South Africa's record under threat

ESPNcricinfo previews the second Test between South Africa and Australia in Port Elizabeth

‘Is there an anti-Mitch pitch?’

Big Picture “I truly believe that the wicket played a big role in the success that he had. The stats, even in the Ashes, say that he picked up a lot of lower-order wickets.” So said Graeme Smith of Mitchell Johnson after the Centurion Test. Perhaps to Smith denial is just a river in the north of his continent. Johnson picks up a lot of lower-order wickets, but he picks up a lot of wickets full stop. Top, middle, bottom. Notably he removed Smith and his opening partner Alviro Petersen in both innings in Centurion. And while Port Elizabeth may offer up a slightly less helpful pitch, Johnson showed during the Ashes Test in Adelaide that he is more than capable of extracting life out of a seemingly unresponsive surface. And, let’s face it, it’s all about Johnson at the moment. If he keeps going in his current direction, he will bowl Australia to yet another series win in South Africa. If his pace slips or he loses consistency, South Africa may find a way back into the series. If that seems too simplistic, it can be conceded that there are other factors at play. It is just that Johnson has the power to render most of them irrelevant. Not all of them, though. What he cannot significantly impact is South Africa’s own bowling, and they need a lift from Dale Steyn, Vernon Philander and Morne Morkel. Where South Africa could fight back is if they keep Australia’s runs low.South Africa in recent years have displayed a remarkable ability to avoid clumps of losses, but last time they were defeated in two consecutive Tests it was by Australia, in South Africa five years ago, during a series in which Johnson had a major impact. It was also the last time they lost any Test series, anywhere. Unless they turn things around in Port Elizabeth, that drought will be broken. The decision for South Africa is whether to go with Wayne Parnell or Dean Elgar•Getty Images

Australia WWWWWIn the spotlightAB de Villiers showed in Centurion why he is the No.1-ranked Test batsman in the world. He was the only South African who consistently looked comfortable against Johnson, top scoring in both innings and almost reaching a century in the first. But batting at No.5 means de Villiers may run out of partners if Johnson continues to terrorise the lower order, so it will be interesting to see how South Africa use him through the rest of the series, and whether his wicketkeeping duties will have any adverse effect on his batting.Alex Doolan might have missed out on a century on debut but his work with the bat and in the field showed that he belongs at Test level. Composed at the crease and classy in his strokeplay, Doolan gradually became more confident during his second-innings 89 but also showed a willingness to leave the ball and make the bowlers come to him. At short-leg he was outstanding in the second innings, clutching two reflex catches that would have had some players flinching. All in all, it was an encouraging start.Team news Ryan McLaren has been ruled out after being concussed by a Johnson bouncer and that leaves South Africa with the choice of another bowling allrounder or a specialist batsman to replace him. Wayne Parnell would be the closest to a like-for-like swap but Dean Elgar would bolster a batting line-up that was bruised and browbeaten by Johnson in Centurion. There is also the possibility that both Elgar and Parnell will come in and the spinner Robin Peterson could be left out. South Africa have also added Quinton de Kock to the squad as cover for Alviro Petersen, who has a viral infection.South Africa (possible) 1 Graeme Smith (capt), 2 Alviro Petersen / Quinton de Kock, 3 Hashim Amla 4 Faf du Plessis, 5 AB de Villiers (wk), 6 JP Duminy, 7 Dean Elgar, 8 Wayne Parnell, 9 Vernon Philander, 10 Dale Steyn, 11 Morne Morkel.Australia are unlikely to make any changes given that Shane Watson is still unavailable due to his calf problem and the two batsmen who came in to the side in Centurion, Shaun Marsh and Alex Doolan, both performed beyond expectations.Australia (probable) 1 Chris Rogers, 2 David Warner, 3 Alex Doolan, 4 Shaun Marsh, 5 Michael Clarke (capt), 6 Steven Smith, 7 Brad Haddin (wk), 8 Mitchell Johnson, 9 Ryan Harris, 10 Peter Siddle, 11 Nathan Lyon.Pitch and conditionsThe Port Elizabeth pitch is renowned for being on the slow side but a thick covering of grass remained a couple of days out from the Test, giving some hope that there could be assistance for the fast bowlers. The forecast suggests there could be rain at times during the match with temperatures generally in the mid 20s.Stats and trivia Since he was recalled for the first Ashes Test in November, Johnson has taken 49 wickets at an average of 13.14 from six Tests with a strike-rate of a wicket every 27.1 balls Johnson is only the second Australian after Shane Warne to reach the double of 250 Test wickets and 1500 runs Only once since South Africa’s readmission have they played Australia in a Test in Port Elizabeth, the famous 1997 match that Ian Healy won with a six Remarkably, Australia have won six consecutive Tests and lost six consecutive Tests in the past 12 months – the losses having come in India and EnglandQuotes “We’ve lacked a bit in real competitive cricket coming into this series. It’s a quick turnaround and we have to adjust well to play winning cricket in Port Elizabeth.”

