Vincent Barnes in running for Bangladesh job

The Bangladesh Cricket Board has reportedly zeroed in on South Africa’s assistant coach, Vincent Barnes, as a candidate to coach the national team

ESPNcricinfo staff01-Jun-2011The Bangladesh Cricket Board has reportedly zeroed in on South Africa’s assistant coach, Vincent Barnes, as a candidate to coach the national team following the departure of Australian Jamie Siddons after a disappointing World Cup campaign. Stuart Law, the interim coach of Sri Lanka, is also in the running but there are reports of his chances failing due to a disagreement over conditions with the BCB.”We are still in negotiations with Stuart Law. We are interested in him but we have given him some conditions,” BCB president Mustafa Kamal told . “If he accepts those, we’ll go for him. It means our talks with him are not over.”If it doesn’t go through with Law, we will take a final decision on Barnes. If we take him, it is nothing to be worried about because we’ll take a specialist coach for batting and bowling.”The BCB hopes to ratify the appointment of a new coach at their board meeting on Saturday, June 4, and Kamal said talks with Barnes were at “an advanced stage”.When contacted by ESPNcricinfo, however, Barnes only said, “I’ve been approached [by the BCB] and that’s where it ended.”Cricket South Africa are also scheduled to unveil their new coach on Monday, June 6. Although Barnes did not apply for the South Africa job, CSA could still consider him a candidate, and he was said to be considering a role in the future set-up.

Ponting hails Johnson's 'all-time great' spell

Mitchell Johnson has spied the doubts in the eyes of the England batsmen after regaining his powers as one of the game’s most potent fast bowlers. Johnson responded from his dropping in Adelaide with nine wickets in the third Test, including a game-turning effort on the second day which Ricky Ponting called “one of the all-time great Ashes spells”.His inswingers to the right-handers at 140kph make him a brutal weapon and he was a constant threat to England’s batsmen during the 267-run victory. “I saw a bit of doubt in their minds throughout the second innings and when that ball is swinging around it puts a lot of doubt in people’s minds,” Johnson said. “But there are still two Tests to go and I’ve got to take it one at a time, keep trying to improve as a cricketer.”Johnson spent two weeks rebuilding his action in the nets with Troy Cooley, the bowling coach, before the contest and Ponting was hugely satisfied with the results. England were 0 for 78 in the first innings before crashing to 187 after Johnson’s stunning burst of 4 for 7 in the opening session of the second day.”The ball was swinging and Mitch’s spell was probably one of the all-time great Ashes spells,” Ponting said. “Him coming into the game under a bit of pressure as well, it was an amazing achievement and set up this victory and the series for us.”The spell has transformed him and transformed how they think about him in the English dressing room. Some of the deliveries he bowled will have them seriously thinking about how they play him. I heard rumours coming into the game that they had Mitch’s type of bowling worked out – I am not sure they think that now. You don’t end up with the record he has by fluke, you have to have a lot of skill and commitment.”After taking 6 for 38 in the first innings, Johnson backed up with 3 for 44 in the second as he and Ryan Harris knocked England over for 123. Harris matched his team-mate’s haul of nine wickets, finishing with a career-best 6 for 47.Harris’ collection included four of the five victims on the final morning, with the crucial breakthroughs being the lbw of Ian Bell and the edge of Matt Prior. He has played only four Tests but already has 20 wickets and has quickly become a key member of the developing attack.”He’s not put a foot wrong and is at home in the international game,” Ponting said. “It was great to see him get that reward. He has toiled away all week and to see him contribute the way he has is great for him and the team.”Harris’ only worry is the state of his right knee, which was operated on a couple of times during the off-season. The pain will stay with him for the rest of his career, but it is not going to stop him from taking part in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.”He’s just taken six-for in a Test match so he’s fine,” Ponting said. “He’s got a couple of extra days off now so that will help.”

