Bangladesh bank on form, momentum ahead of ODIs

Mushfiqur Rahim's break in doubt due to Australia series quarantine rules

Rahim played the one-off Test in Harare last week but, having injured his hand while batting, stayed off the field for most of the game. He was also initially supposed to skip the T20I series after the board granted him leave. He wasn’t named in the T20I squad against Zimbabwe but on Tuesday, chief selector Minhajul Abedin had said Rahim could be among the ODI squad players to stay back for the T20Is due to quarantine rules for the upcoming T20I series against Australia at home. The BCB and CA have agreed that everyone involved in the series must be in quarantine for ten days prior to entering the tour’s bio-bubble in Dhaka. As such, the selectors wanted Rahim and another player to be part of the bio-bubble in Harare, which is being considered as part of the ten-day quarantine.

Newcastle now considering using the Guehi money on £100m+ Bruno successor

Newcastle United are now believed to be considering using the Marc Guehi money to sign a £100m-rated midfielder, according to a recent transfer update.

Newcastle transfer news

The summer transfer window may now be closed, meaning the Magpies can't make new signings until January, but that isn't stopping Paul Mitchell and Co from getting their ducks in a row for 2025, identifying targets after what many fans believed to be a disastrous summer window.

One such figure is Kevin Zenon, with Newcastle linked with a move for the Boca Juniors midfielder, considering him an exciting long-term prospect. They have even made an initial approach for the 23-year-old winger, whose left foot has been described as "magical".

Meanwhile, Barcelona winger Raphinha continues to be touted as a possible target for Newcastle in the coming transfer windows, as they look to snap up an upgrade to Miguel Almiron. The Brazilian has been linked with a switch to St James' Park numerous times in the past, and they are believed to be willing to match Barca's £52m valuation of him.

It is always important for Eddie Howe and Mitchell to be looking into the future and eyeing signings for the summer of 2025, and it looks as though one exciting player has been identified as an ambitious option.

Newcastle interested in "outstanding" midfielder

According to The Daily Mail's Sami Mokbel, Newcastle are interested in signing Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton next summer, with Liverpool and Manchester City also mentioned as being in the mix. The Magpies of course have money in the coffers after failing with a near £70m deal for Wharton's teammate, Marc Guehi, whose position as Palace captain could now stifle a future move as well.

It has been claimed that the Eagles value the young midfielder at over £100m, and while Newcastle's interest is only thought to be "tentative", he would surely be viewed as a long-term successor to Bruno Guimaraes in the middle of the park.

Wharton could be a fantastic signing by Newcastle in 2025, having enjoyed a meteoric rise this year, joining Palace in January and then being named in England's squad for Euro 2024. It would be a shrewd way to use the Guehi money if a deal for the centre-back is indeed dead in the water.

A gifted young midfielder with elegance to his game, the 20-year-old was lauded by Newcastle legend Alan Shearer earlier this year, who said of him after an eye-catching performance away to Liverpool.

In Wharton, Newcastle wouldn't only be signing a player who could mature into something great as the years pass, but they would also be getting a footballer who is ready to shine in the Premier League for them from the off, having proven himself at Palace.

Newcastle make first approach to sign "magical" new £15m star for Howe

The Magpies could already have their first signing of 2025 lined up.

Granted, the lure of Liverpool and City acts as a real threat to the Magpies' chances of getting their man, but they should be willing to break the bank for him, having averaged 2.3 tackles per game in the league this season, as well as one key pass per match.

ODI debut looms for Shafali Verma as India embrace fresh approach

Mithali Raj says India will look to be more positive with bat and ball as preparations kick off for the next ODI World Cup

Annesha Ghosh26-Jun-20214:02

Mithali Raj – ‘The current bowling attack, especially the spinners over the years have won matches for us irrespective of the wicket we played’

