Warne's injury could be a career-threatening one

MELBOURNE, Dec 15 AAP – Shane Warne’s dislocated shoulder has put Australia’s World Cup plans in a spin, with fears his latest injury could be a career-threatening one.Warne dislocated his right bowling shoulder when he dived to try to cut off a drive from England’s Craig White during Australia’s 89-run win at the MCG.Warne was taken off the ground on a stretcher and will undergo arthroscopy surgery tomorrow to allow specialists to determine the extent of the damage.Australian physiotherapist Errol Alcott said a best-case scenario would see Warne miss four to six weeks of cricket. That means he will miss the remainder of the Australian summer but aim to return in time for World Cup starting in February in South Africa. But Alcott hinted the injury could be career-threatening given Warne has previously undergone shoulder reconstruction.”It’s a good question,” Alcott said when asked if the injury could end Warne’s brilliant career.”I think it’s one of those situations where we need to wait and see what damage has been done and assess it from there.”Also we haven’t seen a dislocation in a legspinner. In fact, we haven’t seen a dislocation in any of the Australian team that I can remember so it is new territory.”But Shane Warne, in particular, given his pre-history, some of these questions we’ll have to wait and see to be answered.”Warne’s shoulder was popped back into place by team doctors before he was taken to hospital.Alcott said while the dislocation was a typical one, Warne’s previous surgery could complicate his recovery.”It’s a little bit difficult because we don’t know the extent of the damage,” he said.”So best-case it just stretched the capsule and the joint popped forward and it’s four to six weeks and you can only add time on if there’s something further been injured.”Alcott said it was vital Warne did everything he could to return to full fitness regardless of the World Cup.”I think it’s just a question of Shane Warne’s shoulder getting better as soon as possible and with as little chance of re-injury,” he said.”We can’t use the World Cup as a milestone for his rehab.”Australian captain Ricky Ponting said Warne’s injury – which came when the home side was well on its way to victory – had taken the gloss of the team’s win.”It was just a disappointing and sad thing to happen,” he said.”The way he’s trained and put in in the last 12 months and the way he’s been bowling, it’s sad that something like that happens to someone who’s worked so hard.”Ponting said Warne was “squealing” in pain and said the legspinner knew he had suffered a serious injury immediately.”He knew straight away, he was saying to all of us that he thought it was out and he could feel it was out of joint so he had a pretty good idea straight away,” he said.Warne who’ll also miss the remaining two Ashes Tests, missed much of the 1998-99 season after needing a reconstruction of the shoulder. He also was out of action for several months during the 2000-01 season when he broke the spinning finger in his right hand in a fielding accident.England captain Nasser Hussain, who was bowled by Warne for 19 today, said the injury was a blow to world cricket.”Let’s hope it’s not serious because he got himself really fit, he had a shoulder problem a few years ago which he’s just now coming back from and bowling exactly how Shane Warne wants to bowl,” Hussain said.”There must have been a lot of hard work and effort put in to be where he is now and let’s hope it’s not too serious because world cricket needs Warnie bowling the way he has done in the last few months.””Let’s hope he’s out for a couple of weeks and then is back to his best.”

Gers fans livid at Club 1872 move

Glasgow Rangers fans are livid after supporters group Club 1872 expelled the Gers’ chaplain Reverend Stuart McQuarrie from the group.

Club 1872 are set to become a bigger part of the make-up of the Gers in the coming years. Shareholder and former chairman Dave King has agreed to sell his stake in the 55-time Scottish champions to Club 1872 over the next 36 months (BBC), meaning the supporters group will own more than a quarter of a club by then if they can complete the transaction (The Herald).

They are trying to raise over £13m to purchase the shares, meaning they need the support of thousands of Rangers supporters. But it seems they have done little to endear themselves after they expelled McQuarrie from the group. This, certainly, is not a good luck, and comes after criticism has already been aimed at the group (via The Scottish Sun).

The news was shared on Twitter by @Follow_Follow_, and it attracted plenty of attention from the supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Let’s see what the fans had to say about the McQuarrie news below

“This is all a bit embarrassing, isn’t it? Club 1872 are in self destruct mode. Not a good look at all.”

“Worrying stuff, Club1872 have not been transparent at all to backers. Zero communication to fans but are a self-described fan organisation. We must stop funding directly to Club1872 to prevent them from buying new shares. Let’s also not forget them blocking Rangers fans on here.”

“I’ve really no idea how the C1872 powers that be were convinced this could somehow be a good idea. Stopped my DD last year so no longer a circus to worry about for me now.”

“They aren’t doing themselves any favours, are they ?”

“I’ll pay my sub till the egm and vote for change, if it doesn’t work I’m out. Was willing to listen but to expel the club chaplain is a stain on the organisation.”

Crystal Palace tipped to sign Josh King

Crystal Palace have been tipped to sign Josh King this summer after his Everton release, and the 29-year-old could be a superb addition to Patrick Vieira’s side.

Bent tips King for Selhurst Park switch

In an exclusive interview with Football Transfer Tavern, former Palace man Marcus Bent suggested that Vieira should be looking at signing the former Bournemouth man on a free transfer this summer.

