Man United’s transfer strategy key to rebuilding a club in need of rejuvenation

[ad_pod ]

In August 1995 Alan Hansen famously proclaimed on Match of the Day ‘you can’t win anything with kids’, referencing Sir Alex Ferguson’s youthful Manchester United side. By the conclusion of the season, United had completed the double by winning the Premier League and FA Cup. The United faithful will be hoping for similar fortunes in the upcoming campaign as Ole Gunnar Solskjær looks to rebuild his squad with a notable emphasis on young and emerging, ideally British talents.

Reportedly, it’s young, aspiring players with considerable potential that Solskjær will target this window. While onlookers will rightly question whether these young talents have the necessary quality to make an immediate impact at a club of United’s standing, the move towards young, hungry and determined players is a smart one for the Old Trafford outfit.

The acquisition of Daniel James from Swansea City could be the first of many promising players who will move to United this summer. Despite only attaining 39 senior appearances at club level, there should be considerable excitement around the 21-year-old’s signing after finishing last season with four goals and nine assists to his name in the Championship.

The Wales international will provide United with an abundance of creativity and a frightening degree of pace. Most crucially, the winger is willing to attack directly and he doesn’t shy from one-on-one situations. A total of 13 league goal contributions in his first full season of senior football is a commendable tally and surrounded by higher quality at United, one can envisage James contributing purposefully to their cause.

If United are to restore former glory and attempt to derail their neighbours’ domestic dominance, they need talented, resilient and industrious players. Generally, young players are more prepared to work for the collective good of the team as they’re yet to demonstrate their significance or earn their positions, particularly at clubs placed in the upper echelons of football.

If the theory proves fruitful, signing young players could be the most effective way of restoring desire and fight at the club, fortifying connections with disenchanted supporters and ending an era which has been largely defined by superstar signings of questionable success, from Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao to Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku. Di Maria and Falcao lasted just the one season, while Lukaku and Pogba could both leave before the summer’s over.

Another youngster who has interested the United hierarchy is West Ham United’s Issa Diop. The Telegraph report that the Hammers have set a £75m price tag to thwart the Red Devils’ interest. United’s need for defensive recruitment should be their foremost concern this summer; they only conceded a goal fewer (54) than West Ham’s total (55) in the league last term – a clear indication of weaknesses at the back.

Diop is a commanding presence thanks to his height and imposing stature. The Frenchman demonstrates excellent defensive awareness, is physically dominant and decent on the ball with an 86% pass completion rate last season. While the 22-year-old is a far cry from the esteemed names that United are typically linked with, he would add much-needed resolve to a frail and fleeting defensive unit.

According to Manchester Evening News. Newcastle United’s Sean Longstaff is among United’s desired midfield shortlist. Again, superficially, Longstaff wouldn’t be one of the most inspiring signings of the summer, but to focus solely on players’ reputations would negate the club’s vision and shift towards long-term acquisitions.

The 21-year-old’s lack of top-level experience with only nine Premier League games under his belt is a legitimate concern; Diop has already experienced a season of Premier League action, while James has attained four international caps. However, Longstaff showed promise in his outings for the Magpies, averaging 1.9 tackles and 1.1 interceptions per game while doing a great job of orchestrating possession.

His passing ability is an obvious strength, and for someone of his limited experience on the biggest stage, he reads the game well – already earning comparisons to Michael Carrick. Given Ander Herrera’s departure, United need a midfielder who can fuse creativity and tenacity and Longstaff certainly fits the bill.

Eric Dier is another possible target for United to pursue, as Team Talk report that United are interested in signing the midfielder. While slightly older than other reported targets, he does come with a good blend of age and experience. At 25, Dier has made 40 appearances for England and featured in Premier League and Champions League title hunts.

A host of unfulfilled managerial appointments aligned with pragmatic and mundane football has led to the dereliction of United’s formerly revered footballing identity. The playing style has disappeared and their approach in the transfer market has been scatter-gun.

Turning towards promising young footballers in conjunction with a fresh approach could breathe renewed life into a club desperately requiring rejuvenation. United’s pride is hurt; their dominance of yesteryear defeated; the need for reinvention is urgent.

Their recruitment is strategy is undoubtedly a risk, but the acquisition of young players could set the foundations for the development of a new identity and the building blocks for prospective success. After all, perhaps United will prove once again that you can win something with kids and make Hansen eat his words for a second time.

