Rangers Predicted XI vs Kilmarnock

Glasgow Rangers face Kilmarnock for the third time this season as the two old foes face off at Ibrox in the Scottish Premiership.

Rangers face the Rugby Park side at Govan today with Steven Gerrard looking for his side’s first win since the 1-0 win over St Johnstone after the 0-0 draw at Hamilton Academical.

Gerrard will be without Alfredo Morelos and Kemar Roofe for Saturday’s home meeting against Tommy Wright’s side. Both stars are out of the game at Ibrox after being banned by the Scottish FA for serious foul play, with the latter serving the first of a two-game suspension.

Other than that, however, they should be back to near full strength as Scott Arfield has made a full recovery from injury. The Canadian could be in contention to make his first start since the Boxing Day clash with Hibernian.

With that in mind, here is Football FanCast’s predicted line-up for Rangers to take on Kilmarnock this afternoon.

Allan McGregor is likely to keep his place in goal for Rangers when they host Killie on Saturday. The Gers No.1 goalkeeper has looked solid this season with Jon McLaughlin providing very little competition for his place.

Maybe Filip Helander could make way for Leon Balogun, but other than that the rest of the back four looks certain to stay the same as it was against Hamilton with Borna Barisic and Connor Goldson joined by club captain James Tavernier at right-back.

Balogun could be one of four changes made by Gerrard, who could lean on the expertise of Steven Davis and Ryan Jack at the expense of Bongani Zungu. The South African’s woes at Ibrox look set to continue after an error-strewn performance against the Accies.

Elsewhere, new recruit Scott Wright could come in for Ryan Kent to give the 24-year-old a break from duty. Kent has started 27 out of the past 28 Premiership fixtures which means Wright could make his first competitive start against Killie.

Gerrard is expected to stick with Cedric Itten despite Jermain Defoe returning to the fold. Itten started at New Douglas Park and is likely to get the nod again ahead of the veteran. This means that Joe Aribo could replace Ianis Hagi on the right-hand side of the attack, having provided a goal and an assist in his past four Premiership fixtures.

Henderson was Klopp’s star vs WHU

Liverpool earned successive 3-1 away wins in the capital as they triumphed against West Ham at the London Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

A brace from Mohamed Salah and a goal from Georginio Wijnaldum were enough to seal the win before Craig Dawson’s late consolation earned a touch of credibility for David Moyes’ side.

Whilst Salah will rightly get a lot of credit for his two world-class goals in the second half, it was perhaps Jordan Henderson’s performance that will delight Klopp the most, as he produced another solid display in an unfamiliar position.

As per SofaScore, the Liverpool captain would earn a strong 7.0 rating for his display, with only Wijnaldum, Xherdan Shaqiri, Thiago and Salah rated higher.

The 31-year-old was featuring as a centre-back once again on Sunday, following the injuries to Joel Matip and Fabinho earlier in the week, but he showed that he can be relied upon when needed.

During the game, Henderson would contest four duels with West Ham players. He would win all of them.

This is even more impressive when you consider the physical nature of Moyes’ side, which boasts the likes of Tomas Soucek, Dawson and Michail Antonio, to name just a few.

The 30-year-old would enjoy 95 touches of the ball against West Ham, which was 55 more than Hammers centre-back Angelo Ogbonna, whilst 80/89 of his passes would find a Liverpool shirt, resulting in a solid 90% pass accuracy – more than his season average of 87.2%.

Despite playing at the back, Henderson was still able to showcase his passing ability, as he contributed one key pass, which was more than both of West Ham’s central midfielders and more than his average of 0.6 in the Premier League so far this season.

Last year, Klopp was full of praise for his captain, saying:

“He is exceptional; he is outstanding.”

Therefore, whilst Salah was the hero for Liverpool with his brace, Henderson’s near-perfect display against an in-form West Ham side means that he should earn a lot of plaudits too.

Arsenal’s predicted XI vs Spurs

After a superb victory in the Europa League on Thursday night, Arsenal return to Premier League action when they take on Tottenham in the north London derby.

Mikel Arteta’s side ran out 3-1 winners against Olympiacos in Greece, with the Gunners well set to progress to the next round of the competition.

