday is why that criticism exists. They were dry and stagnant, their entire team was sluggish and their performance was not up standard. However, there were moments that were so incredibly bright – but those moments came from individuals, not tactics or formations. This result is, unfortunately, on Pablo.

Ferguson keeps Auckland on top with slim win

Seamer Lachie Ferguson’s figures of 5 for 68 in Otago’s second innings stretched his match haul to eight wickets as Auckland claimed a narrow 10-run win in Dunedin.Chasing 218, Otago were bowled out for 207 in 49.3 overs and to add their woes, offspinner Mark Craig was struck flush on the hand by a Ferguson beamer while batting. The injury forced Craig off the field, and is likely to put him completely out of action for at least six weeks.Ferguson was quick to dismiss the openers on the third day and leave Otago in early trouble at 33 for 2. Derek de Boorder counterattacked, but lacked support from the other end. He struck 81 off 76 before he was bowled by Ferguson. Allrounder Colin de Grandhomme complemented Ferguson well by taking two wickets. Auckland eventually walked away with 18 points. The match was set up by Robert O’Donnell’s 87, which helped Auckland to 255 in the first innings, and a lead of 78 runs, after they were asked to bat. Ferguson and Grandhomme had done the damage in Otago’s first innings as well, with combined figures of 27.5 -8- 66-6. Opener Ryan Duffy carried his bat for 90* off 163, but the other end was a case of revolving doors as Otago were bowled out for 177.Auckland collapsed to 139 within 51 overs in the second innings as Craig Smith took 4 for 35, but had the cushion of the first-innings advantage, and a solid bowling attack.Wellington defended 183 against Canterbury, courtesy three-fors from Ian McPeake and Jeetan Patel. Canterbury were skittled for 129 on a maniac final day, which witnessed the fall of 20 wickets.Having been inserted, Wellington made 206 on the back of England professional Scott Borthwick’s century, which included 13 fours. After rain wiped out the second day, Canterbury, riding on fifties from openers Leo Carter and Michael Davidson, opted for a bold declaration at 159 for 2.Fast bowler Hamish Bennett raised Canterbury’s hopes with figures of 5 for 54, which dismissed Wellington for only 136, with only three batsmen managing double figures, the highest being Michael Papps’ 51 at the top of the order. However, Canterbury’s hopes faded away as they succumbed to a collapse of their own. Each of their top-four batsmen reached double figures, but none managed a substantial contribution.Big centuries by Daniel Flynn and Bharat Popli set up a 115-run win for Northern Districts over Central Districts in Hamilton. After being put in to bat, Northern Districts piled up 458 for 6 declared on the back of a 258-run partnership between Flynn and Popli. Opener Flynn struck 26 fours during his 158 while Popli collected 27 fours during his 172.Central Districts were then bowled out for 293, with several of their batsmen failing to capitalise on their starts. Riding on a 165-run lead, Northern Districts put on 332 for 7, led by fifties from Dean Brownlie, Popli and Daryl Mitchell’s 49-ball 72, before declaring to set a target of 498. Central Districts showed more fight in the second innings, but came up short. Tom Bruce led the way for them with 166 off 233 balls and No. 8 Bevan Small scored 76. Spinners Joe Walker and Anton Devcich wheeled away for 57.2 overs, to share eight wickets between them, to seal the win. Devcich finished with eight wickets in the match.

