Chapple shines as Lancashire dominate against Somerset

Glen Chapple bustled out Somerset’s middle-order to take 6-46 as Lancashireenjoyed the better of exchanges after winning the toss on a cold, but clearopening day at Taunton.Having bowled out the home side for a modest 204, the visitors replied with114-3, losing Mark Chilton to the final delivery of the day for a solid 53.That full-length ball from Richard Johnson, which smashed Chilton full onthe boot, gave the former Middlesex seamer his second Somerset wicket andbacked up the county’s hopes that he can fill tbe centrally contracted AndyCaddick’s boots this season.Johnson ended the day with 2-36 from 13.5 overs. His efforts, allied tothose of Championship debutant Joe Tucker, Steffan Jones and Graham Rose, suggested it will be no easy ride for Lancashire to establish a commandingfirst innings advantage on a pitch offering the pace bowlers plenty ofencouragement.Chapple exploited it perfectly with good variation of pace and perfectlength to take 5-28 from 7.5 overs after lunch, bowling from the River End.Skipper Jamie Cox had earlier done his best to guide Somerset out oftrouble, driving exquisitely both straight and through the covers, to make66 in confident style. But once he departed to leave the total 120-4 Chapple ripped into top gearand soon the scoreboard read 158-8. Somerset were then indebted to some lateorder belligerence from Johnson and Steffan Jones to scramble them to asolitary batting point.Ryan Driver and John Crawley both fell cheaply, despite a cautious approach, when Lancashire replied, while Chilton needed a life on 17, dropped by KeithDutch diving to his right at third slip off Jones. The opener profited toreach his half-century off 114 balls, with 10 fours.

Rangers fans react to Dick Advocaat video

Many Glasgow Rangers fans have been wishing former manager Dick Advocaat well as he oversaw his last game as a manager before retiring on Sunday.

The 73-year-old spent three years in charge at Ibrox between 1998 and 2001 and had plenty of success with the 55-time Scottish champions. Under his stewardship, Rangers won the league twice, the Scottish Cup twice and the Scottish League Cup once. The Gers had some wonderful players during his time there, such as Ronald de Boer and Giovanni van Bronckhorst, and they were generally a joy to watch.

A few years later, he masterminded Zenit St Peterburg’s 2-0 triumph over the Gers in the UEFA Cup final in Manchester.

The Dutchman’s career has seen him manage all over the globe and his 41-year career in the dugout finally came to an end on Sunday – he went out on a high as Feyenoord beat Utrecht 2-0. A video has emerged of him getting emotional during the match, and that played on the heartstrings of many Gers supporters.

The clip was shared on Twitter by @FootballOranje_, and it attracted plenty of attention from the Gers fans. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts, with some dubbing Advocaat an Ibrox “legend”.

Norwich resigned to losing Buendia

Daniel Farke and Norwich City are resigned to losing the services of Emi Buendia this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by David Ornstein for The Athletic, who claims that the Canaries have acknowledged that the time is right for the 24-year-old to take the next step in his career, and will not stand in the way of the attacking midfielder’s exit if a club lodges an acceptable bid.

It is reported that both Arsenal and Aston Villa are keeping a close eye on the £19.8m-rated Argentinian ahead of a potential summer move, while a major European side are also believed to have enquired about the former Getafe man last week, with Norwich thought to be demanding a fee of around £40m in order to part with the midfielder.

Fans will be gutted

Having just earned promotion back to the Premier League, the news that Norwich could be set to lose Buendia this summer is likely to come as gutting news for fans of the club, as the 24-year-old has been a crucial part of Daniel Farke’s side for the past three seasons – scoring 24 goals and providing a whopping 42 assists over his 121 appearances for the club.

Indeed, the midfielder was pivotal in Norwich’s Championship-winning campaign this term, scoring 15 goals, registering 16 assists and creating 18 big chances over his 39 league appearances, as well as averaging a SofaScore match rating of 7.68 – ranking him as the club’s best performer in the second tier.

As such, regardless of the large fee that the club would bring in through his sale, losing a player with both the goalscoring and creative ability of Buendia this summer will undoubtedly put a huge dent in the Canaries’ chances of retaining their status as a top-flight team come the end of next season.

Having said that, if the player truly has his heart set on a move away from Carrow Road this summer, then perhaps it could be worth City cashing in on the 24-year-old in the upcoming market, as, if he doesn’t give his all for the side next season, the club could see his value decrease, as well as running the risk of suffering relegation anyway.

Either way, should Buenida indeed go on to secure a move away from the club this summer, it will be a sad day for Norwich City fans.

Forest dealt Lyle Taylor transfer blow

Nottingham Forest have been dealt a blow in their bid to seal Lyle Taylor’s departure from The City Ground this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Stoke on Trent Live, who claim that Michael O’Neill’s Stoke City side are not believed to be considering a move for the 31-year-old Forest centre-forward in the current transfer window.

It was reported earlier this month that Chris Hughton is more than happy for Taylor to leave the club this summer, with the 62-year-old looking to bring in a striker of his own in a bid to provide Lewis Grabban with competition for his starting spot ahead of next season.