The Premier League has been far more difficult for Arsenal, however, with a 1-1 draw at Burnley last week seeing them lose yet more ground in the race to finish in a European place for next season.

Despite going with a strong line-up against Olympiacos, Arteta will surely want to earn his first victory against Spurs, and that should see very few changes made to the team.

With that in mind, below is a look at how the Gunners might take to the field for Sunday’s clash against their arch-rivals.

In goal, Bernd Leno will be hoping to keep his first clean sheet in nine games in all competitions, with the Arsenal defence shooting themselves in the foot against both Olympiacos and Burnley last week.

The back four could see one key change, with the £85k-a-week earning Pablo Mari coming in for Gabriel, despite the latter scoring a stunning header to give the Gunners the lead in midweek – it would certainly be a bold call to make, but Arteta appears to really fancy Mari in the Premier League, with the Spaniard starting the last three games in the competition.

In midfield, Thomas Partey was taken off early in the second half on Thursday, but Arteta was quick to confirm after the game that this wasn’t down to any injury issues, so the Ghanaian should line up alongside Granit Xhaka once again.

Further ahead, Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka and Willian should all keep their places from Thursday, with the latter actually moving to top spot in the assist charts for Arsenal with his performance against Olympiacos despite being much-maligned at times this season.

Gunners top scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang leads the line once more, hoping to score in this fixture just as he did last term.

Predicted XI: Leno; Bellerin, Luiz, Mari, Tierney; Partey, Xhaka; Saka, Odegaard, Willian; Aubameyang.

Meanwhile, Arsenal could sign a Xhaka upgrade in this Premier League star…

Everton fans laud South America news

Many Everton fans have been welcoming the news that the South American FIFA World Cup qualifiers due to take place in March have been cancelled.

As per Sky Sports, the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) has decided to suspend March’s double header of qualifiers for Qatar 2022 amid concern over the impact of the global pandemic and quarantine restrictions.

The tightening lockdown and quarantine regulations mean that numerous European-based players will be unable to travel, which may come as a benefit for the Goodison Park club.

The likes of Allan, James Rodriguez, Richarlison and Yerry Mina would have all joined up with Brazil and Colombia if not for the restrictions, which now means that they will all get two weeks’ worth of rest instead.

It means that the Merseyside club will be able to have all of their players fresh and ready for the end of the 2020/21 campaign as Carlo Ancelotti’s men look to chase automatic qualification for the Champions League for next season.

Why Palace struck gold with Eberechi Eze

Much like Wilfried Zaha before him, Eberechi Eze has been nothing short of a revelation for Crystal Palace since he first stepped foot inside Selhurst Park, especially in recent months.

When Steve Parish agreed to pay Queens Park Rangers £16m for his services in the summer, some Palace fans couldn’t quite believe their luck, none more so than journalist Taylor Rockwell, who told the Total Soccer Show that he is a “very exciting” talent.

As of right now, Roy Hodgson’s side find themselves in 13th place in the Premier League, level on points with Southampton and two behind Arsenal at the halfway point of the campaign.

This is thanks in no small part to the impact Eze has had at Selhurst Park, having made 21 top-flight appearances in the Premier League with three goals and three assists to show for his 16 starts.

Now, granted his numbers are still quite small in comparison to the goal-scoring exploits of Zaha, but it’s fair to say that he offers so much more than that.

Other than Zaha, Palace have long lacked a creative influence capable of single-handedly changing the game on his own arguably ever since Victor Moses departed SE25.

While some wingers will bide their time and wait for an opportunity, Eze is prepared to bring the ball forward, as evidenced by his two dribbles per 90 in the Premier League during his time with Palace this season thus far, that the best of all his teammates, as per WhoScored.

And it’s not just his dribbling that has caught the eye. His role as a set-piece specialist means he boasts a WhoScored strength of ‘taking set-pieces’ to go with his dribbling and passing ability. The 22-year-old memorably scored directly from a free-kick against Leeds United to mark his first goal for the club at Selhurst Park.

His playing style has earned its fair share of plaudits with recent praise coming from Liverpool and Tottenham defender Jamie Redknapp, who told Sky Sports (via The Daily Mail): “Eze has been so influential though I actually want to see more of him. (He’s) Very impressive he’s a star man. When he’s on the ball he’s so exciting to watch.”