I wasn't given enough time – Moores

Peter Moores has expressed his “frustration” had not being allowed more time to develop the England side after his second spell as coach was brought to an abrupt end on Saturday with confirmation of his sacking. It came less than a day after he had been in charge of the side during the washed out ODI against Ireland, in Malahide, but that followed a winter of woeful limited-overs results then, most recently, the drawn Test series in West Indies which ended with defeat in Barbados – a reversal that has proved the final straw. However, Moores leaves the international arena – for the second time – retaining the utmost belief in his abilities as a coach and believes that England will reap the benefits of what he has done over the past year.”My record in developing players stands for itself and though we have had some frustrations along the way I am confident that this team will go on and bring the success the supporters desperately want to see,” he said.”I knew when I took on the role that this was going to be a tough period for English cricket and I would need time and support to get new players through. My frustration is not being given that time.”I believe time will show that I have been instrumental in the identification and development of a new group of England players who will go on and bring honour and success to the England badge. I am a passionate Englishman who believes in hard work and an investment in the right people will bring its rewards.”There are strong parallels with Moores’ previous spell as England coach. As in the 2007-2008 stint, when he recalled Graeme Swann, first selected Matt Prior and brought together James Anderson and Stuart Broad as the new-ball pair, there have been signs of promise from England’s younger players – particularly in the Test arena.Moeen Ali, Jos Buttler and Chris Jordan have been introduced to the Test team, Gary Ballance has flourished, Ben Stokes showed glimpses of his promise on recall in West Indies, while Joe Root has bounced back emphatically from his poor tour of Australia. There has, however, been far less to cling to in the limited-overs formats with series defeats against Sri Lanka home and away, India and then the first-round exit at the World Cup.”To the players I want to say thanks for your support and commitment and I will be gutted not to work with every single one of you going forward. I wish you all the very best for the future,” Moores added.

Stevens talks of 'brutal' corruption tangle

Darren Stevens has spoken openly for the first time about the circumstances that caused him to become embroiled in the Bangladesh anti-corruption enquiry which saw Mohammad Ashraful banned for eight years

Darren Steven’s Story

Darren Stevens has spoken openly for the first time about the circumstances that caused him to become embroiled in the Bangladesh anti-corruption enquiry which saw their former captain Mohammad Ashraful banned for eight years.Stevens, one of county cricket’s longest-serving players, was charged with failing to report an alleged suspicious approach while he was playing in the Bangladesh Premier League two years ago.He was cleared by a Bangladesh Cricket Board anti-corruption tribunal in February last year but with the assistance of the Professional Cricketers Association he is now warning fellow professionals to report the merest hint of wrongdoing to avoid the “brutal” experience which threatened his future as a professional cricketer.Dhaka Gladiators’ managing director Shihab Chowdhury was banned for fixing, with former New Zealand batsman Lou Vincent and Sri Lanka batsman Kaushal Lokuarachchi banned for not reporting a bookmaker’s approach.Stevens, the Kent allrounder, has now appeared in a DVD, produced by the PCA, which will be shown to all county players before the start of the new domestic season as part of an updated anti-corruption code.He tells how he was playing for the Dhaka Gladiators when he was asked by the owner if he would captain the side in a match against Chittagong but that Mohammad Ashraful would still “run the game on the pitch”. Stevens refused and was later contact by Alan Peacock of the ICC anti-corruption unit.He relates: “Over the phone, he said to me: ‘Can we have a meeting about Bangladesh?’ It wasn’t too bad at the start but then it got worse and worse and worse.”When I got two charges through, I wouldn’t wish it on anybody, it was brutal. The next meeting was a four-and-a-half hour meeting in London. After that, it was hours and hours and hours of meetings with my lawyer going through everything, going through how the next six months up to the trial were probably going to pan out.”The trial in Bangladesh was in a small room in a bank with cameras everywhere: all different lawyers from all over the place in the same room. You just felt claustrophobic. I was there for nearly four weeks, five days a week in court going through everything. Just sitting there in court was more nervewracking than anything I have ever done.”I was on the stand for seven hours, five hours on the day and two-and-half hours on the morning. It was really hard. Cricket is my life and has been for 25 to 30 years. Every day that I was playing, it just felt like it was going to be my last game.”The former Essex fast bowler Mervyn Westfield was jailed for his involvement in spot-fixing, but after his release he participated in a comprehensive education and awareness initiative for the PCA.Stevens, too, hopes that talking about his experiences will help other players to appreciate the implications of failing to report any suspicious approach immediately.”It was horrific. Because I didn’t report at that time a suspicious act I have gone through hell over the last two years,” he said.”There are so many opportunities around the world now and if Bangladesh did come back up again I would not stop anyone going and playing out there. I would encourage them to go and play.”But I don’t want anybody to go through what I actually went through over those two years. In any of these tournaments anywhere around the world if you do come across anything suspicious just report it immediately.”