Hughton will be fuming

Things have not exactly gone swimmingly for Taylor since arriving at The City Ground on a free transfer last summer, with the manager who signed him, Sabri Lamouchi, being sacked after just four games of the season, and his successor, Chris Hughton, clearly not holding a great deal of faith in the striker’s ability.

Indeed, despite playing a total of 39 Championship games for Forest last term, only 15 of these appearances came as starts, with the £900k-rated forward going on to score just four goals, register no assists and create one big chance for his teammates, in addition to hitting the target an average of 0.4 times and making of 0.4 key passes per game.

These returns saw the £5k-per-week man earn a disappointing seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.64, ranking him as the Garibaldi’s joint ninth-worst performer in the second tier last season.

As such, it is unsurprising that Hughton is willing to allow the man whom Neal Ardley dubbed an “outstanding” player to move onto pastures new this summer, and also why O’Neill clearly believes that there could be better options to improve his attacking arsenal at Stoke City ahead of next season.

However, the fact that the Potters do not appear likely to make a move for Taylor at present will undoubtedly leave the Forest boss fuming, as he will now have to find another potential suitor who is willing to take the forward on this summer.

Sanchez backs West Brom for promotion

West Brom have either been promoted or relegated 10 times in the previous 20 seasons, and former Premier League manager Lawrie Sanchez has predicted that remarkable run to continue next term.

Half of those have been promotions, but now three of them have been immediately followed by relegation.

The Baggies fate this time was sealed following their 3-1 defeat at Arsenal last month, ending Sam Allardyce’s proud record of never going down as a manager.

West Brom enjoyed a mini revival during April, including one of the shock results of the season at Chelsea, but it only delayed the inevitable, which came at the Emirates on May 9.

Allardyce won’t be in charge this season having announced following the defeat to former side West Ham that he’ll be leaving The Hawthorns.

Chris Wilder, who got Sheffield United out of the Championship in 2018-2019, is the favourite to replace him, but Sanchez believes that regardless of who the Baggies appoint, they’re well equipped to bounce back at the first time of asking.

He exclusively told Football FanCast:

“They’re a yo-yo club, West Brom. They are certainly a better club than Norwich in they’ve had more yo-yo payments and therefore the finances are probably in a better situation.

“They’ve got new owners, who will be wanting to get back to the Premier League, so I think that is set-up for them to come straight back up.”

Shine reflects on Bath Festival

Regarding Peter Bowler’s innings he said: “it’s the best I’ve seen him play in one-day cricket

Richard Walsh18-Jun-2001After seeing his side beat Yorkshire Phoenix at Bath, Somerset Coach, Kevin Shine, described the catch taken by Keith Dutch as: “the best catch that I have ever seen, it could be the one moment that could change the season for us.”Regarding Peter Bowler’s innings he said: “it’s the best I’ve seen him play in one-day cricket. With an average of 47 in the CricInfo Championship, he’s in the zone at the moment .”The coach was also full of praise for Mark Lathwell, who after being unbeaten on 98 in the Championship match hit a cameo 27 on Sunday. “‘Lathers’ was a pleasure to watch out there,” he said. “He was really up for it today and hit every bad ball.”As far as the coach was concerned “the best thing that came out of the BathFestival was that we scored runs.”

Crawley breaks records, as Hampshire save follow on

In 1959 a cricketer by the name of Denis Baldry hit 151 in his debut innings for Hampshire, having joined them from Middlesex

Vic Isaacs21-Apr-2002In 1959 a cricketer by the name of Denis Baldry hit 151 in his debut innings for Hampshire, having joined them from Middlesex. Today, that score was surpassed, and could even be increased tomorrow. John Crawley treated the good Canterbury crowd to an innings that was a masterclass in batting.223 not out overnight, Hampshire’s acquisition from Lancashire batted superbly against all that Kent could throw at him.Starting the day on 136-2, the visiting side still had to get 292 more runs to avoid the follow on, and soon lost Robin Smith at 178. He left a ball from Khan alone that came in on him and he was palpably lbw.Zimbabwean Neil Johnson then joined Crawley for a scintillating partnership of 232. Johnson hit 21 fours in his 226-ball innings before edging Fleming to slip. It was a superb innings in its own right with some powerful drives and cuts.Nic Pothas, Hampshire’s second debutant of the match then played his part in an unbeaten partnership of 80, but the day belonged to Crawley.Crawley became the fourth Hampshire player to score a century on debut, following Cecil Abercrombie the Scottish rugby international in 1913, Denis Baldry in 1959 and Richard Hayward who scored his debut hundred against the Sri Lankans at Bournemouth on the same day as the famous wedding of Prince Charles and Diane.John was naturally delighted with his performance today, “I could not have had a better start” he told this correspondent. “It was a good wicket, but we started the day still needing to score a hugh total, so it was tough. The whole day wasn’t just about me; Neil batted superbly and was a great support. Having achieved our aim as well as this innings it has to be a very satisfying day”. For Hampshire supporters and fans, Crawley has done a fair bit to become a local lad in just his first knock.