Palace have clearly hit the jackpot as they’ve got another playmaker for at least the next couple of years, providing that they don’t receive an offer they can’t refuse in the meantime, of course.

Now valued at €30m (£26m) by CIES Football Observatory, there’s no doubting the fact the Eagles have struck gold with the England U21 international.

Eric Bailly was superb vs Real Sociedad

Mikel Oyarzabal was left to rue his missed penalty as Manchester United strolled into the Europa League last 16 with a goalless draw against Real Sociedad.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side kept a clean sheet thanks to the concerted efforts of Dean Henderson, but while the goalkeeper caught the eye with a string of eye-catching saves, it was Eric Bailly who was arguably Solskjaer’s unsung hero on the night.

The centre-back, who arrived at Old Trafford from Villarreal for £30m in 2016, has found himself jostling for position with Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof for a spot in Solskjaer’s starting XI since the start of the season.

And on Thursday night, Bailly looked back to his formidable best, putting in a shift at the back, as he kept the likes of Alexander Isak and Oyarzabal in his back pocket for most of the game.

As per SofaScore, he made three clearances, which was the joint-highest of any player for United bar Lindelof, while his total of two interceptions was the most of any Red Devils defender, including Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Alex Telles.

It just goes to show that the experienced Ivory Coast international defender was the commanding presence at the heart of United’s backline which constantly frustrated the Sociedad attack, staying tight to Isak and denying the Swede any time or space on the ball, proving to be a thorn in their side for large periods of the game as he won every single one of his three individual battles.

For context, Isak lost three out of his four duels overall, and it was no surprise to see him substituted after 45 minutes.

Furthermore, Bailly also completed two successful dribbles from two attempts, producing a further four accurate long balls from five attempts, showing a willingness to bring the ball out from the back in an attempt to set his side on the front foot.

The 26-year-old, therefore, was a dominant presence aerially and stuck to his tasks well on the night, sending Solskjaer an important statement as a result.

West Ham fans blast Ben Johnson

During West Ham United’s away match to Manchester City in the Premier League this afternoon, plenty of Irons weren’t impressed with the performance of defender Ben Johnson after he was handed a start up against Riyad Mahrez – with one supporter even claiming he was a ‘liability’.

David Moyes gifted Johnson a start against the league leaders, with the youngster part of a back five tasked to keep the Sky Blues at bay.

After a number of misplaced passes and looking hesitant at times up against Mahrez, who got the winning assist, many Irons believe this wasn’t the encounter to entrust Johnson as a wing back.

Indeed, the consensus among supporters appears to be that the 21-year-old looked somewhat out of his depth at the Etihad Stadium – dropping their array of opinions on his performance.

Flocking to social media, some Hammers labelled his display as ‘shocking’ and a ‘nightmare’ at times.

Leeds: Bamford fumes at VAR

Leeds United narrowly lost to Wolves in the Premier League on Friday night, however talisman Patrick Bamford believes VAR denied the club of getting some points out of the game.

Bamford fumes at VAR

The striker thought he had equalised in the second-half following a nice strike, but it was ruled out as offside. Looking back at the decision, you can see that there is only a few millimetres in the decision. Bamford tweeted: “Gutted for the lads tonight, robbed of a point but at least it’s ‘mAkInG tHe GaMe BeTtEr’ we go again Tuesday”

The striker has a point

Bamford has indeed had a great campaign so far this season, scoring twelve Premier League goals in 20 appearances (Transfermarkt). He has received praise by many, one being Gabriel Agbonlahor, who said: “He’s been outstanding”

As well as his twelve goals, Bamford has also picked up five assists and managed 3.3 shots per game (WhoScored). Without his eleven goals, Leeds would be a lot closer to the relegation zone than they currently are. With it being mentioned by many that Bamford could possibly get an England call-up, the amount of goals he can get this season matters massively.

When the decision is so tight, it seems silly to not give the decision to the attacker, as he is not getting an advantage from being millimetres offside. This plus him battling for an England spot emphasises that it is understandable to see him so frustrated at the goal being disallowed.
