JUAN PRÓXIMO DO ADEUS

Leeds suffer Conor Gallagher blow

Leeds United have reportedly shown interest in signing Chelsea youngster Conor Gallagher on loan, but he looks set to stay at Stamford Bridge.

The Lowdown: Several loans for Gallagher

The 21-year-old has found himself out on loan a number of times in his fledgling career in order to enjoy guaranteed playing time.

Gallagher has spent this season at West Brom, making 25 starts in the Premier League and chipping in with two goals and two assists apiece for the Baggies, whose relegation was confirmed on Sunday.

With his spell at The Hawthorns now coming to an end, the youngster will be looking to see what the next chapter in his career has in store.

The Latest: Leeds show Gallagher interest

According to journalist Alan Nixon on Twitter, Leeds are among several clubs who have expressed an interest in taking Gallagher on loan next season, with Crystal Palace and Newcastle United also mentioned as potential suitors.

However, it is stated that the midfielder now wants to fight for his place at Chelsea, aiming to catch the eye of manager Thomas Tuchel.

The Verdict: Look for more experience alternatives

Gallagher is clearly a talented young player, being hailed by his former boss Slaven Bilic as an “energetic” midfielder who “has a lot of everything” [football.london].

However, Leeds may be better looking for a slightly older midfielder, bringing them in permanently in order to settle.

Someone like 26-year-old reported transfer target Rodrigo de Paul would be perfect, in that respect, with the Udinese man scoring nine goals and registering eight assists in Serie A this season, shining in one of Europe’s biggest leagues.

Leeds need to be in a situation where they are signing players who are highly likely to instantly make the squad stronger – while Gallagher has definite potential, that wouldn’t be a given considering his tender age.

In other news, a pundit has been left baffled by one Leeds player’s lack of football this season. Find out who it is here.

Celtic should forget all about John Kennedy

When Neil Lennon decided to step down from his position as the manager of Celtic two months ago, it would have been a surprise to the Parkhead hierarchy.

Despite the Bhoys sitting 18 points adrift of top spot, they were still full of backing for the Northern Irishman. They weren’t ready to see him go and that’s been apparent in the fact that we’re still no closer to an announcement from the Hoops’ boardroom as to his long-term successor.

Nick Hammond has left the club in the meantime, while Dominic McKay has already started putting plans in place for next season. That said, the biggest capture of them all still escapes them.

With a number of issues to address before the summer window opens, Celtic need to get someone in place as soon as possible.

A number of coaches have been in the frame for the manager’s job, from Eddie Howe and Lucien Favre to Roy Keane.

If anyone is to finally be appointed, it shouldn’t be John Kennedy, someone the club are thinking of considering. He was given the keys to Celtic on an interim basis when Lennon left but, despite only losing one of his matches in charge – their defeat to Rangers in the Scottish Cup – he hasn’t covered himself in glory.

The Glaswegian outfit have only scored 12 goals in seven games, six of which came in one match against Livingston. Beyond that, they have been terrible in front of goal and have continued to be lacklustre at the back, somehow drawing 0-0 with Dundee United in the game which handed their crosstown rivals the Premiership title.

On that day, goalkeeper Benjamin Siegrist made an eye-catching haul of 12 saves. A similar eventuality befell Celtic last weekend.

As they were knocked out of the cup, Odsonne Edouard uncharacteristically missed from a few yards out before Moi Elyounoussi spurned a golden chance from inside the area as well. Edouard also missed a penalty with a rather poor effort from 12 yards out.

Kennedy has been unable to revive Celtic, and his substitutions and team selection leave plenty to be desired.

He is playing a number of first teamers who won’t even be at the club next season. Aberdeen-bound Scott Brown is still earning minutes while Diego Laxalt, Jonjoe Kenny and Elyounoussi – all on loan – have been regulars.

The 37-year-old has been devoid of inspiration and is failing to blood those who have a future at the club; you only need to look at Ismaila Soro’s lack of minutes for evidence in that department.

