India captain Rohit Sharma, suffering a stiff back, did not take the field at the start of the third day of the the fifth Test against England in Dharamsala. The designated vice-captain, Jasprit Bumrah, took charge of the team.Rohit has enjoyed rich returns over the back end of the series, scoring centuries in two of the last three Tests. He was instrumental in establishing India’s advantage in Dharamsala, bringing up his 12th Test century and his 10th at home. Cantwell 2.0: Rangers to launch move to sign "exciting" £15m talent

Glasgow Rangers suffered another pre-season defeat over the weekend, losing 2-0 at Murrayfield.

While pre-season results aren’t exactly important, the fact that several players who looked like they could depart Ibrox this summer managed to find a place in the Rangers starting XI was rather worrying.

Philippe Clement desperately needs to sign another few players ahead of the Gers' Premiership opener against Hearts. Could he be set to raid the Championship in the coming days?

Rangers eye move for Championship winger

According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, Rangers are “readying a new move” to sign Morgan Whittaker from Plymouth Argyle this summer.

In January 2023, Michael Beale had an offer rejected by Swansea City, then his parent club, for the English winger, but it now looks as though interest has been reignited.

The Light Blues are screaming out for some quality on the flanks and there is no doubt that Whittaker – who has an asking price of £15m – would give Clement something extra out wide.

It wouldn’t be the first time the club have signed someone from the Championship. Could they repeat their Todd Cantwell masterclass?

Why Morgan Whittaker could be Todd Cantwell 2.0

Beale may have endured a torrid ten-month spell in the Ibrox hot seat, but he did make a few decent signings, Cantwell among them.

Since arriving in Scotland 18 months ago, the former Norwich City gem has made 64 appearances for the club, scoring 14 goals and grabbing 12 assists in the process.

Rangers midfielder Todd Cantwell.

When fit and firing, the former Norwich man is a wonderful option to have, yet he was inconsistent at times during the 2023/24 campaign due to occasionally playing out wide on the right in an unfamiliar position.

Whittaker could offer something that the club struggled with last term – goals from the wide areas.

Last season for Plymouth, Whittaker scored a remarkable 20 times for the club in all competitions. Add in a further nine assists, and it is clear he poses a dangerous threat on the right flank.

When compared to his positional peers in leagues similar to the English Championship, the spritely winger ranked in the top 7% for non-penalty goals (0.43) and the top 2% for total shots (3.78) per 90, more evidence of how effective he is in the final third.

Former Plymouth manager Steven Schumacher hailed the youngster upon signing a permanent deal with the Pilgrims last summer, claiming he was “one of the most exciting prospects in the EFL” and, given how impressive a season the winger went on to have, this was certainly backed up.

Taking out Abdallah Sima’s goal tally of 16 from last term, the highest-scoring winger was Rabbi Matondo with six goals. This clearly isn’t good enough heading into the new season.

Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo.

Whittaker has proven that he has what it takes to make an impression in the English second tier. A move to Ibrox from the EFL – like Cantwell – wouldn’t faze him in the slightest and the chance to perform at a higher level could see him take his game to the next level.

Aston Villa in advanced talks with £25m "leader" excited to play under Emery

Aston Villa are now thought to be in advanced talks with a £25m “leader” over a potential move to Villa Park, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Aston Villa’s summer signings

NSWE and Monchi have been working hard behind the scenes in the Midlands to bolster Unai Emery’s squad ahead of the upcoming campaign.

With Champions League football on offer at Villa Park, the club have brought in eight new players, three of which have sealed returns to Villa in Ros Barkley, Cameron Archer and Jaden Philogene.

The headline additions in regards to fees have been Amadou Onana and Ian Maatsen, but by the looks of things, more could be on the way before the August 30 deadline.

One specific target to emerge recently has been Feyenoord right-back Lutsharel Geertruida, with initial talks thought to be underway over a potential deal.

Approach made: Aston Villa working to sign "strong" 19 y/o gem for Emery

He’s one for the future.

