Tottenham Hotspur: Spurs offer Pochettino favourite a new extension ahead of Premier League restart

Tottenham Hotspur have offered Jan Vertonghen a new contract extension, according to Het Nieuwsblad via @Daily_Hotspur.

The Belgian outlet claims Spurs have offered Vertonghen a one-month-extension until the end of July. His current contract is set to expire in June, but the new terms would allow him to finish the season.

BBC Sport reported last month that clubs have agreed to finish the campaign by July 25. However, there is room for manoeuvre, in light of the unprecedented circumstances.

The Belgium international was a favourite of former boss Mauricio Pochettino, although he has fallen out of favour with his successor Jose Mourinho, and it seems he is ready to leave north London in the summer.

Despite initial reports suggesting Mourinho has ended talks with Vertonghen’s representatives, it appears the Lilywhites are prepared to extend the Belgian’s deal.

However, the wantaway veteran is weighing up his options, and he has recieved a lucrative offer from Real Betis, amid interest from ex-Chelsea and now Inter manager Antonio Conte, who is keen to bring the defender to the San Siro.

Although the 33-year-old has been a loyal servant of the club over the years, it is fair to say he has struggled for form this season, as he was hauled off early on in the second half during the 3-2 win over Southampton in the FA Cup after making several major mistakes.

It is clear he is below the likes of Davinson Sanchez and Japhet Tanganga in the pecking order, and he is widely expected to depart Tottenham in the summer.

Moreover, Vertonghen will certainly want to protect his own interests, and he may want to avoid picking up an injury that could ward off potential suitors.

Tottenham Hotspur: Spurs reach agreement with Saints for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Kyle Walker-Peters

Tottenham Hotspur are ‘on the brink’ of reaching an agreement to sign Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Southampton, with Kyle Walker-Peters poised to move in the opposite direction, reports say.

Jose Mourinho is close to making the 33-cap Denmark international his first summer signing after Spurs made a breakthrough during negotiations with the Saints.

According to The Telegraph, as relayed by @Daily_Hotspur, the Dane is on the verge of joining the Lilywhites for £15m.

While recent reports revealed Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side had accepted a bid from Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton, amid interest from three unnamed European clubs, Hojbjerg has been heavily tipped to move to north London in the summer.

The 24-year-old has insisted he would prefer to move to Spurs and is biding his time until a deal can be done.

Kyle Walker-Peters, who spent the second-half of last season on loan at St Mary’s, is set to stay with the Saints in a separate deal worth £12m.

Hasenhuttl wanted to wrap up a deal for the 23-year-old as soon as possible, as the Lilywhites had been trying to get rid of the right-back to raise some much-needed funds, amid interest from several Premier League clubs.

It seems the Saints boss is close to getting his wish as Mourinho has made it clear he is considered surplus to requirements.

The Portuguese could find himself short of options as Serge Aurier appears destined for the exit but he is prepared to look elsewhere.

While it is worth pointing out the two potential transfers are being treated entirely separately, the board’s decision to send the academy product to the South Coast seems to have paid off.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is a shrewd negotiator in the transfer window and was determined to drive down Southampton’s asking price for their former captain (Sky Sports). The Saints were originally holding out for £35m for Hojbjerg but it seems both clubs have struck a bargain deal in a big blow for Everton.

Tottenham fans, do you think Levy should sign Hojbjerg and sell Walker-Peters? Let us know down below!

Spurs risking Jose Mourinho’s wrath with Serge Aurier demands

The Premier League may still remain a few weeks away from getting underway, but Tottenham are already facing a major issue in this summer transfer window.

One of the north London side’s main priorities has been to strengthen the right-back position, with Kyle Walker-Peters already having joined fellow Premier League side Southampton.

But Ivory Coast international Serge Aurier is also being linked with an exit, with The Telegraph recently claiming that Spurs are aiming to raise funds for the signing of Lille’s Zeki Celik by letting the former go.

However, The Evening Standard have suggested in recent days that Spurs’ asking price of £22m for Aurier is putting off potential suitors Milan, who are only willing to go up to £13m for the right-back.

Whilst Daniel Levy is understandably looking to secure the best money possible for one of his first-team players, he is risking delaying Celik’s signing or even completely missing out on him.