He has also been making some peculiar comments to the media, something the hot-headed Chris Sutton commented upon last week.

Speaking on the Record Celtic podcast after Kennedy claimed Celtic were still the best team in the country, Sutton said: “He could still say that Celtic have a good team that they can perform extremely well. But he said they are the best team in the country, that is a completely different thing to say, it’s a ridiculous thing to say.

“First of all it’s absolutely not true, everyone can see that and it’s slightly delusional to say that. It was just a really daft comment to make that Celtic are still the best team in the country when they have been annihilated this season.”

Kennedy has looked a forlorn figure on the sidelines in recent weeks and has nothing to show why he should be given the job. At least Keane has accomplished something in his managerial career; he was promoted to the Premier League with Sunderland in 2007.

At the moment, Dermot Desmond should pick anyone but their interim manager; it would only create an ever bigger mess.

Rob Lee says Saint-Maximin needs help

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Rob Lee, who made 333 appearances for Newcastle United, believes Allan Saint-Maximin needs more help from his teammates if he is to produce performances like his match-winning one against Burnley.

Saint-Maximin came off the bench against the Clarets in the second half with Newcastle trailing 1-0, and within six minutes he had got an assist and a goal to completely turn the match on its head.

His second goal was very typical of the Frenchman as he picked up the ball in his own half, before heading for goal and forcing both James Tarkowski and Ben Mee to back-pedal towards their own box before the winger fired low into the bottom corner.

Speaking ahead of the Toon’s clash with high-flying West Ham United on why Saint-Maximin needs help from his teammates if he is to become more consistent, and how injuries may always be his downfall, Lee told FFC:

“We do need to see consistency from him and it’s up to the other players to get him the ball more often when he is playing well, because usually when he’s playing well everything will go for him.

“All we need is for him to get his fitness up because he’s been struggling with niggling injuries all season because he’s so quick. I think he’ll be one of those players that struggle with injuries, especially hamstrings.”

This season has been an injury-plagued one for Saint-Maximin having picked up calf, groin and ankle injuries which has seen him miss 18 games for the Magpies.

When the £38,462 per week winger has been on the pitch he’s been a difference-maker with his willingness to get the ball moving forward having completed 51 of his 81 dribbles in the league.

Celtic: Seoane and Nsame their dream duo?

Celtic’s season has been a disastrous state of affairs at all reaches of the football club.

Whether it’s the Hoops hierarchy getting an earful from the Green Brigade or the playing staff dishonouring the famous Bhoys jersey with abject performances, it has not been a good campaign.

They’ve now also been missing a permanent manager in the Parkhead dugout for the best part of nine weeks.

It has been over two months since Neil Lennon departed Glasgow but the club still isn’t really any closer to welcoming a successor.

Eddie Howe has long been talked about and a deal is thought to be reaching a conclusion.

Though, if Dominic McKay and Dermot Desmond have an opportunity to change their minds and perform a U-turn, they should turn towards Young Boys coach Gerardo Seoane.

Football FanCast have already waxed lyrical about his qualities and why he’d be an ideal fit for the Bhoys.

For starters, he plays a very offensive brand of football. When the 42-year-old’s team won the Swiss top-flight in 2018/19, they scored a mighty haul of 99 goals, 28 more than any other side in the division.

They are one of the most vertical teams in Europe too, playing an average of 82.81 progressive passes per 90 minutes. This would be ideal for Celtic because the Glaswegian side average 85.05 per 90 themselves.

At a time where Celtic are in such a big transition, they will also need to find a manager that’s adept at working with young players. Fortunately, Seoane is an expert in this regard.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/celtic-manager-transfers-eddie-howe-jesse-marsch-ryan-christie-siriki-dembele” title=”Read the latest Celtic managerial updates, transfer news, rumours and gossip!”]

His Young Boys team is built around a collective group of players who are yet to reach their prime.

Seoane’s side possesses just three players over the age of 30 while six players in the squad are below the age of 23. Only five individuals are over the age of 25; typically the peak of a footballer’s career.