Mithali Raj believes a potential ODI debut for Shafali Verma against England could help India capitalise on the field restrictions better. The three-match series begins from Sunday.”That’s how she plays. That’s her strength. That’s her style of batting,” Raj, India’s Test and ODI captain, said on match eve in Bristol. “There would be times she would give us head starts. We would love that [and for] her to be consistent. At the same time, she’s a young kid. She will learn with experience and with more matches she’ll also understand how to build an innings also.”Since she’s getting into playing the one-day series for the first time, I, as the captain, would always encourage her to play the way she enjoys playing and is comfortable playing. That’s the style of batting she should do.”Verma, 17, made 96 and 63 on Test debut last week in the tour-opening one-off Test against England, becoming the youngest batter to score twin fifties on debut in women’s Tests. Prior to that, she had played only in 22 T20Is, having debuted in September 2019.Since the 2017 ODI World Cup, India have tried out several opening partners for the left-handed Smriti Mandhana, all right-handers, including Jemimah Rodrigues, Punam Raut, Priya Punia, with varying degrees of success. However, either inconsistency – as has been the concern with Rodrigues in the recent past – or the inability to make runs at a brisk rate – a long-standing talking point around the batting styles of both Punia and Raut – has left the position still open.India depend on their top order for a lot of their success in ODIs. Since the 2017 World Cup, only 36.33% of bat runs have come from Nos. 4, 5, 6, and 7 while the top three have made 55.73%. Crucially, 21.03% of India’s team runs have come before they’ve lost the first wicket. So they can’t afford mishaps early in the innings, which could happen given Verma’s adventurous style of play.”We as experienced batters in the middle order, if we lose an early wicket, we are there to compensate and build an innings,” Raj said. “So if she gives us a great start, we’ll take it from there. Our team does have the batting depth wherein everyone has a different role to play. So we look forward to sticking to that role and give our best in playing that role.”Shafali Verma is fresh off a successful Test debut•Daniel Pockett/Getty Images

With Verma and allrounder Sneh Rana – who scripted a memorable comeback to the Indian side last week – likely to make the XI for the ODI series opener, a rejig of the top six is also on the cards.Raj, who, having kicked off her international career as an opener 22 years to the day, has largely played at No. 3 since. In the ODI series against South Africa at home in March, which India lost 1-4, she batted at Nos. 4, and 5. Raut came in at one-down in all of those matches, while Harmanpreet Kaur batted ahead of Raj, at No. 4 in the fifth match.”Healthy competition is always good in the team,” Raj said, smiling. “Having said that, we picked the team based on composition again and I would say that’s important and the girls would also understand that.”There are times when we go with an extra seamer depending on the wicket, at times we go with a spin-dominant bowling attack. So, accordingly, we try and see into our batting order and depth as well. With the equation of the allrounders coming in, we’ll definitely look into it, yes. We do have a few options, but we will select based on what composition the team is looking at getting into tomorrow’s game.”This ODI series is India’s first in the UK since their nine-run defeat to the hosts in the final of the 2017 ODI World Cup. With the next World Cup due in under nine months, Raj aims to lead the side back to winning ways after a below-par performance against South Africa.”The biggest thing we’d want the team to do is have a very strong mindset because we can’t really compare the series [to the one against South Africa in March],” Raj said. “Yes, we lost the home series but the conditions are very different at home and in England, so we can’t have the same approach.”But yes, we’d definitely look into having a more positive intent, whether it’s our batting or bowling attack, and we have been working on our fielding. Right now it’s important that whatever strategies or whatever we tried to work on in our training sessions, we carry them into the match and be consistent at that.””[…] I think our preparation has definitely started but it’s important that when we get into a series we look to win,” Raj said when asked when asked if conditions in New Zealand, where the 2022 World Cup would be played, could be similar to those in England. “Yes, we consider that also as a gameplan for the core players or the combination we would like to try or look at in the run-up to the World Cup.”Having said that, it’s important for us to win a series because the last series didn’t go well for the team and as the captain I would like the team to get back to winning ways.”

Fabrizio Romano: Chelsea chiefs blown away by £50k-per-week ace in training

Reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano has shared just how highly-regarded one member of the Chelsea squad is by the Stamford Bridge hierarchy, following some excellent displays in training at Cobham.

£80m Chelsea star dealt bad news after injury with return a while off

It’s a serious concern for Enzo Maresca.

ByEmilio Galantini Sep 18, 2024

Chelsea go into the contest on a promising run of form, with their only defeat of the new season coming courtesy of Premier League champions Man City on the opening weekend.

Since then, Enzo Maresca has guided his side to two wins and a draw, including a convincing 6-2 win over Wolves at Molineux. They were unlucky not to beat Crystal Palace considering they dominated the overall play and created many chances, but Eberechi Eze’s curled equaliser from just outside the penalty area meant they had to settle for a 1-1 draw.

Their first game back from the international break culminated in a hard-fought 1-0 win at Bournemouth last weekend, with summer signing Jadon Sancho laying on an assist for Christopher Nkunku, who won the game with an expertly taken low finish just minutes from added time.

Chelsea were without Malo Gusto through injury, who missed the clash alongside Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Enzo Fernandez and Romeo Lavia.

However, the good news ahead of their visit to West Ham is that Lavia could return for Chelsea after his hamstring problem, with Dewsbury-Hall and Fernandez back in training as well after their recoveries from illnesses. Gusto is available for Chelsea selection again too, so Maresca has been handed a quadruple injury boost before a tough contest in east London.