He said:

“A player that has talent. Is Palace the right move for him from Everton? I think it would be a massive signing for Crystal Palace.

“Would it be the move he wants? I’m not sure, but it’d literally get him playing and get his confidence up. He’d be playing with a team that’s fired up, new manager [Patrick] Vieira coming in, still in the Premier League.”

Would he be a good signing for Palace?

Palace have been linked with a move for King in the past, so he is clearly a player they are aware of, and his signing would represent a low-risk deal with a potentially big return, if the 29-year-old can rediscover the form he showed at Bournemouth.

During his time with the Cherries, the Norway international would contribute 53 goals and 19 assists in 184 appearances, including 16 goals in the 2016/17 Premier League campaign, which emphasises how dangerous he can be when he is at his best.

After a baffling spell at Everton where he was signed in January but made just 11 appearances from the bench totalling 138 minutes, King will be looking for a fresh start and Palace could offer him Premier League football, so it is a move that makes sense for both parties.

After he scored a brace in a game against Newcastle in 2019, former Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe was full of praise for the striker, saying:

“Josh is outstanding physically, technically and mentally – he has the complete package, a little bit of everything.”

Therefore, he definitely seems like the sort of player that Vieira would love to have in his squad for next season. He could provide healthy competition for current attacking options Wilfried Zaha, Christian Benteke and Jordan Ayew, so the French manager should definitely be looking into bringing the forward, who has 69 goals in his career thus far, to Selhurst Park on a free transfer.

Palmer says Leeds won’t accept less than £30m for Raphinha

Carlton Palmer has told The Transfer Tavern that he doesn’t think that Leeds wouldn’t sell Raphinha for anything less than £30m.

The Brazilian winger enjoyed an impressive first campaign in the Premier League and has been attracting interest from Manchester United and Liverpool, who’ll both be trying to close the gap on Manchester City next season.

Raphinha scored six times and chipped in with nine assists as Leeds marked their first season back in the top-flight by finishing 9th, with the former Rennes attacker a key part of the recent success under Marcelo Bielsa.

He has still has four years remaining on the long-term deal he signed 12 months ago, meaning either of the North West sides would have to dig into their pockets to be able to prize Raphinha away from Elland Road this summer.

And whilst he’s only valued at £22.5m by Transfermarket, Palmer exclusively told The Transfer Tavern that the 24-year-old is worth plenty more in the current market:

“I certainly don’t think Leeds would entertain an offer for him less than £30m the way the Premier League is at the moment.”

Bielsa’s men will be looking to build on their top-half finish by mounting a challenge for the European places next season, but will need to keep all of their best players, so they’ll be hoping the Brazilian’s head doesn’t get turned should either Liverpool or United come calling.

Portsmouth considering Stockley swoop

Portsmouth must sanction a deal to sign Preston North End striker Jayden Stockley this summer.

What’s the talk?

According to London News Online, Portsmouth have joined the race to sign Preston North End centre-forward Stockley following his loan spell with Charlton. The report claims that Pompey are keen on a deal for the 27-year-old and that they are set to compete with Charlton for his signature in the coming weeks.

Stockley is said to be pursuing a move to a club in the south as he prepares to leave Lancashire, with Charlton and Portsmouth both viable options in that regard. However, the Lancashire Post reported earlier this week that Stockley’s first choice for a permanent transfer this summer would be Charlton.

At-the-time Charlton boss Lee Bowyer labeled Stockley as a  “nightmare for defenders” earlier this season as he impressed on loan at The Valley. He told London News Online:

“If there is any positive to take from tonight, it’s Jayden’s performance.

“Balls that went up to him. Even balls that he shouldn’t even hold onto and keep, he keeps. He’s just a constant threat. Every time there’s a ball going into the box, you’re thinking, where is he? He must be a nightmare for defenders.

“Our midfielders getting around him, when he can’t score himself he’s always looking to tee up someone else. Four or five occasions, we had shots that came from his lay-offs and their defenders got good blocks on them. I thought Jayden was very good tonight.”

Could strike gold

Portsmouth could strike gold if they are able to secure a deal for Stockley this summer. The Preston man enjoyed a superb loan spell with Charlton and put himself in the shop window with a string of impressive displays under Bowyer and then Nigel Adkins in League One. Pompey have seemingly taken notice of his performances and now need to act quickly if they want to land him ahead of Charlton.

Stockley favours a switch to The Valley but he may not get to make the decision if Portsmouth are able to offer Preston a more attractive financial package than Charlton can. It will be down to Preston to decide whether or not Charlton make an acceptable offer and Portsmouth could throw their cards on the table with a bid to tempt them into selling him to Danny Cowley’s side.

The attacker provided Charlton with 10 goals and assists in 22 League One appearances, whilst John Marquis scored 16 goals in 41 games for Portsmouth in the league. This suggests that they are on a similar level in terms of goalscoring, but Stockley’s overall game could prove to be an upgrade on Marquis. Stockley averaged a superb WhoScored rating of 7.41 for Charlton, winning 9.8 aerial battles per game, whilst Marquis averaged an unimpressive score – in comparison – of 6.79 and he only won 2.7 aerial battles per game.