One of the stand out individuals for Young Boys down the years has been Jean-Pierre Nsame.

Coincidentally, he’s been linked with a move to Celtic in the last few days. He has netted 96 goals for the Swiss champions, 82 of which have been scored under Seoane’s watch.

Speaking about the striker earlier this season, his manager commented: “Jean-Pierre Nsamé has had an extraordinary season. He has really progressed especially in terms of taking responsibility in the team.”

Seoane added: “He is very physical, with an unbelievable ability in front of goal.”

Therefore, if McKay can lure the pairing to Paradise this summer, he’d potentially create a dream duo.

Seoane appears a perfect fit on the manager front while Nsame is a fearsome striker, someone who could replace Odsonne Edouard at Celtic if he finally departs.

Gerrard has big Patterson decision to make

Steven Gerrard will have a huge decision to make at Rangers in the coming weeks, as with Nathan Patterson continuing to excel at Ibrox, there may well be no place in the team for talismanic captain James Tavernier, who recently made his return from injury.

The 29-year-old was back on the bench as Rangers beat their Old Firm rivals 2-0 in the Scottish Cup on Sunday but could only watch on as his teenage teammate produced another exceptional display in what was his first start in the derby.

Tavernier has been sidelined since February through injury, which has allowed Patterson to establish himself as the first-choice right-back in Gerrard’s side, as he has now made 13 appearances in all competitions this season, also contributing goals against Royal Antwerp and Cove Rangers.

During Premier Sports’ coverage of the game on Sunday, pundit David Weir was full of praise for the young defender after a rampant first half in which he regularly got past Celtic left-back Diego Laxalt, suggesting that he was having an “outstanding” game and was “playing with no fear”.

The Athletic’s Rangers correspondent Jordan Campbell was also complimentary of his performance after the game, saying:

“Nathan Patterson was terrific again. A first Old Firm start can be daunting but he played with such confidence and authority.”

Therefore, you could argue that Patterson’s recent displays mean that he should keep his place in the side, despite Tavernier being so instrumental in the title win this season.

Certainly, it is a nice headache for Gerrard to have and whilst it would be difficult to keep the club captain on the bench for upcoming fixtures, Patterson will surely want to keep his current form going, as he surely warrants a place in Scotland’s squad for the Euros this summer based on recent performances.

If we compare their average ratings in the league this season, then there is only one winner, as Tavernier’s incredible 7.76 average rating comfortably outscores Patterson’s 6.78 average, however, the 19-year-old is seemingly getting better with every game he plays and will be full of confidence at the moment.

Therefore, Gerrard has a big decision to make when it comes to deciding who to play at right-back in upcoming fixtures as both Patterson and Tavernier have been exceptional at times this season.

And, in other news… Rangers suffer huge blow to “phenomenal” gem, Gerrard will be devastated

Spence signing would be shades of Tavernier

Rangers have been linked with a summer move for Middlesbrough Djed Spence recently and if he were to join Steven Gerrard’s side ahead of next season it could be a repeat of the deal that saw James Tavernier make the move to Ibrox in 2015.

According to ESPN, Rangers are taking an interest in the young right-back ahead of the summer transfer window, with Everton and Wolves also reportedly keen.

Although he is relatively inexperienced, having made just 65 appearances in his Middlesbrough career thus far, the former Fulham youngster is clearly well thought of at the Teesside club and wouldn’t be a regular at a Championship club if he didn’t have a lot of talent.

The 20-year-old defender received a lot of praise from Boro boss Neil Warnock recently, and given his vast experience in the game, Ross Wilson would do well to take what he says seriously and try and bring Spence to Ibrox this summer.

The manager said last year that:

“If you look at one or two of the full-backs that are around now – the lad at Liverpool, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and the lad at Manchester United from Palace (Aaron Wan-Bissaka) – they are all the same type as Djed.

“He does have enormous ability, and when you’ve got ability like that it’s criminal if you don’t get to the very top. But as I said to him in that first couple of weeks, he’ll only have himself to blame if he doesn’t get to the very top.

