Two Newcastle transfers may be immiennt

Newcastle United are ‘likely’ to sign two players this week, according to The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards.

The lowdown

Last weekend, Newcastle played host to relegation rivals Watford, who sit just above the bottom three. The Magpies took the lead through Allan Saint-Maximin, only for Joao Pedro to snatch a point for the Hornets three minutes from time.

The draw leaves Eddie Howe’s men 19th in the table with just one win and 12 points from their first 20 matches.

Their next match sees them travel to 15th-placed Leeds United on Saturday, with the Whites putting daylight between themselves and the danger zone with back-to-back wins in the league, so it’s fair to say that the pressure is on for the Magpies.

The latest

Edwards took to Twitter on Tuesday morning to write that Sevilla centre-back Diego Carlos is ‘edging closer’ to joining, and while his arrival is yet to be confirmed, senior club officials have been hard at  work trying to bolster the squad before the weekend trip to Elland Road.

The journalist is currently unsure about the identity of the second player who’s likely to join, as he tweeted: “Diego Carlos is edging closer to a #nufc move but still not confirmed yet. Told senior club officials have been working round the clock to secure targets and boost squad before Leeds. They have encountered resistance at every turn but 2 players (I can’t get other name) are likely”.

The verdict

Carlos’ impending arrival should be a significant boost given the Magpies’ defensive struggles. They have the worst record for expected goals against in the Premier League, but the hope will be that the 2019/20 Europa League winner with Sevilla shores them up at the back.

Who could the mystery second man be? Perhaps it’s Atalanta striker Duvan Zapata, for whom Newcastle have reportedly made an offer, and the Colombian marksman is believed to be open to joining.

If the Magpies agree to meet Atalanta’s €45m (£37.6m) asking price, that may be a deal they can get done in the next five days.

How T20s became a serious business for Australia

Twenty20 began as a giggle for Australia, who treated it as a third-rate concept and preferred to save their focus for Tests and ODIs

Twenty20 began as a giggle for Australia, who treated it as a third-rate concept and preferred to save their focus for Tests and ODIs. It was an approach that resulted in them quickly becoming also-rans in the format, something that hurt them more than they expected. Eventually the lack of results forced a regeneration that has led to Michael Clarke’s men making the World Twenty20 final against England in Barbados on Sunday.A gimmicky new format
17 February, 2005
New Zealand and Australia turned up to a retro costume party to christen the new fad in Auckland and Ricky Ponting summed up the affair. “I think it is difficult to play seriously,” he said. Ponting was the star with 98 off 55 balls, including five sixes, but never matched the performance again, or warmed to the style of play.In modern terms he was a traditionalist, like most of his team-mates at the time, and Twenty20 was a popular gimmick. Still, Australia have beaten their initial total of 214 only once since then and Ponting wasn’t totally dismissive of the concept. “If it does become an international game then I’m sure the novelty won’t be there all the time.”Heading south at Southampton
13 June, 2005
Australia didn’t realise it then, but the start of their Ashes defeat began at Southampton during the second Twenty20 international. They scored only 79 after being 31 for 7, and misread the mood of England. Damien Martyn outlined the outlook of the coach John Buchanan, who was focussing instead on the opening Test.”Buck was saying: ‘It’s only a muck-around game, don’t worry about it’,” Martyn said. “We trained for four hours on the morning. So we went from the nets next door, busting a gut, into a T20 game where they rolled up playing it like a Test match and flogged us.”Ricky Ponting wonders where it all went wrong in the 2009 World Twenty20•Getty Images

A World Cup isn’t a big deal
September 2007
A global trophy was crafted quickly for the shortest game, but Adam Gilchrist and his team-mates were more concerned with the upcoming tour of India than the matches in South Africa. “It was no secret that our attitude to Twenty20 cricket was undeveloped,” Gilchrist wrote in his autobiography. “As a group, we didn’t think this tournament was that big a deal.”An opening loss to Zimbabwe embarrassed them and they recovered to reach the semi-final, when they were knocked out by India. “It dawned on us that maybe Twenty20 would be the big revolution that some were predicting,” Gilchrist wrote. Not winning a global tournament changed their thinking a little, but it was still more novelty than necessary.First-round losers
6-8 June, 2009
It took three days and two defeats for Australia to drop from the 2009 World Twenty20, delivering more red faces and leaving them unranked for this year’s event. Once again it was the first lapse on a trip that ended in Ashes defeat. “I’d like to be able to tell you that I knew what was going wrong,” Ponting said after losing to Sri Lanka and exiting the tournament.Australia had started to pick some specialists, but didn’t have the batting fire power or bowling nous to counter West Indies or Kumar Sangakkara’s outfit. Ponting had joked the side wouldn’t lose its final group match because it would mean having to spend two weeks in Leicester. It wasn’t so funny when it happened. At that point Australia had lost five Twenty20 internationals in a row and Ponting was soon announcing his retirement from the format.Twenty20 has provided a career highlight for Michael Hussey•Getty Images

