Newcastle United: Allan Saint-Maximin tipped to leave as he draws focus from Wolves

Allan Saint-Maximin has been tipped to leave Newcastle United in the summer transfer window as he has drawn focus from Wolverhampton Wanderers, according to the Daily Mail.

As per the outlet, Wolves are not looking to sign too many players, but one man that they are focusing on signing is Saint-Maximin, who the publication have tipped to leave St. James’ Park.

Indeed, given his rather impressive debut season in England, this would not be good news for the Magpies if they lose him, especially to a Premier League rival.

Saint-Maximin scored three goals and made a further four assists in 26 games in the 2019/20 campaign in the top flight, while also averaging 1.8 shots, 1.3 key passes and 4.7 dribbles per game (via Whoscored).

The 23-year played a key part in keeping the Tyneside club in England’s highest division, but being a standout performer, some members of the Toon Army may be wondering at what potential cost.

If the proposed takeover in the North East is not approved by the league, then Saint-Maximin may well look elsewhere to further his ambition, and Nuno Espirito Santo’s team may fit given that they can still possibly qualify for the UEFA Champions League if they win the Europa League.

Former Tottenham Hotspur, Leeds United and England international goalkeeper Paul Robinson has previously suggested that the Frenchman could leave if the takeover collapses, so the chances of him staying could be boosted if the £300 million deal between Mike Ashley and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabian (KSA) group is given the green light.

Nevertheless, surely NUFC will look to keep Saint-Maximin out of the grasp of the likes of WWFC.

Tottenham Hotspur: Merih Demiral attracts Spurs interest as Daniel Levy eyes sixth summer signing

According to an update by TuttoJuve, Tottenham Hotspur have lodged a bid to sign Juventus defender Merih Demiral with a fee of around £27.3 million – but the Serie A giants reportedly turned down a huge offer from both Daniel Levy and fellow Premier League side Everton.

Demiral, who started just five league games for the Old Lady last season due to injury, still managed to impress in that time – averaging a 92% pass accuracy and making 2.5 clearances per match (WhoScored).

These glimpses of quality have arguably swayed Spurs into Demiral’s direction despite a lengthy spell on the sidelines over 19/20 due to a cruciate ligament rupture, with Everton also displaying a firm interest as per this report.

Indeed, both clubs have submitted £27.3 million offers to Juve in their search for defenders, but it appears Tottenham may have to look elsewhere for a Milan Skriniar alternative after their proposal was rejected.

The 6ft 4 star, deemed ‘brimming with confidence’ at one stage before his injury by Juventus manager Maurizio Sarri, was preferred over fellow elite centre-half Matthijs de Ligt last year in flashes.

Now, with his market value hovering around the £24.3 million mark (Transfermarkt), Tottenham may need a much larger sum given Juve’s stance on their latest bid.

A 13-cap international for his native Turkey, it’s clear that Demiral does possess enough quality to succeed in England’s top flight based off his past plaudits – with Skriniar negotiations still a work of progress and the 22-year-old now emerging as a potential secondary choice.

Whether or not Spurs come back with a new and improved offer remains to be seen, but landing the colossus would arguably be a good bit of business.

West Ham dodged a bullet with Munas Dabbur after blunt Israel display

West Ham United appear to have dodged a bullet in Munas Dabbur after the TSG Hoffenheim striker proved a blunt weapon in Israel’s UEFA European Championship Play-Off defeat to Scotland on Thursday night.

The Irons emerged as a potential transfer destination for Dabbur late last month when reports by Transfer20 proposed that the east London outfit and AS Roma had approached Hoffenheim for greater information on the 28-year-old’s situation.

Roma identified Dabbur as a late window option after struggling to land their more desired offensive targets, while West Ham saw the 24-cap attacker as the missing piece in David Moyes’ plans that would have ensured a mid-table finish in the Premier League.

But Hoffenheim were not prepared to sell, as the Bundesliga outfit only acquired Dabbur from Sevilla in a €12million (£10.8m) deal this January and see the Maccabi Tel Aviv product as a key figure in their aspirations of qualifying for the Champions League come the end of the 2020/21 campaign.

While Moyes was keen to see West Ham sign another forward in the summer market to add depth behind Michail Antonio and Sebastien Haller, the Scottish coach would have been relieved Hoffenheim refused to sell Dabbur following his efforts against Scotland.