ByTom Cunningham Aug 14, 2024

Valued at £25m and linked with the likes of Tottenham and Liverpool this year, Geertruida could soon be on his way to the Premier League, with Villa still working to agree personal terms.

Aston Villa in advanced Geertruida talks

Providing a new update on Aston Villa’s talks with Geertruida, Romano, talking to GiveMeSport, said that talks are advanced on the defender’s side, with Geertruida excited at the prospect of working under Emery. However, as of yet, a deal is not close with Feyenoord.

"It's ongoing [Geertruida negotiations], it's not that close yet, it's well advanced on the player's side, because the player is keen on the move to the Premier League and to the Champions League.

"Also in this case, with Aston Villa, he's really attracted by the project of Unai Emery. But with Feyenoord it's always complicated to negotiate for Geertruida. He's a really important player for them and every time important clubs try to approach Feyenoord in recent years, Leipzig last year, PSG at the beginning of this summer transfer window, it has always been a tough story.

"He's a player they love at Feyenoord, and it's never easy to negotiate with Feyenoord for Hanchko, for Geertruida, all their superstars, they love to keep those players at the club."

Lutsharel Geertruida for the Netherlands.

The Netherlands international has been described as a "leader" by football analyst Ben Mattinson on X, who added that Geertruida is both "technically secure" and "aerially strong". Aged 24, Geertruida can also play as a centre-back and even as a holding midfielder if required, as per Transfermarkt, so not only could he rival Matty Cash at right-back, but he’d also offer versatility in other areas.

A move looks like it will be one to watch with Villa being in advanced talks with the player and his representatives, with time ticking until the deadline.

India to shed caution for aggression, says Virat Kohli: 'I see us being much more positive from now'

India are set to embrace a more dynamic approach to their T20I batting, which has tended in the past to blend caution with aggression. The main ingredient that prevented India from being more aggressive in the past, according to captain Virat Kohli, was a lack of batting depth. The squad picked for their five-match T20I series against England has addressed that issue, in Kohli’s view, while also adding several “X-factor” players.”The kind of players we have added into the squad is precisely to give our batting line-up more depth and not play in a similar kind of pattern that we have played with in the past,” Kohli said on Thursday, the eve of the first T20I. “We want to be a side that plays free cricket, not have any baggage of lack of depth and one guy having to bat long enough to make sure we get to a big total.”We have explosive batsmen in the team now, who can change the game at any stage even if you are two or three wickets down. That’s exactly what we’ve tried to address in picking this squad. So this time around, you will see guys a bit more expressive in terms of approaching the innings, and playing more freely. Not worried about whether we have enough batsmen to take care of things if we lose a couple of wickets early, which was the case before to be honest. We didn’t have enough depth in the batting to be able to play freely throughout the first 10 or 12 overs. But I see us being much more positive and free from this period onwards.”Related

  • Spin questions for England as India try on new big-hitting avatar

In the past India leaned towards the conservative approach of keeping wickets in hand for a final-overs charge, as against the strategy favoured by teams like England and West Indies (when at full strength), who bat deep and consequently go hard from the start. The presence of players like Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya, alongside allrounders such as Washington Sundar and Axar Patel and newcomers like Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan, is likely to free up the top order and allow them to be more expansive. That also means that of the three openers in the squad – Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan – only two can be fitted into the XI, and Kohli said Rohit and Rahul are India’s first-choice options. In the past, India have leaned on their top order to bat deep into T20 innings•BCCI