“I think if the wicket stays like it is it will be a three-dayer, expecially with two fantastic bowling attacks. So I don’t think it will stay like that.”

Upbeat India prepare for England test

India Under-19s will hope their batsmen can give them a decisive advantage as they meet England Under-19s in the World Cup quarter-final on Saturday

Kanishkaa Balachandran in Dubai21-Feb-2014The mood in the Indian camp, on the eve of their quarter-final, was jovial at the picturesque ICC Academy in Dubai, just behind the game’s headquarters. The fielding drill looked anything but boring and the players were raring to go. India have proved so far that their showing in the practice games – they lost both the matches – wasn’t much to go by, having not dropped a single game in the group stage. Despite those wins, their coach B Arun said the team was yet to peak. He was referring to the top-order batting, which was identified as India’s strength before the tournament started but hasn’t been consistent. In their first two games, against Pakistan and Scotland, India were in trouble at 94 for 4 and 19 for 4 respectively and needed rescuing from their lower order. The problem didn’t resurface against easier opponents Papua New Guinea, but tougher tests await them in the knockouts. Arun was not too worried about the batting order facing up to England’s pace-centric attack.”Yes it hasn’t clicked as we would have expected. In a big tournament there are bound to be butterflies and the over-eagerness to perform also,” Arun said. “Now they have kind of settled down and will hopefully peak at the right time.”Sarfaraz Khan has been the revelation in the middle order, as has the understated allrounder Deepak Hooda. Against Scotland, the pair came together after India lost their top five batsmen for 22, making the 89-run target look distant. Together, Sarfaraz and Hooda ensured India did not suffer further losses. Arun denied the perception that the team got carried away against an easier opponent.”Definitely not complacency,” Arun said. “There were maybe one or two good balls, plus a bad decision (referring to Sanju Samson’s lbw). In such a situation you don’t expect to bat before lunch and suddenly three-four wickets fall. It’s a pretty good lesson for us.”The spinners from both sides were more than a handful, with Kuldeep Yadav taking a hat-trick, but Arun said the pitch for the game against Scotland was not the reason for a collapse.”The devils were not in the pitch. It was in the mind,” Arun said. “If you look at Akhil’s (Herwadkar) shot, it was a wide ball and he played the cut but got the edge.”England are an unfamiliar opponent for India, for the teams have not played each other between the World Cups. Their last clash was in a one-dayer during the Quadrangular series in Townsville in 2012, which India won by 63 runs.In this tournament, England have played out a high percentage of dot balls – 178 and 189 against Sri Lanka and New Zealand respectively – and Arun said there were no specific plans to target their weaknesses.”Every team that plays well normally plays about 55% scoring shots and 45% dots,” Arun said. “Sometimes statistics don’t tell you anything. We’ll just focus on what we need to do and our bowlers to bowl on areas they need to bowl. If we do that, it is about trying to dictate what the batsman should be doing rather than looking at the batsman’s strengths.”India made two changes for their match against Papua New Guinea, bringing in Shreyas Iyer and Monu Kumar and the coach said the XI for the quarter-final will be decided after looking at the pitch.England trained at the Fairgrounds Oval in the Dubai Men’s College campus in the afternoon. They, too, could have entered the quarters with a 100%-win record had they not lost a nail-biter against Sri Lanka. Tim Boon, the England coach, said India will be their biggest test yet in playing under pressure.”Every team now has access to each other’s video footage,” Boon said. “It’s a great learning curve for our boys to see how they play under pressure.”India have been formidable over the last two seasons in whatever competition they have gone for, however we are focusing our attention in what we do well.”Boon said the high percentage of dot balls in their last two matches wasn’t an issue. Against New Zealand, England recovered from a slow 91 for 4 after 30 overs to 229 for 8.”What I liked about our batting was that we had some wickets till the end,” Boon said. “Then, we were able to up the strike-rate at the end. Yes, there were a couple of little learnings in that, but that’s the beauty about World Cup cricket – to test yourself against the best young talents in the world.”