Israel coach Willi Ruttensteiner called on Dabbur to open the European Championship Play-Off affair at Hampden Park on Thursday alongside Eran Zahavi, yet barely saw the Nazareth-born striker enter their host’s penalty area before being taken off seven minutes from time.

Dabbur saw plenty of the ball with 52 touches but struggled to produce anything from his time in possession, with the Hoffenheim man often taking up wide positions until Real Valladolid’s Shon Weissman came on to try and fire Israel into the Play-Off Final that Scotland will contend with Serbia after their 5-3 penalty shoot-out victory.

Ruttensteiner would have been frustrated with the performance given by Dabbur, who SofaScore note failed to register a single effort on goal and only attempted one dribble, whilst losing possession 13 times, losing four of six ground duels, committing one foul and misplacing his only attempted cross.

Performances like his against Scotland at the London Stadium would go down like a led balloon, so West Ham can count themselves lucky Hoffenheim refused to sell.

Dabbur broke his duck in front of goal for Hoffenheim in a shock 4-1 win over Bayern Munich last month, with what has so far been the 28-year-old’s only goal of the domestic campaign – adding to his six in 15 appearances for the Rhein-Neckar Arena natives following a mid-season move.

AND in other news, West Ham could land David Moyes’ ideal defensive partner for Angelo Ogbonna in a Championship talent his current side landed for £4m.

Celtic: Hoops reportedly close to signing defender Diego Laxalt

Scottish Premiership side Celtic agreed to allow full-back Boli Bolingoli to move to Turkish side İstanbul Başakşehir on a loan deal earlier in the transfer window.

This has left them with only one left-back at the club in Scottish international Greg Taylor, however it seems that Neil Lennon has now found his replacement for Bolingoli on transfer deadline day.

According to Football Insider, the reigning Scottish champions have agreed a season-long loan deal for Serie A defender Diego Laxalt.

It looks like all that is needed to be finalised are the final small details, and this will finally have ended their search for cover in the left-back position.

The 27 year-old has been surplus to requirements at AC Milan for some time as he only managed six appearances for the club last season, per Transfermarkt, and was loaned out for the first half of the 2019/20 campaign to fellow Serie A side Torino.

Whilst on loan, he was given more of a chance to impress as he featured 16 times in the division, picking up one assist as well as managing an average of 1.2 tackles and 1.1 clearances per game, via WhoScored.

It seems like he is of similar quality to Taylor at the Hoops as the defender has played eight times in the Scottish Premiership for Lennon this season, per WhoScored, picking up three assists, and managing 1.4 tackles and one clearance on average in 2020/21.

What perhaps highlights that Laxalt will come in as cover to start with is the fact that Taylor offers a bit more in attack as along with his assists – he has averaged 1.3 key passes a game this campaign.

There is no doubting the quality of Laxalt, who has featured 24 times for his country Uruguay, per Transfermarkt, as he comes with great experience at a top level. He looks to be a great signing for the Bhoys as he will definitely strengthen the squad and possibly even the first XI as they fight to retain the title and also battle in Europe.

Celtic news: Bhoys given big boost in Duffy chase after latest update

Shane Duffy is a wanted man. Ever since the opening of the ongoing summer transfer window and even much earlier than that, the Brighton and Hove Albion defender has attracted a lot of interest from many Premier League clubs.

But alongside the England’s best, Celtic have also been mentioned in the conversation. And now, according to exclusive information provided by Daily Record, despite the Bhoys not being able to financially match most of the other big clubs’ offers, Duffy himself has grown up a Celtic fan and that could indeed make all the difference in terms of his decision at the end of the day.

Of course, the Scottish Premier League giants understand it will be a very complicated deal nonetheless because they don’t exactly have the funds to go into bidding wars with Premier League outfits.

The same source explains Duffy would be allowed to leave the club on loan for a fee of £2m but the problem is, Celtic’s rivals are looking to acquire his services on a permanent deal, thus making it almost impossible for the Hoops to respond.

Neil Lennon will still make an effort to sign him and this romantic notion the defender holds towards the Scots might be the only advantage they have over their Premier League opposition.

Even that might not be enough but the source close to the talks do assure Duffy has that emotional connection with the club and that could very well play a role in this whole transfer saga in the end.

