Offspinner Sachithra Senanayake is set to return to the UK, days after he arrived in Sri Lanka, following SLC’s decision to send him to the newly accredited Cardiff Metropolitan University for biomechanical testing of his action. Senanayake was reported for a suspect action during the fourth ODI against England at Lord’s and has to undergo testing within 21 days.”Senanayake will go in for ICC scrutiny at the Cardiff Metropolitan University within the next few days,” SLC CEO Ashley de Silva told the . “We have notified the ICC of our option and they in turn will reserve a date for Senanayake to attend the sessions.”Senanayake will bowl each of his variations, including the doosra, during the tests as he aims to prove his elbow does not flex beyond the permitted 15 degrees. His bowling action in the lab will be compared with footage of his deliveries from recent matches, to ensure he reproduces the action he uses in international cricket. Senanayake was Sri Lanka’s leading wicket-taker in the recently-concluded series, taking nine wickets at 15.11.His action had been cleared by the ICC in 2011, after biomechanical tests at the University of Western Australia had shown he adhered to the limits of the ICC’s Playing Conditions. That round of testing had come after remedial work, which had been prompted by complaints about his action during Sri Lanka A’s tour of England.Cardiff Metropolitan University was revealed as an accredited testing centre on Friday. A few more testing facilities – in England, Australia, India and South Africa – are expected to be accredited over the coming months.

I owe it to Donald – Steyn

Dale Steyn has said his inspiration to give his best is his bowling coach Allan Donald, while Hashim Amla said the declaration was based on the ground’s chasing history

Was always confident about winning – Amla

Steyn: Every day he (Donald) comes and tells you how good you are and what a legend you are. That must take a lot out of him because he is a legend himself•Associated PressFor inspiration for his paintings, Salvador Dali relied on his wife Gala. For motivation to write the upbeat tune , The Beatles’ George Harrison drew on the year he had quit the band temporarily and been arrested. For a reason to bowl faster and fiercer, Dale Steyn looks at the boundary rope because that’s where Allan Donald is usually stationed.South Africa’s bowling coach is not an unusual choice for a hero. Everyone from children playing street cricket to members of the opposition, like Mark Gillespie of New Zealand, cite Donald as someone they look up to. But to Steyn, he is more than just a role-model. He is also a personal tutor, a cheerleader and a friend.”Allan is an amazing bowler. I watched a couple of his Youtube videos before I bowled here and he was just incredible. And then every day he comes and tells you how good you are and what a legend you are. That must take a lot out of him because he is a legend himself,” Steyn said. “That’s why every time I take wickets, I try to signal to him; to try and say this is not just for the team and the fans. This is to say thank you. He keeps me going.”Since Donald took over as South Africa’s bowling coach in June 2011, Steyn’s success has soared. In the three years between then and now, Steyn has taken more than a third of his total career wickets at a lower average than his overall numbers. Not only is he more threatening than he was before, he is also more miserly. His 133 scalps have come at 21.84 with an economy rate of 2.91. Before Donald’s tenure, Steyn had 232 wickets at 23.2 and conceded 3.48 runs to the over. Those performances have included match-winning bursts against teams including Pakistan and Australia at home and now, Sri Lanka in Galle. Steyn picked up the best figures by a seamer at this venue – nine for 99 in the match – a feat made even better by the expectation conditions would conspire to work against him in this series. “Every time I go on tour I want to better my last performance. Every time I come to the subcontinent I want to do well,” Steyn said. “If I run in and take a five-for on a green track, no-one cares but if you run in and take a five-for here, that really counts.”Steyn’s performance was headlined as much by pace as it was by purpose. He knew bowling quickly would work no matter the type of surface but he also knew bowling with an attacking approach would allow no wriggle room against an opposition who thought there was a realistic chance to pull off a historic chase. “It’s not the fastest wicket in the world but if you can get pace through the air and bowl with a bit of aggression you always stand a chance,” he explained. “It’s the kind of wicket where you have to bowl the ball in the right areas more often.”That adaption and attention to discipline is something Donald has enforced rigorously since he became part of the set-up. He wants South Africa’s pack to operate under the principles of jungle law: hunt or be hunted. That approach seems to have been picked up by more than just the seamers.Hashim Amla, in his first Test as captain, made a declaration that was considered too bold for a man taking baby steps in Test leadership but was rooted in realism. Amla and the management knew that no team had scored more than 300 runs in the final innings at Galle, they knew that no team had chased more than 96 to win successfully here and that no team has batted out more than 114 overs in the fourth innings. So they made the decision to call time on their innings at a time when Sri Lanka would need 370 to win. They had 122 overs to do it, which made it a comfortable equation but you can see why South Africa did not think they would be bowling that many. Their safety net was secure as it could have been but still, there was a stage when it seemed to be hanging by a slender thread.”I just wanted to have as many overs as possible to win the game. If we had lost the game, so be it but that would give us the best chance to win the game,” Amla said. “At 110 for 1 the thought in my mind that maybe we could lose but batting last, chasing 370 is a tough ask for any team.”Other captains may have become nervous or defensive. But Amla did not because he enjoyed the shifting sands in the tussle. “I was confident and I was extremely excited because the uncertainty is quite exciting. The thought was there that we could lose this game but if we lost the game I wouldn’t have had any regrets,” he said.”It helped that the bowlers were hungry. They asked for the ball regularly. Once we picked up one and I could see how the game is unfolding, I tried to use the spinners to hold the game more because the seamers were doing the job today.”Steyn struck the first blow, Morkel joined in and then when JP Duminy snared Kumar Sangakkara with a long-hop, Amla knew he had his victory even though it came from an unexpected source. “Some plans you don’t tell the captain, you just give the bowlers the freedom to do what they want,” he joked. “Those kind of things, I mean how often do you see a good ball not get a wicket and then a not so good ball get a wicket? It’s just part of the game.”In celebration, South Africa may salute their muses. The team’s is likely that they are a massive step closer to regaining the No.1 ranking. Steyn’s is Donald and Amla’s? “A nice cup of tea to enjoy the win.” As long as it’s Ceylon tea, even Sri Lankans will approve of that.

