Theo Walcott is a ‘really important player’ for Everton, says Marco Silva

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Marco Silva has praised Theo Walcott for his contributions to the side in recent times, claiming that the Englishman is a “really important player” for Everton.

What did he say?

Walcott has been a shining light this past month in what has been a very dark time for the club. Players across the pitch have failed to pull their weight, and the club have been fighting around the relegation zone ever since.

Walcott once again played a hand in an Everton win, just as he did against West Ham United. His assist for Bernard’s goal against the Hammers and his assist for Holgate against Watford have shown he is a vital man for Silva right now.

The Blues boss said: “Theo had a big impact again, the change we made [Walcott for Kean] had a big impact on our second half,” added Silva.

“Theo was always a really important player for me, he knows that. He is in a good moment and will help us in the next games as well.

“The way we built our attacks [after half-time] was faster and the gaps were clearer. We found the spaces more easily.”

More important than ever

It is easy to justify Walcott’s importance lately, simply by the fact that he has assisted both opening goals in Everton’s last two wins. But now, because of the injury to Bernard, the former Arsenal man is going to be more important than ever for the club.

In the game against Watford on Tuesday, Kean was bringing very little to the side in an unfamiliar wide role. He completed just three passes and never successfully dribbled past a player or created an opportunity. In truth, it was another forgetful performance from the Italian.

However, when he was replaced by Walcott for the second half, the Englishman brought to the pitch speed and more creativity. His assist and two dribble attempts showed more than what Kean gave in the entire first half.

Right now, with the injury to Bernard and the 30-year-old’s creative nature, Walcott is proving to be one of Silva’s most valuable assets in one of the more surprising sub plots to emerge at Goodison Park this season.

Exclusive: Hartson likens Spurs’ position to that of Arsenal of the last ten years

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, John Hartson made comparisons between the recent success of Tottenham and the Arsenal side of the previous ten years, suggesting that both clubs deserve credit for what they have been able to achieve under immense financial strain.

The two teams have each moved into new, state of the art stadiums whilst continuing to build success on the pitch, and although Spurs remain without a trophy since 2008, they were able to record a world record profit of £113m despite the stadium build.

Despite that, some Spurs fans remain frustrated at Daniel Levy for what they consider a lack of spending, perhaps feeling that wage budget constraints limit the type of players they are able to sign, or hold onto.

However, others have praised some of the work done by the Tottenham chairman, and Hartson believes that acknowledgement should also be given to their fierce rivals.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, he said: “If you praise Levy, you’ve got to praise one or two others for doing similar jobs as well.

“They’ve been able to manage the club and remain successful while they’ve built the new stadium. Like Arsenal did 10 years ago. It’s a carbon copy of Arsenal.”

A new stadium isn’t the only similarity they share with their neighbours. For all the improvements of recent years and the four consecutive years of Champions League qualification, they have no silverware to show for it.

The Gunners similarly went on a barren run between 2005 and 2014 yet qualified for Europe’s elite competition in each of those years.

“They won FA Cups but Pochettino hasn’t won anything. He [Arsene Wenger] continued to win FA Cups, he got the club in the Champions League for 22 seasons on the spin, which was remarkable. Arsenal were questioning Wenger about not buying anybody or spending any money, but they continued to be successful,” added the former striker.

“I think Spurs have been very unlucky not to win a trophy under Pochettino, who I think is a fantastic manager. But when you talk about Daniel Levy and what he tried to do, it’s exactly what the Arsenal board did with Arsene Wenger.”

There is still work to do for Spurs and Pochettino if they are to better the recent history of their north London rival, and until they win something the same questions and doubts will linger over the club.

Manchester City fans keen to see Phil Foden start against Atalanta

Manchester City fans have expressed their desire to see academy graduate Phil Foden start in the Champions League tonight against Atalanta.

The 19-year-old has played only 11 minutes of Premier League action so far and is still finding it extremely difficult to earn a spot in Pep Guardiola’s side.

With the Italian side slumped at the bottom of Group C without a point, now would be the perfect time for Foden to get some minutes, especially considering Atalanta have let in six goals in two games.

As was announced earlier in the year, David Silva will be leaving the Etihad at the end of the season.

If the City youth product is going to replace El Mago as the club’s playmaker, Foden will need nights like this to grow and learn as a player.

Indeed, fans believe this is the perfect time for the youngster to start and learn his trade on the big stage.

Having come through the ranks at City and born in the local area of Stockport, the midfielder is already a fan favourite with the Etihad faithful, and it seems supporters want him to play much more.

Here’s what some of them had to say…

Man City star Raheem Sterling hailed by Garth Crooks for defensive contribution

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Raheem Sterling was included in Garth Crooks’ Team of the Week after his display against Crystal Palace and the BBC Sport pundit praised the Englishman for one particularly outstanding defensive moment.

What did he say?

Sterling had a helping hand in Manchester City’s 2-0 victory over the Eagles, providing a sumptuous assist for David Silva’s killer second goal, but it wasn’t only his creative ingenuity that caught Crooks’ eye.