The sooner Mourinho gets some of his key transfer targets in, the sooner he can get to work on the training ground with them. With Spurs facing a hectic schedule at the start of the new campaign thanks to having to take part in the qualifying rounds for the Europa League, every day that the Lilywhites boss gets to train with his players will be vital.

Levy being his usually stringent self could leave Spurs in a major pickle for the opening games of the Premier League season, with either an unwanted Aurier still at the club, or no replacement full-back having being bought.

Compromising on Aurier’s asking price and getting a deal agreed for him will allow Spurs to quickly move on from the £70k-a-week star, and give Mourinho the time to actually start planning for the new campaign.

Arsenal: Mikel Arteta provides positive injury update on Kieran Tierney

Arsenal boosted their prospects of a European finish after yesterday’s 2-0 victory against Southampton moved them to within six points of Manchester United in fifth.

Kieran Tierney put in a great performance in during the match, receiving a 7.2 rating from SofaScore, which was the second best of any outfield player for the Gunners.

However, he did limp off late on in the game, leaving supporters to worry if he had suffered another injury.

The Scottish international was able to walk off the pitch but it would be understandable if Arsenal fans were worried as he has an abortive, injury-plagued first season for the Gunners.

However, Mikel Arteta provided some positive news as he has outlined that there is no worry for the player, telling the club’s official website: “Kieran was cramping. He hasn’t played two games together in the last seven or eight months and he was suffering. The weather is different to Scotland and he needs to adapt to it.”

This is good news for Arsenal as Tierney looked to be part of a new formation to keep the Gunners stronger in defence, and it worked. He started off as a left-back before shifting into the middle when Arteta switched to a back five from his initial four-man defence.

It is also good to have him fit so that Arsenal can have adequate squad depth, with Sead Kolasinac a good alternative to come off of the bench if needed.

Gunners fans will likely be relieved to hear that the Scotsman’s injury is not a major one, especially given his problems in that regard in recent months, ahead of Sunday’s FA Cup clash at Sheffield United.

Everton: Fans react as Carlo Ancelotti names Leighton Baines, Seamus Coleman and Gylfi Sigurdsson as possible successors

Plenty of Everton fans have been reacting to some comments made by Carlo Ancelotti as he revealed the three players at the Merseyside club that he feels have what it takes to become managers and therefore could possibly succeed him at Goodison Park one day.

Speaking via the Liverpool Echo, the Italian boss named Leighton Baines, Seamus Coleman and Gylfi Sigurdsson to have the same traits as what he identified in current Chelsea coach Frank Lampard before he became manager of at Stamford Bridge and implied that they could possibly succeed him at the Toffees when he eventually leaves his post.

“Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman have all the qualities to be good managers, Sigurdsson could also be a good manager,” Ancelotti said. “They all have strong football knowledge and good tactical understanding.”

Coleman is the current captain of the football club and so a leader on the pitch, so it is perhaps not a surprise that Ancelotti has named the 31-year old to be a future boss one day.

Baines has a wealth of experience to his name being 35 years of age and has shown great loyalty to the Blues, having made a rather impressive 418 appearances in 13 consecutive seasons in his EFC career so far, according to Transfermarkt.

Sigurdsson is arguably the most left-field option of Ancelotti’s, but the attacking midfield player has at times led by example on the pitch with his 22 goals and 14 assists in 105 games in all competitions over the past three campaigns for Everton, as the Icelandic international has also played in 74 senior matches for his country, as per the website.

Proact Stadium

Key information about Proact Stadium

Proact Stadium was opened in 2010 and is now the home of Chesterfield FC who play their football in the National League. The ground is located in Whittington Moor on the site of the former Dema Glassworks and interestingly, also houses Sheffield United U23s and Sheffield United Women’s team.

Its current capacity stands at 10,504 with a pitch that measures 112 by 74 yards. The surface is covered with natural grass and there is no running track surrounding it.

The record attendance of 10,089 at Proact Stadium was set during the clash between Chesterfield and Rotherham back in 2011.

A history of Proact Stadium

Chesterfield FC moved to Proact Stadium back in 2010 following around 130 years spent at their old ground, the Recreation Ground at Saltergate. Needless to say, that stadium was actually one of the oldest around and was, by that time, falling into disrepair and the club needed a change.

