Wolves vs Arsenal preview: team news, form, how to watch

Wolverhampton Wanderers take on Arsenal at Molineux on Saturday in an important battle between two sides battling for a place in European competition next season.

Following their 1-0 win over Aston Villa on Saturday, Wolves are sat sixth in the table, just three points adrift of third-place Leicester City and only two points off the top four.

Arsenal are a further six points back, but will still retain faint hopes of Champions League qualification, provided they win most of their games between now and the end of the season.

The Gunners have struggled in recent matches against the Midlands side and lost 3-1 at Molineux last season, while the two sides drew 1-1 in the reverse fixture at the Emirates Stadium.

Form

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are one of the form outfits in the Premier League and have picked up five wins from their last six matches.

However, they have tended to be better on the road in recent matches and have only picked up two wins from their last six fixtures at Molineux.

Arsenal have also been in strong form, picking up four wins from their last six Premier League fixtures, as well as earning three consecutive wins in all competitions, including Wednesday’s 4-0 win against Norwich City.

However, they continue to struggle away from home and have earned just six points from a possible 18 available during their last six away league matches.

Team news

Wolves do not currently have any injury concerns, although Espirito Santo could look to shuffle his pack as part of a busy post-lockdown schedule.

Adama Traore started on the bench last weekend against Aston Villa and will surely be a candidate to come in against Arsenal.

The Gunners will be without long-term absentees Gabriel Martinelli, Calum Chambers, Bernd Leno and Pablo Mari, but Mesut Ozil and Lucas Torreira are closing in on a return.

Matteo Guendouzi is fit but appears to be out of favour with Mikel Arteta, although the Spaniard is likely to rotate following the comfortable win over Norwich.

How to watch

This match is one of five set to played in the Premier League on Saturday and kicks off at Molineux at 17:30 UTC.

The game will be broadcast on TV on BT Sport, while fans can key enjoy the game via live stream football.

Rangers: Fans love Graeme Souness video

Graeme Souness is something of a Rangers legend.

The Scot joined in 1986, taking up a player-manager role, and would end up spending five years at the club. It is mainly in the dug-out where he is most remembered though – he won the league cup five times and the league four times overall (one of each as a player/manager), helping the Ibrox outfit to dominate football during that time north of the border.

Still, there remained some fantastic moments on the pitch itself for the former Liverpool boss, one of which came against Aberdeen in 1986. He scored his first goal for the club with a fantastic effort from outside the box that gave the opposition goalkeeper no chance – Sir Alex Ferguson was still manager of the Dons at the time.

The clip of his strike has been shared by Rangers’ official Twitter account as it happened 34 years ago on Tuesday. The fans of the Glasgow club have clearly enjoyed the video – one fan even called him a “hero” – as you can see by some of the best comments from the social media platform below.

Manchester City: Txiki Begiristain makes enquiries to Barcelona about Sergi Roberto

Manchester City have reportedly made a move towards trying to sign Sergi Roberto from Barcelona, according to reports from Spain.

Mundo Deportivo claimed that director of football Txiki Begiristain has made enquiries to the La Liga club about the 28-year-old, with the approval of City manager Pep Guardiola, under whom the versatile Spain international has previously played at Camp Nou.

Roberto, who is valued at £36m by TransferMarkt and has won two Champions League titles with Barcelona, has the vast experience of playing 273 times for the La Liga champions, with 29 of those games coming this season as he has been a regular presence in their starting XI (as per TransferMarkt).

A midfielder by trade, the 28-year-old has been deployed mainly at right-back in recent months – coincidentally the position in which Nelson Semedo, who has also been linked with Manchester City (Sport, via Sport Witness), regularly features.

Roberto has an excellent passing success rate of 91.2%, which puts him ahead of Guardiola’s current right-backs Joao Cancelo (89.4%) and Kyle Walker (88.9%) in that regard. He also wins more tackles per game than the Englishman (1.2 to one), while they both average one interception per game.

However, Cancelo has a far better tackling average with 2.3 per game and also makes more interceptions per match with 1.4. Additionally, the Etihad Stadium duo have far greater attacking instincts than the Barcelona man. Roberto’s match averages of 0.2 shots and 0.5 successful dribbles pale in comparison with the respective figures put up by Cancelo (0.7 shots, 1.6 successful dribbles) and Walker (0.6 shots, 0.9 successful dribbles).

While Roberto would present Guardiola with a versatile option at right-back and central midfield, he does not seem an upgrade on the current right-sided defensive pair of Walker and Cancelo. Indeed, the latter has been reportedly considered as bait in a potential swap deal with Semedo (Mundo Deportivo, via Sport Witness), which seems difficult to comprehend given Cancelo’s more than respectable statistics from this season.

At £36m, 28 years of age and in a position where Manchester City are already well stocked, the Premier League champions ought to be looking elsewhere to bolster their squad over the summer.

Loads of Spurs fans react to Alasdair Gold tweet

Tottenham Hotspur fans have been reacting in the masses to a tweet from Football.London reporter Alasdair Gold after he relayed an Instagram post from Tanguy Ndombele to Twitter.

The matter in question is actually over the future of the £55m club-record signing despite only joining the club in the summer, and Ndombele has taken steps to cool the reported interest in him by posting a highlights reel from his season so far with the translated caption – ‘nothing to report.’

Gold, a reliable Spurs journalist, has seen many a fan in his replies offering their opinions on the Frenchman, who has become a polarising figure amongst the north London support.

Ndombele has featured in 27 matches this season, scoring twice whilst also providing four assists in all competitions – and that’s even when averaging a mere 51 minutes per game, via Transfermarkt.

Money talks: How much did Levy pay for each of these Spurs stars?

