Paul Merson has tipped Arsenal to easily beat Tottenham Hostpur in the north-London derby this weekend.

What he said

It was a difficult third matchday for both teams. Arsenal lost their first game of the season against Liverpool in an encounter during which they easily came out second-best, whilst Tottenham were surprisingly beaten 1-0 at home by Newcastle United.

With the Anfield outfit and Manchester City once again ahead of the rest of the top six, it looks like the Gunners and Spurs will be involved in the fight for the top four.

And Merson believes that Unai Emery’s men will easily overcome Mauricio Pochettino and co this weekend. He said on Sky Sports’ The Debate (via Metro) on Monday:

“They [Tottenham] were ripped at Man City.

“Okay they got a draw, but there are ways of getting draws, Man City had 30 shots.

“I think their confidence is shot as well. I watched them the other day against Newcastle, it was slow, they were 1-0 down and they were slow.

“I think Arsenal should expect to win this game, which is unreal, really. Tottenham will be well pleased with a draw, well pleased.

“I think Arsenal will win quite comfortably, 4-1. I think they will rip them to shreds.”

Won’t be that easy

Whilst Spurs were disappointing against the Toon and should not be losing those kind of games, especially at home, to say that Arsenal will win 4-1 is a bit of a stretch.

After all, there is an abundance of quality in the Tottenham squad, and with Heung-Min Son now having returned from suspension, they have one of their most influential players back in the side.

There is nothing to indicate that Arsenal should be that confident either. They defended poorly against the Reds and did not create much throughout the match. David Luiz failed to cover himself in glory after conceding a penalty and allowing Mohamed Salah through on goal, and will have his work cut out to stop the likes of Son, Harry Kane, Lucas Moura and Giovani Lo Celso at the Emirates Stadium.

Only once since 2012 has either team scored score four or more in this fixture and although that was last season, the two sides look relatively evenly matched heading into the weekend.

Lots of Newcastle fans have been discussing a selection dilemma facing Steve Bruce, and it seems the Toon Army favour Javier Manquillo over DeAndre Yedlin.

Reports in France claim the Magpies are close to snapping up Sweden international right-back Emil Krafth as their fourth summer signing, but until that happens Yedlin and Manquillo are the only options in the position.

Yedlin offers excellent pace and athleticism, and perhaps boasts the higher ceiling as well, but Manquillo is a sturdier presence in the back line.

Last term, the American started 28 Premier League games, scoring once and assisting twice, while averaging 1.9 tackles, 1 interception and 2.4 clearances per game.

Manquillo meanwhile only started 12 league fixtures, with six substitute appearances skewing his stats in the wrong direction, but he did rack up three assists nonetheless, averaging 1.5 tackles, 0.9 interceptions and 2.7 clearances each game.

And while Yedlin is certainly the ‘sexier’ pick, fans are leaning towards Manquillo, favouring the Spaniard’s defensive solidity over Yedlin, who can be reckless at times.

Nemanja Matic is certainly not your average goalscorer.

The 31-year-old veteran midfielder has many qualities but he was never really known for his lethal finishing.

He arrived at Manchester United from Chelsea in 2017 and has since then played a total of 87 games, scoring or assisting only three goals in the process.

By all accounts, that is not really an impressive tally but then again, his role is simply not to score that many goals.

But that doesn’t mean he’s unable to do so. And when he actually does score, there’s a good chance it will be a screamer.

He even dubbed the goal his favourite in the Manchester United shirt so far.

Raheem Sterling scored a hat-trick as Manchester City recorded a 5-0 win over West Ham United on the opening weekend of the 2019-20 Premier League season.

It was yet another terrific performance from the 24-year-old, who has now netted four times in two appearances this term following his effort against Liverpool in the Community Shield last weekend.

Sterling scored 25 goals and provided 18 assists in 51 appearances in all competitions for Pep Guardiola’s side during the 2018-19 campaign.

But he looks capable of beating that total this time around.

And a number of Manchester United fans have taken to social media to comment on the England international.

Despite the immense rivalry between the two teams, the United supporters cannot help but appreciate the player that Sterling has become under Guardiola.

Aston Villa announced the signing of goalkeeper Tom Heaton on Thursday morning, an addition that was their 12th of the summer in what has been an extremely busy window for the Villans.

