A lower-order charge followed by disciplined bowling fashioned a tight win – the second in two days – for Khan Research Labs, as they beat Sui Northern Gas Pipelines by three runs. Defending 11 off the last over, with Azhar Ali on 57 still at the crease, 19-year-old Usman Khan gave away only eight and claimed a wicket off the final ball to seal the win.Having elected to bat first, KRL’s openers Mohammad Yasin and Zain Abbas took advantage of the field restrictions in the first six overs, hitting seven fours in a solid 40-run partnership. Amid steady progress, the only glitch being Abbas’ wicket in the seventh over, 21-year old medium pacer Bilawal Bhatti tore through KRL’s middle order in the space of three legitimate balls. He bowled a wide in between dismissing Saeed Anwar jr and Mohammad Yasin and then broke Ali Khan’s stumps off the next ball as well to leave KRL at 75 for 4 from 74 for 1 in the 13th over. An unbeaten sixth-wicket partnership of 33 runs in 19 balls between Naved Yasin and Zulfiqar Jan took KRL’s score to 131 in 20 overs, the exact total they made during their Super Over win against Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited.SNGPL’s chase hinged on Azhar Ali, who arrived to the crease after opener Azeem Ghumman fell in the second over. He and captain Taufeeq Umar added 51 runs together, before the latter became the first of two wickets claimed by Zain Abbas in the 11th over. Again SNGPL had to rebuild and Ali forged a 61-run stand with Ali Waqas, comprising six fours and a six. With two set batsmen at the crease and Ali having already completed his fifty, Rahat Ali struck a telling blow removing Waqas in the 19th over. An equation that read 11 off six balls became four off one when Usman Khan had Imran Khalid caught off the last ball.

A disciplined bowling performance by the Guyana Amazon Warriors, led by left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul’s 3 for 32, helped them win their opening match of the inaugural Caribbean Premier League against Trinidad & Tobago Red Steel by 19 runs in Providence.T&T won the toss and put Guyana in to bat, but they couldn’t contain the Guyanese openers Lendl Simmons and Martin Guptill who added 74 runs for the first wicket. The partnership was eventually broken by Samuel Badree when he got Guptill leg before for 32.With the score at 102 for 2, Simmons had helped Guyana set a platform for a big finish. T&T captain Dwayne Bravo, however, thwarted those plans with two wickets in the 16th over, accounting for Simmons (42) and Christopher Barnwell, who fell for a second ball-duck. Narsingh Deonarine was dismissed in the next over to leave Guyana at 106 for 5. Late fireworks from Ramnaresh Sarwan, who struck 21 off 12 balls, and James Franklin, who scored a 20-ball 26, ensured Guyana reached a competitive total of 155 for 5.T&T’s innings started steadily, as the openers had added 28 runs before Hafeez fell in the sixth over. Justin Guillen (22) and Darren Bravo (23) got starts, but were unable to guide the chase. Permaul, who came in to bowl in the ninth over, had immediate success, dismissing Davy Jacobs off the sixth ball of his first over. Ross Taylor’s dismissal in Permaul’s next over had T&T struggling at 50 for 3, with 106 needed off 57 balls.Wicketkeeper Nicolas Pooran, blitzed a 24-ball 54, which included six sixes, to keep T&T’s chase alive. But the wickets of Darren and Dwayne Bravo increased the pressure on Pooran and he perished in the 18th over, holing out to Mohammad Hafeez near long-off. T&T finished their innings at 136 for 9, 19 runs short of the target.

'Would be nice if Lorgat apologises' – Dalmiya

More than six weeks after Cricket South Africa chief executive Haroon Lorgat offered to “apologise” to anyone who he had offended in the BCCI, Jagmohan Dalmiya, the interim BCCI chief, has welcomed Lorgat’s offer

Amol Karhadkar04-Sep-2013More than six weeks after Cricket South Africa chief executive Haroon Lorgat offered to “apologise” to anyone who he had offended in the BCCI, Jagmohan Dalmiya, the interim BCCI chief, has welcomed Lorgat’s offer.”Lorgat is a nice gentleman but it would be nice of him if he apologises,” Dalmiya said in Kolkata, when asked about his reaction to Lorgat’s offer that was made immediately after he was appointed the CSA chief executive despite the BCCI raising its objections. While this may appear as softening of the BCCI’s stand with Lorgat, the deadlock over the BCCI going to trim what was till a few days ago a tour of three Tests, seven ODIs and two Twenty20s, prevailed for another day. While Dalmiya reiterated what the BCCI president N Srinivasan had said three days ago that “the tour is on”, there was no formal exchange between representatives of the two boards. Even though Srinivasan, board secretary Sanjay Patel and treasurer Ravi Savant were together for most of the day along with other key executives at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai, it was understood that the South Africa tour itinerary “wasn’t even mentioned” in their discussions.”The sole purpose of the meeting was to proof read and sign the annual report before it goes for printing ahead of the AGM,” said an insider who was a part of the proceedings.Across the continent, CSA indicated it would send out a release on Wednesday afternoon to reassure the fans and thank them for their support, but later said they would “try for tomorrow”. Officials contacted at various franchises said they had no knowledge of any progress on the BCCI-CSA issue and were awaiting further instructions, although many of them expressed concern over a curtailed tour.It appears that unless CSA accedes to the cricket bosses in India, the situation is unlikely to change. At least till the BCCI AGM on September 29.

White takes Northants to quarter-finals

Northamptonshire booked their place in the Friends Life T20 quarter-finals with a comfortable win over Glamorgan in Cardiff.Fine displays from Cameron White and Azharullah enabled Northamptonshire to win this top of the table clash in the Midlands, Wales and West Group by six wickets, with nine balls to spare. Glamorgan, unbeaten at home until tonight, will have to beat Gloucestershire at Cardiff on Tuesday to have any chance of reaching the last eight.White scored 71 from 48 balls while Azharullah recorded figures of 4 for 16 runs from his four overs as Glamorgan were restricted to 125 for 9. Azharullah produced a fine spell, with his first three overs only producing six runs.Only Chris Cooke, with 50 from 38 balls, took the attack to the Northamptonshire bowlers with only two other batsmen – Mark Wallace (22) and Nathan McCullum (20) – getting into double figures. After the early loss of in-form Jim Allenby, Azharullah’s first victim, in the third over, Cooke and Wallace got Glamorgan into a useful position at 71 for 1 in the 10th over. But after Wallace holed out to Azharullah to long-on Glamorgan’s runs dried up with no boundaries coming between the ninth and 14th overs. And from 90 for 2 Glamorgan lost seven wickets for the addition of only 35 runs. Captain Marcus North looked out of form as he was caught off Steven Crook before Cooke was dismissed in the next over the ball after reaching his 50. McCullum struck three fours but Glamorgan’s total looked nothing more than competitive.Northamptonshire had looked comfortable in the opening three overs as they reached 21 without loss but Glamorgan struck when the dangerous Richard Levi was run out at the non-striker’s end off the bowler’s hand.Kyle Coetzer looked in good form but was caught at midwicket by Ben Wright off Michael Hogan. White hit McCullum for a straight six as the Australian took the pressure of his side’s chase. After nine overs the visitors had reached 50 for 2.But they suffered a setback when captain Alex Wakely holed out off Dean Cosker to make it 62 for 3 in the 12th over. Crook took the pressure off with two consecutive fours as 15 came off an over from Jim Allenby as 36 were required from the final 30 balls.White reached his 50 from 42 balls with four fours and a six as the visitors needed only 18 runs from 18 balls. White hit two sixes off the 17th over from McCullum as Northamptonshire eased to victory.