Smith ton leads Tridents to easy win

An unbeaten century by Dwayne Smith lit up the Kensington Oval, helping Barbados Tridents to a comfortable 29-run win against St Lucia Zouks

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsAn unbeaten century by Dwayne Smith lit up the Kensington Oval, helping Barbados Tridents to a comfortable 29-run win against St Lucia Zouks but sparks also flew elsewhere. Tino Best and Shoaib Malik were involved in an altercation after the bowler dismissed the batsman, his celebration littered with choice words. Malik returned the favour before the umpire’s intervened. However, the incident had no bearing on the cricket being played. Malik had scored 49, Tridents were 128 in the 15th over and Smith was cruising along at 71. There was no let off in the remaining 5.1 overs: Smith fired up a late surge adding 58 runs in the period. He reached his second T20 century of the penultimate ball of the innings with a six over midwicket of Sohail Tanvir and celebrated it with another six off the last ball. The innings had started in a similar flourish. Zouks opted to bowl but the first ball, bowled by Roelof van de Merwe, was cut past point for a boundary by Smith. It wasn’t a one off. Smith launched a four and a six over mid-off before cutting one through to the point boundary to make it 18 off the first over. Tanvir struck of his first ball from the other end, but that proved to be their only positive in the next 13.4 overs.Smith and Malik partnered in an 110-run association that set up the foundation for a huge total. The two took their time taking 34 runs in their first six overs and apart from an odd boundary, didn’t look to press on. Smith reached his half-century in the 11th over, off 39 balls. The innings got a boost in the 15th over when both Smith and Malik launched into Best, taking 15 runs off his first four balls. Best uprooted Malik’s leg stump in the fifth delivery, but the momentum had been shifted. Smith continued his merry six-hitting ways and ended up with a tally of eight hits overs the boundary.Zouks needed a strong start to their innings but their top-order batsmen were unable to string major partnerships together. By the time Darren Sammy was dismissed, for a duck, in the 14th over, the chase had gone out of hand. Zouks needed 108 off 42 balls at that stage and although Tanvir and Keddy Lesporis made a valiant effort, their unbeaten 78-run stand fell much short of the target.

RAFINHA ESTREIA E ENLOUQUECE A TORCIDA

Big Three attempt to reassure Associates

USACA put on notice

Cricket’s ongoing power struggles in the United States have resulted in USACA being placed officially on notice for failing to meet the ICC’s membership criteria. Disputes between USACA and the American Cricket Federation mean the former body cannot claim to be the sole organisation representing the game in the USA. This has resulted in a warning that the board could be suspended if the matter is not cleared within the year.
“They are up to be put on notice, however that issue is going to be discussed at the governance committee meeting and by the ICC board on Thursday before the annual conference,” ICC global development head Tim Anderson said. “USACA have been suspended in the past but these criteria weren’t in place then. This is a new process that hasn’t been tested yet. That’s one of the things the governance committee has to talk about.”

