Spurs fans react to Heung-min Son’s frustration

Tottenham Hotspur’s start to the 2019/20 campaign has seen the club slide to seventh in the Premier League table, and the decision from Mauricio Pochettino to bench one of the club’s key men in this weekend’s clash with Watford has got some fans talking after his passionate reaction to Spurs going behind against the Hornets.

Heung-min Son, 27, was benched by Pochettino for the game against the Premier League’s bottom side who were winless coming into the clash at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Yet Spurs needed an 86th-minute equaliser from Dele Alli to secure a point against the Hornets as their inconsistent start to the current campaign continued with yet another disappointing domestic result.

After witnessing Son’s reaction to Spurs going behind, these fans were quick to jump to Twitter, with some praising him and others questioning why Pochettino left him on the bench in the first place.

Here are some of the best responses to Son’s reaction to his side conceding…

Charlton fans react as Manuel Pellegrini dismisses recalling Josh Cullen in January

Charlton fans have taken to Twitter to react after Manuel Pellegrini delivered an update on Josh Cullen’s loan spell at The Valley.

The West Ham boss dismissed the idea of recalling the Republic of Ireland international and Grady Diangana from their loan spells at Charlton and West Brom respectively, when asked the question in his press conference ahead of the weekend’s action.

Cullen has been in fine form for the south Londoners once again this season having shone in their promotion campaign last term, with some fans even calling for his arrival on a permanent basis when in fact being asked about Jonathan Leko – that just shows how much he is valued by the supporters.

In Diangana’s case, the forward has shone for the Baggies with eight goal involvements in ten starts – Pellegrini’s update will presumably delight both West Brom and Charlton fans.

Let’s take a look at how the Addicks supporters on Twitter reacted to the news…

Liverpool fans slam Naby Keita for performance at home to Genk

A number of Liverpool fans have taken to social media to blast the performance of Naby Keita in Tuesday’s Champions League clash with Genk.

The 24-year-old has only played 14 minutes of Premier League football this season but made his third Champions League appearance of the campaign against Genk at Anfield.

Keita lasted until the 74th minute of the match when Jurgen Klopp made his first change – Andrew Robertson entering the field in place of the midfielder.

According to WhoScored, Keita had five shots, made three tackles and completed three dribbles during his time on the field.

However, it would be fair to say that the Liverpool supporters were not impressed by what they saw overall from the 2018 arrival in the 2-1 victory, if their reaction on social media is anything to go by.

The 33-time Guinea international made 33 appearances for the Reds last term but failed to convince, whilst he is also yet to ignite this season.

Newcastle fans call out board members for dishonesty over Jaap Stam approach

Newcastle United did not approach the former Manchester United defender Jaap Stam to become the manager at St James’ Park, according to The Chronicle.

Stam, who is currently managing Feyenoord, told Voetbal International that the Magpies approached him just days after taking the reigns of the Rotterdam based-outfit.

It’s another headache in the Mike Ashley story after the businessman’s sale of the club to a Mexican consortium fell through recently, with the Sports Direct owner coming across as ‘rude’.

Fans of the North East club had made their feelings known about their controversial owner since the resignation of Kevin Keegan in 2008 and have been unable to force Ashley out.

Supporters were not impressed with the club’s stance on Stam, contrary to his claims in the Dutch media. One fan said that he knows sources within the club that are consistently dishonest and is not aware of the Dutch manager of telling lies. Another supporter reminded fans that the club admitted at Keegan’s tribunal that it intentionally misled the press, public and fans of the Magpies.

Leeds’ Patrick Bamford’s poor game vs Preston put into perspective by stats

Leeds’ striker position has been the topic of a number of debates ever since this season started.

Eddie Nketiah continues to perform, and Patrick Bamford continues to fluff his lines in front of goal.

The Whites only managed to pick up a draw against Preston North End on Tuesday evening, but they could have very easily won it if Bamford had his shooting boots on.

His poor finishing was the exclamation point on what was an all-round poor evening for the former Middlesbrough man, and a look at his stats after the game shows just how bad he was.

The main point of concern is obviously Bamford’s inability to hit the target with his shots.

Six efforts came and went from the 26-year-old, yet the goalkeeper wasn’t tested by any of them.

Check out the real life version of FIFA 20’s Volta Football in the video below…

It’s not as if these were potshots from 30 or 40 yards either, these were efforts that many strikers in the Championship would have a great chance of scoring from.

This isn’t a new phenomenon either as it’s now eight matches since Bamford found the net.

However, there is always the argument that his game is about so much more than just goals, but we didn’t get to see that at Deepdale.

The striker was barely involved in the game having just 26 touches, and he made just one key pass – the least out of any of the Whites’ outfield players barring Leeds’ two centre-backs. Therefore, it’s not just his finishing let him down.

While there is great value in having Eddie Nketiah on the bench and bringing him on for Bamford late on, if the 26-year-old is going to perform like this when he does start it may be time for Bielsa to start looking at some different options upfront.