“If Rohit plays, then it’s quite simple, KL and Rohit have been consistently performing at the top of the order for us and those two would start,” he said. “In a situation where Rohit takes rest or KL has a niggle or something like that, then Shikhi obviously comes in as the third opener. But the starting composition, Rohit and Rahul will be the ones who start.”Earlier, one of the openers or Kohli at No. 3 have tended to take on the anchor’s role, and India haven’t done too badly with that approach. But the evolution of the T20 game has meant it’s time to take the next step. Since 2018, while batting first, India’s run rate while batting first in T20Is is 8.79, behind only England (9.05) and New Zealand (8.87). However, their run-rate during powerplay overs, a key indicator of the strategy adopted by the top order, is 7.99 in this same time-frame, fifth best among the top ten sides. On the other hand, in that same period, India’s batting average of 35.24 is the only one above 30 among the top ten sides. And their powerplay average of 45.95 is the second best overall, behind Australia’s 48.38. Now, with more batting depth, they can trade-off average for run rate – batsmen going harder would typically mean more wickets falling, but also give them a better chance of putting on extra runs. With the firepower of Pant and Pandya available in the middle order, and the added freedom for them of having bowlers who can bat in the lower order – especially when Ravindra Jadeja returns – India have recognised that keeping wickets in hand could be counter-productive.”I think we have played with a certain kind of pattern in the past. We didn’t probably have a big tournament to work towards, but if you look at the squad and the additions we’ve made, we’ve tried to address a few things that we needed in specific: guys who can be X-factors with the bat, do things which are the need of the hour in T20 cricket,” Kohli said. “These guys have done so in the IPL on a regular basis. We have tried to cover all those bases.”Now it’ll be interesting to see how they go about things in these five games because these are the only games we have as a team before the World Cup and we want to see how these guys fare out there in the middle. I feel like the squad right now with what we have, barring Jaddu [Jadeja] who will come back whenever fit, is the squad that I feel is the most balanced in terms of all the options readily available for us to take on the field as and when we want.”

South Australia recover from Mitchell Starc burst to set up final-day calculations

Mitchell Starc briefly threatened to burst the game open in Adelaide after New South Wales had declared behind in a game dominated by batsmen, but South Australia recovered to extend their advantage to 209.The Redbacks are in a similar position to the previous round where they will need to judge a target to set on the final day – last week they were one wicket short of victory at the WACA – although the late loss of Travis Head, edging Nathan Lyon to slip, kept New South Wales in with a chance of bowling them out. After starting their second innings with a lead of 116 they lost two early wickets as Starc, who earlier scored an unbeaten half-century, recaptured the late swing that he has struggled to find consistently this season in the first-class game. He shaped deliveries into the pads of Henry Hunt and Liam Scott to win lbw appeals which left South Australia 2 for 1 in the fourth over. The in-form Head responded aggressively, getting off the mark with a cut over point for six off Starc, and added 77 for the third wicket with Jake Weatherald before a lovely delivery from Lyon found the edge late in the day and was neatly held by David Warner.South Australia had visions of bowling New South Wales out to gain a significant lead when they had them 6 for 259. Kurtis Patterson reached his century before becoming the first first-class wicket for left-arm wristspinner Joe Medew-Ewen when he drove a catch to short cover.Peter Nevill’s half-century was ended when he edged the new ball to second slip straight after lunch before any hope the home side had of rattling through the lower order was halted by Starc and Sean Abbott as the pair added 80 for the seventh wicket following their partnership of 189 against Tasmania earlier in the season. South Australia have still to bowl a side out in this year’s competition.

'The last thing PGMOL needed' – Steve Cooper fumes at level of Premier League refereeing after Chelsea defeat as Leicester boss adds to complaints amid David Coote scandal

Leicester City manager Steve Cooper did not hold back in his criticism of Premier League officiating following his side’s 2-1 loss to Chelsea.

Leicester went down 2-1 to ChelseaCooper believes his side wrongly denied a penaltyFirst PL match since David Coote controversyFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Cooper was particularly incensed by referee Andy Madley’s decisions during the match, which left him questioning the overall standard of officiating in English football. The flash point of the game for Cooper came in the 84th minute when Stephy Mavididi went down after a challenge from Wesley Fofana. Despite strong appeals, Madley chose not to award a penalty, and the VAR review supported his call.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportWHAT COOPER SAID

Cooper described the decision as a glaring oversight, expressing frustration over what he saw as an inconsistency in the application of rules.

“When you play against teams like Chelsea, it’s about capitalising on your moments and hoping that the game is refereed in the right way, there is some of it on us,” Cooper told reporters.