Wally Edwards and Giles Clarke turned on the charm at the MCG on Tuesday as they attempted to reassure Associate and Affiliate nations that the “Big Three” will lead cricket with more benevolence than belligerence.Edwards and Clarke spoke on behalf of the boards of Australia and England at an informal meeting ahead of the official Associates & Affiliates gathering in the Jim Stynes Room. Alongside India’s BCCI, they have hatched plans for the game’s strongest nations to lead the rest. The third member of their triumvirate, the barred BCCI president and yet ICC chairman-elect N Srinivasan, was not at the MCG, relying instead on his colleagues to articulate the new landscape they have created together, stressing meritocracy and closer bilateral links between nations.Edwards told members that the path was now open for cricket’s second- and third-tier nations to earn their way up the ladder through success on the field and sound governance off it. Tim Anderson, the ICC’s head of global development, said the management of the governing body in Dubai had grown more at ease with plans for the next eight years after working at turning broad resolutions into more detailed blueprints.”ICC management didn’t have a large role in the proposals when they were first put up four or five months ago, but as we’ve moved through this phase we have been able to get more involved and talk to our full members about what’s important, and as far as I can gather a lot of that’s been taken on board,” Anderson said.”I’ve had conversations with CA, ECB and the BCCI over the past couple of months along with our own development committee, and all of those discussions have been really positive about what the future might look like. I feel pretty good about the future even though there are some changes to come. The fact that our full members seem to be engaging more and more with other countries is a very good thing.”Among the major concerns raised by Associate and Affiliate members are changed financial modelling, which will offer nations a reduced percentage of ICC revenues when lined up against the previous plan, even if the next set of television rights is set to fetch an appreciably larger price and thus an increased injection of cash for all.According to an insider, the ICC is showing a “lack of care for Associate cricket,” underlined by their narrower focus on the tier below Test members. The High Performance Program will, for the next few months, concentrate on the four teams participating in next year’s World Cup – Ireland, Scotland, Afghanistan and the UAE – leaving the rest wondering how they will keep cash flow going and whether their teams will get sufficient game time. They have managed to attain some certainty in terms of the new financial model. Associate and Affiliate members will receive a total amount of US$225 million but it will be divided according to a new model. Half of that money (US$112.5 million) will go to top performing Associates but it is yet to be decided who those teams will be while. The other half will be shared among the rest. There is also the possibility of another tier of Associate countries who will be classed as high-performing countries, who may not benefit from the high performance program but will receive additional financial support.”Change is difficult at any stage, and we go through a process of change every eight years given our new rights and events cycle, different structures and funding models come through,” Anderson said. “I think what’s been good for this group today is Wally Edwards and Giles Clarke came in and spoke to them this morning and talked to them about the background of some of the changes.”Some of them who were involved in our committees have a broader understanding of what’s been happening, but this has really helped get their head around what’s going on and maybe more why it’s happening. I think they understand that the rights for world cricket are going to be sold very well, the international game’s in a good place and we expect our media rights will go for significantly more than they have in the past, which will mean more money will flow down.”I would imagine that coming into this meeting there would have been uncertainty, but now there’s a bit more comfort with what’s going on.”Also a source of disquiet is the plan to reduce the number of competing teams at the World Cup from 14 to 10 from 2019, though two qualification places will still be open. “One of the things they are perhaps understandably worried about is the World Cup and why are we going from 14 teams to 10 teams,” Anderson said. “As a member that’s a fair enough question, and in isolation I can understand where they’re coming from – you don’t want to lose something because you don’t want to lose something.”As a package though if you look at the opportunities coming in T20, opening up Test cricket and a big shift is the fact that up until now Full Members have by right received an automatic spot in the World Cup. At 2019 that won’t happen anymore. If they play well at the next World Cup they can put forward a case to say it should probably be more than 10, and if I were them I’d do the same thing.”Thirdly the game’s smaller nations have wondered aloud about a wider philosophical shift from expansion to consolidation, with Edwards, Clarke and Srinivasan eager to improve the performances of numerous existing Full Members. However Anderson suggested that targeted expansion into cricket’s major untapped markets – namely China and the USA – was now more likely than before.”There might be more of a focus on that moving forward as opposed to having a wide strategy to try to grow everybody, to really target some of those key countries and say ‘We really want to have a go there because we think they’ll make a big impact moving forward’,” he said. “Even though there’s been a lot of talk about China and the USA, there hasn’t necessarily been a huge amount of investment or events haven’t been put in those places.”I’m not sure the action has backed up some of the words, but moving forward I think that’s one of the things that’ll probably happen.”The three Associate and Affiliate positions on the ICC board will be taken up by Imran Khawaja of Singapore, Neil Speight from Bermuda and Francois Erasmus of Namibia. There was no room for Keith Oliver from Scotland which is believed to have caused consternation among the European Associate and Affiliate members who were lobbying for Oliver to get a position on the board. Oliver was instrumental in winning the right for Associate nations to have a pathway to play in international and many Associate members believed he would continue to champion their cause. The day was rounded off by the first installment of the two-day Chief Executives Committee meeting, at which recommendations from the cricket committee’s discussions in Bangalore were to be discussed. The Associate and Affiliate nations also discussed their situation with regard to the Big Three administrative and revamp of the ICC and arrived at the conclusion that “rebellious” postures would not help their cause at a time when “logical” thought was required.

