Rangers predicted XI against Young Boys for first away trip in Europa League

Rangers continue their Europa League campaign with a trip to Switzerland tonight and will hope to beat Young Boys in an attempt to overtake Porto as leaders of group B.

Other than a 2-0 loss to Celtic the Gers have started the season in good form, remaining undefeated in their other 17 matches, dating back to July for the Europa League qualifiers.

Steven Gerrard is rightly in a confident mood, and believes his side can “hurt Young Boys”, a comment which brought much amusement on social media.

The team should be buoyed by the fact they have already equalled the amount of wins they picked up in last year’s group stage – one – with an assured performance over Feyenoord in which they had 20 shots, suggesting they are better-placed to qualify this time around.

However, a key factor in their early exit last term was their poor away form, failing to pick up a win in visits to Villareal, Spartak Moscow and Rapid Vienna – so tonight could prove troublesome.

Here is our predicted line-up for the visit to Young Boys.

Consistency has been key for the Glasgow outfit this season, and that is reflected by the fact eleven players have made 12 or more appearances so far, despite the often quick turnaround in matches.

With that in mind, it is unlikely Gerrard will make too many changes to the side which demolished Aberdeen 5-0 last weekend, although Glen Kamara could come back into the side after featuring in their last European fixture.

The 23-year-old should provide greater defensive cover in midfield than what Greg Stewart offers. From his 11 games this season he has averaged 2.7 tackles per game and 7.5 recoveries in the opposition half.

That highlights the energy he provides in midfield, which will be essential to combating Young Boys’ threat, particularly Jean-Pierre Nsame who has 12 goals in 14 appearances this term.

Going forward, the front three have been effective in most of the matches they have played this season, with 20 goals and nine assists between them.

Morelos will typically have the responsibility of putting away chances, but after his stunning winner against Feyenoord at Ibrox, Sheyi Ojo could have another key role to play.

If the winger can find his best form he should prove tricky to deal with, as his record of 4.2 successful dribbles attests to, and should he combine with Morelos to get Rangers firing, then they have a good chance of taking something from the match.

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith should have brought Trezeguet on earlier vs Burnley

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Off the Bench series, which places in-game managerial decisions and squad selections under FFC’s microscope.

Aston Villa slumped to another Premier League game without a victory as Burnley twice hit back to earn a point at Villa Park.

The game had its controversial moments, not for the first time this season, as VAR toyed with the heartstrings of the home faithful.

It was Anwar El Ghazi who opened the scoring for Villa, meeting Frederic Guilbert’s cross just after half an hour before former West Brom man Jay Rodriguez levelled things up with a powerful header in the second half.

John McGinn edged Villa in front after having a previous effort chalked off, but that lead lasted a matter of two minutes as Chris Wood equalised with another headed attempt.

Snapshot

With the game tied at 1-1 in the 70th minute and the home team lacking in attacking flair, recording just two shots on target, manager Dean Smith brought on summer signing Trezeguet to spark a change, and it paid off inside ten minutes.

The winger did well to create some space to put in a cross for McGinn to fire home as Villa took the lead on the 79th minute.

Off the Bench

During Trezeguet’s 20 minutes, he assisted a goal, put in three crosses and had a further six passes in the final third of the pitch, per WhoScored.

In addition to that, he was fouled three times, thus giving a chance to stick the ball into the box onto the head of either of their towering centre-backs, who are both above 6 foot 4.

It also suggests that the Egyptian was a significant threat in the final third and had Smith introduced him earlier, the game might have gone differently.

He recorded the same number of crosses that El Ghazi managed in double the time and two more than captain Jack Grealish on the other wing, via WhoScored.

If Trezeguet was on the pitch before the 70th-minute mark, he could have had a greater impact on the match as he would have been given more time to show his creative exploits.

It’s something that clearly had some sort of influence as he assisted the goal that regained his side the lead, albeit not for long.

Rangers’ Jermain Defoe reveals the one goal he wishes he’d scored

Jermain Defoe has scored some incredible goals throughout his career.

His volley against Newcastle for Sunderland back in 2015 will go down as one of the greatest strikes in Tyne-Wear derby history, and his incredible strike against Crystal Palace for Bournemouth earned him a Goal of the Month award.

The Rangers striker knows what it’s like to net a spectacular strike, but there’s one goal in Premier League history that he wishes he could have scored himself.

Indeed, Defoe wishes he could have netted Ian Wright’s legendary effort against Everton.

You can see why the former England international is such an admirer of the Arsenal man’s goal, as Wright uses an excellent combination of pace, skill and technique to beat his man, get into position and finally chip the keeper.

With Defoe topping the scoring charts in Scotland this season there’s no reason why he can’t emulate this goal over the coming months while playing for Rangers, and if he did it would certainly be a Goal of the Season contender.

Aston Villa’s Dean Smith names the two best goals scored since he took over

This week Aston Villa are celebrating the one year anniversary of Dean Smith’s appointment as their manager.