‘South Africa are more ruthless than ever’

Big Picture

After Australia’s remarkable Ashes clean-sweep, Michael Clarke praised his men but was firm in his resolve that the Australians would not rest until they were No.1 in the world. What better way to assess themselves than against the world’s best? South Africa have occupied the top spot for a year and a half. Daylight is second. Clarke and coach Darren Lehmann will certainly have noted the way South Africa declined to chase a victory that seemed there for the taking against India at the Wanderers in December. But they should also note that South Africa’s approach has led them to lose only one of their past 19 Tests. This is a team that has not lost a Test series for five years, home or away. That is a remarkable feat. The last team to beat South Africa was Australia in early 2009. In South Africa. With Mitchell Johnson at his peak. In fact, since South Africa’s readmission Australia are yet to lose a Test series in the country. is a remarkable feat. Even the drawn two-Test battle in late 2011 was fascinating, featuring as it did Australia’s all-out 47 in Cape Town followed by the emergence of a teenage Pat Cummins, Man of the Match in the follow-up victory in Johannesburg. Cummins will not be there this time, but the four highest-ranked fast bowlers in the world will be – and that does not even include Johnson. Vernon Philander, Dale Steyn, Ryan Harris and Peter Siddle are all in the ICC’s top five Test bowlers, and together with Johnson and Morne Morkel will make for a captivating series.Which team’s batsmen will handle the pace assault best? Australia had a settled batting group through the Ashes but could have two new faces in Centurion, with the uncapped Alex Doolan favoured to debut and Shaun Marsh or Phillip Hughes also likely to play due to Shane Watson’s injury. South Africa’s main question is how to handle life after Jacques Kallis. The likely new No.4, Faf du Plessis, has already shown the Australians his credentials, almost single-handedly saving the Adelaide Test in 2012. And any team that can have the No.1 batsman in the world – AB de Villiers – coming in at three-down is a force to be reckoned with.

In the spotlight

Dale Steyn might be ranked second in the world to his team-mate Vernon Philander, but that is not necessarily the view Australia’s batsmen will take. His high-quality, high-speed outswing will ask serious questions of an Australian line-up that remains vulnerable against the moving ball. The presence of two left-handers at the top of Australia’s order might help them slightly, but if they have right-handers at Nos.3, 4 and 5, expect the edges to fly.Back in 2009, Mitchell Johnson entered the tour of South Africa at his peak, having just broken Graeme Smith’s hand in the Sydney Test and finding the rhythm and pace that has deserted him at times during his career. Five years later, he has it again. The reigning Allan Border Medallist and tormentor of England during the Ashes, Johnson has the potential to worry South Africa’s batsmen like few other bowlers in the world. They might handle him better than England, but don’t expect his impact to drop off too much.Mitchell Johnson again returns to South Africa in the form of his life•PA Photos

Team news

For the first time in more than 18 years, South Africa must work out what to do without Kallis, a man who was two cricketers (at least) in one. Du Plessis appears set to move up to Kallis’ No.4 spot, which opens up a place at No.7 that could be filled by either Wayne Parnell or Ryan McLaren. Parnell offers more pace and that might earn him a chance to play his first Test in nearly four years. However, there is also the possibility of Rory Kleinveldt being included. JP Duminy was battling tendonitis in his left wrist in the lead-up to the match but was recovering reasonably well.South Africa (possible) 1 Graeme Smith (capt), 2 Alviro Petersen, 3 Hashim Amla 4 Faf du Plessis, 5 AB de Villiers (wk), 6 JP Duminy, 7 Wayne Parnell / Ryan McLaren, 8 Robin Peterson, 9 Vernon Philander, 10 Dale Steyn, 11 Morne Morkel.Watson’s absence due to a calf injury means there will be two changes to Australia’s batting order from the side that played in all five Ashes Tests. The guessing game is which two of Doolan, Marsh, Hughes and Moises Henriques will miss out? It seems likely that Australia will rely on their four-man attack in Centurion, which would leave Henriques on the bench. Doolan is set to debut at No. 3 and Marsh, who was picked ahead of Hughes in the original squad, looks likely to join him. This appeared to be confirmed by the national selector John Inverarity’s consoling chat to Hughes late in Australia’s final training session.Australia (possible) 1 Chris Rogers, 2 David Warner, 3 Alex Doolan, 4 Michael Clarke (capt), 5 Steven Smith, 6 Shaun Marsh, 7 Brad Haddin (wk), 8 Mitchell Johnson, 9 Ryan Harris, 10 Peter Siddle, 11 Nathan Lyon.