Barcelona are the team courting his services, according to Sky Sports, but this message has certainly played down such links.

Here’s what supporters have been saying…

AND in other news, Spurs would be foolish to offer a new deal to Pochettino signing…

Phillips claims money may tempt Pochettino to join Newcastle

Kevin Phillips has said that the money on offer at Newcastle United could be enough to tempt Mauricio Pochettino, in an interview with Football Insider.

What did he say?

According to Sky Sports, the prospective owner of Newcastle have already lined up the former Tottenham Hotspur boss as their number one target to take over as manager.

The Argentine has been out of work since November when he was fired by Spurs, although he remains a sought after coach given what he achieved in North London.

Asked whether the 48-year-old would be tempted, former Sunderland striker Phillips said the money would prove hard to turn down, but that he expected Pochettino to want to challenge for trophies.

“It is no surprise when owners have come in with the sort of wealth that we are talking about,” he told Football Insider.

“Why not aim for the best? Pochettino is a good manager but he never won anything at Tottenham. I think it will take a couple of years, if everything goes right for Newcastle, for them to be challenging.

“Pochettino will be interested, for £19million a year, that can be hard to turn down.

“I am sure it is not all about the money for him though, he will want to win stuff and I think he will want to be challenging straight away at his next club.”

Matching ambition

Pochettino is clearly an ambitious man and he very nearly achieved some of those targets at Spurs, finishing second in the Premier League and reaching a Champions League final.

However, he is yet to win a trophy as a manager and it is likely that will be one of his key aims when considering his next move.

If he is to move to St James’ Park, he would likely need plenty of assurances and it will also depend on what other jobs come available.

Newcastle fans loving what Steve Bruce has said about takeover

Whilst Newcastle’s proposed takeover has of course surrounded those higher up in the food chain at St James’ Park, that doesn’t mean to say the likes of the manager and players haven’t been affected by it.

And as per his comments ahead of the FA Cup clash against Manchester City, Magpies boss Steve Bruce has seemingly had enough of all the waiting around to see whether the Saudi consortium’s bid will finally be approved by the Premier League.

Think you’re a big Magpies fan? Can you name these former players by looking at their careers? Go on, give it a go…

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, he said (as quoted by The Daily Mirror): “Like all of us we are still waiting. I think all of us feel this decision has to be made. It just seems to have become tedious. It’s been going to be this week, it’s going to be due in days, it’s going to be in 48 hours. We need the people who are making the decisions to make that decision. We need them to make it. And be quick about it.”

And after hearing what Bruce had to say, Newcastle fans flooded to Twitter to share their reactions.

A few Newcastle fans lauded Bruce for speaking up and “saying it how it is”, with a couple of supporters in particular voicing their frustrations with the Premier League, labeling it as “disgraceful”.

One Magpies fan admitted that whilst he isn’t Bruce’s “biggest fan”, he appreciates the Newcastle boss’ outspoken comments and claimed it showed “he’s on side and has the fans’ interest”.

It’s fair to say Bruce is unimpressed with the amount of time it’s taking for the green light to be given for Newcastle’s takeover.

And it’s completely understandable too. Whilst this season is still yet to be finished, Bruce will be keen on looking ahead to the next campaign and making decisions on who to get rid of, and who to sign.

But with all this uncertainty hovering above the club, those kinds of important calls just cannot be made at the moment. It’s no surprise to see so many Magpies fans on board with what the manager had to say.

Tottenham Hotspur: Paul Robinson insists wonderkid should stay at Spurs

Paul Robinson has urged Troy Parrott to stay at Tottenham Hotspur and learn from fellow striker Harry Kane, in an exclusive with Football Insider.

After arriving at Spurs from Belvedere FC for an undisclosed fee in July 2017, Parrott is spending his second season with the Lilywhites. He has bagged 6 goals and produced 1 assist in just 4 games in the UEFA Youth League, but despite injuries to both Kane and Son Heung-min, the teenager is yet to make a start all season.

In fact, Jose Mourinho’s side have been playing without a recognised striker since February.

However, Robinson stressed the 18-year-old should remain in London to capitalise on any opportunities that may come his way throughout the course of next season.

Speaking to Dylan Childs, the veteran goalkeeper said: “If the club thinks sending him out on loan will benefit him, he would certainly command a loan to a Premier League side or a top Championship side.

“At Spurs, there is the potential for him to play cup games. Being in and around the squad he can learn from Harry Kane.  Subconsciously you pick up all of his traits, his habits, and his finishing if you work with him in training. You mould yourself without even knowing it.

“It is important to get football but with injuries and suspensions, he might get two or three games and score a bagful. We saw it with Rashford. Football is all about timing. If he is out on loan they cannot recall him.”

All things considered, it is difficult to disagree with the former England international here.

Understandably, given his track record, lots of supporters have been begging for Parrott to get the chance to prove himself, and crowds all around the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium rose to their feet when he came on in extra-time in the FA Cup fifth-round defeat to Norwich City. Although the youngster didn’t lack the courage to take a spot-kick in the penalty shootout, sadly his attempt on goal was saved (BBC).

It is fair to say his teammate Harry Kane is quite a dead-ball-specialist, having buried 37 penalties and only missed 7 in all competitions in his career so far.

While it would be easy to ship the starlet out to a lower league, if Parrott does stay in the English capital, not only will he be able to pick up finishing tips and tricks from the England captain during first-team training, he will become more ingrained with the Tottenham backroom staff and therefore develop a greater understanding of Mourinho’s methodology.

In contrast, he would potentially have to start all over again once he returned to his parent club after a loan spell with another side.

The Irishman signed a new contract earlier this year, and it remains to be seen whether or not he will heed Robinson’s advice, or head out on loan in the coming months.
