– Joga o Tiago Reis. Vai ser o mesmo time.

Hendricks stars again as SA A square series

Beuran Hendricks’ maiden first-class ten-wicket haul helped South Africa A seal a comfortable 121-run win in the second unofficial Test against India A in Pretoria and square the two-match series. Hendricks ran through India’s top order to leave them in tatters at 18 for 5 by the 10th over. The target of 307 appeared beyond the horizon for India at that stage, though Ajinkya Rahane and Wriddhiman Saha hit half-centuries to give the visitors an outside chance. It was Hendricks’ match all through, however. He had picked up five wickets in the first innings and had removed M Vijay in his first over of the second innings on day three, and there was no let-off for India’s batsmen on the last day. Hendricks struck on his seventh ball of the day to dismiss Shahbaz Nadeem, the nightwatchman, and followed it up with the wicket of Dinesh Karthik two balls later. Ambati Rayudu became Hendricks’ ninth victim when he edged one to the wicketkeeper next over. That India lost their best batsman, Cheteshwar Pujara, to a run-out off the first ball of the day meant that the visitors had all but squandered the chase.Rahane and Saha redeemed the situation to some extent for India with a strong sixth-wicket stand of 160. The mammoth partnership was, however, bookended by two collapses, as none of the other batsmen were able to get into double-digit scores. The two batsmen took different approaches when they came together; Rahane did the bulk of the scoring, while Saha held on to his end. He was on 14 off 57 balls when Rahane reached his half-century off 67 deliveries. But Saha soon found relative fluency, driving two deliveries off a Simon Harmer over to the boundary. The partnership was about grind though – they reached the hundred off their partnership off 180 deliveries. It was Hendricks again who got past the defences of Rahane to trigger the second collapse as the last five wickets fell for eight runs. Harmer, who had picked up four wickets in the first innings, added three more to his tally towards the end.

Rogers back in the groove at Lord's

ScorecardChris Rogers was back churning out runs for Middlesex at Lord’s•Getty Images

Chris Rogers may have only made 21 runs for Australia in the Lord’s Test but nothing seems to disturb his serenity batting here for Middlesex. As some welcome September sun descended on the Home of Cricket, Rogers provided a reminder – if one were needed – that his game remains in fine working order ahead of the return Ashes series.Rogers didn’t play any particularly memorable shots, but then why would he need to? He has a method that works; his brain and body perfectly in sync as he goes about accumulating. But, rather like Justin Langer, Rogers may have the feel of a prodder but often has the strike-rate of a dasher. The 67 he has so far compiled here, off only 111 balls, are another case in point. His quick judgment of length means Rogers is able to score quickly without any discernible effort. With Sam Robson playing with the caution of a man who has not passed 30 in his last eight completed innings, Middlesex’s openers combined to suggest this game will be consigned to a draw. Only when Robson attempted a harum-scarum single did Nottinghamshire look like snaring a wicket. But, as rewarding as Rogers found his day with the bat, his day captaining must have been deeply frustrating. That two quick bowlers – James Harris and Gurjit Sandhu – both went for over 4.5 an over spoke of an attack lacking a little control. For Gareth Berg the problem was more one of luck: his seamers repeatedly passed the edge, including of Patel on several occasions, and he wasn’t flattered by figures of 2 for 78. On the sort of wicket that could be designed with producing a five-day Test in mind, how Middlesex would have benefited from the venom of Steven Finn. The result was that Notts added 269 runs in 60.4 overs – double the rate at which they had scored on the first day. But, for all the big names in their middle order, it was Andre Adams who provided the day’s biggest entertainment.Promoted above Chris Read in a bid to get Nottinghamshire to 350 in time to collect their fourth batting bonus point, Adams promptly backed away to leg and hoiked his first ball over long-on for six. There is no great subtlety to Adams’ batting but his death-or-glory approach was perfectly tailored to his side’s need. Five times the Lord’s boundary was made to look inadequate, until he was snared on the long-off boundary attempting a sixth maximum. But his work had long since been done: Adams had secured the fourth bonus point in the nick of time and, in taking Notts to 430 for 7 declared, to a position of apparent impregnability. After Steven Mullaney had advanced to a technically assured 125 – his second century of the season – Samit Patel and David Hussey both contributed perky knocks. Patel was playing with his customary languid assurance – a couple of straight drives elicited purrs of approval from the members – and it was a matter of considerable surprise when he fell to an outstanding slip catch from Ollie Rayner’s outstretched hand.Hussey had fallen short of his usual exemplary standards this season but made 67 that bristled with intent. It always seems a wonder, given all the travails of the Australian middle-order, that Hussey never earned a Test cap. He did earn 108 international appearances in the two shorter formats, and enjoyed the chance to bat in one-day mode here. By the end of the day, it was another Australia who was to the fore.