Liverpool star Mo Salah posts Instagram picture in pre-pre-season

[ad_pod ]

Mohamed Salah is yet to rejoin the Liverpool squad on their pre-season tour.

The Egyptian winger has had no time to rest this summer as his national team took part in the African Cup of Nations.

But unfortunately, one of the favourites to win the competition were humbled by South Africa and they were knocked out in the round-of-16 clash, a result that shook Egypt to the core.

Still, despite that heartbreaking defeat, Salah seems to be in good spirits and recovering for his big Liverpool return ahead of another huge season for the Reds.

He posted an

It seems that his teammates are eager for his return as Dejan Lovren replied saying “ple-ple-please return”.

Georginio Wijnaldum was also on the scene and he just posted a series of muscle emojis for his friend.

After playing in the World Cup last summer and now the AFCON in the 2019 summer break, Liverpool fans may be concerned that Salah could suffer from burnout.

Only time will tell if he can continue to light up Anfield and inspire the Reds to another title challenge.

Manchester United: Red Devils looking to replace Romelu Lukaku with Moussa Dembele

Olympique Lyonnais star Moussa Dembele will be on Manchester United’s shortlist of centre-forwards should Romelu Lukaku leave for Internazionale, according to Sky Sports News.

[ad_pod ]

United are willing to sell Lukaku, however, after rejecting a £54m bid from Inter, are waiting for the right price.

Talks between Inter and the Old Trafford giants have reached a stalemate, with the Italian club wary they must meet financial fair play rules to move for the Belgian forward.

Dembele is seen as a centre-forward as opposed to Nicolas Pepe, who the club have also been linked with, who is seen as a winger.

Links with Dembele would make sense, given the realism over signing the forward as opposed to other targets. Earlier in the summer’s transfer window, Manchester United were linked with a move for Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The links were shot down immediately with Unai Emery saying he won’t be willing to sell the striker.

You can see why Manchester United would put Dembele on their shortlist for strikers to sign after the last few seasons the France youth international has had. In the past three seasons, Dembele has scored a massive 71 goals in all competitions for both Celtic and Lyon.

Looking at the current lack of forwards in the transfer market, you could argue that Dembele represents both the most realistic and best option for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

As mentioned above, any deal for Aubameyang has already been shot down.

So we come back full circle to Dembele, and after looking at his goalscoring record in two different leagues in Europe, he looks to be the natural goalscorer who can fill the potential void left by Lukaku.

Manchester United fans, would Dembele be a good replacement for Lukaku? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below!

Everton fans baffled by links to Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney

[ad_pod ]

Lots of Everton fans on Twitter are baffled by links to Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney, after the Herald Scotland ran a story stating that the Toffees are amongst a number of clubs interested in the defender.

Arsenal have just seen a £15m bid rejected for the Scottish international but are optimistic that a deal can be struck with the Bhoys, however Everton fans are right to be left confused over why they’d want to sign the 22-year-old.

The fans in the video below had some very strong words for Michel Platini who was detained over alleged corruption this week…

Marco Silva’s side already have Lucas Digne who they signed for £18m just last summer, and the Frenchman even won their Player of the Season award after his debut campaign at Goodison Park.

Additionally, back-up option Leighton Baines has just signed a new 12-month extension to his contract that was set to expire at the end of the month; quite why Everton would need another left-back, especially for a reported price tag of £25m, makes no sense whatsoever.

That is a sentiment that has been echoed in the Everton supporters’ reaction to the news on Twitter…

Mills misreads Pochettino after Clarke claim

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Danny Mills believes Leeds United youngster Jack Clarke will be making a mistake if he joins Tottenham Hotspur this summer, per Sky Sports.

What’s he said?

Watch Tottenham Hotspur Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Clarke is poised to complete a move from the Championship club to north London, with Sky Sports claiming he has already undergone a medical.

However, Mills, who played for Leeds between 1999 and 2004, is not sure that the move is the correct one for the 18-year-old, who made just four starts in the Championship in 2018/19.

Indeed, he believes that the teenager’s development would be best served by playing regularly, something that is not at all guaranteed in north London.

He said: “You have to say if a player is that good at 18-19 years old, whoever you are, you have had more starts for a Championship side.

“You’re coming off the bench and it’s easier to pick the ball up and run at people, why has Bielsa said ‘you are not worthy of more starts?’

“I actually think it’s the wrong move, is he going to be in the Tottenham team next season? No chance.”

Developer of talent

Mauricio Pochettino gives youth a chance.