There will also be more competition for a place in Maresca’s starting line-up as a result. An array of reports this week have shed light on the Chelsea players who have been most eager to earn Maresca’s favour behind the scenes, with Sancho impressing Chelsea chiefs after going the extra mile to make a good impression at Cobham.

Defender Levi Colwill is also Chelsea’s most consistent trainer right now, according to GiveMeSport, but Romano says another member of the team has been turning heads on the training pitch long before them.

Chelsea chiefs blown away by Noni Madueke in training

Speaking on his YouTube channel this week, the esteemed reporter claims that the player in question is £50,000-per-week winger Noni Madueke.

Romano states that Chelsea have been impressed by Madueke in training, with Blues chiefs believing he is “special” – resulting in the club snubbing interest from Newcastle United this summer.

“It was the end of June, so to be honest, in the confused moment of financial fair play, you remember those days especially with Newcastle very busy trying some swap deals around England to make the financial fair play rules work for them,” said Romano on Newcastle’s summer interest in Madueke.

Madueke-Chelsea

“So Madueke was one of the main targets for Newcastle, then what happened? After all of that, Chelsea, internally, saw how special Noni Madueke was in training and then in the official games under Enzo Maresca.”

Chelsea have been rewarded for their faith in the 22-year-old Englishman, who’s impressed over his three Premier League appearances so far. Madueke even bagged a stunning hat-trick at Wolves three weeks ago, so it looks as if the ex-PSV Eindhoven starlet could make a real impact this term.

England, Pakistan bid for the Freedom of Manchester in series decider

Big picture

Happy Freedom Day one and all! Yes, the time has come for the UK to throw off its shackles, fling caution to the wind, dive headlong into the moshpit of civil society and rejoice in the restoration of liberty to its people. (Give or take a chorus of pings from the NHS Test-and-Trace app, of course…)For England’s cricketers, however, Freedom Day came one day early. Honestly, has there ever been a more on-brand performance than the one rustled up by their batters at Headingley on Sunday? Bowled out for 200 in 19.5 overs, including a riotous denouement of seven wickets in as many overs – the promiscuity of their short-lived strokeplay making the humble mayfly seem a model of celibacy. It was rollickingly good fun, and as gloriously effective as their hell-for-leather chase at Trent Bridge had been gloriously futile. Pakistan responded by climbing into the threshing machine with admirable purpose, but they were all thrashed out by the 13th over, thanks largely to England’s own trio of players with Pakistan heritage – Saqib Mahmood, Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali, whose Player-of-the-Match-winning haul of 36 runs at 225.00 and two wickets in three overs was CSK-esque in its effectiveness. And so to the decider, a day-night affair at Old Trafford, where England can be expected once again to spread the opportunities across their squad, as they take the field for the final time before that preliminary squad needs to be submitted to the ICC ahead of the T20 World Cup this winter. And even if they cannot get over the line in this contest, to claim their ninth series win in their last 11 T20I campaigns, the gains made by the white-ball squad, both in this leg and in the makeshift ODI campaign before it, have been immeasurable. Most of all, the sense of collective buy-in is absolute – that every player in the frame for selection recognises and embraces the free-spirited ethos that Eoin Morgan has espoused in the past six years. Full-throttle cricket might not win them every game, but it’ll lose them far fewer than the safety-first reticence of yore.As for Pakistan, their response to those indignities in the ODIs has been admirable. At Headingley, they were unable to replicate the landslide of runs that carried them to a hugely cathartic victory at Trent Bridge, but in Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan, they have an opening pairing that can carry any fight, while Shaheen Shah Afridi’s pace and incision from his left-arm line provides an air of menace every time he gets thrown the ball. They are one of only two teams not to have lost a series to England’s T20I team in the last three years – their 1-1 draw in 2020 was followed by India’s 3-2 win in March – and there’s every reason to believe they’ve got a few haymakers left in them in this campaign.