Narine banks on local experience

Sunil Narine hopes to draw from the experience of playing in the IPL to help Trinidad & Tobago succeed in the Champions League

Renaldo Matadeen17-Sep-2013West Indies and Kolkata Knight Riders spinner Sunil Narine hopes to draw from the experience of playing in the IPL to help Trinidad & Tobago succeed in the Champions League T20.Narine impressed in his maiden IPL season in 2012, picking up 24 wickets and finishing one behind the leading wicket-taker Morne Morkel, when Knight Riders won their only title. His consistency continued in the next season as he took 22 wickets.”Having played in India and learning a lot with Kolkata [Knight Riders] I think I can use the Indian conditions to my best ability,” Narine said. “Playing in the IPL is a plus I have and having won the T20 crown with West Indies last year, I think I’m equipped for this challenge.”Trinidad & Tobago’s first match is in Ranchi, which Narine believes to be advantageous. Ranchi was Kolkata’s second home venue during the IPL last year and the spinner has fond memories of the JSCA ground, having claimed a four-wicket haul against Royal Challengers Bangalore.”I have experience playing at Ranchi and have done well there. I think that I can share my knowledge with my team when it comes to the venue and also to some of the teams,” he said. “So far we have studied the teams that we are going to meet and the players have knowledge of them going in. We have the right crop for the title-run.”Brian Lara, who is traveling with T&T, said they could replicate their heroics from the inaugural Champions League in 2009, when they made the final.”We have a great chance. It’s a young team but there is experience in Denesh (Ramdin) and Sunil Narine, as well as (Ravi) Rampaul, so I can see us making the final four,” he said. “T20 is our kind of game and we’ve shown this as a country but also as a region.”T&T swept all their matches in the Caribbean T20 tournament, barring the opening game which was rained out, and beat Guyana by nine-wickets in the final, qualifying for the CLT20 directly for the first time this year.

Stafanie Taylor, who top-scored with a 36-ball 24, was then soon removed by medium-pacer Nicola Browne, leaving West Indies at 57 for 3, and needing 45 from a run a ball. The hosts tried to push on, but couldn’t recover from their top-order wobble, as the other batters could only add 35 in the remaining overs . A paltry 10 each from Kyshona Knight and Stacy-Ann King aside, no one else could produce more than six runs, as Candy and Ruck stifled West Indies’ middle and lower order to restrict them to 91 for 8 in 20 overs.New Zealand, electing to bat, were earlier helped largely by a 30-run partnership for the fifth wicket between Maddie Green and Rachel Priest, enabling them to recover from a loss of early wickets. Shaquana Quintyne, the leading wicket-taker of the the tournament, followed up her five-for in the previous game against England Women with two more wickets, dismissing Sophie Devine and Katie Perkins for her sixth and seventh scalps of the series. The visitors were precariously placed at 50 for 4 after 11.2 overs, but Priest added a late surge by blasting three fours and a six during her 17-ball 26, to help take New Zealand to 101.