Rare win keeps Northants in last-eight hunt

Maurice Chambers produced a career-best haul as Northamptonshire kept alive their hopes of a place in the quarter-finals of the Royal London Cup

Maurice Chambers produced a career-best haul as Northamptonshire kept alive their hopes of a place in the quarter-finals of the Royal London Cup with a 19-run Duckworth-Lewis win over struggling Lancashire at Old Trafford.Chambers struck three times in the first six overs of the Lightning’s pursuit of 201 in a 40-over game, leaving the score at 25 for 3, after rain had delayed the start of this Group A clash by two hours. The rain returned with Lancashire, who now cannot qualify for the last eight, at 47 for 3 after 10.1 overs and a long way off the pace in terms of D/L. Play did not restart. This was only Northamptonshire’s second win in seven in the competition, but it meant victory over Essex at home in their final group game next Thursday – coupled with other results going their way – would be enough for a top-four finish and progression. Bottom-placed Lancashire have now lost five out of seven group matches and all three of their home matches.Northamptonshire were also thankful to South African overseas opener Richard Levi as his 68 off 43 balls, with 13 fours and a six, underpinned what looked only to be a fighting total at best. He reached 50 off 31, with 46 of those runs coming in boundaries as the Steelbacks notched 80 runs off the first 10 overs.Lancashire left-arm spinner Stephen Parry, who has struggled for form in limited-overs cricket since returning from the World Twenty20 with England in late March, was the pick of their bowlers with a season’s best 3 for 23 from eight.Parry helped fashion an impressive recovery in tandem with Steven Croft’s offspinners as Northamptonshire only scored 120 runs for the loss of eight wickets in the last 30 overs. Croft added 1 for 29 from his allocation of eight. The visitors lost 3 for 11 inside five overs – two to Parry and one to Croft – as they slipped from 125 for 2 in the 21st. Parry, on England Lions duty earlier this week, had Kyle Coetzer caught at long-off and Adam Rossington caught at midwicket off a leading edge before Croft had Ben Duckett caught at short third man on the reverse sweep.Parry had Rob Keogh caught and bowled as Northamptonshire struggled to up the rate again and lost three further wickets in the last 10 overs. Graeme White’s 21 off 31 at least helped get them to 200, which proved to be enough thanks to Chambers. He had List A debutant Luis Reece caught at first slip in the fourth over before getting Karl Brown caught at short cover and Paul Horton, who had earlier elected to bowl, bowled off an inside edge with successive balls in the sixth.

Hosts' power-hitters await struggling visitors

Perhaps West Indies will use the T20 to spend their remaining limited-overs vigour as Bangladesh have struggled so far and are quite uncomfortable playing the shortest format