Pitch and conditions

Two days before the Test, the Centurion pitch had a white sort of shade to it but still bore some grass. There should be something there for the fast bowlers and the moisture in the air should also offer some assistance. Typical Highveld thunderstorms are expected to play a part throughout the match – last week, the Hennops River outside the ground burst its banks and the hotel nearby had to be evacuated.

Stats and trivia

  • Since Kallis made his Test debut in December 1995, South Africa have played only 18 Tests without him – an average of one per year
  • In six Tests in Centurion, Dale Steyn has taken 36 wickets at 17.61; Vernon Philander has 12 victims at 13.66 there from two Tests
  • If Australia win this series, they will move up to second place on the ICC’s Test rankings
  • Chris Rogers has played 257 first-class matches but until this tour had never so much as visited South Africa, let alone played cricket there
  • Australia and South Africa have met only once in a Test in Centurion, in 1997, when Allan Donald took eight wickets in a South African win

Quotes

“If you’re the No.1 team in the world, you have to be favourites. It’s something we’ve become accustomed to. We worked very hard and went to some tough places to get that ranking and to defend it so we’re comfortable with that.”

“If we want to get back to being No. 1 in the world, we have to have success away from home, we have to beat the best teams, and as tough a challenge as it is we’re excited about it.”

Srinivasan to attend ICC meeting in Dubai

N Srinivasan will attend the ICC executive board meeting, to be held in Dubai on April 9 and 10, in his capacity as a BCCI “representative”