In the spotlight

Is it fair to point out that Dawid Malan needs an urgent uptick in his form? Every time he gets written about in a white-ball context, it feels as though there’s an air of persecution in the analysis. But suffice to say, Malan’s methods are different to those of his England peers – not least Moeen, who is as likely to carve his first delivery straight to deep cover as he is to ping it clean over the ropes for six. That’s not Malan’s way. He builds his head of steam with relative early caution, then lets the ends justify the means as he stares back down the track with another half-century at a 150-plus strike-rate. Or at least, that’s how it’s meant to be. Instead in this series, he’s made consecutive scores of 1 (6) and 1 (5) … two runs in 11 all told, and 2 in 17 in his past four innings, after back-to-back ducks in the ODIs. Prior to that, of course, he made a match-sealing 68 not out to guide Ben’s Babes home in that extraordinary opening victory at Cardiff, so the runs are still in there somewhere. And so too, no doubt, is the bloody-mindedness. Malan has finished each of his last three T20I series with a half-century – against Sri Lanka, India, and South Africa, where he cracked a remarkable 99 not out from 47 balls. And such are the reasons another swift rebuttal cannot be discounted.Related

It’s been a quietly significant series for the under-fire Shadab Khan. Pakistan’s vice-captain came into the series with a burdensome recent record after a fallow tour of New Zealand, and with his allround credentials under some scrutiny. He’s answered those charges emphatically in the first two games, with three vital wickets in the Trent Bridge victory, swiftly followed by a bold bout of biffing in a lost cause at Headingley. In between whiles, he has been a livewire in the outfield, with a series of outstanding catches and intercepts to lift his team’s morale when the heavy artillery has been raining down. He has a chance to finish a morale-boosting campaign on a high.

Team news

Moeen and Liam Livingstone appear to be locked into England’s middle-order for the moment, with Eoin Morgan indicating that both men would get a full run of games to make their cases – emphatically so, as things have turned out. Morgan himself dipped out of game two to share the opportunities around and to give Buttler a turn at the wheel, so if he is to return, then Jason Roy or Jonny Bairstow might be the obvious absentees, given their integral statuses in that first-choice XI. Tom Banton, his development arrested for various reasons in this white-ball campaign, might struggle to get a look-in now. England already have a selection headache looming when Stokes returns to overload their batting options. There seems little point in inflicting a migraine on themselves. Though it’s not impossible that Lewis Gregory gets another outing to provide a modicum of balance in the short term.England (probable): 1 Jason Roy/Jonny Bairstow, 2 Jos Buttler (wk), 3 Dawid Malan, 4 Moeen Ali, 5 Liam Livingstone, 6 Eoin Morgan (capt), 7 Lewis Gregory/Tom Curran, 8 David Willey, 9 Chris Jordan, 10 Adil Rashid/Matt Parkinson, 11 Saqib MahmoodAfter their struggles in the ODIs, Pakistan have found a formula that can keep them competitive in T20Is. Wholesale changes seem improbable.Pakistan: (probable): 1 Mohammad Rizwan (wk), 2 Babar Azam (capt), 3 Fakhar Zaman, 4 Sohaib Maqsood, 5 Mohammad Hafeez, 6 Azam Khan, 7 Shadab Khan, 8 Imad Wasim, 9 Haris Rauf, 10 Mohammad Hasnain, 11 Shaheen Shah Afridi

Pitch and conditions

Another sweltering day in prospect as summer’s late arrival continues to kick in, so it’s conceivable that the pitch may break up a touch as the match progresses. Scores in this season’s Vitality Blast haven’t been astronomical – only one game has seen scores higher than the 172 that Lancashire and Notts both made in their tie in June, so the range-hitting may be dialled down a notch compared to the first two games.

Stats and trivia

  • England have won four of their seven completed T20Is at Old Trafford, dating back to a nine-wicket win over New Zealand in 2008.
  • However, two of their three losses at the venue both came against Pakistan, by nine wickets in 2016 and by five runs in their most recent encounter last summer, when the series was squared 1-1.
  • Mohammad Rizwan needs 57 runs to reach 1000 in T20Is. Should he achieve it in his next innings, his 31st, he will be the second-fastest Pakistani to the landmark, behind Babar Azam (26). England’s Dawid Malan holds the record with 24 innings.

Quotes

Sold for £5m: Chelsea ace has been even better than Madueke since leaving

Todd Boehly is a man who has shown huge ambition during his two-year tenure owning Chelsea Football Club – spending over £1.1bn on new transfers to try and overhaul the playing squad.

Whilst some of his signings have been erratic, to say the least, many of them have proven to be excellent additions, providing added quality to new boss Enzo Maresca.

Cole Palmer undoubtedly has been the American’s best investment during his time at the helm, splashing out £40m on his services – registering 45 goal contributions in his 51 appearances for the Blues.

Fellow forward Christopher Nkunku hasn’t been able to make as great an impact as he would’ve envisaged due to his injury concerns, but he has posted a tally of six goals in 20 matches.

One other player has also enjoyed a great start to life at Stamford Bridge, taking his form at the club to the next level after the arrival of Maresca during the off-season.