The Preview by Mohammad Isam27-Aug-2014Match factsWednesday, August 27, 2014
Start time 2000 local (0000 GMT)The focus will also be on Denesh Ramdin, who slammed 169 in the third ODI•WICB MediaBig pictureBefore Test matches and just a couple of days after an ODI series, a T20 is seemingly a good medium for West Indies and Bangladesh to release pent-up energies which would not necessarily go into the longer version. Perhaps the hosts will use the one-off game to spend their remaining limited-overs vigour as the visitors have struggled so far and are quite uncomfortable playing T20s.West Indies’ comprehensive ODI series win, having most of their batsmen in form and picking players who had been regularly playing the format in the last month is enough reason to look forward to a more powerful outing on a ground where six-hitting looks ridiculously easy.T20 captain Darren Sammy has pointed out that this game is important for players who play only in this format. Many of the CPL’s star performers, the likes of Andre Russell, Krishmar Santokie and Dwayne Smith would be expected to be on top of their games, while West Indies also included Chris Gayle and Dwayne Bravo, who had missed the New Zealand T20s in July. The focus will also be on Denesh Ramdin, who slammed 169 in the third ODI. He struck 11 sixes during the innings, at times clearing the straight boundary with some ease. It would mean that the moment he comes out to bat at Warner Park, the Bangladesh bowlers will be on high alert. There could be a change in the attack with Rubel Hossain an option for Mushfiqur Rahim, apart from Mashrafe Mortaza and the impressive Al-Amin Hossain. Taskin Ahmed has not played since the first ODI while the spinners were under constant attack in the last game, having done reasonably well in the second ODI.Whether the captain and coach would go with Abdur Razzak is surely going to be a talking point as the selectors have said recently that they want to move on from him in T20s. Taijul Islam is in their plans, but it is debatable how wise it would be to expose the new left-arm spinner at this venue. The team’s main headache is still the batsmen although Tamim Iqbal’s half-century would give them some relief. Anamul Haque has missed out twice after the century, and this is a chance to see whether Shamsur Rahman and Mithun Ali are in contention.Mushfiqur has come under considerable criticism from the BCB for his decisions on the field as well as in selection. He could even be replaced by a new captain in the shorter format, so this could be a good opportunity to respond with a strong showing. He would, however, need his out-of-form team-mates, Nasir Hossain and Mahmudullah particularly, to stand up on a very crucial occasion.Form guideWest Indies WLLWW (last five completed matches, most recent first)
Bangladesh LLLLLIn the spotlightHe will possibly come to bat lower than Dwayne Bravo, Kieron Pollard and Darren Sammy, but Andre Russell was the most watchable allrounder in the CPL, and he would be expected to bring that form to this game.Tamim Iqbal finally scored a fifty in the third ODI, his first in international cricket since October last year. Scotland crushed by Elliott, Watling tons

ScorecardBJ Watling and Grant Elliott both struck hundreds in Ayr•Donald MacLeod/Cricket Scotland

Hundreds from Grant Elliott and BJ Watling powered New Zealand A to a comprehensive victory in Ayr, as Scotland, without a number of their top-order batsmen, succumbed in the first of three matches.Scotland had started well with the ball but lost the plot at the back end of the innings, conceding nearly 150 runs in the last ten overs as Watling and Elliott piled on the misery. In reply the home side never threatened, with only Richie Berrington and David Murphy displaying any fluency with the bat.Without eight regulars due to injury and county commitments, including captain Kyle Coetzer, Scotland were forced to field a weakened side, handing a debut to 21-year-old Gordon Munsey; by contrast, the New Zealand A side featured six players with Test match experience.Having won his first toss as Scotland captain, Matt Machan would have been delighted with the way his bowlers started, removing both openers inside the first ten, including in-form Hamish RutherfordAfter the seamers’ hard work, it was the introduction of spin from the Cottage End that broke the third-wicket partnership, when Dean Brownlie chopped the third ball of Majid Haq’s first over on to his leg stump; seam struck an over later when Evans trapped Daryl Mitchell lbw to leave New Zealand A 92 for 4.However, as the sun and stiff breeze dried the pitch, batting got easier and easier. Both Machan and Michael Leask were deposited over the boundary by Colin de Grandhomme, and had he not missed a straight one off Haq the No. 6 might have caused some real damage. But for Scotland, the worst was yet to come.Once Elliott reached an obdurate fifty, he accelerated alongside Watling, who batted with total ease. Their partnership was eventually worth 185 from 19 overs. Elliott scored his second half-century off 26 balls, while Watling’s second came off just 13, as they battered Safyaan Sharif’s final three overs for 57 runs. Still 20 short of his hundred, Watling mistimed the ball over mid-off but Machan, running back, never quite settled under it; the drop seemed inevitable, as did defeat even at that point. If Scotland’s bowling was ultimately sub-par, their batting was dire. From the moment Hamish Gardiner became the first of Matt Henry’s four victims, Scotland never looked like threatening the target of 348. There were bright patches for Grant Bradburn, Scotland’s coach, to focus on: Munsey looked at ease with the pace and bite of the attack until he played a loose drive and Berrington once again showed form with the bat, although by the time he got into his groove the game was well done. In truth, it had the feel of a square practice for both sides after Henry and Scott Kuggeleijn blew away the top order.”The first 35 overs, we bowled well, we fielded well, and then we let it get away from us,” Bradburn said. “We’ve got a lot of high-level cricket between now and the World Cup, and we have to try and improve those skills, and try and be comfortable chasing. At the moment, we’re more comfortable setting than chasing, and we have to be able to do both. We have the skills to go out and chase big scores, but what we need is the belief.”