The likes of Harry Winks, Dele Alli and Juan Foyth have all thrived under the Argentine’s management and one has to feel that Mills is simply ignoring his track record.

Add the transfer fee, which Sky Sports claim could total more than £8m, and it becomes apparent that Spurs value Clarke, a player who has had just one full season in senior professional football, incredibly highly.

The London Evening Standard have even reported that the teenager is to be given the opportunity to work his way into the starting XI in 2019/20.

There can be no higher compliment and these comments could well backfire on Mills.

Purslow’s comments would no longer make sense if Aston Villa sign Webster

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to The Mirror (June 27, page 65), Aston Villa are set to make an improved bid for defender Adam Webster.

What’s the word?

Last season’s transfer saga at Villa revolved around Jack Grealish who eventually committed his future to the club after initially attracting a bid from Tottenham.

However, this summer’s saga seems to be forming around a potential incoming, rather than a possible departure.

The Sun reported Villa’s interest in Webster at the start of the month before the club followed that up with a £12m bid, only for it to be rejected.

Yet, the print version of The Mirror has now reported that they’re looking to make an improved bid for the Bristol City man.

Purslow’s comments could come back to bite him

Bristol Live reported earlier this week that Bristol City were looking for a massive £30m for the 24-year-old.

On the face of it, paying that fee for a player who has never played in the Premier League would be particularly strange.

Webster is hugely impressive in the air, better than Tyrone Mings, in fact, which is something we’ve already detailed. But if Villa are to sustain themselves in the top-flight it would be a mistake to ramp up their efforts after having an initial £12m bid knocked back.

CEO Christian Purslow told BBC Sport last month when speaking about transfers: “This is when poorly run businesses and clubs make mistakes. This is the time to pause, apply a cold towel and contemplate carefully exactly what we need to do.”

The centre-back may well be a top target but you can’t help but feel like improving their bid would be a mistake and would go against what Purslow has said.

In this situation, Villa must pause and contemplate carefully whether they need to spend that much on a central defender.

The club does need to add bodies in that area of the pitch but by improving on their previous bid, it would be questionable decision making.

You only need to look at what happened to Fulham last season. They spent over £100m, mostly on unproven Premier League talent, and they ended up getting relegated.

Villa, therefore, must be careful in their approach and ensure they don’t make a mistake on this transfer.

If they do, it could come back to bite Purslow and the club.

Manchester United stars Mata and Matic reply to Rojo’s Instagram snap

[ad_pod ]

And with the game against Tottenham Hotspur out of the way, Manchester United wave their goodbyes to Shanghai and gear up for the next challenges that await.

The new 2019/20 Premier League season starts in early August and is practically around the corner.

The Red Devils have a tough fixture ahead of them since they have to welcome Chelsea at Old Trafford.

Still, the squad seems to be in very good spirits as they approach the final stretch of their preparations.

Marcos Rojo posted a final

/B0TONx8gq_M/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link” data-lasso->Instagram update from the training grounds in the eastern land as the team squared off in a friendly training match in the facilities.

The snap depicted what seems to be the winning team and Rojo captioned it as “final training session in China” and also stated that this was the team that won in training, “as it should be”.

Of course, not everyone has taken lightly to this friendly banter as Angel Gomes showed his dissatisfaction with a series of emojis.

Juan Mata and Nemanja Matic, on the other hand, were quite happy to be the winners and Mata even called Rojo the MVP for the goal he scored.

Manchester United fans react as Axel Tuanzebe set to sign new deal

[ad_pod ]

Having conceded 54 goals in the Premier League last season, it’s been no surprise to see Ole Gunnar Solskjaer look far and wide for some defensive reinforcements to his creaking Manchester United back-line.

Reports in recent weeks have suggested the Red Devils are intent on pushing through a mammoth deal for Leicester’s Harry Maguire, but one man within the club who has seemingly flown under the radar has been Axel Tuanzebe.

The 21-year-old centre-back spent last season on loan at Aston Villa in the Championship and it had been claimed that Dean Smith’s side were very much interested in bringing him back to Villa Park.

However, an update from The Daily Mail has now revealed United boss Solskjaer is keen on giving Tuanzebe the chance to shine at Old Trafford and will be handed a fresh new deal.

After hearing the news, fans of the Manchester side took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the decision and many were understandably excited.

United supporters revealed that they were relieved Tuanzebe was finally going to be given the opportunity to prove his worth and declared that they were even happier at hearing how he would be taken on the club’s pre-season tour.