New role but same old Murali

Muttiah Muralitharan’s team-mates expect no lessening of the offspinner’s powers as he begins life as an international limited-overs specialist

Kumar Sangakkara loves having Muttiah Muralitharan in his side•AFP

Muttiah Muralitharan’s team-mates expect no lessening of the offspinner’s powers as he begins life as an international limited-overs specialist. Murali, 38, retired from Tests in July with a record 800 wickets and after taking a break has been increasing his load ahead of engagements in Australia over the next three weeks. He is part of the squad that has just landed in the country, a place in which he has often been treated poorly on both sides of the fence. The captain Kumar Sangakkara smiles when he talks about Murali’s impact on the team and he will bolster the squad after missing the home tri-series victory in August. But Sangakkara turns serious when discussing criticism of Murali. “It’s always been unjustifiable if Murali has not been received well in any country,” Sangakkara said. “Just for the bowler he is, the character he is, he is a wonderful human being. However the fans react to him, or whether they accept him, it doesn’t matter in the long run because the whole cricketing world love him for who he is. And he’s very secure in that.”Murali was called for throwing at the MCG in 1995-96 and boycotted the 2004 tour here following comments from John Howard, Australia’s prime minister, over his action. While he was adored during the tsunami fundraising match in Melbourne in 2005, he was part of a Sri Lankan group that had eggs thrown at it in Hobart two years ago.”We just want him to enjoy himself and play for as long as he wants to play and be part of our team,” Sangakkara said. “It’s a joy to see him play. For us to have him in our side is a huge boost of confidence.”Murali has come to Australia via South Africa, where he was part of Chennai’s Champions League T20 victory, taking three wickets in the final. In 22 ODIs Down Under Murali has 31 victims at 32.70, with the home batsmen usually content to see out his overs. The coach Trevor Bayliss expects Murali to benefit from his Test-free workload and not suffer during the transition. “At this stage of his career having a rest every now and then will be good for him,” Bayliss said. “He’s just had a little bit of time off and he’s come back from the Champions League full of beans, and is bowling really well in the nets.”The Sri Lankans open their tour with a one-day game against Queensland at the Gabba on Friday and have some more fine-tuning before a Twenty20 in Perth on October 31 and three ODIs the following week. While it is hard to know what long-term benefits the visitors can achieve from such a short series, Sangakkara’s aims are clear.”Hopefully we get a victory in the series, that’ll be great for us going forward,” he said. “We know how tough it is in Australia. We’ve been here before and we’re yet to win, this is a great challenge to the guys.”

Olha a bomba!

Samba no escudo do rival

Rangers beast set for contract talks

An update has emerged on Rangers midfielder Scott Arfield, regarding plans for his future at Ibrox…

What’s the talk?

According to the Glasgow Evening Times [29 January, page 47], the Gers are poised to enter contract talks with the Canada international.

His contract is up at the end of the season and the Scottish giants now want to offer him fresh terms in an attempt to keep him at the club moving forward.

GvB needs it

Gio van Bronckhorst will be buzzing with this news as he needs Arfield to put pen to paper on a contract extension before his deal expires in the summer.

The 33-year-old has dipped in and out of form this season and there have been moments where it has looked as if he needs replacing. He has lost 59% of his duels this term and missed a whopping five ‘big chances’ in front of goal, which highlights some of the issues he has had throughout the campaign.

However, just when you may think his time is up at Ibrox he pops up with another moment to show why he needs to stay. He came off the bench against Livingston earlier this week and scored the winning goal with a sublime first-time, improvised, finish into the far corner in a 1-0 win for the Gers, proving that he still has it in him to be a huge player for the club.

Earlier this month, van Bronckhorst admitted that he does not want to see the veteran leave at the end of the campaign, saying: “Scott is an important player to have around. He is definitely someone I want to have longer at Rangers.

“Hopefully we can welcome him next season as well.”