Team overhaul
16 October, 2009
Michael Clarke became the full-time captain and Cameron White, a bits-and-pieces player until now, was a surprise choice as his deputy. After years of trying to mix a couple of specialists with the Test and ODI stars, the Australian selectors show they are serious about putting together a side made for Twenty20.”We’ve got a young and enthusiastic group, but we must recognise that we’ve got a lot of work to do in Twenty20 cricket and our recent form hasn’t been good,” Clarke said. “Naturally, we’ll target the World Twenty20 in the Caribbean next year and I feel we have plenty of talent to genuinely mount a challenge in that tournament.” It sounded more like hopeful PR talk at the time.New team, old focus
May 2010
Following a warm-up loss to Zimbabwe, Australia were experiencing déjà vu. Even though the results hadn’t yet changed, the demeanour had. Clarke even said Twenty20 had “become exactly the same as one-day and Test cricket”. His men quickly displayed the same steel that has driven them in the other formats through most of the 2000s, and from the moment the tournament started they were a familiar foe to the rest of the world. In the aftermath of the unbelievable semi-final victory against Pakistan, which took their streak to six, Michael Hussey rated the winning feeling better than his 2006-07 Ashes moment in Adelaide. The comparisons may seem unreasonable to traditional cricket followers, but they prove the team is no longer treating Twenty20 like a toy.

Australia maintain unbeaten run

Australia’s women maintained their 100% record, and booked themselves a slot in the first semi-final in St Lucia on May 13, by seeing off West Indies by nine runs in a tight contest in Basseterre. There was little at stake except for pride, with both sides already assured of their progression to the last four, but it was Australia who finished the group stage the stronger, thanks to a disciplined allround display. After losing the toss and being asked to bat first, Australia posted a solid but unspectacular 133 for 7 in their 20 overs, with seven of their eight batsmen reaching double figures. The captain, Alex Blackwell, was the top-scorer with 28 from 26 balls, while Shanel Daley and Anisa Mohammed, with three wickets apiece, were the pick of the West Indies attack. In reply, West Indies suffered an early setback when Juliana Nero and Cordel Jack were both dismissed within three balls of one another (16 for 2), but Stafanie Taylor led the revival with an unbeaten 58 from 54 balls, adding 46 for the third wicket with Britney Cooper, who made 27.However, Australia’s bowlers held their nerve and kept their discipline, with Ellyse Perry claiming 2 for 19 in three overs to peg West Indies back in mid-innings. Her wickets included Deandra Dottin, who fell for her second first-ball duck in consecutive matches, having launched the tournament with a 38-ball century.

Spurs’ own Hazard: Dejan Kulusevski

Tottenham Hotspur’s new signing Dejan Kulusevski could become a better version of one of Antonio Conte’s former stars…

January swoop

The Sweden international signed from Juventus on deadline day, joining in an 18-month initial loan for an £8.3m fee, which has an option to buy set around £29.2m, as per the BBC.

He arrives in north London alongside fellow teammate Rodrigo Bentancur, who joins in a £15.9m permanent deal, which could rise by £5m before the end of his contract in 2026.

The pair would be Spurs’ only two arrivals this winter.

Shades of Eden Hazard

Kulusevski is hardly the sort of player that the Lilywhites were crying out for but he’s still a very exciting young talent who will offer Conte supreme versatility in the final third.

It’s that sort of ‘plug-and-play’ style that the Italian loves to have at his disposal – as we’ve already seen, he considers Steven Bergwijn to be a back-up option to Harry Kane up top, whilst there could be some similarities to Eden Hazard, an out-and-out winger who thrived in the half-spaces as one of two no.10s.

The 21-year-old is certainly capable of playing both roles as displayed during his maiden campaign at the Old Lady. Kulusevski was deployed in as many as seven different positions and he still provided 14 direct goal contributions across all competitions, which is remarkable for his age at a club of Juve’s stature.

Perhaps what is more astonishing was the way in which he dropped down the pecking order under Massimiliano Allegri but his loss is certainly Spurs’ gain.