Amol Karhadkar08-Apr-2014Despite having been sidelined from BCCI affairs following a Supreme Court directive, N Srinivasan will attend the ICC executive board meeting, to be held in Dubai on April 9 and 10, in his capacity as a BCCI “representative.” While BCCI interim president Shivlal Yadav said he has “no comment on this” and secretary Sanjay Patel didn’t respond to queries, a senior BCCI official confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that Srinivasan “will attend the ICC Board meeting”.While splitting the BCCI presidency between Sunil Gavaskar (IPL affairs) and Yadav for other issues, the two-judge bench of the Supreme Court had declined to pass an order in relation to Srinivasan’s role in ICC affairs, saying it was an “internal” matter of the BCCI.In normal practice, the BCCI president is inducted onto the ICC board as a Director while the secretary attends the ICC Chief Executives Committee meetings. At every Annual General Meeting (AGM), it is the BCCI president who nominates the Board’s representative at ICC meetings. At the last BCCI held in Chennai on September 29, 2013, it is understood the issue of an ICC representative had been discussed and it was verbally decided that “Srinivasan will continue to be in the (ICC) executive board and Patel in the CEC.” The minutes of the AGM have, however, not yet been circulated among the BCCI members.Srinivasan’s position in the ICC, as one of its directors, can be questioned under various ICC regulations in the light of the Supreme Court observations and orders around the BCCI’s handling of the IPL 2013 corruption case. In theory, any member can raise questions pertaining to two clauses in the ICC’s constitution – firstly, Clause 2.1 of ICC’s code of ethics which states that “Directors shall not engage in any conduct that in any way denigrates the ICC or harms its public image.” Under clause 4.11 (F) of the ICC’s constitution, an ICC director can be removed as a member of the Executive Board by notice given to him and executed by not less than two thirds of the members of the Executive Board on any one of the following grounds:”(1) he is guilty of any dishonesty, gross misconduct or wilful neglect of duty (whether by act or omission); or (2) in the reasonable opinion of the Executive Board, he commits (whether by act or omission) any act which brings or would tend to bring the Council into disrepute; or (3) he conducts himself in a manner materially adverse to the interests of the Council.”The ICC has remained tightlipped over the issue ever since India’s Supreme Court directive had Srinivasan removed from his official position, repeatedly saying, it has “no comments at this stage.” Other than merely attending the meetings this week, Srinivasan’s involvement in the ICC extends towards taking over as its first chairman in June this year. Under the new ICC constitutional amendments to be made this June, “the initial chairman of the ICC… shall be the nominee on the ICC Board of the BCCI (or nominees of the BCCI if the original nominee is replaced by the BCCI as its nominee on the ICC Board during this period.”)The BCCI remains confident that not only have they acquired the apex court’s approval for Srinivasan to continue with his ICC responsibilities but also that there will be no protest from within the ICC Board itself towards the ICC chairmanship. An ECB spokesman said the issue of Srinivasan attending the meeting had, “nothing to do with us.” The terms of reference required for anyone to sit on the Board, he said, “is that they are a nomination from their home board. The ECB have no role to play in that decision. It is a matter for the BCCI who attends an ICC meeting.”Hours after the Supreme Court order, Patel had said that Srinivasan will remain BCCI’s representative at the ICC. Since then, the Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations (FICA) has requested the ICC to sideline Srinivasan from the executive board and to not allow him to take over as the ICC chairman in July. “Serious allegations of betting and spot-fixing in IPL 2013 have been made against Mr Gurunath Meiyappan as the alleged team principal of Chennai Super Kings and these remain the subject of proceedings before the Indian Supreme Court,” he said. “Mr Srinivasan is the managing director of Indian Cements Limited [the owner of the Chennai Super Kings] and is also the father-in-law of Mr Meiyappan,” FICA chief executive Paul Marsh had said.”The Supreme Court order from last Friday noted that Mr Srinivasan had made a written offer through his legal counsel to step aside from his functions as BCCI President until investigations into the allegations against him were completed. The Supreme Court has issued an interim order prohibiting any employees of India Cements Limited (other than players or commentators) from performing any duties for the BCCI. FICA understands that the order applies to Mr Srinivasan, as managing director of the company.”

'Tone down' World T20 expectations, Shakib tells home fans

Shakib Al Hasan has urged Bangladesh’s fans to be reasonable about their team’s chances in the World T20

‘We have to rely on our natural skills’ – Shakib

Shakib Al Hasan has urged Bangladesh’s fans to be reasonable about their team’s chances in the World T20. Similarly, he wants to be remain sensible and calm on the field, and expects the same from his team-mates.”As the tournament is at home, we will have the support but there shouldn’t be too much expectation,” Shakib said. “I have heard people say, ‘Let the cup stay at home.’ But I think we have to tone that down a bit.”Please support us, the team will do better. But everyone has to take the result sportingly. Too much expectation does put undue pressure on us.”Shakid Al Hasan: “I have heard people say, ‘Let the cup stay at home.’ But I think we have to tone that down a bit”•Getty Images

As the Bangladesh captain during the 2011 World Cup, Shakib has first-hand experience of how expectations could have a major impact on the team. In that tournament, Bangladesh were routed for 58 against West Indies, but bounced back to win against England a week later. Soon enough, however, the pressure seemed to catch up again and they folded against South Africa.Bangladesh’s current form should not boost expectations, but there is still tremendous interest in the World T20, particularly as Bangladesh will open the tournament against Afghanistan on March 16.Shakib wants the team to show better understanding of the situation out in the middle, and his team-mates to remain cool when under pressure. “What we have to do in T20s is to keep a calm head and give our best. We become too excited in T20s. I think everyone is responsible enough to understand these things and do the right thing for the team.”Shakib said that there is no taking any team lightly in T20 cricket, irrespective of where they are ranked. “Nepal is a big team to us. We are a big team to Pakistan, India and Australia. An over or a ball can change a T20 game. On paper there can be a favorite but on the day, I don’t think there is any favorite.”We should fear everyone because we don’t know much about Nepal and Hong Kong. Say we score 160 but someone from the other side scores a hundred. Scotland have done that to us in the past. We have to be careful in all the games. It is hard to recover from a mistake in a T20.”