Umpire's call denied to players, reveals Sutherland

The ICC decided against allowing teams to keep referrals denied on an umpire’s call out of fear the game would be slowed down too much, the Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland has revealed

The ICC decided against allowing teams to keep referrals that were denied on an umpire’s call out of fear the game would be slowed down too much, even as it approved the introduction of a DRS “top-up” after 80 overs, the Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland has revealed. As he discussed the fall-out from the Nine Network’s decision not to employ Hot Spot during this summer’s Ashes series, Sutherland said the equity of umpire’s call verdicts had been debated “long and hard” by the chief executive’s committee at the most recent ICC meeting. While Hot Spot’s effectiveness and use has been a point of contention since the Ashes Tests in England earlier this year, the loss of referrals to tight decisions that have stayed with the umpire’s original verdict created a similar level of discussion among players, spectators and administrators. Sutherland said it was still possible that such reviews would be handed back to the players, but admitted there was hesitance based on the possibility that the number of reviews may increase substantially.”We debated umpire’s call long and hard, and what was eventually decided was that they wanted to leave that pending for a little while,” Sutherland said. “We agreed to the top-up after 80 overs. That will come back on the agenda, and it’s not a bad idea. The ICC assessment is that if you don’t lose a review for umpire’s call, you will increase the number of referrals by at least double, and that will change the game. Everyone likes the idea of the referral being really valuable, and you need to think really carefully about using it, because it all comes back to the howler.”Sutherland denied that CA needed to step in to the stand-off between Nine and Hot Spot’s ringmaster Warren Brennan, and rejected the notion that Australian cricket’s governing body did not provide financial support in the way of other nations. He said that CA’s rights fees factored in the broadcast costs of Nine, whereas other nations paid for production in-house and then charged at higher odds for the rights themselves. “Indirectly we’re paying for it,” he said.”The first use of Hot Spot was all about broadcast enhancement. And in Australia that’s been something Nine have sponsored and dealt with and had discussions with Warren Brennan and his company in the past, they’ve had arrangements that they’ve used successfully. We’ve never been involved with those discussions and never needed to be. That continues to be a commercial negotiation between those two.”I’ve spoken with [Nine chief] David Gyngell about it, I know and understand from Nine’s viewpoint they’re not walking away from that and see it as an ongoing discussion. They certainly have concerns about Hot Spot in various ways, both commercially and in an operational capacity, and it’s something they will work through. They’ve been able to sort it out in the past, so let’s see if they can sort it out. This is still six weeks out from the series, it’s not a unique circumstance where Nine and Hot Spot have had discussions about broadcast enhancements.”Debates about DRS have ranged from whether the system should be used at all to which technology is most reliable and which system makes the best use of it. Sutherland saw a tension around the issue of how much accuracy should be demanded from technology that will always have a certain margin of error, no matter how small.”The biggest problem is what is your satisfaction level about imperfection,” he said. “We can all say ‘we know it’s not perfect’, but someone’s acceptance of imperfect might be here and another’s is 99.9%. That area of grey in between those two extremes is where this system gets into trouble. Not saying this is true, but as an example, do you accept the fact that if 80% of the time a nick will show on Hot Spot, but you know that 20% of the time it won’t – do you accept that or not?”

UAE push ahead on dramatic opening day

ScorecardA career-best haul for left-arm spinner Ahmed Raza and a half-century from Shaiman Anwar helped UAE push ahead of Namibia on the opening day of the Intercontinental Cup match that saw 15 wickets.Namibia, who chose to bat at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, were in trouble early on as debutant pacer Kamran Shazad struck in successive overs to dismiss opener Xander Pitchers and Stephan Baard. But from that point onwards, the innings belonged to Raza, whose dominance of the Namibia batting was reflected in his figures of 7 for 37 off 20.4 overs.Raza, introduced into the attack in the ninth over, bowled three maidens first-up and had debutant Michau de Preez caught behind for his first wicket. Bowling unchanged from one end for the rest of the Namibia innings, Raza induced a batting collapse that saw the visitors fold for 90.UAE were shaky at the start, too, as Namibia’s left-arm pacer JJ Smit struck off successive balls in the fifth over to dismiss Saqib Shah and Saqib Ali. UAE’s recovery was led by the in-form Shaiman Anwar who shared a 123-run third-wicket stand with Khurram Khan. Anwar scored a 90-ball 81, which included 10 fours and three sixes while Khurram played a more sedate 49 off 111 balls.Namibia tried out nine bowlers, including captain Raymond van Schoor, who temporarily gave up his wicketkeeping gloves to pitch in with three overs. The breakthrough, however, came from part-time offspinner Pitchers, who dismissed Anwar. Du Preez took the wicket of Khurram Khan with his legspin, while Smit got his third leg-before victim in Rohan Mustafa.