The former Liverpool man has bagged 41 Premier League goals for City over the past two years, which includes the six in eight games he has this campaign.

However, Crooks took the time out to praise Sterling for his defensive abilities: “I can’t remember a game where Raheem Sterling made such an impression without scoring. If ever anyone needed reminding just how much Sterling’s game has progressed under the watchful eye on Pep Guardiola then this was it.

“The way he chased back 40 yards and dispossessed Wilfried Zaha with the most exquisite slide tackle prior to setting up City’s next attack was sensational. Sterling is creeping ever closer to taking Cristiano Ronaldo’s mantle.

“A special performance in a Champions League win might do it.”

Guardiola’s complete package

Few players in world football have seen such an astonishing improvement over the last few seasons than Sterling has under Guardiola. The Spaniard has helped turn the forward into the complete player, scoring a multitude of high quality goals and blossoming into one of City and England’s most integral players.

And as was evident in the Palace game, he is proving to be a defensive asset as well.

Having scored 78 times now for City, Sterling has certainly established himself as one of the world’s best and proven to be one of the club’s main players in their record-breaking era.

Defensively, the 24-year-old made two tackles and completed two interceptions at Selhurst Park, which included that magnificent dart back to stop Zaha. In the same game, he also made three key passes and hit the woodwork once, proving to be a handful both in defence and attack.

If Sterling continues in this manner with goals and defensive work, his name could be thrown into the Ballon d’Or mix as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo edge into the twilight of their respective careers.

The City superstar was included in the 55-man shortlist for the FIFPro World XI, but did not make the cut in the end. However, if these incredible performances continue, he may rocket to the top of the awards sooner rather than later.

Man City’s transfer blunder has all but handed Liverpool the Premier League title

It would be entirely wrong to underplay Pep Guardiola’s role in Manchester City’s consecutive title wins, just as it would be remiss to underestimate Manuel Pellegrini’s managerial acumen that saw the Blues lift the Premier League trophy in 2013/14 scoring 102 goals along the way.

Yet running parallel to these coaching feats is an infrastructure that leaves nothing to chance, and is designed to elevate and keep the club within the world’s elite. There is the £200m academy of course, that is as impressive as it gets, and the numerous clubs around the globe that are affiliated with the City Football Group. But most pertinent to what we’re discussing is the long-term planning, dedication to detail, and strict adherence to an ethos that all comes together to make up Manchester City’s transfer strategy.

The principal players behind the strategy are City’s Director of Football Txiki Begiristain and Pep Guardiola though there is naturally significant input from others too, namely key members of the coaching staff. What helps matters hugely is that Begiristain and Guardiola have a close relationship, accrued from many years working in alliance at Barcelona and now City.

Together the pair identify the right targets, not only concentrating on ability but via a holistic approach that factors in a footballer’s character and crucially how they will fit into the framework of the squad. The most important criteria of all is whether the player in question will help evolve what can sometimes grandiosely be called the ‘project’.

Evolve. It’s impossible to avoid that word when talking about City’s transfer policy. In 2017 City paid £43m for Bernardo Silva not solely for his obvious qualities but because David Silva was the other side of thirty. This summer 23-year-old Rodri was acquired with the aim of recruiting a successor to 34-year-old Fernandinho. Next summer Sergio Aguero turns 32 and do not be remotely surprised if the rumours linking Kylian Mbappe to the Etihad start up again in earnest as such a move would fall plum within their remit. A superstar is phased out. A younger version is brought in.

Begiristain said in September of last year: “You don’t need to change 11 players every year. You need to change two or three.”

On its own this is a strategy that hardly amounts to rocket science. Yet that would discount the attention to detail that so often results in a player enjoying his peak years at City and furthermore – for what it’s worth, because City are not a selling club – increasing their value.

From Aguero joining at the age of 23 to Raheem Sterling and Kevin De Bruyne being procured aged 20 and 24 respectively – with the latter signing roundly and foolishly mocked for the supposedly hefty fee – there is a mightily impressive track record of bringing in young stars who go on to be enormously impactful at the club.

De Bruyne remarked recently: “The way that we did transfers the last years adds up.

“You see a lot of young talent coming in willing to play our style.”

Admittedly, along the way there has been the occasional misstep. The signing of Claudio Bravo springs to mind while the £32m purchase of Eliaquim Mangala equates to an uncharacteristic brain-fart. By and large though it is a sensible and militaristic strategy that has reaped dividends.

So much so in fact that other clubs now look to City as the way forward becoming as they have the standard bearers in recruitment and squad evolvement. Last month Gary Neville urged Manchester United to ‘build a foundation as Manchester City did and have done’.

Okay, let’s leave it there, enough with the praise. The point has been made and with that point being made a question now needs legitimately asking in all sincerity. Just what in the holy mother and father of all that is sane were City thinking of in the summer summer by letting Vincent Kompany go without replacing him?