This has led to a lot of reflection on the past 12 months, and eventually, the question was put to the gaffer about which goal was his favourite since taking over.

Watch Aston Villa Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

The former Brentford boss had a lot to choose from as the Villans have scored 92 goals in 48 games since his appointment, but in the end, he decided on two strikes that he couldn’t quite choose between.

It should come as no surprise that one of Smith’s favourite goals was Alan Hutton’s incredible solo effort against Birmingham City.

The right-back uncharacteristically went on a marauding run from his own half before slotting past Lee Camp to put Villa 4-2 up against their fiercest rivals.

The other finish that Smith considered was Jack Grealish’s effort against Rotherham.

The Villa captain netted a fantastic strike against the Millers while the Villans were down to ten men, and Smith believes that his goal swung the game in his side’s favour.

West Ham fans praise Roberto’s performance against Everton

West Ham United were clearly outplayed by Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday.

The Toffees won 2-0 and, although they only had 4% more possession than their opponents, they still managed 10 shots on target to their opponents’ four. It is now four matches without a victory for the Hammers after their 2-0 win against Manchester United at the London Stadium.

Manuel Pellegrini and co were without Lukasz Fabianski due to injury, with the Poland international normally being the first-choice goalkeeper when available. He was replaced once again in the starting XI by Roberto, who has played in each of the last three league matches. He was kept very busy by Marco Silva’s men.

Surrounded by disappointing performances, it seems the 33-year-old Spaniard was one of the few who came out of the match with any respect in the eyes of the London outfit’s supporters. They took to Twitter to share their thoughts, and you can see some of the best comments from the social media platform below.

Manchester United only have one option when it comes to Allegri, pundits suggest

Former Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri is still a long way off becoming the next manager of Manchester United, but the move would “make sense,†according to ESPN pundit Julien Laurens. It’s got to that stage in the season again when the papers and pundits are talking about the future of United.Indeed, it doesn’t feel all that long ago that the likes of Gary Neville and friends were debating whether former coach Jose Mourinho should be sacked so early in the season. The 56-year-old was ousted from his post by the ever deluded Ed Woodward on December 18, 2018, and replaced by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who appeared at first to be the answer to the club’s problems.ÂHow could anyone forget about the clip of Rio Ferdinand getting a little too excited about Ole being ‘at the wheel’?

Fast forward 40 games, 20 wins, 8 draws, 12 losses and United’s worst start to a season in 30 years and we’re back to square one again.

Is United a “damaged brand”, as pundits from ESPN sports have suggested?

Tuttosport recently revealed that Ed Woodward is very close to bringing six-time Serie A winner Allegri to Old Trafford.

However, with a number of other top jobs potentially opening up around Europe, most of which are more appealing than the current wayward Old Trafford rebuild, Alejandro Moreno is probably justified in asking: “what manager in their right mind would go ‘yeah, I’m going to go in that direction even though there is no direction’?”

Shaka Hislop, too, echoed Moreno’s sentiment and said: “If somebody else, for argument’s sake, let’s say PSG decide we’ve had enough of Tuchel…and they join the race, PSG is the more likely destination.

“So you act now whilst he’s still available.”

Speaking to Polish outlet Prezglad Sportowy (via the Metro) Allegri apparently refused to rule out taking the job and said: ‘I speak English too poorly for now, but I am learning.’

Manchester United's 20 worst signings of the Premier League era

Manchester United have seen just five permanent managers since the formation of the Premier League in 1992 but plenty of players have come and gone.

It’s those that we’re going to be focussing on in this list as we whittle the many down to the few and look at the Red Devils’ 20 worst signings of the Premier League era.

Here we go…

Morgan Schneiderlin

First up is a midfielder who you may have forgotten even plied his trade at Old Trafford – current Everton and ex-France man Morgan Schneiderlin.

United tried to follow in the footsteps of their rivals Liverpool by poaching some talent from Southampton when they paid an eye-watering £25m for Schneiderlin in the Louis van Gaal era, but unlike the Sadio Manes and Virgil van Dijks, this Saints star was to flop at a much bigger side.

William Prunier

How could we leave Willian Prunier off this list?

When he was on the field Sir Alex Ferguson’s Red Devils would have been no worse off with an actual prune in central defence.

The former French international, somehow, is widely regarded as one of the worst players to ever ply his trade at “The Theatre of Dreams” and he’s now managing in France’s fifth tier.

Gabriel Obertan

Signing Gabriel Obertan for his all-star Old Trafford team and spending actual money on him too, at least they didn’t pay anything for on-loan Prunier, was hardly one of the Fergie’s masterstrokes – and it’s not the first time you will see the legend get his recruitment woefully wrong in this list.

The hapless winger Obertan made just 27 appearances in his four-year United career, scoring a mere one goal and only registering four assists, he did get a Premier League winners’ medal though.

Radamel Falcao

Radamel Falcao was hardly the first player to come to England with a huge reputation in European football and prove he’s not even near English top-flight standard, and he surely won’t be the last either.

