Ganguly fends off bouncers

Sourav Ganguly doesn’t enjoy a big reputation against short-pitched deliveries, but the India captain was forced to fend off a few testing balls off the field of play here yesterday. To his disappointment, the India players were stopped by a high-ranking local administrator when they attempted to take part in a light fielding session at the Antigua Recreation Ground just after midday."It’s difficult when you don’t get to practise on the Test match ground before the day’s play. That’s how it goes," Ganguly told reporters when asked if he was disappointed about the move taken by the Antigua Cricket Association official who threatened to call in police."We would have loved to practise, but if that’s the way their rule is, it is the same for both teams."With those opening remarks out of the way, Ganguly was given two bouncers. One stemmed from remarks in the Indian parliament that he was among a group of cricketers who had defaulted on taxes."They make so much money. I can’t remember all these things," Ganguly responded when asked if those charges could have a negative effect on his men at a critical stage of the Cable & Wireless series which is locked at 1-1 ahead of the fourth Test starting here today. The other bouncer Ganguly was forced to fend off surrounded comments he made on the quality of umpiring in the third Test at Kensington Oval.Under the International Cricket Council’s Code of Conduct, players and team officials are not allowed to publicly comment on the performance of umpires. But Ganguly, in a newspaper column in the Hindustan Times, said mistakes made by the TV replay umpire were unacceptable."One can understand mistakes made by the umpires in the middle, because they have a fraction of a second to decide, but not when you have 50 replays for something that was so obvious," the India captain wrote.Asked if he reckoned he could face a fine from the authorities for his actions, Ganguly said: "I didn’t comment on anything."A few minutes earlier, he told reporters: "I don’t want to stress on it. Everybody makes mistakes, but I hope it doesn’t happen again."

Palmer says Leeds won’t accept less than £30m for Raphinha

Carlton Palmer has told The Transfer Tavern that he doesn’t think that Leeds wouldn’t sell Raphinha for anything less than £30m.

The Brazilian winger enjoyed an impressive first campaign in the Premier League and has been attracting interest from Manchester United and Liverpool, who’ll both be trying to close the gap on Manchester City next season.

Raphinha scored six times and chipped in with nine assists as Leeds marked their first season back in the top-flight by finishing 9th, with the former Rennes attacker a key part of the recent success under Marcelo Bielsa.

He has still has four years remaining on the long-term deal he signed 12 months ago, meaning either of the North West sides would have to dig into their pockets to be able to prize Raphinha away from Elland Road this summer.

And whilst he’s only valued at £22.5m by Transfermarket, Palmer exclusively told The Transfer Tavern that the 24-year-old is worth plenty more in the current market:

“I certainly don’t think Leeds would entertain an offer for him less than £30m the way the Premier League is at the moment.”

Bielsa’s men will be looking to build on their top-half finish by mounting a challenge for the European places next season, but will need to keep all of their best players, so they’ll be hoping the Brazilian’s head doesn’t get turned should either Liverpool or United come calling.

Astle innings pointed the way for New Zealand batsmen

Expect a better performance from New Zealand’s batsmen in the second National Bank Test with England after the lift they got from Nathan Astle’s display on the last day in Christchurch

Lynn McConnell19-Mar-2002Expect a better performance from New Zealand’s batsmen in the second National Bank Test with England after the lift they got from Nathan Astle’s display on the last day in Christchurch. That’s Craig McMillan’s feeling going into the Wellington match at the Basin Reserve, a ground that has been good for him in the past.”The knock that Nathan played was great.”It gave other guys a lift, some confidence after two or three pretty tough days where we had been behind the eight ball for most of the game after that first over that Cairnsy (Chris Cairns) bowled.”You could just see perhaps a little momentum that hopefully we can show on Thursday,” he said. The onus was on the more experienced players to lead the way, especially now that the firepower of Cairns had been lost. The senior batsmen in the side had failed to score enough runs in the first innings and had not achieved any of the game’s disciplines well enough, or for long enough, he said.”It’s a big game and it is going to take a big effort from everyone.”I love playing here, I’ve had some really good innings here and Hamilton are my two favourite grounds in terms of runs scored, I’ve had two of my Test hundreds here.”It’s a cricket ground, I enjoy the atmosphere, the people come in to watch us, it’s a good place to play cricket,” he said.In contrast to his home ground at Jade Stadium, he expected more people to turn out to watch the match.”The crowd was hugely disappointing in Christchurch. I was also disappointed with the one-day crowd. It is a rugby town.”But it disappoints me they don’t come out to watch especially when there are four or five Canterbury players in the side.”And after the success we’ve had all summer you wouldn’t think there would be many more reasons to come out and watch us.””In the end we didn’t play well so people may say that justified not coming to watch but in saying that they missed what from the first over to the last over was an enthralling Test match.”I’m sure those who did go along thoroughly enjoyed it.”I was disappointed as were most of the other guys.”Of the bowlers they had been up against there was respect for Matthew Hoggard who had shown he could be dangerous when the ball was swinging.”We played him better when it wasn’t swinging around and if it doesn’t continue to swing we will continue to play him well.”Take nothing away from him, he bowled well and to get seven wickets is a great achievement.”Hopefully if it does swing then the guys have made the necessary adjustments. You need to be a little more patient and a little more selective because all he really did was bowl in that channel.”He didn’t give us a lot to hit but because of the pressure they built by bowling dot balls, he didn’t go searching then we went searching and that was the difference.”When we bowled, we went searching and they didn’t have to go looking because we were serving it up to them and that is probably shown in the number of boundaries hit, especially in that partnership between (Andrew) Flintoff and (Graham) Thorpe.”We’ve got two days to turn it around.”It came back to basics and if you didn’t do them well then any side could knock you over”It starts in the nets here and that is what the guys have been trying to focus on.”If they can’t do in the nets then they are not going to do it out in the middle,” he said.