“He has incredible physical strength. He reminds me of a young [Mo] Salah for the way he shakes off opponents in the first ten metres,” once claimed Italian coach Pierpaolo Bisoli, whilst former Aston Villa and Sweden striker Marcus Allback dubbed Tottenham’s new man “explosive” and “direct” to The Sun.

According to  Italian Football expert Nima Tavallaey Roodsari, Kulusevski will become an “absolute monster” under the stewardship of Conte.

Hazard provided 34 goals and 21 assists in 94 appearances under the Conte at Stamford Bridge, and the 52-year-old will be hoping that the £27m-rated dynamo can be a similar sort of attacking threat at Spurs this season.

Given the way in which the Belgian has fallen off in his career and the age that Kulusevski has arrived in N17, the Lilywhites’ new man could well emerge as an even better talent than the former Chelsea star in the future.

Newcastle keen on Steven Bergwijn

An exciting update has emerged on Newcastle United and their interest in Tottenham forward Steven Bergwijn…

What’s the talk?

According to 90min journalist Graeme Bailey, the Magpies are keen on a deal to sign the Netherlands international this month if an opportunity presents itself. The attacker is not happy with his situation in north London and the Toon could swoop in to rescue his season.

He tweeted: “Newcastle United interested in Steven Bergwijn – if he is available. Ajax have also keen on potential loan – player would like more playing time, but it remains to be seen if Antonio Conte will let him out in January.”

This comes amid rumours of a move for Chris Wood, who the Toon are believed to be close to signing.

Newcastle’s next Kluivert

Eddie Howe could land his own Patrick Kluivert for Newcastle by signing another Dutch beast in the January transfer window.

Kluivert, a Champions League winner with Ajax, scored 13 goals in 37 games for the Magpies and found the back of the net five times in six UEFA Cup outings. He scored 122 goals in 257 matches for Barcelona and 40 in 79 caps for the Netherlands, highlighting the immense career he enjoyed, including a fine spell on Tyneside.

Bergwijn could come in and have a similar impact at St James’ Park if he is able to find his best form. He has produced just five goals and 10 assists in 64 games for Tottenham, but his form for PSV in the Netherlands was exceptional as he scored 31 goals and provided 41 assists in 149 matches in Eindhoven.

In the 2019/20 campaign, he managed 14 goals and 12 assists in the Eredivisie as he showed that he can score and create goals on a regular basis. If Howe can get him to reproduce that form with a move to Newcastle, he could then have a Kluivert of his own at St James’ Park and be able to call upon a player who is capable of winning vital points for the Magpies in the second half of the current campaign.

If Bergwijn is available on a loan deal, then it could be perfect for the Magpies as they would not be burdened by the prospect of paying his wages in the long-term if he flops or if they are relegated to the Championship. This means that it could be an ideal move for Newcastle which makes a lot of sense for all parties involved, and that is why Howe must work hard to ensure that the move gets over the line before the end of the month.

Phil Hay makes huge Kalvin Phillips claim

Leeds United’s hopes of keeping hold of midfielder Kalvin Phillips, and the identity of his next club if he does move on, will hinge on whether or not they avoid relegation, according to journalist Phil Hay.

The Lowdown: Phillips’ future up in the air

The 26-year-old has suffered a frustrating season for the Whites, not playing a single minute since December because of a serious hamstring injury.

Talk has intensified over Phillips’ future in recent months, with a host of clubs linked with signing him amid Leeds’ Premier League relegation battle. Aston Villa and West Ham have been two particularly prominent suitors of late.

Hay has now addressed where the England midfielder’s future is likely to lie, depending on what happens at Elland Road over the next two months.

The Latest: Hay on Kalvin Phillips

Writing in a Monday morning mailbag for The Athletic, the journalist admitted with regards to Phillips’ future that everything could depend on whether or not Leeds go down in May. He stated:

“If Leeds go down, all bets would be off. Players such as Phillips would need to find themselves Premier League clubs and would have to be open to whatever offers were on the table.

“But if Leeds stay up, and they’ve given themselves a huge chance of that by winning the last two games, I’d find it odd to see him go to Villa or West Ham United — two of the clubs linked with him recently.

“Phillips turns 27 this year and because of his age, doesn’t have an endless line of future big moves in him. Given his development and his progress at international level with England, the target for him, if he was to leave, would surely be relatively-secure Champions League football most seasons. Anything less would feel like him selling himself short. But we all know Villa have been on his case for a while.”