Having scored bags of goals on the continent for the likes of Porto, Atletico Madrid and a resurgent Monaco team, the Colombian was given his big chance to shine in the Premier League on loan in Manchester for the 2014/2015 season.

Needless to say that he didn’t take it with the striker finding the back of the net on four occasions and he even got another opportunity with Chelsea the campaign after, to show everyone once again how below-par he is in England.

Zoran Tosic

The picture above rather sums up Zoran Tosic’s time in west Manchester – the Serbian was surrounded by some wonderful players such as Michael Owen, Paul Scholes, Rio Ferdinand and more and he was somewhat the odd one out.

This was because, like so many in this list, Tosic simply never had the ability to be a star at the world’s biggest club and that’s why he lasted only one term after joining from Partizan Belgrade in 2009.

Wilfried Zaha

Manchester United may well now regret letting go of Wilfried Zaha for well under £10m just four years go, however, this doesn’t take away from the fact that he wasn’t good enough for them.

£10.58m plus add-ons was a lot of money back in January 2013 and that’s exactly what David Moyes paid to capture him from Crystal Palace only for the Ivory Coast international to appear on four unmemorable occasions – now Zaha is once again knocking on the door of a move to a “Big Six” side having come on leaps and bounds since then.

Memphis Depay

Louis van Gaal should have been more cautious knowing how many attackers purchased from his native Netherlands have struggled to adapt in England after thriving over there.

Look up Dutch Premier League flops in the dictionary and Depay’s name will appear.

Massimo Taibi

Southampton’s Latvian striker Marian Pahars (L) scores past Manchester United’s Italian goalkeeper Massimo Taibi (R) as Dutch Manchester United team mate Jaap Stam (2L) looks on during their English premier league match at Old Trafford September 25.AS

Few members of this list have an iconic moment in a Man United shirt to their name, although we must confess Massimo Taibi’s is seminal for the wrong reasons.

Having impressed on his debut against Liverpool following replacing Peter Schmeichel in the summer of 1999, the Italian let Matt Le Tissier score with one of the tamest efforts in Premier League history against Southampton a game later and barely featured again – shocking.

Angel Di Maria

It’s hard to overlook our next United failure when it comes to the title of the biggest club-record signing dud in world football ever, Angel Di Maria.

To be fair to the Argentian though, he’s since shown his true quality at Paris Saint-Germain.

However, under the weight of a ridiculous £59.7m transfer from Real Madrid ahead of the 2014/2015 term, the Argentina great failed to make himself worthy of the famous Red Devils number seven shirt, providing little more than an eye-catching lob way at Leicester City.

Diego Forlan

A case of De Ja Vu here with Di Maria’s fellow South American Diego Forlan, a player that seemed to do extremely well at pretty much every club in his career apart from Man United.

Forlan was so bad at Old Trafford at times that it was laughable as he somehow managed to rack up close to a century of matches under Fergie who probably didn’t want to lose face after splashing out £6.9m on him, a large sum of money in 2002 football.

Liverpool icon Riise reacts to Robertson’s goal on Twitter

Andy Robertson finally scored for Liverpool on Wednesday evening. His strike against Red Bull Salzburg was only his second goal since joining the Anfield outfit.Watch Liverpool Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

That is a rather disappointing return for a left-back who gets forward so much, and Liverpool are a club who know all about goalscoring left-backs.

John Arne Riise was a classic example of a full-back who could find the back of the net, as he scored 31 goals for Liverpool during his time with the Reds.

The Norwegian took to Twitter after seeing Robertson score for the first time since the 2017/18 season, and he had one piece of criticism for the Scotland captain.

Riise was glad to see Robertson scoring, but he seemingly wasn’t too pleased about the manner of the goal.

The 39-year-old was renowned for his powerful long-range strikes while playing for Liverpool, and he seemed a bit disappointed by the fact Robertson hadn’t scored in the same fashion.

Hopefully, the Scot can start scoring on a more regular basis from here on out, and for Riise’s sake we hope he bangs in a screamer sooner rather than later.

Arsenal legend David Seaman criticises Emery despite 4-0 win

Sometimes you just can’t win as a football manager.Watch Arsenal Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Unai Emery’s side had one of their best performances of the season on Thursday, as Gabriel Martinelli looked extremely impressive and Kieran Tierney grabbed an assist.

However, David Seaman seemingly wasn’t happy with the former PSG boss’ decision to bring Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on in the 79th minute of their Europa League win.

The former goalkeeper was baffled by the manager’s switch, and you can kind of understand why.

The Gabonese striker is one of Arsenal’s most important players, so bringing him on for ten minutes when you’re already 4-0 up seems like a bit of an unnecessary injury risk.

Fortunately, the Gunners striker didn’t pick up a problem against Standard Liege, but he easily could have done, and if he had, Emery would have undoubtedly received even more criticism for making the substitution.

The Gunners now face a home clash against Bournemouth before the international break.