Ball claims Everton need long-term manager - Exclusive

Michael Ball insists that Everton need to appoint a manager who is in it for the long haul amid their chaotic hunt for a new boss.

The Toffees have yet to appoint a replacement for Carlo Ancelotti, who has left to join Real Madrid.

They have been linked with a number of new managers, notably the former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez.

However, a report from talkSPORT earlier this week suggested that talks had quietened down amid a serious backlash from fans.

Duncan Ferguson remains Ball’s preferred choice to take the role at Goodison Park but he is insistent that whomever it may be that takes the reins, they need to ensure that they can stay with the club for the next five years.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, Ball said: “We need a manager who is going to be at the football club for the next three, four, five years minimum, to improve us year on year.

“We know it’s not going to be a quick fix in every summer window, so I feel Duncan or a young manager who is going to be here for the future of Everton football club is the one that Moshiri needs to start looking at.”

In addition to Benitez, Everton have also been linked with a potential move to appoint the former Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo.

NUFC takeover update involving Staveley

Lee Ryder has dropped some promising insight from those close to Amanda Staveley on the potential takeover of Newcastle United.

The Lowdown: Arbitration set

An arbitration case between the Premier League and the St. James’ Park faithful has been set for July over the failed deal between Mike Ashley and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) group.

Despite the top flight taking the original decision to fail the bid, there is still a chance that the takeover can be revived, if results of the arbitration hearing go in the way of the North East club.

The Latest: Takeover insight

In response to a fan of the Tyneside club in a Q&A session, which has since been transcribed by The Chronicle, football journalist Ryder has shared that those close to Amanda Staveley, who is a member of the original KSA consortium, are saying that they are still interested in a return back to the negotiating table if the top flight are forced to reverse things.

This decision could well be made as a result of the arbitration case, should it go in the favour of the Magpies.

The Verdict: Promising words

It is certainly promising to hear that Staveley and co would consider coming back to the table, as it shows that the deal is not dead in the water despite it originally being failed by the Premier League.

In light of this insight, a positive result for the Toon in the arbitration hearing could well bring the potential revival of the takeover a step closer, so long as the consortium are true to their words and do wish to come back into talks.

However, the top flight will be equally as confident that the results will go their way instead, and so nothing is guaranteed at this point.

Nonetheless, with the separate anti-competition claim launched by Ashley as well, NUFC are still very clearly pushing for this takeover to go through, with arbitration set to paint a clearer picture over the direction over which it is heading.