The Verdict: Perfect incentive to stay up

If ever Jesse Marsch and his players needed an incentive to stay up, it is this, with Phillips arguably the most important player in the current Leeds squad.

He has matured into a truly formidable midfielder – one who is England’s reigning Player of the Year – dominating midfield battles and averaging 2.3 tackles per game in the league this season.

Losing Phillips would be an almighty blow but it would be impossible to begrudge him a move if Leeds are back playing in the Championship, with the boyhood Whites fan already doing a stint in that division when he could have played at a higher level.

Gavaskar outlines IPL player retention method

In an email, a copy of which is with Cricinfo, Sunil Gavaskar said teams would have the choice of retaining up to seven players, but all the players would still be part of the auction

Nagraj Gollapudi and Tariq Engineer09-Jul-2010IPL governing council member and former Indian captain, Sunil Gavaskar, has suggested a new formula for player retention which envisages the eight original franchises retaining seven of their existing players provided the franchises are willing to bid up to $2 million for them though the player auction.According to Gavaskar, the teams would be able to nominate the players they wish to retain but all the players would be part of the auction, with a cap of $2 million per player. If the price of a player at the auction reached the $2 million limit, the player’s original franchise would have first right of refusal, provided it was one of the bidders. The BCCI empowered a three-man panel comprising Gavaskar, Ravi Shastri and Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi to make recommendations on the structure of the league. Gavaskar said the panel agreed that player retention will hurt Pune and Kochi, the two new franchises, but felt the council should abide by an earlier decision that teams could keep four Indian and three overseas players. The spending limit at the auction would be $8 million, which means the franchises would have to think carefully about players they want to retain. In addition, the total number of players in a squad would be capped at 25, with a restriction on matches a single player can play in order to reduce the risk of burnout. “Since a player could only play 14 matches plus the knockouts, a franchise could play five overseas players in four matches, but not in the knockout stage,” Gavaskar said in an email which was sent to the eight captains of the original franchises. The email was not sent to franchise officials or team owners. The details of IPL 2011 have been shrouded in mystery since the suspension of chairman Lalit Modi in April. The franchise owners had met with BCCI president Shashank Manohar and interim IPL chairman Chirayu Amin on June 24 to exchange their views on next year’s event, after which Pataudi, Shastri and Gavaskar had one-one-meetings with the franchise owners about player retention, salary caps and squad sizes. At the meeting, eight of the franchises voiced their opposition to player retention, while Mumbai and Chennai were in favour of keeping players.Gavaskar said these proposals were put to the full council at a meeting on June 25, but no decision was taken. The issue will now be brought up again at the next council meeting in August.

West Ham trying to negotiate Barbosa deal

Speaking to Give Me Sport, journalist Pete O’Rourke has shared some transfer news out of West Ham United involving Flamengo striker Gabriel Barbosa.

The Lowdown: Sky Sports break news…

Earlier this January, Sky Sports were the first to break news on West Ham’s attempts to sign Barbosa with reporter Dharmesh Sheth even claiming the player was eager on a move to England.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-updates/” title=”West Ham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Manager David Moyes has earmarked the signing of a striker as one of his transfer priorities before January 31, coming over a year after they sold club record signing Sebastien Haller to Ajax.

Jamaica international Michail Antonio, as things stand, remains Moyes’ only natural senior frontman with O’Rourke now sharing an update as they remain in negotiations for Barbosa.

The Latest: West Ham attempting negotiations…

According to his information, West Ham are currently attempting to negotiate a loan deal with the option to make his move permanent – but the Brazil striker’s club are holding firm.

“They’re still in and around Gabigol but the problem is Flamengo would prefer a straight-up sale for the Brazilian striker,” he said to GMS.

“West Ham are trying to negotiate a loan deal with an option to buy and so far Flamengo are not interested in that, so it’s a bit of a stalemate at the minute.”

The Verdict: Get it done?

The 25-year-old scored a phenomenal 29 goals over 2021 in all competitions, adding to his impressive career tally of 129, and we believe West Ham could be striking a prolific signing if they can agree a move.

As both clubs continue to lock horns in talks, concessions and compromises must be made as manager Moyes seeks to finally end his side’s long, drawn out search for an alternative frontman.

Former Premier League boss Alex McLeish believes Barbosa could be worth it, telling Football Insider the Brazilian has ‘ticks all the boxes’ to be a success in east London.

As the January deadline looms, the Irons and recruitment chief Rob Newman may have to speed up their discussions.

Em ambas partidas, o centroavante atuou no time reserva.