Aston Villa’s Bjorn Engels still has a lot to prove against elite opposition

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

Aston Villa’s run of three Premier League matches without defeat came to a probable end at the weekend as reigning champions Manchester City eased to victory at the Etihad Stadium.

Dean Smith’s men went into the break with honours even, but within 20 seconds of the second half, Raheem Sterling handed the home side the lead before David Silva and Ilkay Gundogan rounded off a 3-0 victory.

Though, City did finish the match with ten men as Fernandinho received a second yellow card with less than three minutes remaining.

Villa slipped down to 15th, but do have a three-point cushion from the relegation zone – but their afternoon could have been much worse.

If anything, Pep Guardiola’s side deserved more from the game, considering they registered a total of 26 shots and 63% possession.

And if that doesn’t tell you the scoreline was in favour of Villa, then it could quite easily have been at least 5-0, had City’s attackers made the most of Bjorn Engels’ errors at the back.

Per SofaScore, the summer signing failed to register a single tackle, won just one of his aerial duels, and lost possession eight times. It was a rare bad day at the office for the Belgian – or was it?

Understat’s xG model suggests that Villa should be third-last for goals conceded if teams had converted more chances against them, and given that the 25-year-old has featured in every game, he’s been part of the problem.

Aston Villa’s summer signings’ performances so far this season are rated in the video below…

Villa have leaked three goals against the three elite opposition they’ve faced this season, with Liverpool to come too – the opening day against Tottenham, against a ten-man Arsenal and last Saturday.

This suggests that Smith’s signings at the back, most namely Engels, have failed to struggle with the quality on offer in the Premier League, which is why he’s probably playing at Villa Park each week and not for his dream club (L’Equipe via the Daily Mirror), the Gunners, who could probably do with him themselves.

Real Madrid’s Rodrygo dropped a masterclass against Galatasaray

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

Real Madrid are slowly but surely getting back to their absolute best and that is definitely great news for their fans and terrible for their rivals.

On Wednesday night, Los Blancos welcomed Galatasaray to the Santiago Bernabeu and treated them to six goals into their net, with no reply whatsoever.

By all means, it was a statement performance by Zinedine Zidane’s men and one that could very well signal their entrance on the stage moving forward.

The start to the season was a rocky one but now, it seems that Los Blancos are finally dancing to the Frenchman’s desired tune and are looking to get even better as we move past the early stages of the campaign.

But one player who stood head and shoulders above the rest was actually the youngest one on the pitch on the night – Rodrygo Goes.

Real Madrid’s 18-year-old prodigy didn’t have the best start to the season as minutes would scarcely come his way in the first couple of outings.

Watch Lionel Messi and Gareth Bale answer the internet’s weirdest questions in the video below…

All of this changed, however, as Zidane finally realised Rodrygo is electrifyingly good whenever he’s on the pitch and with the ball in his feet.

Against Galatasaray, the youngster scored a hat-trick and registered one more assist in the process, getting himself involved in four out of six goals the Galacticos bagged on Wednesday night.

Interestingly enough, he scored three goals with three shots on target and also managed to maintain a 92.5% passing accuracy in the process as well.

All of that warranted him a perfect 10/10 rating given by WhoScored, and looking at his breathtaking performance as a whole it was a well-deserved accolade.

Now, after that clash, the youngster has a tally of six goals and one assist across all competitions in the 2019/20 season, including his ventures with Real Madrid’s B team, while he has five goals and an assist in six games for the seniors.

By all standards, it seems that Zidane has a true prodigy on his hands.

Let’s see how he handles him this season.

The varying fortunes of Almiron and Perez sum up Newcastle’s poor form

Newcastle continued to disappoint in front of goal against Wolves and but for a rare headed goal from Jamaal Lascelles, it is unlikely they would have stained Rui Patricio’s clean sheet.

They had just two shots on target in the entire match and once again one of the best chances fell to Miguel Almiron, whose lack of composure let him down as his shot hit the side netting.

It is a familiar story for the Paraguay international. He uses his pace brilliantly to get in behind the defence but clearly lacks the confidence and know-how to apply a finish.

As a result, he is still to break his duck for Newcastle and is approaching ten months at the club, an underwhelming return for a player signed for a then club record of £20m.

By contrast, one player who left St James’ Park in the summer was in electric form at his new club this weekend – Ayoze Perez.

He finished his stint at Newcastle in fine form and has continued to impress at Leicester, and though he isn’t always first choice he has scored three and assisted two for the Foxes.

On Friday night he scored a hat trick as Brendan Rodgers’ side put nine past a hapless Southampton side – that’s three more goals than the Magpies have scored in the league all season.

Newcastle, therefore, are clearly missing the invention and eye for goal that the Spaniard provided, with Almiron’s failure to step up adequately as his replacement resulting in a toothless attack.

A lack of service for Joelinton has left the new attacker with just one goal in ten league games.

The varying fortunes of Almiron and Perez sum up why Newcastle are hovering dangerously close to the relegation zone, and the Magpies faithful will certainly be missing the Spaniard’s creativity and goal scoring prowess during a spell that has been devoid of attacking inspiration.