Therefore, Stockley could be an improvement on Marquis. However, Cowley could also opt to play both of them and look to go direct to hurt teams next season. Marquis and Stockley are both proven goalscorers at League One level and their firepower at the top end of the pitch could improve Portsmouth’s chances of securing promotion to the Championship.

Forget about my action, get on with the game, says Akhtar

Shoaib Akhtar is confident that all the hullabaloo over his action is a thing of the past, and now that he has passed the scrutiny of international umpires, especially the Aussie Darrell Hair, in Bangladesh and here in Sharjah, there is no further

Agha Akbar13-Feb-2002Shoaib Akhtar is confident that all the hullabaloo over his action is a thing of the past, and now that he has passed the scrutiny of international umpires, especially the Aussie Darrell Hair, in Bangladesh and here in Sharjah, there is no further need to talk about it.

“Forget about my action, let us get on with the game,” Shoaib said, feeling supremely confident that he had left the controversy behind him. “I’ve been through three examinations by the University of Western Australia’s department of Human Movement, and in each of their reports they’ve said that it is the overextension of the arms and joints which creates the illusion. And the ICC’s circulation of that report has helped my case,” he added, displaying the overextension in both his arms for the benefit of the journalists present at the briefing. He felt reassured because his manager [Yawar Saeed] had spoken to Hair after the second Test against the West Indies, and there was no report against his action. As for Michael Holding helping him, he said he didn’t go through the modification programme because there was nothing to modify.”I’ve never modified my action… It cannot be modified,” Shoaib said. Talking about Holding’s suggestions to him on the nets here, he said that the former West Indian pace ace had pointed out that his left arm was falling away. Holding’s advice was to keep it straight and close to his body, which Holding thought would add to his pace and momentum.”Mr Holding is a very senior cricketer and when he says something, one has to listen to him”, Shoaib said. That was routine stuff compared to the shocking statement that he had never tried to cross the 100-mile barrier. Having captured the imagination of cricketing aficionados all over the world with his express pace in the 1999 World Cup, at around 97 mph, Shoaib had bowled the second fastest recorded delivery after Jeff Thomson’s 99-mile thunderbolt in the late 1970s. Afterwards, he was blamed for sacrificing the team’s interest for personal glory by aiming for the 100-mile mark at the expense of accuracy. But Akhtar, having been through a long and tedious rehabilitation programme after a variety of injuries which resulted from his body not standing his relentless quest for pace, has obviously learnt his lessons. He is consistently more accurate now than he has ever been in his career, and is taking wickets as well.”Now I’m aiming to contribute to the team’s cause. It’s too early for me to think of 350 or 450 wickets. I don’t have such thoughts. I just want to take wickets, and even if I take two or three wickets in every innings, I want them to help the team, to come at a juncture when the team benefits,” he said.He especially thanked the PCB and its chairman, Lt. Gen. Tauqir Zia for standing by him through a very difficult period in his career, when he struggled with twin problems of a spate of injuries and unending controversy regarding his action. “There was nothing personal in it. The PCB chairman thought that I’m an asset to for the Pakistan team, and that is why he backed me up. I am really grateful for all the support that I got from him and the Board”, said Akhtar.

Norwich resigned to losing Buendia

Daniel Farke and Norwich City are resigned to losing the services of Emi Buendia this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by David Ornstein for The Athletic, who claims that the Canaries have acknowledged that the time is right for the 24-year-old to take the next step in his career, and will not stand in the way of the attacking midfielder’s exit if a club lodges an acceptable bid.

It is reported that both Arsenal and Aston Villa are keeping a close eye on the £19.8m-rated Argentinian ahead of a potential summer move, while a major European side are also believed to have enquired about the former Getafe man last week, with Norwich thought to be demanding a fee of around £40m in order to part with the midfielder.

Fans will be gutted

Having just earned promotion back to the Premier League, the news that Norwich could be set to lose Buendia this summer is likely to come as gutting news for fans of the club, as the 24-year-old has been a crucial part of Daniel Farke’s side for the past three seasons – scoring 24 goals and providing a whopping 42 assists over his 121 appearances for the club.

Indeed, the midfielder was pivotal in Norwich’s Championship-winning campaign this term, scoring 15 goals, registering 16 assists and creating 18 big chances over his 39 league appearances, as well as averaging a SofaScore match rating of 7.68 – ranking him as the club’s best performer in the second tier.

As such, regardless of the large fee that the club would bring in through his sale, losing a player with both the goalscoring and creative ability of Buendia this summer will undoubtedly put a huge dent in the Canaries’ chances of retaining their status as a top-flight team come the end of next season.

Having said that, if the player truly has his heart set on a move away from Carrow Road this summer, then perhaps it could be worth City cashing in on the 24-year-old in the upcoming market, as, if he doesn’t give his all for the side next season, the club could see his value decrease, as well as running the risk of suffering relegation anyway.

Either way, should Buenida indeed go on to secure a move away from the club this summer, it will be a sad day for Norwich City fans.