Noni Madueke’s stats for Chelsea

Winger Noni Madueke made the move to Chelsea back in January 2023, joining from Eredivisie side PSV Eindhoven in a £29m deal.

He had to bide his time under former boss Mauricio Pochettino before he could make an impact in West London, only making 13 starts in the league last season.

However, he still managed to post a tally of five goals in the Premier League during the 2023/24 campaign – ending his first full season at the Bridge as the club’s fourth top scorer.

The arrival of Maresca has allowed for a huge upturn for the 22-year-old, starting all but one league outing so far, excelling with his increased game time on the pitch.

He’s already scored three league goals this season, bagging himself a hat-trick in the 6-2 demolition of Wolves – subsequently earning him his maiden call-up to the England national side during the recent international break.

However, despite his recent form, he’s been outperformed by one player who was allowed to leave the club 12 months – with potential regret now creeping in after his recent form away from the Bridge.

The former Chelsea ace who’s outperformed Madueke after leaving

Winger Callum Hudson-Odoi looked to be one of the biggest young talents in Europe a couple of years ago – breaking through Chelsea’s academy before featuring for the first team before even being subjected to £70m interest from Bayern Munich.

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

However, a torrid spell with injuries saw the Englishman rapidly drop down the pecking order, losing his place in West London and in desperate need of a fresh start to reignite his once-promising career.

The attacker is still only 23, but he secured a £5m move to fellow Premier League side Nottingham Forest last summer – an absolute bargain, especially when considering his recent form at the City Ground.

Hudson-Odoi notched eight league goals last season, before firing home the winner against Liverpool for the Reds last weekend – with the youngster outscoring Madueke in the same time period, having notched nine league goals to Madueke’s eight since the start of 2023/24.

He’s already been touted with a £40m move to Tottenham Hotspur in recent months, further proving how cheaply the Blues allowed the “sensational” forward – as described by U23 scout Antonio Mango – to depart his boyhood club.

The attacker’s recent form in England’s top flight is evidence that he still has all of the qualities to thrive at the top level despite his recent injury worries.

Whilst Madueke has undoubtedly been a superb addition for the club, they may have been better off putting trust in Hudson-Odoi, with his goalscoring exploits already better than that of the £29m signing.

"Important" – Pundit buzzes at "fantastic news" out of Burnley on Koleosho

Former England international and now pundit Carlton Palmer has buzzed at a “fantastic” piece of news that has emerged regarding one Burnley player.

Burnley off to solid Championship start

Scott Parker’s side have made a promising start to the new season, sitting in fourth place in the Championship heading into the weekend action. Only one defeat has come their way in the opening five matches, with belief growing that a quickfire return to the Premier League could be on the cards.

Next up for Burnley is the visit of Portsmouth on Saturday afternoon, in a game that the Clarets will be strong favourites in, as they look to narrow the gap on current league leaders West Brom, who are three points clear of them currently.

Burnley conducted some strong business in the summer transfer window, bringing in the likes of Mike Tresor, Maxime Esteve and Hannibal Mejbri, but keeping hold of important figures was also key.

Pundit loves "fantastic news" on Burnley star Koleosho

Speaking to Football League World, Palmer spoke of his delight at Burnley youngster Luca Koleosho signing a new deal at the club in recent weeks, describing it as “fantastic”:

“It’s very important to keep your best players, especially the young ones, and he’s 20-years-old, very exciting and it was a shame he picked up an injury last season. But, he’s back now, and he’s up and running, scoring against Cardiff and Leeds. It was of paramount importance to keep the youngster. We know when you’ve got good young players that the top clubs will come looking.

“Burnley have got their sights on getting back into the Premier League, so it’s fantastic news that Koleosho is remaining at the club. Scott Parker has done a great job so far, the players are enjoying their football and hopefully they can continue carrying on as they look to win promotion.”

Koleosho has shown what a big player he is going to be for Burnley moving forward, having enjoyed such a positive start to the 2024/25 season.

The 20-year-old has scored twice in four Championship appearances, finding the net against Cardiff City and Leeds United. Former Clarets manager Vincent Kompany has also heaped praise on him in the past, saying:

“He’s just a fearless player, it doesn’t really matter who he’s up against. He was up against a top full-back against Arsenal but he’s done it in every single game, because in every game he’s managed to create and make something happen.”

Sometimes, keeping a player is just as important as any new signing that comes in and the idea of Burnley losing Koleosho at this point in his career doesn’t bear thinking about, so tying him down until the summer of 2029 feels significant.

The hope is that the young winger matures as the years pass, remaining at Turf Moor for as long as possible and helping his side get back into the Premier League, but there is sure to be further interest in him if he continues on this current trajectory.