Sri Lanka ponder selectors' wisdom as batting fails

Charlie Austin28-Jul-2002Sri Lanka’s controversial decision to field an under-strength side in this ACL Cables Second Test against Bangladesh proved costly as the tourists produced their most disciplined performance of the series, restricting the hosts to 301 for eight at the close. It’s too early to say whether Sri Lanka will be forced to rue their decision to rest nine established players for this game, but on the basis of Bangladesh’s efforts in the field today, they will think twice before making such wholesale changes in future.Certainly Sanath Jayasuriya, who had voiced his unhappiness with the controversial omission of key players last week, wants Bangladesh to be taken more seriously in the future."They showed us today that they cannot be taken lightly," he said after the close. "They bowled really well – both the fast bowlers who showed good direction and the spinners who did an excellent job in the afternoon."Nevertheless, Jayasuriya was not best pleased with the performance of his batsmen: "It was really disappointing that the batsmen got themselves out after getting well set. We can’t afford that – when someone gets settled they have to go on and play a long innings."At one stage, it looked like Sri Lanka would finish the day with control, but they lost four wickets in the last hour, gifting Bangladesh the moral advantage. Jayasuriya was annoyed: "We lost too many wickets in the later stages – we should have been 301 for five at the close."Sri Lanka had started the day well enough – albeit cautiously after being sent into bat on a pitch that’s notoriously lively (by sub-continental standards) during the first morning of a Test – losing only Jehan Mubarak (24), 21, one of three debutantes for the home side, before lunch. But immediately after the break they started to encounter more problems, as Bangladesh captain Khaled Mashud threw the ball to his spinners. The left-handed Naveed Nawaz, another winning his first cap, was caught behind for 21 two balls after the resumption whilst attempting a square cut.Michael Vandort, particularly impressive off the front foot, then added 41 with fellow left-hander Hashan Tillakaratne (18), reaching his first Test fifty in the process, before two wickets in two overs left Sri Lanka reeling on 133 for four.Vandort was trapped lbw for 61 by a leg-break from Alok Kapali that skidded onto his pads, whilst Tillakaratne, who had been rested in the first game, offered off-spinner Fahim Muntasir a simple return catch.Jayasuriya and Thilan Samaraweera, axed from the Test side in England despite averaging 87.17 in his first nine matches, were then forced to consolidate. Both Muntasir and Kapali bowled frugal spells and had Samaraweera been snapped up at mid-wicket when he had made just 10, Sri Lanka could have been in even deeper trouble. But, gradually, Jayasuriya started to assert his authority, using the tea interval as an opportunity to raise the tempo. After the break he scored at a run a ball, galloping past his fifty on towards his 11 Test century. However, with the Bangladesh fielding becoming increasingly ragged, left-armer Monjural Islam conjured up a perfect outswinger to end the 127 run partnership.Wicket-keeper Prasanna Jayawardene, anxious to prove that he can contribute with bat as well as with his deft glovework, feathered a catch behind in the same over.Samaraweera, displaying characteristic obduracy, inched pass his fifty, the fourth of his short career, as Upul Chandana (20) provided Bangladesh with further reason to cheer when he drove straight into the hands of extra cover. Then, just moments before the close, Islam, the pick of the Bangladeshi seamers, claiming three for 35 from 17 overs, induced a rare moment of indiscretion from Samaraweera, as the right-hander slashed into the hands of first slip.Bangladesh may well have lost their last five Tests by an innings, as well as 11 of the 12 that they have played, but the absence of Muttiah Muralitharan now means that they do now have an opportunity to press for their first Test victory.

Edouard considering Celtic stay

Heading into the ongoing transfer window, it looked a rather bleak situation for Celtic.

The Hoops didn’t have a permanent first-team manager until last week while Parkhead was faced with a number of senior departures.

What’s the word?

After appointing Ange Postecoglou as their new boss, the future of Celtic football club looks a little more vibrant.

The Australian has already welcomed two new players to the club in Liaw Shaw and Joey Dawson but he now needs to crack on with first-team recruitment.

A move for Sunderland forward Charlie Wyke appears to be in the pipeline but he might not need to replace Odsonne Edouard.

That’s because Leicester’s apparent £15m deal to sign the Frenchman is falling through after a disagreement in fee led to the Foxes turning their attention to RB Salzburg attacker Patson Daka.

As a result, Edouard is weighing up his options and according to The Daily Mail, is considering staying at Celtic this season and seeing out the rest of his contract.

Huge boost

This might not be a welcome sight for Celtic’s finances but in terms of their chances next term, it represents a colossal boost for Postecoglou’s chances.

The 55-year-old has walked into a mess at Paradise but if Edouard remains in Glasgow, it will give the new manager a huge helping hand in their bid to overthrow Rangers.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-celtic-transfer-news-posetcoglou-ryan-delap-wyke” title= “Read the latest Celtic transfer news!”]

Towards the end of last season, it looked as though the Frenchman had downed tools. He was a shadow of his former self and ended 2020/21 with just three goals in his last ten matches.

Those initially looked to be his final outings in the famous green and white hoops but a stay would do Celtic the world of good.

After all, the 23-year-old has been the club’s top scorer for a number of years now.

His form in front of goal led the club to consecutive title wins in 2017/18, 2018/19 and 2019/20 while despite Celtic’s shoddy form of late, he still racked up 22 strikes last term.

Edouard is one of the greatest strikers Celtic have had in the modern era, something a tally of 83 goals in 168 matches testifies.

A bustling ball of energy, there are very few defences in Scotland capable of stopping him.

If Celtic did receive a fee for him this summer then it’s likely they will have spent that on funding a replacement. As such, they aren’t particularly losing out on much.

This feels like a win-win situation for the Bhoys. Postecoglou will be over the moon if he gets a chance to utilise his talents.