The match marked the Premier League’s first fixture since referee David Coote was suspended after videos surfaced of him allegedly making offensive remarks about Liverpool and their former manager, Jurgen Klopp. Cooper acknowledged the challenging situation for Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) chief Howard Webb but emphasised the need for higher standards.

"We have had a tough season with the referee this year. This is the last thing the PGMOL needed this weekend, it’s not just a performance like that, but it being the first game as well. I felt a bit sorry for Howard (Webb). That’s how it is. It’s definitely topical, everyone wants it to be at the level it should be at. When international breaks give the chance to talk about things. That will be the case again.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Earlier this season, Madley was the VAR official responsible for a controversial goal awarded to Crystal Palace in a match against Leicester. Additionally, he booked Cooper during Leicester’s Carabao Cup defeat to Manchester United. However, the manager steered clear of controversy when he was asked if he would have an issue with Madley officiating in Leicester City's matches in the future.

Cooper replied: “I shouldn’t get into that. I’d love to answer that to be honest but I’d be sat in the directors’ box. It’s an interesting season with him, sometimes it can go like that.”

With the season nearing its midway point, Cooper knows his side must find form quickly to avoid a prolonged battle for survival. Leicester’s defeat saw them fall further in the standings as they sit 16th in the Premier League table. The Foxes will now aim to reverse their fortunes when they face Brentford on November 30.

Emery can forget Diaby with Aston Villa move for £26m sensation

Aston Villa’s transfer business has accelerated in recent days. Unai Emery has secured the return of Jadon Philogene from Hull City, just 12 months after he departed the Midlands to join Hull City.

Not only that, but it looks as though Moussa Diaby is set to join Saudi outfit Al-Ittihad in a deal worth in excess of £46m, which should give the manager plenty of flexibility in the transfer market.

Aston Villa's Moussa Diaby

Diaby will need to be replaced, that’s for certain. Might Emery turn to La Liga for a player who could make him forget all about the Frenchman?

Aston Villa eye move for La Liga sensation

Villa’s interest in Girona winger Viktor Tsygankov has been noted already this month, as Emery looks to make a potential swoop for the player in the next few weeks.

Man United target Viktor Tsygankov in action for Ukraine.

If the Villa Park side wish to bring him to the Premier League, however, the Spaniard will have to trigger his release clause, which currently sits at €30m (£26m), an affordable figure, certainly.

With Champions League football gracing the Midlands next term, there is no doubt that the manager will have to strengthen his team. Signing Tsygankov would be a smart piece of business, especially after his form last term.

How Diaby compares Viktor Tsygankov

Diaby arrived at Villa to much fanfare last summer following a season in which he registered 25 goal contributions – 14 goals and 11 assists – for Bayer Leverkusen, yet he failed to really sparkle under Emery.

Across 54 matches in all competitions, the French winger scored ten goals and grabbed nine assists. Decent statistics, but hardly mind-blowing considering his output for the German side.

In comparison, Tsygankov scored eight times and chipped in with seven assists across 34 matches, just four goal involvements shy of Diaby’s total, having played 20 matches less.

Among the rest of his squad, the Ukrainian winger ranked third for goals and assists (15) in La Liga, along with ranking third for big chances created (12) and fourth for key passes per game (1.1), showing how effective he was in the final third last term.

Football talent scout Jacek Kulig hailed the winger following his spell at Dynamo Kyiv, dubbing him “outrageous” as he scored 59 goals and grabbed 45 assists in just 153 matches for the Ukrainian side.

When compared to his positional peers, Tsygankov ranked in the top 16% for assists (0.31) and for non-penalty goals (0.35) per 90 in Europe’s top five leagues over the previous 365 days, showing that he is one of the most reliable finishers around.

There is no doubt that he could shine in the Premier League should he make the move this summer, especially under the tutelage of Emery, who happens to bring the best out of certain players.

A fee of £26m is certainly sizeable, but if the club aim to continue the momentum that has been steadily building recently, then money will have to be spent.