Because there was no evolvement there: only a weakening. There was no long-term planning. No adherence to an ethos and absolutely zero holistic approach. Instead – entirely unnecessarily – there was only make do. Instead there was only a teary farewell to a club captain and instrumental leader followed by a quick head-count that totted up to just three centre-backs remaining. ‘Let’s roll the dice,’ appears to be the reasoning, or at least what passed for reasoning. ‘We’ll go into a long and demanding season that could very conceivably add up to seventy-plus games with only three conventional centre-backs and if need be we’ll convert Fernandinho’.

The carefully structured and laboriously considered remit that has helped furnish City with an abundance of silverware in recent times never rolled any dices. It covered every eventuality. It ensured there were two players competing for each position. It signed a long-term successor to Kompany two years ago when the Belgian was the other side of thirty and persistent injuries began to take a toll.

Except they didn’t. Not in this instance. Which meant that when Kompany informed Guardiola of his decision to leave the club ahead of last May’s FA Cup Final (City had hoped their inspirational captain would stay for a further year before joining the coaching staff) they faced a summer transfer window where the priorities were to sign the long-coveted Rodri and a centre-back of reputable standing.

Harry Maguire was sought, as has been widely reported but then, as has also been widely reported, City pulled out of the race for his signature at an early juncture due to being put off by the exorbitant asking price. “We cannot afford it,” Pep said of their decision to look elsewhere and if the benefit of the doubt can be given to that rather stretched explanation that’s fine because it’s likely there are a plethora of other top class centre-backs available at a cheaper price.

Except City didn’t look elsewhere. Instead they splurged their £60m on a right-back.

A long-term injury to Aymeric Laporte  – City’s only remaining Rolls Royce of a defender – has laid their risk bare. It leaves the reigning champions with only an injury-prone John Stones and a player in Nicolas Otamendi who inspires very little confidence.

Fernandinho meanwhile has indeed dropped back but has been tasked with learning the ropes amidst sheer chaos.

Consequently points have been dropped to Norwich and Wolves – on both occasions directly due to defensive horror-shows – and, by virtue of being eight points behind a Liverpool team who lost only once last season, City’s aspirations to win a third title on the bounce are all but extinguished.

Can it be assumed that Manchester City now wholly regret their nonchalance in not replacing a key figure, more so a key figure in a key role? Unquestionably they do.

As for why they made such a nonchalant decision in the first place? Your guess is as good as mine.

Man Utd fans slam Anthony Martial after anonymous display against Bournemouth

After returning from an almost two-month injury lay-off against Liverpool, Anthony Martial announced his comeback to the Manchester United side with a series of impressive goal-scoring displays.

The France international netted the winner against Partizan Belgrade, and got on the score-sheet in the comfortable win against Norwich too. But against Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon in the Premier League, the 23-year-old didn’t look anywhere near best.

As per Sofascore, the forward had just one shot on target and 27 touches over the course of the 90 minutes, and finished with a match rating of 6.6 – the worst of any United player who completed the full game.

After seeing the Frenchman’s display, fans of the Manchester side flooded to Twitter to voice their thoughts about their number nine.

Many Red Devils supporters questioned his work ethic and insisted he simply doesn’t put in the hard yards to be a top-level striker for the club.

Man Utd fans stunned as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer plays down January signings

When you see your side languishing in tenth place in the Premier League, and with just 13 goals scored in 11 top-flight games, the last thing you probably want is for your manager to play down talk of possible new arrivals in the January transfer window.

Speaking ahead of the Europa League clash against Partizan Belgrade on Thursday night, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted that there may not be reinforcements in the winter, and that the “priority” is for them to get players returning from injuries.

He said (as quoted by The Evening Standard): “The priority now is to get players fit and get through to the next round. Transfers – we always look at the league table, look at players. There might be none, there might be one, might be two in January, but the summer window is the big one and you can’t do many good deals in January.”

After hearing Solskjaer appearing to downplay any potential excitement of some transfer market action in the January window, United fans flooded to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the situation.

Many supporters of the Manchester side felt the Norwegian is simply getting his excuses in early, and that they aren’t surprised by his mentality.

Manchester City: Fans react to Phil Foden celebration club post

It’s been two years since Phil Foden won the U17s World Cup with England, and Manchester City have put out a tribute for the youngster.

The teenager has been steadily nurtured into the City first team by manager Pep Guardiola, having more and more impact as his list of appearances for the Sky Blues grows.

Recently, Foden scored the second goal off the bench in City’s 2-0 Champions League win over Dinamo Zagreb – and going further back, buried the winner and only strike of the game in their crucial 1-0 league win at home to Tottenham back in late April.

It’s clear the 19-year-old has bags of potential and could be one of the Citizens’ future stars, with some touting him to be David Silva’s future replacement.

His list of accolades at such a young age is astonishing, currently holding the record for youngest ever player to win the Premier League along with a Young Sports Personality of the Year award – made even more impressive by his international achievements with England at junior level.

Marking his U17s World Cup final win in 2017, a match where Foden grabbed a brace, the club put out a celebratory post – and fans reacted with plenty of praise.

Here’s how the Sky Blues commemorated Foden’s special anniversary.