Verdict

It’s always difficult to target high-profile players without a warchest full of money at your disposal. However, while money is always an important aspect of any potential deal in football, the heart can also prevail.

And it is on the heart that Lennon will have to bet in this scenario.

Who is Ollie Watkins? – Profile

Name: Ollie Watkins

Club: Brentford

Date of Birth: 30 December 1995

Position: Centre-forward

OLLIE WATKINS – HIS CAREER SO FAR

Ollie Watkins is a 25-year-old centre-forward currently playing his football over at Brentford in the Championship. He grew up in Newton Abbot and some of his first gigs in the sport that would later on become his life were at Exeter City. He finally joined their academy at U11 level, having previously been rejected when he was only nine years old in 2003. But that stay in the academy would indeed prove to be quite good and Watkins sore through the ranks to land into the first-team after only a year.

He signed his scholarship in 2012 and by 2014, he also penned his first professional contract, winning his first call-ups and appearances for Exeter in the 2013/14 season. And this was a start of something special for the youngster as he would remain at the club for the following couple of years, albeit with a short loan spell at Weston-super-Mare along the way.

The loan happened between 2014 and 2015 and Watkins would record 24 appearances for the Seagulls, scoring ten goals and actually developing quite a bit as well. This was essentially his first big shot at a regular role in a senior team and he embraced it with both hands. And upon return to Exeter, Watkins was adamant on succeeding there as well.

The now 25-year-old forward ended up playing a total of 78 games for them, scoring 26 goals and also adding 17 assists on the side as well. Needless to say, it was quite a return for such a young player and soon afterwards, Brentford came knocking on the door. In the summer of 2017, Watkins joined the Bees on a four-year contract, signing an extension soon after that, in 2019.

Since then, he has scored 49 goals and assisted 17 across 142 games for Brentford, surely cementing his spot as one of the most important players in the squad and one that has gone through tremendous development since his early years at Exeter and beyond that.

Now, it doesn’t really come as a surprise that he is a wanted man and could very well be on the move to greener pastures quite soon. He is surely ready for it.

TRANSFER LATEST

With his rise through the ranks, Watkins has become a prime target for many Premier League outfits as of late and many transfer rumours have indeed connected him with a switch to the English top-tier. Some of the latest transfer news, however, suggest the newly-promoted Leeds United might look to secure his signature in an attempt to boost their squad for the upcoming challenge.

The 25-year-old has been tipped to join the Whites in numerous Leeds United transfer news so far and it will be interesting to see how Brentford respond to the rumours.

As it currently stands, the Bees might indeed struggle to keep Watkins around for much longer.

PLAYER PROFILE

Even though he used to be a winger by trade, Watkins has successfully transitioned into the role of a centre-forward. All of his best traits that he possessed as a wide man, however, have been retained and combined with the new skill set he had to adopt with the switch, the 25-year-old comes with an impressive package, to say the least.

He is extremely athletic and can use his clever positioning and off-the-ball movement to confuse the markers and both create and exploit the space behind their backs brilliantly. When necessary, Watkins can also be used to pin back the centre-backs and give more freedom to his teammates that way. With good dribbling abilities as well as knowing when to drop, drift or move away from his position, courtesy of his winger days, the 25-year-old can cause chaos in the final third.

On top of that, he seems to give Brentford a decent aerial threat as well.

Sheffield Wednesday: Fans react as Kachunga joins the club

Sheffield Wednesday have made a lot of movements in the transfer window so far, and they have announced another new addition to the squad on Twitter.

The club posted that Elias Kachunga has signed following his release from fellow Championship side Huddersfield. The 28 year-old centre-forward adds some much-needed firepower as before he signed, the club only had one natural striker on the books in Jordan Rhodes, who only managed three goals in the division last season.

Kachunga has a decent goal scoring record as he has played 365 games throughout his career and scored 99 times. He has also picked up 33 assists, per Transfermarkt. For Huddersfield in both the Premier League and the Championship, he scored 17 times and assisted 10 times.

To bring an experienced forward to the club is normally a good thing, and now manager Garry Monk will have a week before the Championship starts to work out a formation to get the best out of the player.

Here is what fans said following the news, with many delighted given they have finally beefed up their attacking options.