Heaton has signed for a reported £8m and will add a wealth of experience to their goalkeeping department at the age of 33.

However, in the build-up to the deal being completed, Villa fans were discussing which goalkeeper should leave as a result with the consensus being that Lovre Kalinic was the man who should head elsewhere.

Two fans claimed that he was worth the most and should be shipped out as one stated that because he was Croatia’s national ‘keeper, he wouldn’t want to be a back-up.

A further supporter claimed Kalinic was still good but as a result of the Burnley man joining, he should be loaned out. Another individual hinted that the Croat should be the one to go as he hadn’t worked out.

The 29-year-old spent a period out through injury last term and as a result, only played seven times in the Championship.

Jed Steer’s form towards the back end of last season, coupled with the fact Heaton has arrived means he could well be third choice under Dean Smith.

Loads of Newcastle fans have been reacting to some transfer news on a former player, as Kenedy is reportedly set to join Championship outfit Reading.

Talk Reading claim the Royals are set to secure the capture of the Chelsea winger on loan, before Thursday’s transfer deadline.

Mark Douglas, publishing editor for The Chronicle, has added validity to the report, claiming that the Magpies were quoted at £30m to sign the youngster permanently last summer, while Oliver Harbord of Football.London has also seemingly confirmed the move is on, calling it a “strange move”.

The young Blue spent 18 months on loan on Tyneside, impressing in his first temporary stay before completely going off the boil last season, registering just one goal and one assist in 25 league appearances.

With all due respect to Reading, being quoted to Premier League teams at a whopping £30m is quite a height to fall to last season’s twentieth-best team in the Championship from, and the Toon Army are sad to hear of the 23 year-old’s fate.

Maybe he will rediscover his spark without the pressure of the top-flight, but the Twitter reactions down below are disappointed in their former loanee…

West Ham United fans have hailed defender James Collins on his birthday.

The Hammers’ official Twitter account wished the defender many happy returns on Friday as he turned 36.

Collins spent four years in east London between 2005 and 2009 and returned in 2012, staying at the club until 2018, when he left to join Ipswich Town.

He is currently without a club but, in total, he made 214 appearances for the Irons at centre-back, scoring an impressive nine goals.

And a number of fans have taken to Twitter to hail the Welshman, who also won 50 caps for his country throughout his career.

Indeed, the Hammers have struggled at the beginning of the season under Manuel Pellegrini, losing 5-0 to Manchester City on the opening weekend and drawing 1-1 with Brighton & Hove Albion last time out.

Sheffield Wednesday head into the international break with quite the dilemma if reports are to be believed.

On Tuesday evening, Sky Sports claimed the club were in advanced talks with Lincoln City boss Danny Cowley and his assistant, brother Nicky, over becoming their permanent manager.

Currently, the club have had Lee Bullen in caretaker charge for a third spell after Steve Bruce left on the eve of the new season last month.

Earlier in the week, Tony Pulis had been linked to the job by The Sun, but it appears that Cowley could be a serious contender to the post.

The 40-year-old rejected a move to Huddersfield in order to continue his journey at the Imps, so it remains to be seen whether or not he will actually become the Owls’ new boss.

This is how Wednesday could lineup under Cowley:

In four years at the club, the Cowley’s have guided Lincoln to two promotions as well as an EFL Trophy – playing very much the same brand of football throughout.

They believe in their philosophy and stick to it.

The formation most used by the management team is a 4-4-1-1 which utilises a lone target man in attack with a deep-lying forward playing just off him, and it is something that the Owls do have at their disposal with both Steven Fletcher and Fernando Forestieri being able to occupy those two spots.

Cowley also likes his team to play out from the back so it could see Sam Hutchinson drop into defence having played in midfield this season because he averages a passing success rate of 83.5% which is higher than Tom Lees (72.8%), whilst Julian Borner is likely to play alongside him (83.7%).

Jacob Murphy can play the inside forward role on the left-flank, averaging 2.2 shots per game as well as 2.6 dribbles, per WhoScored. He’s also scored one goal in four starts this season.

On the other side, Adam Reach can become the more traditional winger, whipping in crosses for the target man – he averages 0.8 per game and has already recorded one assist this season.

It would appear that Wednesday have all the tools needed to suit a Cowley system, meaning the lack of a transfer window shouldn’t be too much of an issue. It’s just if he can make the next step up, a considerable step up at that.