The first plans to move to a different stadium were actually drawn up as early as October 2004 and an agreement between the club and the local authorities was done in the following year. Still, even with all of those things out of the way quite early, complications ensued and it wouldn’t be until 2008 that they would actually get the planning permission and in 2009, the land was handed over to Chesterfield to finally start building.

The official construction began in February 2009 and it would take them about a year to finish and open it for business in 2010. 24 July was the date Chesterfield played their first game at their new home, hosting Derby County in a pre-season friendly clash. The first competitive clash, however, followed suit about three weeks later when Barnet came to town.

If reports are to be believed, the approximate cost of the erection of Proact Stadium was around £13m and it is comprised of four different stands which give it a maximum capacity of 10,500. Still, if Chesterfield need more room in case too many fans flock into the ground, the corners can also be filled in to further boost that figure to 13,000.

Interestingly enough, various sponsorship deals have resulted in Proact Stadium changing names on multiple different occasions. In 2009, when it was still in the process of being erected, the ground was actually called the b2net Stadium. But that wouldn’t last and two seasons later, following the acquisition of b2net by Swedish company Proact, the name changed once again, this time to Proact Stadium, which was officially announced on 13 August 2012.

As of August 2020, however, the name will change from Proact Stadium to Technique Stadium due to the latest sponsorship deal struck by the club.

Away from the footballing facilities and on the exterior of the East Stand is a £1.7m community facility commonly known just as the HUB. And this is where the rest of the stadium’s features are located with a cafe, ‘Chester’s Den’, a martial arts dojo, a play centre, a gym, a therapy pool, a multi-use sports hall, classrooms as well as the offices of the Trust and other tenants.

Apart from Chesterfield, Proact Stadium is also used by Sheffield United U23s and Sheffield United Women’s team.

Tickets to watch Chesterfield FC at Proact Stadium

All tickets to watch Chesterfield FC play at Proact Stadium can be found on the club’s official website. The price depends on the age group of the buyer as well as the stand chosen with the cost ranging between £18 and £22 for an adult ticket.

Of course, the club also offers a season ticket scheme which can give fans a discount over the course of the season.

Brighton & Hove Albion: Lewis Dunk’s agent says he’d find it hard to refuse offer from top six club

Lewis Dunk’s agent has admitted that the Brighton defender would find it difficult to turn down a strong offer from a top six club if presented to him.

The Seagulls captain was linked with a move to Chelsea earlier in the transfer window before signing a long-term contract at the Amex Stadium to end speculation about his future. However, David Lee has indicated that his client could be tempted into moving if the right offer came through.

In an interview with Sports Mole, the agent said: “There’s been a lot of interest – every summer I get calls on him. It’s Brighton’s interest as well to keep him on long-term deals. The boy’s happy there, his kids are in school, he’s just built his own house in Brighton, he’s really happy there.

“I think if a top-six club comes along and really push the boat out for him then it’d be hard to say no, but he’s had quite a lot of chances to move to other Premier League clubs but doesn’t see that as a forward step. It’s just a shame he’s not in the England squad as I think he fully deserves it.”

Aside from a brief loan spell at Bristol City in 2013, Dunk has spent his entire career with Brighton, racking up 306 appearances for the Seagulls since his debut at the end of the 2009/10 season. He has just one England cap to his name, featuring in a friendly against USA two years ago.

He has been an integral part of Albion’s line-up for several years, making 36 or more league appearances in each of the last six seasons and playing every minute of their first Premier League campaign in 2017/18 (as per TransferMarkt).

Even with the arrival of joint-record signing Adam Webster for £20m last year, Dunk maintained his regular centre-back berth, with Shane Duffy instead the man to see his game-time diminish.

The skipper has continued to perform to a high standard for Brighton, posting some of their best statistics from last season. He had the squad’s highest passing success rate with 87% while only two players bettered his 1.5 interceptions per game average. Also, his tally of three league goals was the joint-third highest in Graham Potter’s squad, an impressive feat for a centre-back. [via WhoScored]

Dunk’s long-term contract renewal last month, along with his agent’s comments about his contentedness in Sussex, should allow Brighton fans to rest assured that the captain is unlikely to be going anywhere soon.

With the defender turning 29 in November, though, opportunities to join a top six club may not come his way for much longer, so if someone like Chelsea were to make a lucrative offer for him next year, he may have a serious dilemma to consider.