The £16k-per-week beast is still capable of producing moments of magic to win vital points for Rangers and that is why the Dutch head coach needs this key deal to go through. Arfield still has value to offer to the Light Blues and Ross Wilson must ensure that he is able to agree terms with the midfielder over a contract extension in the coming weeks and months.

Hopefully, the ex-Burnley man will continue to provide big goals to help Rangers on their way to another Premiership title and can then celebrate with the trophy and a new contract to head into the 2022/23 campaign.

Newcastle keen on Steven Bergwijn

An exciting update has emerged on Newcastle United and their interest in Tottenham forward Steven Bergwijn…

What’s the talk?

According to 90min journalist Graeme Bailey, the Magpies are keen on a deal to sign the Netherlands international this month if an opportunity presents itself. The attacker is not happy with his situation in north London and the Toon could swoop in to rescue his season.

He tweeted: “Newcastle United interested in Steven Bergwijn – if he is available. Ajax have also keen on potential loan – player would like more playing time, but it remains to be seen if Antonio Conte will let him out in January.”

This comes amid rumours of a move for Chris Wood, who the Toon are believed to be close to signing.

Newcastle’s next Kluivert

Eddie Howe could land his own Patrick Kluivert for Newcastle by signing another Dutch beast in the January transfer window.

Kluivert, a Champions League winner with Ajax, scored 13 goals in 37 games for the Magpies and found the back of the net five times in six UEFA Cup outings. He scored 122 goals in 257 matches for Barcelona and 40 in 79 caps for the Netherlands, highlighting the immense career he enjoyed, including a fine spell on Tyneside.

Bergwijn could come in and have a similar impact at St James’ Park if he is able to find his best form. He has produced just five goals and 10 assists in 64 games for Tottenham, but his form for PSV in the Netherlands was exceptional as he scored 31 goals and provided 41 assists in 149 matches in Eindhoven.

In the 2019/20 campaign, he managed 14 goals and 12 assists in the Eredivisie as he showed that he can score and create goals on a regular basis. If Howe can get him to reproduce that form with a move to Newcastle, he could then have a Kluivert of his own at St James’ Park and be able to call upon a player who is capable of winning vital points for the Magpies in the second half of the current campaign.

If Bergwijn is available on a loan deal, then it could be perfect for the Magpies as they would not be burdened by the prospect of paying his wages in the long-term if he flops or if they are relegated to the Championship. This means that it could be an ideal move for Newcastle which makes a lot of sense for all parties involved, and that is why Howe must work hard to ensure that the move gets over the line before the end of the month.

Journalist makes Trossard to West Ham claim

Taking to Twitter, journalist Pete O’Rourke has broken a Sunday morning West Ham transfer development involving Brighton forward Leandro Trossard.

The Lowdown: West Ham attacker hunt…

Manager David Moyes is on the look-out for a new forward as the final hours of January loom, with the Hammers having until 11pm on Monday to finally bring an attacker through the door at Rush Green.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-news-copy/” title=”West Ham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

They are apparently in talks for Reims ace Hugo Ekitike and have been very recently linked with a few others out of France, including Senegal international Bamba Dieng or Marseille.

However, breaking news this morning, O’Rourke says they’ve now made a ‘shock’ approach.

The Latest: West Ham make Trossard approach…

According to his sources, West Ham have ‘made a shock enquiry’ for Seagulls attacker Trossard as Moyes and recruitment chief Rob Newman seemingly cast their net of targets wider and wider.

“Understand West Ham have made a shock enquiry for Brighton attacker Leandro Trossard.” he explained on Twitter.

The Verdict: Right move?

The Belgium international, currently in the prime of his career, has only scored 14 goals over his 87 Premier League appearances at the Amex since signing from KRC Genk in 2019.

Numbers like these don’t exactly point to a prolific option in the forward positions and we believe other targets, like the much younger Ekitike, should be made a priority over the 27-year-old.

Valued at around £15.3m by Transfermarkt, it is very debatable whether West Ham should be matching a figure in and around that amount for Trossard.