“He has quite a few things to brush up on at the minute, and I’m sure he will try. He’s a very good trainer and works hard.”

Spence has continued to be a regular with Middlesbrough this season, making 37 appearances in total in England’s second tier.

If he were to join Rangers this summer, there would be a lot of similarities to the deal that saw Tavernier join from Wigan Athletic six years ago.

After all, Tavernier failed to make the grade at a Premier League club, Newcastle United, and made his name in the lower leagues, enjoying spells with Wigan, Bristol City and Rotherham United.

Although he showed brief glimpses of his attacking potential, notably in the 2013/14 season where he managed five goals and five assists for Rotherham, it was only when he arrived at Rangers when his attacking play reached a new level.

[freshpress-quiz id=“593776”]

Certainly, Spence looks to have a bright future in the game, and there’s no reason why he couldn’t go on to become a player of Tavernier’s quality should he join Gerrard’s side this summer.

Leeds: McCalmont set for second loan

Leeds United will look to loan out midfielder Alfie McCalmont at a higher level next season.

That’s according to a report from Football Insider, who have been informed by a Whites source of Marcelo Bielsa’s plans for the 21-year-old.

The report claims that Bielsa has made up his mind regarding McCalmont and wants the youngster to join a League One outfit to further his development.

McCalmont, a Northern Ireland international, has spent the current campaign out on loan with League Two side Oldham Athletic.

He’s made 38 appearances and has scored an impressive 10 times, while also chipping in with four assists, per Transfermarkt.

The midfielder’s winner against Exeter City back in March came in for praise from former England striker Michael Owen on social media, and it seems as if McCalmont will depart Elland Road again over the coming months.

Transfer Tavern take

To us, this is the correct decision from the Whites in order to get the best out of McCalmont in the long run.

He’s excelled in the fourth-tier, so the logical next step would be to see how he fares at a higher level.

The Whites don’t need to worry about losing McCalmont for nothing either, as his deal in Yorkshire still has over three years left to run.

Who knows, another impressive loan spell away from Elland Road next season could result in McCalmont putting himself in Bielsa’s thoughts for the 2022/23 campaign to challenge the likes of Kalvin Phillips, Mateusz Klich and co.

Ollie Younger must start for Sunderland

Sunderland will be looking to all but secure a League One play-off spot on Tuesday evening in their clash with fellow promotion hopefuls Blackpool.

Having been on an excellent run of form since the appointment of Lee Johnson back in December, with the 39-year-old guiding the Black Cats to a run of 16 league games without suffering a single defeat between January and April, things have taken a turn for the worse in recent weeks at the Stadium of Light.

Over their last six League One fixtures, Johnson’s side have now picked up a shocking totla of just three points, losing to Charlton Athletic, Wigan Athletic and Blackpool, as well as drawing with Peterborough United, Hull City and Accrington Stanley – with the club conceding a whopping 11 goals in this run.

The Black Cats’ leaky defence has coincided with the loss of the Wolverhampton Wanderers loanee centre-back, Dion Sanderson, to a back injury, and the versatile central midfielder, Luke O’Nien, filling in at the centre of defence.

However, with the 26-year-old making a number of costly mistakes in recent weeks, as well as averaging a disappointing WhoScored match rating of just 6.3 over his last four appearances, it would be advisable for Johnson to move O’Nien out of the middle of his defence for Sunderland’s must-win clash with Blackpool on Tuesday.

As for his replacement, Oliver Younger would appear to be the ideal candidate to step in, as, while the 21-year-old does not have much first-team experience under his belt, the defender was impressive on his debut against Fleetwood Town in the EFL Trophy, as well as convincing Johnson that he was ready for a league start against Rochdale back in March.

And, despite Younger’s relative inexperience, his natural ability as a centre-back would likely benefit the structure of the Sunderland backline more than with O’Nien at its core.

Furthermore, considering O’Nien’s performances in recent weeks, there does not seem to be a great amount to lose in replacing the midfielder with the young defender, but there is very much plenty to be gained.
